Apple to fix ‘beauty filter’ issue with iOS 12.1 update

Apple’s iOS 12.1 software update will fix a bug causing the “beautygate” scandal impacting the iPhone XS and XS Max, according to The Verge. Critics have complained about overly smooth skin in selfies taken with the front-facing camera on the iPhone XS, believing it to be the result of a beauty filter akin to what Samsung uses on some of its phones.

Earlier this month, Sebastiaan de With, developer of iOS camera app Halide, had placed blame for the issue on excessive noise reduction, but The Verge reports that Smart HDR is to blame. The feature may incorrectly choose a base frame captured with a longer shutter speed, using this frame for preserving detail in the selfie.

The lack of optical image stabilization for the front camera may result in a slight blur on the frame that smooths out some details, this producing the “beauty filter” look some users have complained about. According to the report, iOS 12.1, which is currently in beta, will fix Smart HDR so that it chooses a frame captured with a short shutter speed, eliminating the issue.

Halide update brings Smart RAW, Apple watch update and more

Popular iOS camera app Halide has received its latest update. Halide version 1.10 comes with a new Smart HDR feature, an improved watch app for the Apple Watch Series 4 , and more.

Smart RAW is a feature specifically designed for the new iPhone XS, XS Max and XR models. In a recent blog post Halide founder Sebastiaan de With detailed how the new iPhones tend to use higher ISO values and more aggressive noise reduction than previous iterations, presumably to enable Apple’s new SmartHDR feature and/or reduce motion blur on moving subjects.

Smart RAW uses an exposure logic that is different from the default iPhone camera and uses lower ISOs for lower levels of noise and better image detail in Raw files. The feature is unnecessary on the iPhone X or 8 as those older models use smaller sensors and are by default programmed to use the lowest possible ISO setting.

The update also brings a feature that lets you easily compare JPG image output to its Raw counterpart, allowing you to decide which format is best for a particular job. The Halide watch component has been optimized for the larger screen on Apple’s new Watch Series 4.

The developers say they have also done some cleaning up of the code and have shrunk the app down to half the size of the previous version. You can download Halide version 1.10 now from the Apple App Store for $ 5.99.

Fujifilm X-T3 firmware update fixes distortion, memory card lock issues

Fujifilm released a firmware upgrade (v1.01) for its X-T3 mirrorless camera that addresses issues with distortion compensation when using the electronic shutter in continuous high shooting mode. A bug where the mechanical lock on SD cards was ignored has also been fixed, along with unspecified ‘slight defects’.

Affinity Photo for iPad gets major update, 30% off discount

Affinity Photo for iPad has put out a new update that further improves the Photoshop competitor with new features, updated tools and bug fixes.

Serif, the company behind the Affinity suite, also noted there’s now more than a quarter of a million people worldwide using Affinity Photo for iPad, following on the heels of Apple’s App of the Year accolade it received at WWDC in May 2018.

Affinity Photo version 1.6.9 introduces a long list of changes including ‘massively’ expanded support for touch gesture control, a tweaked UI designed for more intuitive control and better brush management, a new Export persona for easy exporting of multiple layers and a slew of under-the-hood changes to boost performance.

Below is the full list of features and tools that have been updated in Affinity Photo for iPad:

  • Added support for brush nozzle base texture mode.
  • New Undo/Redo gesture with two and three finger tap.
  • Added drag modifiers to studio icons for color, text, navigator and history.
  • Added canvas rotation control via Navigator Studio.
  • Added swipe gesture to swap primary and secondary colors on the Color Studio
  • Context menu now uses a long-press release gesture to invoke.
  • Added two-finger hold gesture to resize a layer from its centre.
  • During shape creation, a two-finger hold gesture will transform the layer.
  • On the Layers Studio, with a layer selected, a two-finger tap on another layer will select all layers in between.
  • On the Layers Studio, pinch inwards (either vertically or horizontally) to group selected layers. To ungroup, do the opposite and pinch out.
  • With the Move Tool active, a two-finger hold gesture on a layer plus a one finger drag duplicates the selected layer.
  • Easy access to merge and rasterize commands via Layer Studio icons.
  • New Export persona. A new workspace for exporting regions of your image as slices.
  • Improved brush stroke lag and small stroke response.
  • Brushes remember previously used stroke settings.
  • Move any custom brush to any category.
  • Added support for on-screen keyboard trackpad mode.
  • Added Tab key to on-screen keyboard context bar.
  • Updated Persona icons.
  • Numerous other improvements and bug fixes.

To entice new users, Serif has announced a 30% off sale through 7AM ET on Tuesday, September 18th. Normally, Affinity Photo for iPad retails for $ 20, but with this discount, you can snag it for $ 14 in the iOS App Store.

Do note Affinity Photo for iPad only supports iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad (early 2017). If you have an older device, it won’t run — so don’t waste your money.

Pixelmator Pro update adds Light Leak effect and more

Pixelmator has announced an update to its Pixelmator Pro image editing software. Version 1.1.4 to brings new effects, a new AI-powered Auto Selective Color adjustment tool and more.

The Auto Selective Color feature uses machine learning to automatically apply selective color adjustments, improving specific colors in an images. A new Light Leak effect adds a vintage film look to your photos and the Bokeh effect simulates the shallow depth of field of a fast lens on a DSLR, similar to what we are seeing on many current smartphone cameras.

There is also a new Spin Blur effect which creates circular motion effects. The Noise effect is something we have seen before on other editing applications and simply lets you add grain to your images. Other new effects include Threshold, Mask to Alpha, Clouds, and more Tile and Distort effects.

Auto White Balance and Auto Lightness preserve skintones better and are 30 percent faster than in previous versions of the software

Pixelmator did not only add new features, however, but also improved some of the existing tools. The company says Auto White Balance and Auto Lightness preserve skintones better and are 30 percent faster than in previous versions of the software. The Color Adjustments and Effects sub-menus now come with Copy, Paste, Reset and Flatten Adjustment options. In addition you can now use a new keyboard shortcut (O) to show the original image while editing.

Flickr announces major update to Galleries section

It’s been fairly quiet around Flickr since it was taken over by SmugMug but now the image sharing platform has announced a major update to its galleries section. The new Flickr galleries come with a redesigned user interface and a number of new tools to “facilitate your creativity.”

In a post on the Flickr Blog the company says that “Flickr’s galleries have long been one of the tools available to our community for visual storytelling, though they have gotten dusty over time as the rest of the site progresses.”

The new layout has been designed for larger screen sizes and resolutions than the previous version and the maximum number of photos in galleries has been increased from 50 to 500. To facilitate work with large numbers of photos you now batch add them to a gallery directly from your Favorites.

“By explicitly connecting Faves to gallery creation, we’re making your workflow simpler when you’re curating your favorite works from other Flickr members,” Flickr says.

On the galleries list page you’ll now find a triptych of photos for each gallery (the cover photo and the two most recent images), plus some metadata.

You can still select any image from the gallery to use it as the cover, edit title and description and reorder images. Galleries can also be shared “with an intuitive share sheet that will improve the presentation of your galleries on other social networks.”

Adobe won’t support older operating systems with its next major Creative Cloud update

If you’re not one to update your computer gear often, you might want to reconsider. Adobe has issued a notice future releases of Creative Cloud programs will no longer support older versions of MacOS and Windows operating systems.

‘As we prepare for our next major release of Creative Cloud, we wanted to share some information on updated operating system requirements,’ says Adobe. ‘To take advantage of the latest operating system features and technologies, the next major release of Creative Cloud will not support Windows 8.1, Windows 10 v1511 and v1607, and Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan).’

Adobe notes all past and current versions of Creative Cloud applications will continue to work on the aforementioned operating systems. Creative Cloud Desktop — the management application for all Creative Cloud apps — will continue to be supported on Windows 7 or later and MacOS 10.9 (Mavericks) and later.

According to Adobe, ‘focusing [its] efforts on more modern versions of Windows and Mac operating systems allows [it] to concentrate on developing the features and functionality most requested by members, while ensuring peak performance that takes advantage of modern hardware.’

Hydra app update brings zoom lens support and improved selfies

The Hydra app from Belgian company Creaceed is one of the more interesting iOS camera apps we have seen in the recent past. Applying multi-frame methods merging up to 60 exposures, Hydra offers a range of clever-looking capture modes, including an HDR mode that combines up to 20 exposures, a Hi-Res mode that can produce up to 32MP images and a Zoom mode that, by making use of the Hi-Res mode technology, allows for digital zoom with better detail than the standard method.

Now the app has received a major update, with version 1.5 finally supporting the optical zoom lens in iPhone dual-camera models. This means that the combination of optical zoom and the app’s advanced digital zoom you can now achieve even better zoom results up to a 8x magnification.

In addition HDR and low light modes are now available on the front camera, allowing for better selfie images in low light and high-contrast scenes.

Hydra 1.5 requires iOS 10.0 and can be downloaded from the App Store for $ 4.99. More information is available on the Hydra website.

Skylum Luminar 2018 1.3.0 update brings many improvements, new camera support

Skylum, the company previously known as Macphun, has released Luminar 2018 update 1.3.0. The Lightroom alternative has received numerous changes across both its Mac and Windows versions, primarily improvements to existing features, as well as support for additional cameras from Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon, and Pentax.

Luminar 2018 is the latest evolution to Skylum’s image editor for Mac and Windows. The 2018 version added a variety of features, improvements, support for Photoshop plugins, and UI changes. Update 1.3.0 builds upon this, adding additional plugin support for Mac, DNG Camera Profiles (DCP) and new features for Windows, and more than a dozen improvements that vary based on operating system.

The Windows version of Luminar 2018 can open Raw files faster post-update due to Raw engine improvements. This version also brings a new White Balance feature with eyedropper to Develop, Raw Develop, and the Color Temperature filters, better filter performance, simplified blending mode selection, and more.

The Mac 1.3.0 version, meanwhile, brings improvements across eight features in addition to support for plugins from the following software: Imagenomic Noiseware 5, Imagenomic Portraiture 3, Imagenomic Realgrain 2, and DxO FilmPack 5. Luminar 2018 for Mac also now has improved support for eight languages, additional file format export options for batch processing, better filter and JPEG controls, and more.
