Canon EOS 6D Mark II firmware 1.0.4 update fixes ‘rare’ operational bugs

Canon has released firmware update 1.0.4 for the EOS 6D Mark II, adding important bug fixes for “rare instances” of issues with the touch panel and operation buttons. The update, which is available from Canon’s support website here, is about 30MB in size and includes the following changelog:

Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes:

1. Corrects a phenomenon in which in rare instances, the operation buttons and some touch panel functions do not respond.

Magix celebrates 10th birthday with biggest ever performance update

Video editing software package Video Pro X has received what is described as its biggest update yet, to mark ten years since Magix Video Pro was launched. Owner Magix says the update focuses on speed and performance, and includes new tools to make editors’ lives easier.

Magix says that rendering HEVC/H.265 video can now done using the NVIDIA GPU encoder making export much faster than before, while AVX optimization speeds up image processing and improves the accuracy of color correction.

The company also says it has introduced easier methods for working with overlapping audio and video clips, and that its effects interface is now more clearly organized. Green screen work is improved, as is the package’s ability to handle and manipulate 360° content, and users can now edit stereo video footage as well.

For video editors who work regularly with overlapping objects, such as spoken audio spanning several scenes in documentaries and interviews, work will become noticeably easier, and object content can now be moved more flexibly. From now on, users can intuitively select and adjust image content from video objects with a click of the mouse while maintaining the editing rhythm.

Nokia 8 update adds new Pro Camera mode with manual controls

Last week, HMD Global released a software update for the Nokia 8 smartphone that added a new Pro Camera mode. The mode, which resembles the camera controls offered on older Nokia handsets, gives users manual control over five camera functions: shutter speed, ISO, white balance, focus, and exposure.

The Nokia 8 Android handset features dual rear 13MP cameras with Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, PDAF and a dual tone flash. The handset supports 4K video recording with 360-degree audio. With the newly added Pro Camera mode, users can view the changes each manual adjustment makes to the final image in real time.

The update is currently rolling out globally.

Skydio R1 autonomous camera drone gets four new cinematic modes in update

The Skydio R1 aerial “self-flying camera” received its first major software update today, gaining four new cinematic modes: Quarter Lead, Quarter Follow, Car Follow, and Car Tripod. Skydio underscores the new Car Follow mode as the biggest new feature, one that enables the drone to follow vehicles autonomously while capturing footage.

Talking about the software update is Skydio CEO Adam Bry, who said, “With Skydio R1, cinematography becomes a software defined experience. That means we can regularly introduce fundamentally new capabilities over time for all existing and future users.”

The R1 is billed as an advanced autonomous device thanks in part to the NVIDIA Jetson AI supercomputer powering the device. According to Skydio, the Car Follow feature is made possible via neural networks trained using automobile image datasets.

In addition to the new operation modes, R1’s software update optimizes the Skydio Autonomy Engine prediction system to enable more intelligent obstacle handling. The drone’s companion mobile app has received UI improvements that simplify accessing the new cinematic modes, and the update also improves the landing experience by showing operators exactly where the drone will land.

The Skydio R1 is available through Skydio’s website for $ 2,499 USD.

Nikon D5 firmware update adds useful ‘recall shooting functions’ feature

Nikon has released firmware version 1.30 for its D5 professional DSLR, and the new camera software offers a new feature that’s potentially very useful: recall shooting functions.

The “recall shooting functions” option is now available for Custom settings f1 (custom control assignment) and can be configured so that pressing and holding specific controls will recall previously saved exposure settings (including shutter speed and aperture). The function is designed to allow for quick changes of shooting parameters in variable light conditions.

The function can be assigned to the Preview button, Fn1 button, Fn2 button, AF-ON button, Sub-selector center, AF-ON button for vertical shooting, or Lens focus function buttons. If you are using a WR-1 or WR-T10 remote control, it can also be assigned to the Fn buttons on those controls. An addendum to the camera manual that explains the new function in more detail can be downloaded on the Nikon website.

All other changes in this update are fairly minor. The focal lengths of some AF-S and AF-I lenses that are displayed with a teleconverter attached to the camera have been updated, and the time zone display in the Setup Menu only shows the names of major cities in the currently selected time zone. There are also a couple of minor bug fixes.

Leaked Panasonic firmware update is made official

Panasonic had been planning on a May 30th announcement and release of firmware updates for its GH5, GH5S and G9 models, only to have that plan foiled by a leak of the announcement in Japan today. So while you can’t download the actual firmware updates themselves until next week, here’s a high-level look at what you can expect from the new software.

Autofocus performance is said to be improved on all three models for both stills and video shooting along with an improvement of the quality and performance of sound recording during video. For the G9 and GH5, the image stabilizer has been tweaked, and there have been some refinements of the high-resolution mode for the flagship G9.

Unfortunately, the web pages with all of the nitty gritty details for each camera (see the links in the press release below) aren’t yet live, so we can’t comment on what exactly the ‘New Functions’ and ‘Other Improvements’ will be for each model. That said, we’re certainly looking forward to seeing how effective these AF enhancements will be when they land next week.

Major Fuji X-T2 firmware update adds internal F-log recording, slow-mo, and more

Fujifilm has released a major firmware update for the Fuji X-T2 that may make it even harder for owners of that camera to justify the jump to the newly-released Fuji X-H1. As we mentioned in our review—and as Chris and Jordan pointed out in Episode 2 of DPRTV—the price of the X-H1 makes it a tough sell to owners of the X-T2 who have been looking to upgrade. And now, with Firmware Version 4.0, those users may not want to upgrade anymore anyhow.

Version 4.0 replaces version 3.0 (imagine that), and adds nine new features in all. Some of the video highlights include the ability to record 4:2:0 F-log directly to the SD card, and the addition of a 1080p 120fps slow motion mode. There are also major improvements to the Phase Detect AF algorithm, with the low-light limit dropping from +0.5EV to -1.0EV, the maximum aperture increasing from F8 to F11, and “major improvements” in AF-C performance while operating zoom. Finally, a focus bracketing feature has been added that lets you bracketing up to 999 frames in intervals of focus shift between 1 and 10.

There’s no word on whether the X-T2 gains the improved video processing of the X-H1 (it doesn’t gain 200Mbps capture), but this is one of the things we’ll be checking when we re-assess the X-T2 review in the coming weeks.

Release Notes:

The firmware update Ver.4.00 from Ver.3.00 incorporates the following issues:

  1. Addition of “Focus Bracketing”
    The update will enable the photographer to shoot focus distance bracketing up to 999 frames. When the photographer starts shooting, the focal location is shifted with each activation of the shutter by the step of focus shift set from 1 to 10.
  2. Compatible with the newly developed cinema lens FUJINON MKX18-55mm T2.9 lens and FUJINON MKX50-135mm T2.9 lens
    • Aperture information can be displayed on the monitor. The upgrade allows users to select T-stop or F-stop.
    • The upgrade allows users to check the focus distance with the distance indicator shown on the monitor.
    • Automatically corrects the distortion and the color/brightness shading.
    • Camera automatically calculate the White Balance based on the lens position and deliver the color expressions with Film Simulation modes.
  3. Enlarged and customizable indicators or information
    The upgrade allows users to enlarge indicators and information in the viewfinder and/or LCD monitor. This upgrade will also enable users to customize the location of where the information is shown on the display.
  4. Addition of F-log SD card recording
    The upgrade allows users to record F-log movie data into their SD card.
  5. Addition of 1080/120P high-speed video mode
    The upgrade allows users to shoot 1080/120P high-speed video (1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 speed slow motion), ideal for recording spectacular slow-motion footage.
  6. Enhanced Phase Detection AF
    Latest updates to the AF algorithm provide the following performance enhancements:
    • The low-light limit for phase detection autofocus has been improved by approximately 1.5 stops from 0.5EV to -1.0EV, raising the precision and speed of autofocus in low-light environments.
    • The range at minimum aperture has been expanded from F8 to F11. For example, even when using the XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR with the tele converter XF2X TC WR, phase detection autofocus can now be used.
    • Major improvements have been made to the AF-C performance while operating the zoom, which provides major benefits when shooting sports and other scenarios in which the subjects moves unpredictably.
    • Finely-detailed surface textures of wild birds and wild animals can now be captured at high speed and with high precision as a result of improvement in phase detection autofocus.
  7. Addition of “Flicker Reduction”
    For enhancing the quality of indoor sports photography, the upgrade allows users to reduce flicker in pictures and the display when shooting under fluorescent lighting and other similar light sources.
  8. Addition of “Select Folder” and “Create Folder”
    Enables the user to choose the folder in which subsequent pictures will be stored. And also enable to enter a five-character folder name to create a new folder in which to store subsequent pictures.
  9. New functions are added to store and read of camera settings by FUJIFILM X Acquire
    Once connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X Acquire” allows users to backup/restore camera settings to/from a file. With “FUJIFILM X Acquire” (ver.1.7 or newer), CUSTOM REGISTRATION/EDIT settings are also stored and read.

Adobe Photoshop Express update brings perspective correction and vignetting

The Android version of Adobe’s popular mobile image editing app, Photoshop Express, has just received an update expanding the feature set with a few useful new functions.

Perspective Correction lets you correct converging lines and other types of perspective distortion. You can select a Full Auto setting or pick vertical or horizontal skew. The correction is then applied and fine-tuned using a slider.

Some type of vignette effect is available on most editing apps out there, so it’s about time the feature has made its way to Photoshop Express too. You can adjust the diameter of the vignetting effect by pinch-zooming and set the intensity on a slider to create the final result.

Additionally, it’s now also possible to share multiple images directly from the gallery, and change wallpaper and profile pictures directly from the app’s share screen.

The new functions are welcome additions to the app’s already quite extensive feature set, making Adobe Photoshop Express worth a closer look for anyone who edits images on a mobile device. The latest version of the app can be downloaded free of charge from the Google Play Store now.

Halide update adds Apple Watch support, self-timer and more

The makers of Halide today released an update to version 1.8 of the iPhone camera app, introducing a number of major new features.

A new Apple Watch companion app gives you access to framing tools, lets you set the timer and trigger the camera remotely, all from your wrist. You get an image preview on the watch display and according to the developers the watch app has been designed for fast and responsive operation.

For those without an Apple Watch, there is now also a timer mode in the main app, which can be set to 3, 10, or 30 seconds and comes with a countdown on the display for front camera use. When shooting with the main camera, countdown progress is signaled by the flash LED.

In addition there is an updated image review module with a grid-style layout, support for Dynamic and Bold type and VoiceOver support for improved accessibility. For privacy purposes you can now also prevent location information from being embedded in your EXIF data and select options to limit location sharing with connected social apps.

The Halide 1.8 update is free to existing customers. Everyone else can download the latest version of the app from the App Store for $ 5.99.
