Nesting Architecture: Folding Models of Eastern Bloc Buildings

This series of recycled cardboard models references both the functional styles of postwar Soviet architecture as well as the Russian tradition of handcrafted nesting dolls.

In the wake of World War II, European cities were forced to rebuild in a hurry, focusing on cheap and efficient structures that could effectively be mass-produced. Blokoshka (from: Matryoshka and blocks) by Polish studio Zupagrafika borrows from the pragmatic minimalism of this architectural history.

The four units represent four types of building in four places:  the sleeping districts of Moscow, Plattenbau Constructions of East Berlin, ruin-topping estates of Warsaw of moscow, and Panelak blocks of Prague.

The prefabricated pieces are nestled in sheets of cardboard, ready to be folded into place without the need for glue, scissors or other tools. Each resulting structure tucks neatly into the next, so the sets can be deployed into districts or recombined into shelf-sitting modules.

Nikon extends service advisory for D750 to include more models

Nikon has announced that the shutter fault in its D750 that it acknowledged in July last year, may be found in cameras from a much wider manufacturing period. Initially it was thought that the issue, in which the shutter occasionally shades part of the image, occurred in cameras produced between October and November 2014. The company has now discovered the same problem in models made from December 2014 to June 2015.

Nikon has promised a free service for all models affected, and an online serial number checker is available for customers to determine whether theirs is one of the models that needs attention.

European customers can check their serial number on the Nikon Europe website, and those in the USA should go to the Nikon USA website. Other region service pages can be found on the Nikon Global website.

To users of the Nikon D750 digital SLR camera – possible image shading from shutter (update 29/02/2016)

Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photographic needs.

In July of 2015, we announced that the shutter in some Nikon D750 digital SLR cameras manufactured in October and November of 2014 does not function normally, sometimes resulting in shading of a portion of images. Since that time, our examination of the issue has clarified the fact that the same issue may occur with D750 cameras manufactured from December, 2014 through June, 2015.
Therefore, any D750 manufactured from October, 2014 through June, 2015 is eligible for inspection and repair of its shutter.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Identifying affected products
To check whether or not your camera is one of those affected by this issue, click Affected Product Serial Numbers below and enter your D750 serial number as instructed. Your camera’s serial number will be checked against those of applicable products. If your camera is one of those affected, instructions for requesting repairs will be displayed. If your camera is not affected by this issue, rest assured that repairs to your camera are not necessary and you may continue using your camera without concern for this issue.

Resolution
Please contact your nearest Nikon service center if you own a Nikon D750 digital SLR camera to which this issue applies. They will keep your camera, and examine and repair the camera’s shutter free of charge, even if the camera’s warranty has expired.

Buildings in Bottles: Crafty Test-Tube Architectural Models

A tiny twist on miniature architecture turns simply-crafted models into hovering micro-habitats, suspended in test tubes like the science experiment of some mad architect.

Micro Matter is an ongoing project series by Rosa de Jong, an artist and designer from Amsterdam who uses both manufactured materials (paper and cardboard) as well as natural ones (sticks and moss) to shape small worlds enclosed in glass.

The scenarios range from partial (the tops of skyscrapers poking above the clouds) to complete (homes resting on floating mountaintops), and vary in structural plausibility as well, bringing to mind less-controlled urban environments in places like Mexico, where ingenuity often trumps order.

Each creation also comes with a behind-the-scenes look at its construction, including both the materials employed and the tools used to cut the pieces apart and assemble them into new forms.

The results strike a balance between everyday believability – crooked walls and as-needed staircases – and utter fantasy, combining the rigor of a ship-in-a-bottle with the imagination of a science fiction artist.

Toshiba expands its Exceria Pro SD card line to include 64GB and 128GB models

Electronics giant Toshiba has announced higher capacity models of its high-speed Exceria Pro SD cards, increasing the maximum storage available to 128GB. The 16GB and 32GB Exceria Pro cards have existed for some time in European markets. Toshiba claims they achieve read speeds of 260MB/s and write speeds of 240MB/s, and the new 64GB card is said to follow suit. The highest capacity 128GB card offers a read speed of 260MB/s but a write speed of 150MB/s. Read more

First on the list: Dexter‘s sleek Miami loft full of whites, blacks and grays but largely devoid of color – a perfect home for a calculated killer trying to fit in yet finding it hard to show (or even have) emotion. You can even see his closet where he keeps, well, never you mind.

On a lighter note, this apartment was home to half the cast of Friends, Rachel and Monica mostly but with some rotation as well (no pun intended). Spin the model to see their bedrooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen and deck from different angles.

Tips For Working with Agency Models

Alana Tyler Slutsky is back on FashionPhotographyBlog.com, after sharing the steps to take when approaching a new modeling agency for the first time, to share some tips with our readers that are useful to remember when working with models from agencies in order to maintain a working relationship with both the models and the agencies they are from. A LOT of people have asked how to approach agencies to work with their models, so here are some tips for working with agency models.

 

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

 

 – DO NOT SHOOT NUDE/IMPLIED NUDE – nudity isn’t really necessary.  It won’t end up in the models book, it doesn’t look good on you, just don’t do it!  If you shoot nude, there is a very good chance that agency will not be sending you another model to test.  Remember – ** A lot of the girls you’ll be sent are young.  Shooting nude or dressing models in sheer clothing is risky business when you’re working with a 16 year old **

 

– THESE IMAGES ARE FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO – whatever you do DO NOT make the mistake of shooting client work with a model under the impression that this is a test shoot.  The agency will find out and they’ll send you a bill.

 

– DON’T BE A JERK! – I would hope no one is going to be a jerk anyways, but keep in mind that everyone on a test is donating their time.  Don’t be mean.  Models will review you to their agent. Keep that in mind when you have the urge to yell and make the model cry “to draw out the emotion.”

 

– KEEP THE IMAGE USABLE – by that I mean don’t go heavy on the makeup and keep the hair simple.  The more you do to the model, the less likely they’ll be able to use it in their book.  As pointed out before – agents love simple, natural, clean images of their models.  Leave the crazy stuff for editorials.  If you become that guy known for extreme makeup and hair, chances are you’re not going to be sent more models to work with.

 

The best advice I can give is to start with smaller agencies and work your way up, (that is what I did and I’m still in the process of doing).  Don’t know who to contact and who to hold off contacting?  Do some research! Models.com is a great resource that shows the top agencies for men and women.  They also have a directory of agencies which you can view by country/state/city.  I would advise to stay away from the top agencies until you’ve tested a bit, build up your confidence and know what you’re doing.

His latest series, dubbed Metros (opening at the Robert Fontaine Gallery), follows in the footsteps of Long Nights, Big City Lights, taking exotic and beautiful wood offcuts then chipping, chiseling,, cutting and sawing them into buildings and towers to form abstract skylines.

The results reflect a combination of architectural and artistic sensibilities, seeming much like pieces of furniture or sculpture but intentionally crafted without the same slow detail-oriented care we normally associate with those arts.

Seen at a distance, the structural details seem to blur into skylines – up close, like trees in a forest, individual buildings take shape, highlighting differences in form, color, grain and materiality.

From Abstract to Actual: Unrealistic Art Models Made Real

Some of the world’s greatest abstract artists have created portraits of humans that, while inspired by the human form, have completely dispensed with any actual human’s natural proportions.

Hungarian artist Flora Borsi decided to take some of those abstract paintings and digitally create what the models would look like if the paintings were realistic depictions of real humans.

The results are equal parts entertaining and disturbing. Elongated necks, exaggerated facial features, and impossible proportions make the subjects look vaguely human but not quite what we would expect from actual human models standing next to the portraits they inspired.

The paintings of Modigliani, Picasso, Malevich and more are given the unusual treatment of working backwards to create something new from an already-existing piece of art.

Entitled “The Real Life Models,” the project is one that takes you a bit by surprise. Seeing these human forms outside of their respective paintings only highlights how creative and liberal the artists were in painting the original pieces.

Borsi did include in her series one real historic photo of models next to the painting they inspired. The older couple who actually posed for Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” are pictured next to their own portrait, looking nearly as sullen as they do in the painting.

New firmware from Nikon, Olympus & Sigma for 1 Series, XZ-2 and DP models

Nikon, Olympus and Sigma have released firmware updates for the 1 System cameras, the Stylus XZ-2 and DP Merrill-series APS-C compact cameras. Nikon’s 1 System cameras have been updated to add support for the new 32mm F1.2 kens and continuous AF with the Nikon mount adapter FT1 and AF-S lenses, among other refinements. The Olympus Stylus XZ-2 has been updated for support with the new VF-4 electronic finder, and Sigma’s DP Merrill-series benefit from several performance and stability improvements.
