Want one…? by Brian Shaw on 500px

This weekend is a focus on food photography. Earlier I shared a collection of food images to get you hungry, and encouraged you to do participate doing some food photography in the weekly challenge.

As well two recent articles with some food photography tips:

  • 8 Steps to Create Mouth Watering Food Photography
  • 5 Tips to Seriously Improve Your Food Photography Techniques

Today I wanted to find some video tutorials on food photography for you. Here’s a few that I found.

This first one is by photographer Chris Marquardt as he photographs on location at a restaurant and shows tips for using simple gear, and what you have on hand. Watch as he gets the restaurant owner to be his assistant and uses things like a tablecloth, tin foil and some vegetable oil to help make the food look appetizing and juicy.

Marc Matsumoto, food photographer and chef, (who also has his own food blog where I found some great recipes AND food photos) gives some quick tips in this video that you can apply to take better food photos even if you just have a point and shoot camera or Smartphone.

Lastly on the other end of the scale is a studio food photography set with this video from Adorama featuring photographer Rick Gayle. He talks about lighting, composition, focus, positioning items, food styling, tools of the trade that food photographers use such as: dental tools, WD-40, oil, glycerin, water, Scotchgard, reflectors, mini-mirrors, props and more.

Have some other tips or good videos on food photography, please share in the comments below. Remember the fun of food photography is you get to eat it after you’re done.

Better Landscape Photography Tips and Video Tutorials

30 Mar

This week I’m going to turn the focus to landscape photography. Your photography challenge this week being “Flora” it’s a good time to get out and there go find some great landscapes. So I’ve actually found not one, but three, short video tutorials with some really good landscape photography tips.

#1 Top 10 pro landscape shooting tips

As the title eludes to, this video shares 10 quick tips to help you get going. At just over four minutes you don’t have to waste any time before you get out shooting. The tips include: focal point, tripod, time of day, rule of thirds and more.

#2 Low Light Landscape Photography Tips

This one is by Stuart Low Photography and he goes over some tips for shooting when the light maybe isn’t so great like a gray gloomy day, and how to create interesting compositions. Besides, I just love his accent!

#3 The Australian Photography Show Ep1 – Landscapes

Last but not least is a really good video by Zulu Media. They go on a location photo shoot with landscape photographer Adam Monk at the famous Australian landmark, The Pinnacles. You don’t have to live in Australia to be able to use his tips though, you can apply these to any location and use them immediately. Some really good stuff in here as the two photographers show different ways of approaching the same subject matter and talk about lenses, camera settings and composition for impact.

I hope you enjoy these landscape photography tips. If you want more you can check out the Best landscape articles of 2013 here on dPS, or Living Landscapes, one of our most popular eBooks!

2 Great Lighting Tutorials with Joe McNally

10 Mar

Joe McNally is a name you have likely heard before. He’s a National Geographic photographer and a master of lighting. He’s also seemingly fearless, or a little bit crazy – doing things like photographing from the very tip (and I do mean TIP as in climbed up tiny ladders on a harness tip) of the worlds tallest towers, and other hair raising stunts.

I’ve seen Joe teach live and he’s as entertaining as he is informative. If you ever have a chance to go to one of his seminars, do it! He’s engaging and you’ll go away having had a lot of fun and learning a ton. I promise.

For today’s video I have two lighting tutorials by Joe. The first is on comparing sizes of the light source and how it effects the final image. He goes from a regular on camera flash direct from camera, to off-camera, to adding diffusers and softboxes.  After each step he shows the resulting image. So if you are having a hard time grasping quality of light and how it is affected by the size of the light source – watch this, it should help.

Comparing sizes – small flash

So? Did you get some clarity from that? Hope so.

The second video has Joe deconstructing a recent shot he did, explaining how it achieved it using both the ambient light from the setting sun and flash.

Combining flash and ambient light at sunset

Want more on lighting and more from Joe – check out these books:

Want more on off-camera flash techniques:

  • Balancing Flash and Ambient Light Using an Incident Light Meter
  • Working with Off Camera Flash and TTL
