Grime in 1:20 Scale: Gritty Dollhouse-Sized Urban Architectural Models

The kind of graffiti-covered, poster-plastered, weathered and visibly aging architecture that once characterized many big cities and has now largely been demolished is recreated in miniature by artist Joshua Smith. Every aspect of Smith’s tiny urban environments is crafted in loving detail, with absolutely nothing overlooked. Photographs of each miniature will make you wish you could examine them in person with a magnifying glass, appreciating the realism in every sidewalk crack, weed, pebble and fallen leaf.

A dumpster at the Oakland Docks is packed full of tiny trash, some strewn around its base, a plastic bag fluttering on the barbed wire fence behind it. Melbourne’s Liberated X Bookshop and Shoe repairs features some fantastic Bladerunner-inspired wheat pasting, peeling plywood and the world’s tiniest padlocks. Big Bang Fireworks Company, based on 15 Pell Street in New York City’s Chinatown looks like you could slide those windows open and find a tiny family dining inside.

Based in South Australia, Smith previously worked for sixteen years as a stencil artist, and has now shifted his focus to model-making. The artist recently granted an interview to ArchDaily about his modeling process.

“The longest build, which was my Kowloon Miniature, took three solid months working on average six to seven days a week and eight to sixteen hour-long days,” says Smith. “I strive to create a reality. I take as many reference photos as possible to mimic every single streak of rust, grime and chipping of stonework. I want viewers to be fooled, if I are a photo of the completed work in sunlight, to think it is the real thing.”

Brutal East: New Scale Models of Brutalist Architecture Made of Paper

The kit is appealingly packaged and beautifully detailed, each building bearing its tiny satellite TV dishes, stains, graffiti and weathering. It’s a neat way to hold on to divisive architecture that may soon be lost to history. While many people think these structures are ugly and depressing, they’re undeniably memorable.

‘Brutal East’ is just the latest kit of paper Brutalist models from Zupagrafika; the design studio previously released a set of Modernist Architectural Matryoshka it calls ‘Blokoshka’ as well as sets from London, Paris, Katowice and Warsaw. They also offer tiny paper models of Polish street icons like advertising columns, ticket validators and 1980s cars. All kits are available in the studio’s online shop.

Apple selling more Plus models than ever

Apple’s financial results, which will be released tomorrow, show that in Q4 2016 Apple has sold more iPhone 7 Plus units than any of the preceding Plus models in previous years. The Plus model has a larger screen, more RAM and a bigger battery than its standard counterpart but we’d suspect the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera with its 2x optical zoom factor and portrait mode has a lot to do with consumers increasingly opting for the more expensive iPhone variant. Overall 24 million iPhone 7 Plus units have been sold which is a 55% increase compared to the 15.5 million iPhone 6s Plus in Q4 2016. This represents 40% of all iPhone 7 sales.

This is also the first time that users in China bought more Plus devices than standard iPhones. 52% of iPhone buyers opted for the dual-camera model. With the previous iPhone 6s generation only 40% decided to go with the larger version.

Despite good news for the iPhone 7 Plus, overall the iPhone has been struggling in the fourth quarter of 2016. According to analysts Cowen & Co, the Apple results show that consumers are less willing to upgrade their device than before and rumors about a 10 year anniversary iPhone model in 2017 made some users skip the 2016 model. Like all mobile manufacturers, Apple is under constant pressure to innovate. At least in terms of imaging the 7 Plus dual-cam looked like a step into the right directions. Let’s hope Apple can follow up on it 2017.

Urban Camouflage: Nude Body-Painted Models Blend Into Built Environments

Nude human bodies seem to melt into their surroundings, expertly hand-painted to match their environments in an artistic form of urban camouflage. Artist Trina Merry dodges traffic, police, pedestrians and inclement weather to capture photographs of her subjects against such backdrops as the Florence skyline, the Washington Monument, the Brooklyn Bridge and Westminster Abbey.

Typically working guerrilla-style without the permission of authorities in most cases, Merry selects locations that can make a big visual impact and then paints her models in place. Getting all those angles right is no small challenge – the human body is three-dimensional, after all, and nobody can stand perfectly still for very long. But somehow, it all comes together in the final images of Merry’s work.

For her latest series, ‘Sweet Land of Liberty,’ Merry poses subjects in front of iconic patriotic landmarks like the White House and the Lincoln Memorial, asking her audience to think about what we have to be grateful for. Previous projects have been set in cities around the world, along with natural cliffs and meadows of Ireland and studio shoots. Many scenes are made even more complicated by the use of several models, contorted to create specific shapes. Some incorporate larger objects, like entire cars, as in a commission for Ford.

“Body paint is an ancient art form and the use of ochre on the skin dates back 425,000 years and has a deeper part in all of our cultures than people tend to realize,” says Merry. “Painting on the body is a distinctly human experience; it creates a special connection to a person that other visual art forms have trouble accomplishing. This work has a heartbeat and a breath – it is dynamically alive. The ephemeral nature of body paint forces focus and reflects on the reality of existence, which is an incredible thought that I find myself reflecting on frequently while working.”

Scan to CAD: Software Turns Volumetric Snapshots into Usable 3D Models

Bringing a critical gap between 3D scanning technology and functional outputs for architects, designers and homeowners, Canvas can scan a room in minutes then generate useful CAD software files.

Raw scans of spaces can be helpful in terms of generating rough measurements and usable as a baseline for a more rigorous three-dimensional model, but it takes time and energy to translate between the two. So while they are great for point-to-point measurements and as-built drawings, such scans are limited in terms of letting someone rework or envision changes to a structure.

Occipital, the startup behind Structure Sensor, wants to make that transition smooth, painless and effectively automatic. After a users scans a room (or a whole house) with their iPad, they can send away for CAD files that will be returned in two business days. They can then plug those files into software of choice, like Sketchup, and begin remodeling their space.

The company calls their vision “augmented home” and pictures their software and hardware getting increasingly refined over time to the point where on-the-spot shots can be immediately transformed into precise and full-color 3D files.

“I think we’ll probably look back at today as a time, just like the 1830s, when we just started to have photographs,” says Adam Rodnitzky, the company’s VP of marketing. “We’re now entering the era when we’re going to start having a 3D record of the world around us.”

Small in Japan: Tokyo’s Unique Museum of Miniature Architectural Models

The first of its kind, this Japanese museum focuses exclusively on showcasing architectural models through rotating displays of miniatures, treating these crafted works as their own subset of art. The Archi-Depot in Tokyo is a huge warehouse space with 17-foot ceilings and a dazzling array of models from everyday architects as well as famous designers alike.

Each model comes with a QR code that provides information about the work, including blueprints, renderings and photographs of finished works as well as details about the architects.

Special lighting and climate control features help preserve and protect the models, just like art in an ordinary museum. The institution is as much oriented toward maintaining these works as it is toward displaying them.

These miniature buildings can be fantastic in their details and visual expression, but are often only seen behind closed doors in architecture firms. This museum takes these carefully-constructed works and puts them on public display.

Featured architects include Kengo Kuma, the designer selected to create the 2020 World Olympics Stadium, as well as Shigeru Ban, famous for his work with paper and cardboard.

Not all of the models represent buildings either under construction or already completed. Some feature conceptual pieces or draft works that for financial or other reasons will never be built. Shelf space is also rented out to architectural firms needing a place to store their models (and, of course, wanting to advertise their skills to a broader audience).

“Most architects have a store room full of lovely models that no one gets to see. But the situation is worse in offices in Japan, where space is really at a premium,” explained Klein Dytham co-founder Mark Dytham. “So this initiative is really brilliant – it’s a win-win for the architect and Archi-Depot. You rent a set of tall shelves, display your models on the lower shelves, and store the boxes and cases on the upper shelves. Hey presto, an instant architectural model museum with works by most of Japan’s leading architects.”

Canon updates Pixma printer line with more compact models

Canon has announced four new inkjet home printers that it claims are much better looking than its previous models, as well as 40% more compact. The new models are the Pixma TS5050, TS6050, TS8050 and TS9050, each of which offers both printing and scanning functions. Canon has enabled wireless printing on all four models allowing users to connect smartphones and tablets via the Canon PRINT app through Wi-Fi Direct and Access Point Mode. The two top models, the TS8050 and TS9050, allow NFC connection as well, while the TS9050 features an Ethernet port for networking the machine to multiple PCs.

The LCD screen of the printers differ between models with the TS5050 offering a 3in panel with no touch function. The TS6050 has the same size screen but with touch control, while the touch screen of the TS8050 measures 4.3in and that of the TS9050 measures 5in.

Printer resolution differs too, from 4800x1200dpi in the TS5050 and TS6050 to 9600x2400dpi in the TS8050 and TS9050. The lower end models use a five-ink ChromaLife 100 system while the higher end models use 6 inks.

Snapseed 2.9 for iOS adds Raw support for 144 camera models

The iOS version of Google’s Snapseed mobile photo editing app just got an update with a major new benefit: full Raw support for 144 cameras and all DNG files. With the update, the app can now be used to edit Raw files from a lengthy list of advanced compacts and interchangeable lens cameras.

A full list of cameras included in the update is available at Google’s Snapseed support website. The website also suggests supported workflows to get those Raw files onto your device, listing EyeFi MobiPro, Google Drive and Apple’s Lightning to SD card reader or USB camera adapter as possibilities. Realistically, a Raw editing workflow will probably make most sense with an iPad Pro.

Version 2.9 also introduces a face tool with various pre-set options to apply different smoothing and brightening effects to detected faces in a photo. Also added is an option to specify the JPEG compression rate applied when exporting photos, and the ability to save a lossless PNG.

Manfrotto launches new Digital Director models and updates app with extra features

Manfrotto has added depth of field preview, an intervalometer and time-lapse controls to the app that runs its Digital Director camera-remote-control and external monitor device. Version 2.1 of the app, that is now compatible with a wider range of iPad models, also brings auto playback so images can be displayed automatically after they are recorded, as well as exposure bracketing and a more precise focusing system. The new app makes it possible to download Raw images to transfer via Wi-Fi web server, e-mail and FTP, and users can now send processed and resized JPEG files directly to social media apps on the host iPad.

Version 2.1 also imports metadata into the desktop version Adobe Lightroom via a plug-in. While the device offers controls for shooting video content it still isn’t possible to play video back through the Digital Director or to download movie files to the iPad. The Digital Director is compatible with 14 Canon EOS cameras and 15 DSLRs from Nikon but the company says that the new depth of field preview function only works with Canon models.

Manfrotto has also released a rigid case for the Digital Director as well as a sun shield and a range of frame inserts that convert the physical structure of the device to accommodate the different form factors of a series of iPad models.

Santi Zoraidez is an art director and designer from Buenos Aires who does visual, graphic and architectural work, sometimes real and sometimes conceptual.

In this set of summer homes, he bends, twists, warps and cantilevers wood in amazing (if sometimes implausible) ways, putting houses on spindly stilts or hanging them from steep rocky surfaces.
