Weekly Photography Challenge – Beards

11 Jul

Men with beards have become commonplace in my area. Guys without them are almost more noticeable than those with a beard. Have a look at this bunch of images of bearded guys as an example.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Beards

This week’s challenge is just about having some fun with it. Go out and see if you can find some guys with beards and photograph them. If not, think outside the box – who or what else might have a beard?

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bright Colors

04 Jul

In this image roundup I gathered a set of images that contain bright colors, more specifically the colors of summer.

James Blunt

By James Blunt

Your challenge this week will be to do similar.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bright Colors

The real challenge with incorporating bright colors into your photography is to make sure you have a clear subject. Of course the subject can be color itself as well, but you need to still showcase the subject. Keep that in mind as you tackle this one.

Even if it’s not summer in your part of the world, go find some bright colors and make some good photographs.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bad Weather

27 Jun

Earlier I shared some images by photographers who braved the elements to take some bad weather images.

Where there is adversity, often there is opportunity. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, don’t run for cover so fast. Look for photography subjects everywhere. Wet pavement, puddles, reflections, wind blowing the trees, evil looking storm clouds over the horizon – all can make for intriguing photographs.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Night Photography

20 Jun

Recently I rounded up some great examples of stunning night photography. It’s a genre of photography that is popular with many and comes with its own challenges and issues to overcome. But it’s worth the effort as you can create images with something special. Places just look different at night.

Darlene Hildebrandt

Route 66 near Chicago – By Darlene Hildebrandt

Above are a couple examples of my own night photography. Now it’s your turn.

Weekly photography challenge – night photography

If you haven’t tried long exposure photography or gone out and done some shooting at night, now is the perfect time to try it. Find a buddy to come along with you, it’s more fun if you work with a friend. Photography clubs and meetup groups often do group events for night photography, look for one in your area. Find a mentor who has some experience with night photography to help you get started.

Try some star shots, city light, light trails, moon or Milky Way shots, painting with light, or even a portrait. If you need some assistance see the list of articles below that can give you some tips.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Posing People

13 Jun

Editor’s note: this week we will be featuring a series of articles on posing for portraits. Look for a new one each day. If you miss any make sure you subscribe to our newsletter and you’ll get a reminder of all our articles once a week.

Creating portraits is hard. There’s a lot of technical stuff you need to handle, and you have a real live subject in front of your camera. Even further, they are going to look to you for help to make them comfortable and look good in their photos. The right pose, whether casual or structured, is key.

Greg L. Photos

By Greg L. photos

James Schaap

By James Schaap

Adults, teens and kids each come with different challenges. So you need to figure out what’s best for each individual, and guide them gently. Groups add even more complexity.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Posing People

This week’s challenge is about practicing working with people and doing some posing. If this is an area that’s new for you then try and get a model or subject that will be patient with you as you try different things. Or you could work with a professional model (in exchange for prints is a common practice if you can’t afford to pay for one) who can help you suggest poses or even do their own. Learning by watching is great way to go too.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Street Photography

06 Jun

In this previous post I shared a bunch of street photography images. But not just any old random ones. They are images that were taken all around the world, but yet still have a common thread, a connection. They included:

  • Photographers shooting other photographers
  • Subways, taxis and transportation
  • Markets and vendors
  • And buskers or street musicians

Now the challenge is over to you. Go do some street photography, and if you want to take the challenge up a notch then try to work with the themes mentioned above. See if you can add to the body of work in those categories and let’s see how far and wide dPS readers reach. When you post you photo please tell us where it was taken.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Still Life

30 May

In this set of images I rounded up some imaginative images of objects, non-living things. Things don’t always have to appear as they really are in photos. Light, the right lens selection and angle of view can create an image of an everyday, seemingly ordinary object, and make it look interesting.

~lzee~by~the~Sea~is~not~really~all~here~

By ~lzee~by~the~Sea~is~not~really~all~here~

So your goal this week is to find some inanimate objects to photograph – in an interesting way. Use your imagination and creativity. How can you bring this ordinary thing to life? What camera settings or techniques can you use? What is the best lighting? You can use natural light, or flash, it’s up to you.

Look around your house, see what you can find just sitting around that might make a good subject. Don’t be afraid to place it where you want, or even take it outside on location. Use a reflector to add light, or add off-camera flash for more dynamic lighting. The possibilities are unlimited and your subject has all the patience in the world – so experiment and have fun with it.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Get Buggy With It

23 May

Editor’s Note: This is part a series on macro photography this week. Look for a new one each day. The next newsletter will have them all if you miss any!

This week we’re focusing (pun intended) on one specialized area of photography, macro or close up photography. True macro photography means that you are close enough to reproduce the subject 1:1 or actual size on the camera sensor (or film). Usually that requires a special macro lens but there are other ways to do it – check out: 3 Ways to Try Macro Photography on a Budget for some ideas. See more examples of bug images here.

Laurenz Bobke

By Laurenz Bobke

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bugs Close-up

Your challenge this week is to get buggy with it – go find some creepy crawlers, multi-legged creatures, flying nuisances and photograph them. Get as close as you can with the equipment you have, perhaps give reverse lens macro a try if you haven’t got extension tubes or a macro lens.

Here are a few examples:

Weekly Photography Challenge – Roads and Pathways

16 May

In this earlier post from this morning I share:  28 Wondrous Images of Long and Winding Roads

Trey Ratcliff

By Trey Ratcliff

Roads and paths are easy to find – whether you live in the city in an urban area, or in the country – there are roads. A dirt track, a walkway, a sidewalk, or a highway – find a road or path and start shooting.

Use the lines of the road to create an interesting and powerful composition. Lead the viewer into the image and tell a story. Like this images:

Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

09 May

Today I rounded up some images of some special places. Some architectural wonders, many full of history – all special to the people who visit them. This is various places of worship.

Neil Howard

By Neil Howard

That could mean a number of different types of buildings and places including:

  • Small home town churches
  • Basilicas
  • Mosques
  • Synagogues
  • Temples
  • Wats
  • Even cemeteries

Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

In my quest for example images I found a lot of HDR images of interiors – many that were quite a bit over done, at least for my tastes. I even found some of my own images dating back to 2010 when I first started experimenting with HDR and they were making my eyes bleed – my own images! See this article on the stages of HDR photographers, see if you can relate.

So I redid a few from the Montreal Notre Dame Basilica, an amazing thing to see and photograph. I used the new Lightroom 6 (CC) Merge to HDR feature – see what you think.

churches-dps717px-01

churches-dps717px-02

churches-dps717px-03

Just for comparison here are my old versions, my first attempts from 2010. Even pros and teachers make mistakes but we aren’t too big to admit them.

Multiple image HDR

churches-dps717px-05

churches-dps717px-06

“Ewww” right? I agree – let’s move on!

Okay here are some other good examples (in my opinion) of places of worship.

Now it’s your turn. Think outside the box to other places besides those listed about that might be considered for worship. A quiet outdoor coffee shop, how about sunrise on a deserted beach? What places do people go to find solice and think, or pray (if so inclined)?

Note: please be respectful of people inside places or worship. Those are NOT public areas and you do not have free rights to photograph them. By all means photograph the architecture if you’re allowed but always ask before taking someone’s photo inside.

A couple more ideas from my own image collection. Keep in mind you can do bits and pieces of places too, not just grand sweeping wide angle shots. How quiet is this shot of the candles? How meaningful is it though, and does it tell a story of the place?
