Weekly Photography Challenge – Backlighting

12 Sep

Check out these examples of images that have backlighting. Take a good look and get some ideas. Now it’s your turn.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Backlighting

This week’s challenge is to look for the light, particularly how it is hitting your subject. Backlight occurs when the light is coming from behind your subject, aimed back towards the camera. It works really on transparent objects like leaves and flowers.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Fish

Photographing seemingly unattractive objects like fish can be difficult – or maybe just a challenge.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Fish

A hard photo subject can help you grow as a photographer, push you out of your comfort zone. So now’s a great time to practice. Find a fish (at the market, store, dead or alive – whatever you can come up with) and try photographing it to make a compelling image.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Machines

Earlier today I rounded up a collection of images of powerful machines here. Unless you live in a remote village far from civilization – chances are that machines are part of daily life in your area.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet

08 Aug

Feet are an important part of our human body. They take us where we want to go. They hold us upright. They can be all different sizes and styles, decorated or plain, even covered in fur (think pets). But they are often overlooked in photographs or even cropped off.

Shandi-lee Cox

Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet

This week we challenge you to go out and photograph only feet and crop off the body! They could be your own feet (foot selfie?), a friend’s, your cat’s, or a total stranger’s feet. It’s about looking at things differently and seeing something you may otherwise miss or pass over.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Antique Cars

01 Aug

Old cars – look around you, they’re everywhere.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Old Cars

Admit it – photographers love old things. The more battered, torn, peeling, weathered, falling down, beat up, rusted, broken and just in generally poor condition an item is – the more we love to photograph it. Right?! Tell me I’m not alone on that?

So your challenge this week is to go find an old car. It could be ancient and broken down like described above, or overhauled, in pristine condition, and well cared for by a car enthusiast. It’s your choice – or do both.

Where to find them?

If you can’t seem to find any old cars in your area here are a few places to look. Please remember not to trespass on private land and get permission before entering anyone’s property.

  • Junk yards (ask first)
  • Farmers’ fields (ask if you need to go on the property)
  • Vintage car clubs or car rallies. These are great as you’ll find dozens or hundreds of cars there on display for you to photograph.
  • Historic parks or museums – outdoor ones are especially good. If indoors ask about their photography policy before shooting and you may also need permission if you want to use a tripod.
  • Cuba – you don’t have to travel there (unless you want to) I just thought I’d mention it as the country is FULL of them, and I thought you might enjoy seeing some of my images from that amazing country.

You can even hire a driver and a car there for about $ 30/hour. Or just hail any taxi!

You may find it handy to have a tripod and polarizing filter (to cut reflections) and shoot later in the day if possible to get nice even light on the car. You might want to check out this dPS article as well: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Newbie Car Photographers Make.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Ordinary Objects

25 Jul

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. There are always more interesting photography subjects somewhere else other than the place we live. Or are there?

Now is your chance to make photos from ordinary things you find in and around your own house and neighborhood.

Darwin Bell

By darwin Bell

Eduardo Mueses

Weekly Photography Challenge – Ordinary Objects

So go find some old shoes, bottles, bottle caps, string, tools, kitchen utensils – anything that might make an interesting photo. The key to making great a photo of something you see every day is to use good lighting, camera angle, choose the right lens, and camera settings.

Perhaps you could try some macro photography, or black and white, or a new post-processing technique. The more you shoot near home and practice and experiment – the better you’ll be equipped for situations that present themselves later. Only putting in your 10,000 hours will get you to “expert” status.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Shadows

18 Jul

To have a strong shadow you must have a hard light source, one that is small and harsh. That includes:

  • Direct sunlight
  • A spotlight
  • A bright flashlight
  • Streetlights

Have a look on an overcast day – you cannot see your own shadow.

Oiluj Samall Zeid

Weekly Photography Challenge – Shadows

This week it’s your job to find and photography some shadows (like these). Keep in mind what a good shadow photograph is:

  • Shows the shape of something easily identifiable
  • Dramatic
  • Graphic
  • About shapes and form
  • Often found late in the day or early morning when the sun is low and the shadows are longer

On the other side of the coin also consider what is not a shadow:

  • A silhouette
  • A reflection
Hernán Piñera

By Hernán Piñera

The image above is a silhouette not a shadow. The light is coming from behind the subject and while there is a shadow the outline of the subject is the actual person not a shadow. This is the key difference.

Stefano Corso

By Stefano Corso

In the image above the outlines are reflections, not shadows.

Be clear on the difference between the three when you head out to shoot your shadows like these:
