LG launches V30 with super-wide-angle and advanced video features

31 Aug

LG has launched its V30 flagship phone at IFA in Berlin and like its predecessors in the V-series the V30 puts a lot of emphasis on camera and video features and performance. LG goes as far as to promise a “whole-new video experience”.

Like on most recent LG models, the V30 dual-camera combines a main camera with a 71 degrees angle of view with a secondary 120 degree super-wide angle. On the main camera a Sony IMX 351 1/3.1 sensor is coupled with a very fast F1.6 lens.

One of the six lens elements is made from glass rather than plastic which, according to LG, results in a 4% increase in light transmission and consequently better low light performance. The company also claims an increase in dynamic range which is mainly achieved in the shadow areas.

The super-wide-angle comes with a smaller Samsung sensor that features a 13MP resolution and 1.0um pixel size. There is an F1.9 aperture but no OIS which is easier to live without on a super-wide-angle.

Manual mode offers a full range of manual controls including shutter speeds up to 30 seconds but it is its video mode features where the V30 really stands apart. There is manual control over video shutter speed and sound recording levels among many other parameters.

You can also choose from 15 new Cine Effect color presets that are based on film genres, such as ‘romantic’ or ‘film noir’ to give your footage a certain look and the Point Zoom mode allows for stable zooming into a target in the frame rather than the center. The feature also comes with controllable zoom speed and looked quite impressive in a demo we were given at a launch event at IFA. In addition LG says color grading based on LG Cine-Log results in expanded dynamic range and a wider color gamut.

Sound recording is performed by two high-preformance mics that offer 24-bit high-definition audio with a high dynamic range and very little distortion. According to the LG engineers LG says this results in much improved sound recording in very loud environments.

Images and videos can be viewed on a 6″ QHD+ OLED FullVision display with a 18:9 aspect ratio that occupies almost the entire front of the device. HDR10 is supported as well. With the Snapdragon 835 the V30 offers Qualcomm’s latest top-end chipset and all components are wrapped up in Gorilla Glass 5-covered metal body that is sealed against dust and water.

We have our hands on a test unit and it’s fair to say the V30 comes with a very attractive industrial design and reassuring build quality. Despite its 6″ display the overall dimensions feel surprisingly compact, thanks to the FullVision design. We are planning to get our full review started as soon as possible.

Key specifications:

  • Dual-camera with 70 degree main camera and 120 degree super wide angle
  • Main camera: 16MP 1/3.1″ Sony IMX351 CMOS sensor, F1.6 aperture, OIS
  • Super-wide-angle: 13MP Samsung sensor with 1.0um pixel size, F1.9 aperture
  • 4K video
  • 5MP F2.2 front camera
  • 6″ QHD+ OLED FullVision display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset
  • 64/128GB storage, 4GB RAM

Canon launches EOS M100 with 24MP sensor and Dual Pixel AF

29 Aug

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2588720882″,”galleryId”:”2588720882″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Canon has announced the successor to its EOS M10 with the EOS M100, bringing a 24.2MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus to the entry-level mirrorless range for the first time. A DIGIC 7 processor brings other improvements like a boost from 1080/30p to 1080/60p video capture and 4 fps burst shooting with continuous AF (6 fps with single AF) compared to the M10’s 2.2 fps with C-AF.

The Canon EOS M100 maintains its predecessor’s built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, tilting 3″ 1.03M-dot touchscreen, and pop-up flash. Bluetooth connectivity is also available, allowing for a constant connection between camera and mobile device. Canon says it’s the slimmest and lightest of its M-series offerings yet, and touts a newly designed touch interface for its beginner-friendly Creative Assist mode.

The Canon M100 will be available in black or white, and is expected to ship in October for $ 600 with 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, or $ 950 with 15-45mm and 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM.

STEP UP AND EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY STEP UP AND EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY WITH THE COMPACT YET POWERFUL NEW CANON EOS M100 CAMERA

Compact, Stylish and Packed with Canon technology, the EOS M100 is the Newest Interchangeable-Lens Camera Option for Users Ready to Take their Photography to the Next Level

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 29, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the successor to the EOS M10 interchangeable lens camera: the compact and stylish EOS M100. An easy-to-use yet powerful camera, the EOS M100 is an excellent choice for those looking to step up from smartphone photography, offering the versatility of interchangeable lenses, optical zoom and the latest imaging technology, without sacrificing size, style or the ability to share instantly.

“We are living in a moment where more images are being taken and shared than any other time in history. In an increasingly visual world, high-quality images are the ones that truly stand out from the crowd,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “The new Canon EOS M100 can be the ideal camera for those eager to step up their images and share their creative vision without sacrificing image quality or on-the-go performance.”

Discover a World That Cannot Be Captured with Smartphone Photography
Canon’s newest EOS M-Series offering helps expand creativity while providing the ability to capture photos that simply cannot be matched by smartphone photography. The EOS M100 camera is boosted by a powerful 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the Canon DIGIC 7 processor. These attributes, alongside Canon lenses, are capable of rendering incredible details even when zoomed in on distant subjects or shooting in low-light scenarios, such as a dark restaurant. Packed with high-end features like Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which enables high-speed focusing for capturing fleeting moments nearly across the entire frame, and video mode, novice and enthusiast photographers alike will appreciate the tremendous capabilities of the new EOS M100 camera.

For those eager to share family photos, epic adventures or culinary creations with their friends and family, the EOS M100 camera is also Wi-Fi®*, Near Field Communication (NFC)** and Bluetooth*** connected, allowing for live-view remote shooting and the viewing and transferring of images to a compatible smart device, via the Canon Camera Connect app††. High-quality images and video can be uploaded to a compatible device for easy sharing to select social media networks. Once connected through Bluetooth, the EOS M100 camera can also work with a compatible smartphone’s GPS function to provide a geo-tagged log of where every photo was taken on one’s journey.

The EOS M100 camera features a revamped and simple touch user interface that makes it easy for users to change settings, adjust modes and even focus on their subject. The 3.0-inch LCD touch-panel display also offers tilt functionality, helpful when shooting subjects from creative angles. Users can also use touch focus and Dual Pixel CMOS AF to smoothly transition focus between subjects with the touch of a finger.

Users will also discover a newly designed and intuitive touch interface that makes it easy to choose settings and focus shots, while beginners can learn and improve on their photography using Canon’s Creative Assist function, an intuitive setting that allows users to execute their creative vision, even without an “expert level” of camera knowledge. To make a scene brighter or blur backgrounds, users simply select their desired change within the Creative Assist menu, and the camera will automatically make corresponding setting adjustments, available immediately in live view. Preferred settings can be saved for next time, while those using the mode will begin to learn more advanced camera techniques to further pursue their creative vision—beyond just Auto Mode.

Sized to be an on-the-go camera, the EOS M100 is slimmer and lighter than other M-Series offerings, and fits neatly into a bag with ease. The new sleek and refined design features two body color options—white or black.

The use of interchangeable lenses is a differentiator factor of the Canon EOS M-Series from most smartphone photography, with Canon offering seven distinct and lightweight EF-M lenses, spanning wide-angle, telephoto and macro applications. EOS M100 users can find a lens for nearly any application while maintaining a compact system ready for on-the-go moments. For those with Canon’s EF lenses, the EF-EOS M Mount Adapter (sold separately) will allow for the use of Canon’s complete lineup of EF and EF-S lenses. Exploring close-up macro photography is also possible using the EOS M100, combined with a macro lens option—great for wildlife or detailed food photos.

Expand Your Horizons with Useful Functions
The EOS M100 camera sports a host of useful functions for users of any level—whether a true beginner in the world of photography or someone who simply wants to take their images or video to the next level. These functions include:

  • Video Mode: Record Full HD 1080/60p video or picturesque time-lapse movies with the push of a button or use Hybrid Auto to pull still frames form HD video recording

Edelkrone launches SurfaceONE 2-axis smart motion control system

11 Aug

Edelkrone has launched the SurfaceONE 2-axis motion control system which, according to its branding, is “the world’s smartest 2-axis motion control system.” The system is designed to capture straight, curved (targeted) and panning shots, all of which can be combined with a timelapse mode for smooth motion sequences.

The SurfaceONE is controlled through an Android or iOS app, and Apple Watch support will be available soon as well. Subjects can be targeted independent of distance and the system can be used as an endless slider or for automatic pans with angular speed adjustment.

When shooting timelapses with the SurfaceONE, speed, shooting interval and other parameters can be set in the app. Once set up, your camera is supported by a flexible tilting head, which allows for easy fine-tuning of the lens angle and keeps the rig stable. Edelkrone also says the SurfaceONE motor is very silent and should therefore not be audible in video clips.

More information is available on the Edelkrone website, where you can order the SurfaceONE for $ 690.

03 Aug

Miggo, the smartphone and photography accessory makers who brought us the Pictar iPhone camera grip among other innovative products, have returned to crowdfund the launch of a new Agua line of waterproof bags designed for DSLRs as well as the DJI Mavic and Spark drones.

There are three models in the series, which are all made from a matte-finish tarpaulin material and offer the IPX3 environmental protection standard.

The Agua Versa backpack is designed for carrying photographic gear but can easily be converted into a backpack for daily use by removing the “doc-bag” camera insert. The Versa can be carried as a backpack, sling bag or x-position style and comes with external charging system for mobile devices.

The main compartment comes with laptop and tablet pocket, and there are several smaller pockets as well. Three water-proof outer pockets can hold a large variety of smaller items, and the rigid bottom offers impact protection when setting the bag down. The bag can hold a Canon 5D-sized full-frame DSLR and two F2.8 lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash.

The Versa’s strap system can be adjusted for sling-style use. Inside your gear is protected from the elements.

The Agua Drone Lander is made from the same waterproof material as the Versa, but it was made to function as a carrier for the DJI Mavic or Spark drones. The latter and accessories are are protected by a padded three-layer insert, and an integrated landing mat doubles as a work surface. The Drone Lander is carried in the sling position, and an additional diagonal strap offers better stability for long-distance carrying.

The third model in the line, the Agua Sling, combines a compact design with storage capacity for a 5D-sized DSLR and three lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash gun. A padded strap allows for sling-style carrying and gear is accessed through a side-opening. Like the Versa, the Agua Sling comes with a water-proof front pocket for personal items and an external charging port for mobile devices. The main compartment offers a laptop pocket.

The Drone Lander comes with a landing mat. Padded inserts protect your drone and accessories.

We’ve had a chance to use the Agua Versa backpack for a couple of weeks, and our first impression is indeed very positive. The backpack is well-made, and the strap system is comfortable to wear and allows for a lot of adjustment.

There are plenty of external and internal pockets to help you organize all sorts of small things, such as batteries, memory cards and other accessories. My 14″ Acer just fits into the internal laptop sleeve and the camera insert holds a DSLR and a couple of lenses no problem. When the insert is removed, the bag also works well as a rugged day pack, with more than enough space for a change of clothes for when you bike to work.

You should be aware that access to your gear is only available from openings in the sides, but once you’re used to that, getting your stuff in and out of the bag is easy and quick. You can now pre-order the Agua bags on Indiegogo from $ 100 for each model with the early bird special, which sounds like an interesting deal if you are in need of a waterproof bag for your imaging gear.

It’ll also picks brief elements from longer clips and you can still interfere manually though and change the order of clips or the music. As you would expect, QuikStories integrates with most social networks you already have on your phone but you can also export the finalized video to use it in any way you want. The video below gives you a pretty good idea of how the feature works.
