Macro Photography Tips – Video Tutorials

06 Apr

This time of year is a great time to get out and find some macro photography subjects. So I dug around and found a few videos to help get you started if you want to try it.

Macro Photography by Matt Granger

First up is a lesson by Matt Granger as he teaches Tina (a new photographer) how to do macro photography. Follow along with her and try it yourself as they go through using a long zoom lens, hand held, natural light, adding flash, and using a tripod.

Getting sharper images

The second video is from Alessandro Zocchi he gives you a few tips to help you get sharper macro images.

Focus stacking

Lastly Peter Bargh covers a more advanced technique, focus stacking, which involves taking multiple shots focused at different points, and merging them later.

You can find the software he mentioned here:

  • Combine ZM
  • Helicon Focus

You can also use Phototoshop if you have it. Read: How to Focus-Stack Macro Images using Photoshop for more on that technique.  Check It’s a Small World – the World of Macro Photography if you need some subject ideas.

Have fun!

3 Video Tutorials – How to Use On-Camera Flash

18 Jan

This week I have found some great videos to help you to understand how to use on-camera flash to your advantage. Flash can be confusing to understand and using on-camera flash incorrectly can make unflattering light, or worse yet ruin your photos completely. Have a watch of these tutorials on flash and see if you can pick up some helpful tips:

Video #1 Ed Vorosky – On-camera fill flash basics

Ed Vorosky covers some of the basics you will need to get a grasp on using flash on-camera. He goes over some of the settings to look for on your flash, different lighting situations, and which camera shooting mode to use. There’s a helpful demonstration of using Flash Exposure Compensation and how it affects your photo as well.

Video #2 Tony Northrup – Bounce Flash Basics

In this second video tutorial Tony Northrup goes into a little more detail using on-camera flash indoors and bouncing it for various different looks. He shows the results using just ambient light, flash straight on, and bounced off both the ceiling and side walls. You can see how just a small adjustment with your flash can completely change the look of your image or portrait.

Video #3 Mark Wallace – On-camera flash basics

In this last video Mark Wallace covers some of the basic flash settings for both Canon and Nikon flashes, then he goes outside to demonstrate how to control the exposure on the background (ambient) using both systems. Then he goes back indoors and shows several options for using the flash on-camera in that environment including bounce flash techniques.

Do you have any anxiety around using flash? Or are you a pro? Share any questions and comments you have below.

2 Night Photography Video Tutorials

26 May
David Kingham

David Kingham

This week’s collection of amazing images I shared a bunch of night photography, specifically those of the night starry sky, and hopefully you’re already thinking about how to shoot for this week’s photography challenge starry night photography.

So I went and found a couple of video tutorials to help you out on this mission.

First, this one by Adorama TV hosted by Mark Wallace. He walks through all the equipment he’s using, camera settings and it even includes a background serenade by some local coyotes.

In this second video host Jim Harmer shows you how to photograph the starry night sky and the Milky Way including a little tip about how to get foreground objects sharp in your final image.

I hope you enjoyed those. Please remember to hop over to the weekly challenge and show us your night photos there!

dPS is 8 Years Old [And Here are Our Most Popular Tutorials Ever]

24 May

Last month dPS passed it’s 8th birthday. While we usually have a little celebration at dPS HQ on such milestones we were so busy that week that not a single one of us noticed!

So today I took a few minutes to reflect on the journey since our first post on 17 April 2006 – and what a ride it has been.

When I hit publish on that first post I did so in the hope of helping a few of my family and friends improve their photography by writing down the tips that I found myself regularly telling them about how to use their cameras better.

I had no idea that 8 years later the site would have published over 4500 tutorials, 19 photography eBooks, have a staff of writers, editors, designers, developers, producers, customer support and marketers running it and would have been visited by over 275 million people!

Thanks so much to our wonderful community for sticking with us for another year here at dPS and a huge thanks to the dPS team for all your hard work!

This past year we’ve seen a complete overhaul of our design and the addition to our team on numerous fronts. We hope you continue to enjoy what we do and are excited about the year ahead – we have some special stuff planned!

While we’re in a mood to reminisce I thought I’d take a look back at the most tutorials we’ve published and I’ve compiled a list of our most popular 15 tutorials for those of you who might have joined us recently (or for those who want to look back).

Many of these are from the early days but are still very relevant for today. Each tutorial has been read by over 1,000,000 readers (and up to 4,000,000).

Enjoy!
