Adobe apologizes for Lightroom Classic CC bugs, releases bug fix update

The latest update to Lightroom Classic CC—a ‘massive update’ to camera profiles for both Lightroom and ACR—came complete with an infuriating set of bugs that, judging by our comment section, left Adobe users quite frustrated. But have no fear: the software giant is back with an apology and a slew of bug fixes in the form of Adobe Lightroom Classic CC 7.3.1.

The release went live this morning, complete with this apology on the Adobe blog:

We heard your feedback and felt that parts of the release didn’t uphold the level of quality that we hold ourselves to. We’re happy to report that these issues were resolved and now available for immediate download. Some of the issues resolved included converting presets, sorting and copying/pasting profiles, translation errors, along with crash fixes.

You can download the update and read the full release notes at this link, but here is the TL;DR about what this Lightroom Classic CC update fixes:

  • An issue where some presets were not converting to the new format.
  • An issue with B&W legacy presets where the profile resets to Adobe Standard
  • An issue where Develop presets were not sorting correctly
  • Translation errors in other languages for some profiles
  • An issue where users were unable to copy/sync Black and White Mix settings
  • Lightroom backup catalog error issues.
    • Note: To resolve corruption issue in the backed up catalogs, update to Lightroom Classic CC v7.3.1 and then back up your catalogs again. If you’re backing up your catalogs on macOS, see this known issue related to catalog compression below.
  • Known Issue on macOS only: When backing up your catalogs on macOS, Lightroom Classic doesn’t compress (zip) catalogs that have a file size less than 4 GB. As a workaround to this issue, manually compress the backed up catalog files. Compressed files take up less hard disk space. By default, Lightroom Classic saves backed up catalogs to the following location on macOS:
    • /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/[catalog name]/Backups

To update to the latest version, simply run the update in the Creative Cloud Desktop App.

Capture One update adds new styles workflow, updated camera support

Phase One has launched the first major update to Capture One Pro 11, the company’s Raw conversion and photo editing software. Capture One 11.1 brings along a few important new features, including improved import performance, an updated styles workflow, a new resource hub, enhanced LCC presets, and support for new cameras and lenses.

The most obvious changes in the update come in the form of new workflow adjustments that should speed up the importing and processing of large numbers of photos. Now, you can apply styles and presets directly to a photo or on top of it as a layer; for even more control, you can control the opacity to make sure the effect is as subtle or significant as you want it to be.

Capture One has also thrown in a new ‘Spring’ collection as part of its included styles packs.

A new ‘Normalize’ tool has also been added to the workflow. This tool replaces the old ‘Skin Tone White Balance’ tab within the white balance module and, “is designed to make easier baseline corrections to images.”

And if you’re new to Capture One (or simply want to refresh your skill set) Capture One has dropped the learning curve by adding a new Resource Hub. You can now get instant access to free learning resources directly in the app, including: tutorials, webinars, news, and blogs, plus direct access to support and Capture One’s web shop.

Rylo update adds 180° mode, bluetooth capture and motion blur timelapse effect

The popular Rylo 360° camera—a camera we called the “360 degree camera done right” in our review—is receiving a major update today. The update adds two new features for both iOS and Android users of the Rylo camera and app, with a third feature available only to iOS users for now.

Let’s take them one by one.

180° Mode

The new 180° video mode shrinks the field of view, allowing you to capture 180° video at higher resolution and better image quality than 360° mode allows. According to Rylo, 180° mode “is especially useful for chest-mounted shots or activities/scenarios in which one lens is blocked.”

Bluetooth Remote Capture

The name kind of gives this one away. Remote capture lets you sync your phone to the Rylo camera via bluetooth, which allows you to: switch between recording modes, start or stop a video, and snap a photo, all from the app on your phone.

Obviously, this feature will help if you’ve got the camera mounted somewhere hard to reach.

Motion Blur

A new feature for timelapse shooting, Motion Blur adds a ‘cinematic’ motion blur effect that is actually synced up to the speed of your timelapse shots (more speed = more blur). The effect doesn’t show up while shooting, but will be viewable upon export.

All three features ship today, although Bluetooth Remote Capture is currently only available for iOS, with Android support “coming soon.”

Sony fixes a7 lll ‘blinking pixels’ video issue with firmware 1.01 update

Sony has released the first firmware update for the Sony a7 III—version 1.01—and it was specifically released to solve a “blinking pixel” issue that showed up when recording video footage while using certain settings.

The flickering pixels would appear along the base of footage “during XAVC S 4K (PAL 25p) recording (depending on the combination of camera settings).” Additionally, the update resolves a problem that could occasionally make the rear touch screen stop working, and Sony says the camera’s system should run more smoothly with the new firmware as well.

Luminar Jupiter update brings new Raw conversion engine and big performance boost

Skylum Software—the artist formerly known as Macphun—has released a major update to its photo editing program Luminar. The update, known as Luminar Jupiter, brings more than 300 updates and improvements, including a big performance boost for both Mac and Windows users, automatic lens correction tools, a new Raw conversion engine, and much more.

One of the biggest improvements Luminar Jupiter brings is speed. According to Skylum, the update improves performance by up to 5x on Windows devices and a whopping 12x on MacOS, as illustrated in the graphics below:

Fujifilm X-T20 firmware update improves subject tracking, enhances touchscreen functionality

In addition to the six other firmware updates released today, Fujifilm also released the previously announced upgrade to the X-T20. The most interesting features include:

  • Improved AF tracking: the company says that the camera can track moving subjects at twice the speed of the previous firmware. The X-T20 can now track subjects 50% smaller than before.
  • New touchscreen controls: Users can now move the AF area by touch when in ‘focus zoom’ mode. The Quick Menu can now be operated by touch, as well.
  • Exposure improved with face detection
  • RGB and highlight warnings now available

Here’s the full list of improvements:

The firmware update Ver.2.00 from Ver.1.11 incorporates the following issues:

1. New AF tracking algorithm for moving subjects
Thanks to the newly developed image recognition algorithm, the update enhances AF-C to track moving subjects twice as fast as previous firmware. In addition, the update also enhances tracking to be able to capture up to 50% smaller moving subjects than before.

2. Enhanced touch screen operation
The firmware update will add some of the touch screen operation features which are currently available on the FUJIFILM X-E3. These touch screen features include:
1) The Auto Focus area can be moved when in focus zoom with flick operation.
2) Pinch-in/out operation in playback mode will be updated to go from full-frame playback to multi-frame playback (Nine-frame view and Hundred-frame view)
3) Select the frame in multi-frame playback with tap or drag operation or return to full-frame playback by double-tapping
4) Q (Quick) menu selection
5) Input character with touch key-board (*1)

3. Support “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO”
After connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” enables users to convert RAW files with X Processor Pro. Fast batch processing will also be available. The “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” can be downloaded from the FUJIFILM website for free.

4. Support for backup/restore of camera settings via FUJIFILM X Acquire
Once connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X Acquire” allows users to backup/restore camera settings to/from a file. Copying all camera settings from one camera to another is available.
*Settings other than date and custom white balance can be backup and restored.

5. Compatible with the newly developed FUJINON XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens
The upgrade will add compatibility for the newly developed FUJINON XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens.
1) When changing the focus mode (AF/MF), the focus ring function (fine zoom adjustment, manual focus) automatically switches.
* Focus ring function when focus mode is “S” or “C”?Fine Zoom adjustment.
* Focus ring function when focus mode is “M”?Manual focus.
2) Memorize the lens zoom position when power off and return to the position when power on
3) Maintain the lens zoom position in playback mode to shorten the startup time for the next shooting

6. Improve radio flash controller usability
The upgrade allows users to shoot with compatible third party studio flash in high speed sync. or TTL mode via their radio controllers.

7. RGB histogram display and highlight warning
If you press the function button in the histogram, RGB histogram and highlight warning (high brightness portion will blink) will be displayed.

8. Enlarged and customizable indicators or information
The upgrade allows users to enlarge indicators and information in the viewfinder and/or LCD monitor. This upgrade will also enable users to customize the location of where the information is shown on the display. When enlarged display, some icons are not displayed like distance indicator, focus frame, focus mode, focus warning, microphone/remote release, AF+MF, button lock and sound and flash indicator.

Apple made a big splash in the video industry last week when it debuted ProRes RAW: a new video codec that seeks to combine the flexibility and editing latitude of RAW video with the performance and space benefits of a compressed ProRes file. And now, thanks to a free firmware update from Atomos, owners of the Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 monitor/recorders can immediately begin shooting in the new and improved format.

Simply download and install the AtomOS 9 firmware at this link, and your Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 will be able to record ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ using any of the nine supported cinema cameras from Panasonic, Sony and Canon. As of this writing, that makes the Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 the first and only monitor/recorders to offer ProRes RAW.

Apple introduces new ProRes RAW video format with Final Cut Pro X update

In a surprise update ahead of NAB, Apple has introduced a brand new video format called ProRes RAW. The format was introduced alongside an update to Final Cut Pro X, which also added advanced closed captioning tools for professional filmmakers.

The captioning tools are neat—they allow video editors to more easily create, view, edit, and deliver captions, with support for both the CEA-608 and iTT formats—but this feature will no doubt be overshadowed by the much bigger news: the introduction of ProRes RAW.

As the name suggests, ProRes RAW is an evolution of the Apple ProRes video codec. Apple claims that ProRes RAW “combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the stunning performance of ProRes.” By pulling RAW data from the sensor, video editors will have a lot more dynamic range flexibility—important as more and more displays, including Apple’s own iPhone X, become capable of displaying true HDR—all while taking advantage of the space and performance benefits of a compressed ProRes file.

In fact, Apple claims that ProRes RAW files take up less space than ProRes 4444. And since it’s Apple’s format, it has been performance optimized for macOS so that you can play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on your current MacBook Pro or iMac in real time without rendering.

The format drops today, and already Apple has made inroads into the professional community with Atomos and DJI. ProRes RAW compatibility will be made available as a free update for Atomos Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 users, and as “a free update for users with the RAW activation package” for the DJI Inspire 2 Drone and Zenmuse X7 camera.

Once updated, Final Cut Pro users will be able to work natively with ProRes RAW and the ProRes RAW HQ files created by the two Atomos external recorders mentioned above.

Final Cut Pro X update introduces ProRes RAW and advanced closed captioning

Apple is introducing a new update to Final Cut Pro X, the most popular version of its professional video editing software, with more than 2.5 million seats. Final Cut Pro 10.4.1 introduces a groundbreaking format from Apple, ProRes RAW, which combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the performance of ProRes. The update also adds advanced closed captioning tools that allow video editors to easily view, edit and deliver captions from right within the app. Apple is also adding complementary new features to Final Cut Pro companion apps, Motion and Compressor.

ProRes RAW

ProRes RAW is a new format from Apple that offers the quality and workflow advantages of RAW with the stunning performance of ProRes. With ProRes RAW, editors can import, edit and grade pristine footage with RAW data from the camera sensor, providing ultimate flexibility when adjusting highlights and shadows — ideal for HDR workflows. And with performance optimized for macOS, editors can play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on MacBook Pro and iMac systems in real time without rendering. ProRes RAW files are even smaller than ProRes 4444 files, allowing editors to make better use of storage while providing an excellent format for archiving.

Final Cut Pro editors can work natively with ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ files created by Atomos recorders. The format will be available as a free update for owners of Atomos Sumo 19 and Shogun Inferno devices. The format will also be available as part of a forthcoming upgrade package to users of the DJI Inspire 2 drone and Zenmuse X7 Super 35mm camera system designed for aerial cinematography.

Closed Captioning Tools

As closed captioning becomes increasingly important around the world, Final Cut Pro now includes powerful closed captioning tools for professional filmmakers, YouTubers and students looking to add captions to their projects without the need for expensive third-party software or services. Users can import closed caption files directly into their project or create them from scratch. Captions appear in the viewer during playback and can be attached to video or audio clips in the timeline, so they automatically move with the clips to which they’re connected. An all-new captions inspector makes it simple to adjust caption text, color, alignment, location and more. Users can even create captions in multiple languages within the same timeline and easily share captioned videos to YouTube and Vimeo. And in the share window, a new Roles tab displays titles, video and audio roles in a single consolidated interface, making it easy to configure roles and closed captions when sharing.

Motion 5.4.1 and ProRes RAW enable motion graphics artists to take full advantage of RAW image quality with superb performance and flexibility when designing graphics and effects. Compressor 4.4.1 gains support for closed captioning with comprehensive controls to view, adjust and deliver captions as part of a batch or iTunes Store package.

Free Atomos Shogun Inferno update will let you capture 5.7K RAW on the Panasonic EVA1

Atomos’ Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 external HDR monitor/recorders are about to get a free upgrade that will really delight owners of the popular Super 35 Panasonic AU-EVA1 cinema camera. The update—full details incoming at NAB 2018—will allow EVA1 owners to capture 5.7K Raw video direct from the sensor at up to 30fps using the recorders’ 6G SDI connections.

If you pull that down to 4K resolution, you can record Raw video at up to 60fps in CDNG Raw, as well as straight to Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR formats. If you drop the resolution further to 2K, you can record slow-motion Raw video at 240fps. According to Atomos, “the resulting frames are super clean, detailed and capable of withstanding heavy grading.”

For those of us not into video, it’s worth noting why this is a big deal.

The Panasonic EVA1 is a camera that a lot of DSLR/mirrorless users consider when they get serious about video. Support for 5.7K Raw on a ~$ 7-8K cinema camera of this quality is pretty compelling. It’s a logical next step for people who want to go beyond DSLR/mirrorless video.

We won’t dive into the Shogun Inferno or Sumo19’s other features here, but you can learn more on the Atomos website. And if you already own one of these recorders, keep an eye out—this free AtomOS update will be released at NAB 2018 later this month.

Atomos Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 unlock the Panasonic AU-EVA1 5.7K RAW output

Melbourne, Australia – 02 April 2018 – Panasonic’s AU-EVA1 is a great Super35 cine camera with excellent low light capabilities – winning wide-spread acclaim since its launch last year.

Now users will be able to unlock the true potential of this amazing camera and its low noise sensor by combining it with the Atomos Shogun Inferno HDR monitor/recorder, thanks to the release of Panasonic’s free RAW output upgrade. The results take the camera to another level of performance, giving you images with maximum dynamic range in pristine quality.

Users will soon be able to capture stunning 5.7K RAW imagery direct from the sensor at up to 30 fps over the 6G SDI connections and record it to reliable, affordable SSD media. Full details will be revealed by Atomos at the NAB 2018 show this month.

In 4K resolution you can record up to 60fps from the RAW output in production ready Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHR,or CDNG RAW up to 2Kp120 or 4Kp30. The resulting frames are super clean, detailed and capable of withstanding heavy grading.

The Shogun Inferno also supercharges the EVA1’s slow motion performance. It can record the RAW output at up to 240fps in 2k/HD, direct to Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR. Perfect for sports, wildlife and a wide range of other uses.

All these features will come in an AtomOS upgrade for the Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 to be released at NAB April 2018. This will be offered for free as part of our continuing commitment to our users.

Of course, recording is only half of the equation, accurate monitoring is also essential. Luckily, the Shogun Inferno also offers state-of-the-art monitoring for both HDR and SDR recording with its 7” 1500nit high brightness panel with the Sumo19 at 19” and 1200nits.

Take the guesswork out of exposure in HDR or Log with Atomos’ unique AtomHDR system which shows a massive 10+ stops of dynamic range on either screen. The display is colour accurate and can be calibrated over time using a X-rite i1Display Pro probe. Adobe releases ‘massive update’ to Camera Profiles in ACR and Lightroom

Earlier today, Adobe launched a major update to Camera Profiles (now known as just “Profiles”) in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), Lightroom Classic CC, Lightroom CC, and both versions of Lightroom Mobile. The update brings six new Adobe RAW profiles, over 40 new Creative profiles, a new profile browser, and a bunch of new features and feature enhancements across both mobile and desktop.

The most significant update here is obviously Profiles.

Camera Profiles has now been renamed “Profiles”, and the whole panel has been moved so it’s easier to find. In Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic CC, Profiles have been moved from the Camera Calibration panel into the Basics panel; in Lightroom CC, they’ve been added to the top of the edit panel.

But this update isn’t just about adding Profiles to Lightroom CC and moving them around a bit. There are now six new Adobe RAW profiles to work with.

Previously, the only Adobe RAW profile you had at your disposal was Adobe Standard. Now, you’ve got six more to choose from:

  • Adobe Color: designed to improve the look and rendering of warm tones, improve the transition between certain color ranges, and slightly increase the starting contrast of your photos. As the new default, it was designed to work with the widest range of photos.
  • Adobe Monochrome: Tuned to be “a great starting point” for any black & white photo. Results in better tonal separation and contrast than Adobe Standard converted to B&W.
  • Adobe Landscape: Produces more vibrant skies and foliage tones.
  • Adobe Neutral: Provides a starting point with very low contrast. Adobe claims this one is most useful “for photos where you want the most control, or that have very difficult tonal ranges.”
  • Adobe Portrait: Provides “more control and better reproduction of skin tones.” This means less contrast and saturation applied to skin tones throughout the photo, so you have more control over how those tones turn out.
  • Adobe Vivid: A “punchy, saturated starting point.”

The point of each of these profiles (and Adobe Standard) is to give your images a unified “look and feel” regardless of the camera you’re using. But now, rather than a single profile, you’ve got six “starting points” to choose from depending on your genre and photo editing style.

Adobe Color replaces 10-year-old Adobe Standard as the default profile for newly imported photos, but you’ll still have access to all of them in the new Profiles section of the Basics panel.

New Creative Profiles

You now have 40+ Creative profiles to choose from, split up into four groups: Artistic, Modern, Vintage, and Black & White. These profiles can be applied to both Raw and non-Raw photos, and come with a 3D Lookup Table (LUT) for a level of control that was previously reserved for Photoshop.

Additionally, Adobe has also been working with some popular Lightroom preset creators to create a range of 3rd Party Profiles, some of which are already available today. These include profiles by photographers Brian Matiash and Matt Kloskowski, and companies like RNI Films and Contrastly.

Updates to Lightroom CC on Android and iOS

In addition to the Profiles update described above, Lightroom CC for iOS, Android and ChromeOS all got some feature updates and upgrades as well.

On the Android/ChromeOS front, a new Details tab provides Sharpening and Noise Reduction options, Grain options have been added for “realistic film grain,” and some additional control for sharing images over Lightroom CC Web have been added as well.

For iOS users, the new Geometry tab will help you straighten crooked and skewed photos using new Upright, Guided Upright, and Geometry sliders; the same Grain options mentioned above have been added, and Adobe has introduced a Left-Handed Editing Mode on the iPad. The company has also done some iPhone X layout optimizations to take advantage of the dreaded notch.

A Few More Things

Finally, in addition to everything mentioned above, a few minor improvements have been made to Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC on the Desktop.

In Lightroom Classic CC, the Dehaze tool has been made more accessible by moving it to the Basics panel, the Tone Curve panel has been expanded for better/more precise control, and the face-tagging algorithm has been improved.

In Lightroom CC, support has been added for Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, and a new filter option has been added that allows you to sort your images by “sync status.”
