Detu launches F4 Plus professional grade 360-degree 8K VR cam

Chinese manufacturer Detu has launched the F4 Plus: a professional grade 8K panoramic VR camera that can capture 360° stills, videos and broadcast livestream footage at a whopping 8K resolution. In other words, at 7680 x 3840 pixels.

Image data is captured using four 200° fisheye lenses coupled to 12MP Sony IMX117 1/2.3″ CMOS sensors. For livestreaming, the camera be connected to a computer via Ethernet cable, and wireless livestreaming to YouTube, Facebook and other 360° enabled platforms is possible via 2.4G and 5G dual frequency Wi-Fi.

The images recorded by the individual cameras are stitched together in-camera and Detu says its optical flow algorithm is suitable for dynamic stitching in case you’re capturing scenes with a lot of motion.

The camera comes with a copper and aluminum frame and an air duct cooling system for efficient heat dissipation during livestreaming. The 4800mAh lithium-ion removable battery allows for up to 120 minutes of continuous shooting and a microSD slot supports cards up to a capacity of 128GB. Audio is recorded via two built-in microphones. Finally, the camera can be controlled, and footage edited and shared, via dedicated iOS and Android apps.

MeFOTO launches MeVIDEO brand with new GlobeTrotter travel video tripod

Manufacturer of colorful travel tripods MeFOTO is launching its first video tripod via a Kickstarter campaign, and there’s a new brand name to along with it. The MeVIDEO GlobeTrotter will be the first of this ‘new’ company’s tripods, and will feature a new leveling head design and a choice of aluminum or carbon fibre legs.

With a maximum payload of 8.8lbs/4kg, this travel tripod is aimed at the serious video market, including those using large DSLRs and lower end dedicated professional video cameras.

The MeVIDEO GlobeTrotter comes with an aluminum ball and socket-style leveling platform, and a head that offers a long panning handle. The handle can be switched for left or right-handed users, and the four-section legs spread to three positions as well as reverse folding for storage.

For low angled shooting, the center column can be split in two so the shoulders can be dropped close to the ground, and the top half of the column can be attached to one of the tripod legs to create a monopod. MeVIDEO also allows the head to be completely removed from the shoulders and leveling platform, so it can be used on other accessories such as a slider or crane.

The GlobeTrotter will have a maximum height of 65.7in/166.8cm and packs away to 21.9in/55.7cm. It will weigh 6.06lb/2.75kg in carbon fibre and 6.64lb/3.01kg in aluminum.

Users will have a choice of black or ‘titanium’ finishes, both of which are expected to cost $ 500 for the aluminum version, and $ 700 for the carbon fibre version although there are, of course, special deals for those pledging support for the campaign at an early stage. The company expects to ship in January 2018.

Casio launches intense-looking GZE-1 action cam that’s waterproof to 50 meters

Casio just announced an action camera that it claims is drop-, water- and freeze-proof, and comes with a 13mm f/2.8 equivalent lens. It’s called the GZE-1, and it’s the first of a new line of Gz EYE models that are aimed at extreme sports enthusiasts.

The camera is said to use G-Shock technology borrowed from the Casio’s sports watch brand, and can be controlled either by a Casio Pro Trek watch, a smart phone or the dedicated (and optional) remote controllers, one of which has a LCD screen that allows users to see the action live. The camera itself doesn’t have a viewing screen.

Despite having a 21.14-million-pixel 1/2.3-type backlit CMOS sensor, the GZE-1 turns out only 6.9MP still images and FullHD video. It can, however, record frame rates of up to 240fps, and allows users to vary the frame rate during a clip to mix slow-motion with normal motion in the same sequence. This allows action moments to be shown in slow-motion without users having to record the whole sequence at a high frame rate, or having to combined multiple clips of different speeds in post-processing.

Three-axis electronic image stabilization helps to keep movie footage smooth (though it does nothing for stills) and over-sized buttons make the camera easy to control with gloves on. A resin body coating and a urethane bumper helps the camera withstand drops from 4 meters, high pressure blasts from waves, and water in general to depths of up to 50 meters. The body is also IP 6X dust-proof and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C.

No price has been released yet but the Casio GZE-1 is due to go on sale at the end of the month in Japan… we’re still waiting to see if it becomes available elsewhere in the world.

DJI launches Zenmuse X7 Super 35mm camera module with Raw video capture

DJI has launched the Zenmuse X7, a Raw video capable Super 35 camera module. The camera/gimbal system which mounts to the company’s drones features a new, proprietary lens mount.

The camera can shoot 6K CinemaDNG Raw or 5.2K Apple ProRes footage at up to 30p or 3.9K CinemaDNG and 2.7K ProRes at up to 59.94p. The company claims 14 stops of dynamic range but, like all video manufacturers, doesn’t specify how this is assessed.

It uses the new “DJI Cinema Color System” based around a D-Log Curve and D-Gamut RGB color space.

The camera includes two exposure modes, one that varies amplification gain and an “EI” mode that always uses minimal amplification (~base ISO) with metadata tags to denote the intended final brightness, to preserve DR. This is increasingly common practice in the video sphere but has yet to make its way across to stills photography.

The previous model (the Zenmuse X5) was based around a Micro Four Thirds mount and came with a distinctly Panasonic-like 15mm F1.7 lens. Instead the Zenmuse X7 is based around the company’s own ‘DL’ mount.

Alongside the camera, the company is releasing 16mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm F2.8 lenses, the longest three of which will include mechanical shutters. The carbon fiber bodied lenses will cost $ 1,299 each, with the exception of the 50mm, which is $ 100 cheaper, though a camera bundled with all four lenses will cost just $ 4,299.

The camera on its own will cost around $ 2699 and will be available from November.

To meet the rigorous requirements of filmmakers and television production professionals, the Zenmuse X7 captures the highest image resolutions ever for an integrated drone camera. Enhanced Imaging Potential

The Zenmuse X7 uses a dedicated aerial mount system, the DJI DL-Mount, featuring an ultra-short flange focal distance to carry prime lenses optimally. Available with focal lengths of 16 mm, 24 mm, 35 mm, and 50 mm, each lens has a maximum aperture of F/2.8 and is crafted out of carbon fiber, making them durable and lightweight for high-performance aerial cinematography with the DJI Inspire 2 drone.

To allow for advanced setting adjustment and fine-tuning, the 16mm lens is equipped with a built-in ND 4 filter, and the 24 mm, 35 mm, and 50 mm lenses feature a mechanical shutter.

Higher Flexibility in Post-Production

DJI has also introduced a new DJI Cinema Color System (DCCS) making the Zenmuse X7 an asset on every film set for movies, TV series, commercials, documentaries, and more.

DCCS features a new D-Log Curve and D-Gamut RGB color space to give more flexibility and color options during the post-production process. The D-Log further extends the dynamic range, while the D-Gamut RGB color space preserves more color information to support the most demanding filmmaking scenarios, providing accurate color for quick and easy post-processing.

The new EI Mode mimics the way a film camera works to help cinematographers capture as much information as possible in every scene while balancing the dynamic range and noise with different log curves for more flexibility during the post-production process.

Yashica launches Y35 digiFilm camera that uses digital ‘film’ cartriges

After a number of teasers over the past few weeks, Yashica has finally launched its ‘unprecedented camera’ on Kickstarter: meet the Y35 digiFilm camera. The description page does not offer an awful lot of technical detail, but it looks like the Y35 is relatively simple digital camera in a retro-style body that comes with a unique feature: interchangeable digital ‘film’ cartridges that Yashica calls digiFilm.

The camera doesn’t actually save any images on the digiFilm (it has an SD-card slot for that) but instead ISO, color and digital filter settings are controlled by inserting a digiFilm cartridges. How’s that for a gimmick?

To start with, Y35 users will be able to choose from an ISO1600 High Speed digiFilm for grainy images and shooting fast moving subjects, an ISO 400 Black & White digiFilm, an ISO 200 Ultra Fine digiFilm, and a ISO 200 “6 x 6” cartridge that makes the camera capture square images.

Given most settings are adjusted by inserting a digiFilm cartridge, the camera body itself doesn’t offer a great deal of control. There’s only a “winder” to set the camera up for the next capture, and a shutter speed dial. The rest of the specifications are in line with quite basic digital cameras: images are captured on a 1/3.2-inch 14MP sensor and the lens comes with a 35mm equivalent focal length and F2.8 aperture.

You can reserve an early bird Yashica Y35 digiFilm special for $ 124 on the Kickstarter page. This will get you the Yashica Y35 camera and the ISO 200 Ultra Fine digiFilm, plus a Yashica digiFilm post card. The package for $ 142 includes an additional digiFilm of your choice. Delivery is planned for April 2018, assuming the camera gets funded.

SanDisk launches ultra-reliable industrial memory cards that can handle extreme temperatures

Western Digital is working on a line of ultra-reliable, ultra-tough SanDIsk memory cards meant for automotive and industrial applications. There will be an automotive SD card for use in vehicles and drones, and three industrial cards in SD, microSD and XI formats, all of which are designed to withstand extreme temperature ranges and provide even better reliability than the manufacturer’s standard cards.

It’s safe to say you’ll have to encounter some pretty extreme climatic conditions to bring these cards to their metaphorical knees. The Industrial SD and microSD cards can be used in temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F, while the Industrial XI and Automotive SD cards can take temperatures between -40°F and 185°F.

At 80MB/s and 50MB/s, the cards also offer decent read/write speeds and come with a Status Monitor tool and a number of data protection features. According to a report on AnandTech, samples of the cards are in the process of being distributed to manufacturers. We’re just hoping the cards will also be available through retail channels at some point in the nearer future… photographers operating in extreme conditions would definitely appreciate this extra layer of reliability.

Aputure launches 2K watt Light Storm 300D LED light, its brightest light yet

Aputure has launched the Light Storm 300D, a 4.6lbs / 2.1kg LED light measuring 13.5in / 34.29cm long with up to 142,000 lux and an output equivalent to a 2,000 watts tungsten. The light can be powered with batteries or through AC power, and can be wirelessly controlled from distances up to 150m / 492ft. Control is also possible through what Aputure calls an intuitive control box.

The light’s low temperature coupled with its Bowens mount enables users to attach nearly any Bowens mount accessory (if you can find them…), according to Aputure. Additionally, an integrated ultra-silent fan works alongside internal thermometers to intelligently adjust its speed based on the light’s temperature.

Color accuracy is exceptional with a CRI rating of ?95 and TCLI rating of ?96 alongside a 5500K±200K color temperature.

The Light Storm 300D is currently listed on Amazon with an in-stock date of November 15th and a $ 1,100 USD price tag.

iZugar launches 220-degree super fisheye lens for Micro Four Thirds

Hong Kong-based company iZugar has just launched a pretty quirky, intense little lens.Called the MKX22, it’s a 3.25mm F2.5 super fisheye lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras that offers a whopping 220-degree angle of view.

This fisheye lens is said to offer “edge-to-edge sharpness” with suitability for 4K video recording, a 0.6m minimum focusing distance, fully circular 10mm design, and extra-slim build for better parallax control, according to iZugar. All of that in addition to that 220-degree angle of view that can more-or-less see behind itself.

The lens recently appeared for sale on iZugar’s website, where the company explains that the MKX22 can be used with the ZCam E1 – iZugar Custom Edition, Blackmagic Micro Studio 4K, Sony A7R2, Panasonic GX80, and similar cameras. For reference, the company offers a full reference guide showing FOV for these cameras at various resolutions.

The lens is available from iZugar now for $ 500.

Synology launches its first 6-bay NAS tower, updates more affordable options

Storage solution company Synology has introduced its first six-bay NAS device: the DS3018xs. The new model holds six drives of its own, but if that’s still not enough storage for your epic photo library, it can combine with the company’s DX1215 expansion units to control up to thirty.

The company has used the Pentium D1208 dual-core 2.2GHz processor that can boost to 2.6GHz, and provides a PCle slot for users to install an optional dual M.2 SATA SSD adapter to shift processing onto solid state drives for speed and efficiency. The DS3018xs comes with 8GB of RAM installed, but has two memory slots for expansion up to 32GB, and an optional 10GbE network card can provide 2230MB/s sequential read speeds.

At the same time, Synology has launched four other DS and DS+ models that replace existing NAS enclosures. The new DS918+ and DS718+ are upgrades of the DS..16+ models, and bring more memory capacity and options for adding extra slots via DX517 expansion unit. These models and the DS218+ and DS418 get new processors as well, while all are said to be capable of transcoding 4K video on the go.

Diversify Photo launches database of photographers of color to promote diversity

Diversify Photo wants to promote greater ethnic inclusion in the world of photography, and they’re taking concrete steps. Step one: Diversify has just established a database of ‘photographers of color’ that will make it easier for art buyers, creative directors and editors to find photographers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to hire.

The point of the database, says Diversify Photo, is to, “break with the narrow lens through which history… has been recorded” by equipping those who commission photography with “the resources to discover photographers of color available for assignments.”

The groups says that calling for greater diversity in the media has proved not to be enough, so it took action by creating this online database. The website features a gallery of images taken by individual photographers, and clicking on any of those pictures takes users to the photographer’s website. The site also offers an email service that explains the self-identified ethnicity of its photographers, along with their areas of expertise and languages spoken.

The site was set up by Brent Lewis, a senior editor at ESPN’s The Undefeated, and independent photo editor Andrea Wise. In an interview Brent told Photo District News that the database was created to show photography buyers, “that there are a lot of talented people out there that they may not see, have the time to go looking for, or just don’t know where to begin to find.”
