JVC Kenwood joins Micro Four Thirds with 4K Super 35 prototypes

08 Apr

Update: Consumer electronics maker JVC Kenwood has joined the Micro Four Thirds standard and said it will develop products for the system. The company is showing two prototype 4K-capable cameras, including a compact, handheld model at NAB in Las Vegas. We stopped by the JVC Kenwood booth and got a first glimpse of the cameras on display. Interestingly, the company says both cameras will have Super 35 sensors (around 21 x 12mm), which is wider than the original Four Thirds sensor format which the standard was designed around. Learn more

Super zoom? Olympus Stylus 1 First Impressions Review

29 Oct

stylus1-editorial.jpg

Up until recently, the only ‘real’ premium superzoom camera was the Panasonic DMC-FZ200. Two weeks ago Sony made a big splash with their pricey Cyber-shot RX10, which features a 1″-type sensor. The Olympus Stylus 1 slots in nicely somewhere between the two, offering a 1/1.7″-type sensor and constant F2.8, 28-300mm equivalent lens in an OM-D-style body. If that sounds appealing, then follow the link to read our First Impressions Review of the Stylus 1.

Photo Magnetism: Super Simple Photo Magnets

04 Oct

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

Simple is the name of the game with these photo magnets.

Using only a few ingredients you can turn small photos into awesome pieces of refrigerator art.

They are fun to make, easy on the brain and cute as all get out. Once you make the first one you’ll want to start an assembly line of relaxation. A very productive assembly line of relaxation.

Simple, short and sweet. Score!

Make Super Simple Photo Magnets

Why It’s Cool

Sometimes it’s nice to have a project to do that doesn’t take much set up or clean up… AND that makes a super cute finished product!

These photo magnets fit the easy bill and dazzle like special little gems showcasing your memories.

Ingredients:

  • Photos
  • Scissors
  • A Quarter
  • A Pen
  • Glue that will adhere to glass and metal (we used “Liquid Fusion”)
  • Small circular magnets (.75 inch in size)
  • Clear glass circles – they look like large squished down marbles and are usually labelled “decorative fillers” at the craft store

STEP 1: Ring Around the George Washington

before

Use a quarter to trace a circle around the part of your photo that you want to turn into a magnet.

STEP 2: Cut a circle

before

Cut out the circle you just traced.

Make sure you cut off the pen marks because those will be magnified if ya don’t get rid of them.

STEP 3: A light layer of glue

before

Place glue on the flat side of a glass circle.

Get a nice thin even layer on the entire back of the circle. A little goes a long way.

STEP 4: Make it permanent

before

Place your circular photo face down in the glue.

Hold the image down in the glue for 30 seconds to make sure the photo doesn’t drift around.

STEP 5: Glue the magnet

before

Place a light layer of glue on one side of the magnet.

Adhere the magnet to the back of the the photo you just glued down.

Let the glue dry for a couple of hours, and you’re all set (cuz so is the glue)!

Taking It Further

  • Place a set of the photo magnets in a mint tin for a sweet and simple little photo gift.
  • Words and phrases look cool under the glass circles…take photos of text you’d like to have magnified up on your fridge.
  • Cut all of your circles from the same photo. When they’re on the fridge they’ll be a tiny photo puzzle.

When it comes down to it, there aren't a ton of things that can go wrong with a speedlight. And if your flash appears to be in working order (i.e., charges, zooms, etc.) but won't fire, it is probably a bad or broken tube.

While you are probably looking at a three-digit repair bill from your OEM manufacturer, you can also DIY the repair for next to nothing.

Filmmaker’s lens: Super Takumar 50mm on Canon DSLR

16 Feb

www.videotestground.com This video examines the great Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 lens, focusing on how to use this lens for video on Canon DSLRs. I discuss some of the properties of the Super Takumar and the ways to mount the lens to a Canon DSLR such as 7D, 60D or t3i 600D. I also talk about mounting filters to the lens using the step up ring adapter. Super Tak is an exceptional, fast, inexpensive filmmaking lens which has been successfully used on a number of DSLR productions. Due to its low cost, the Super Tak has become a popular lens in many Canon EOS DSLR shooters’ kits. The lens excels at creating pleasing shallow depth of field, with characteristic bokeh effect. Super Tak is an excellent portrait lens, especially on 1.6x crop factor cameras such as 60D or t3i. Given the crop factor, the lens behaves like an 80mm (equivalent on 35mm camera), which looks amazing on close-ups of people. Super Tak is a very fast lens, exceptionally suited to low-light work. The lens opens to F1.4, while remaining amazingly sharp. I’ve compared the Super Takumar with Canon 50mm EF 1.8 lens, and the Super Tak wins hands down. The build quality of the Super Tak is ‘old-school’ solid, compared to Canon’s flimsy lens. I love the feel of Super Takumar’s focusing ring. I also love to have the f-stop ring on the lens. I do a bit of macro work with the Super Tak (with extension tubes), and the beauty of the all-manual lens is that I can control the aperture on the lens (I can’t control it

Pentax 105mm f/2.8 Super Takumar | Lens Review

07 Feb

This is a test of my Pentax 105 2.8 adapted onto my 550D (T2i). Clips are completely unedited and are all shot on the standard color profile. I acquired this lens, along with a 50/1.4 Asahi Takumar, a couple weeks ago. Generally, I have been pleased with this lens. I prefer using this for photos over video. My main gripe is the long minimum focusing distance, which is 4ft. I find it annoying because I often find myself too close to the subject and have to take steps back to get my subject in focus. Definitely not for macro work. The lens is pretty sharp at all apertures. It seems to be optimum around f/5.6. I like the bokeh; it has the look of more expensive lenses. Thanks for watching, please let me know how I can improve and what lenses you’d like to see next. Song: soundcloud.com The T2i produces the same video as the T3i. (and similar video and FOV with this lens on the 7D, Ti1, 50D, 60D, and various Nikons and other cameras with 1.5x & 1.6x crop factors.)
