Moment launches anamorphic lens and other gear for smartphone filmmakers

Many photographers consider Moment lenses to be the best quality smartphone accessory lenses out there. Now the company returns to crowdfunding platform Kickstarter with a new product line, this time for video shooters and filmmakers rather than stills photographers.

The headline product is an anamorphic add-on lens which allows you to achieve the same super-wide look and lens flare we are used to from Hollywood movies. The lens alters the field of view of the built-in camera on your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel device and locks onto a specific lens case.

The lens currently works with a range of video-specific apps, including Filmic Pro, but Moment still has to update its own app in order to achieve an undistorted live preview of the footage captured with the lens.

The lens is not the only new accessory for filmmakers, however. There is also a battery case for the iPhone X which can charge via the Lighting port or Qi wireless charging and comes with a dedicated camera button. Of course it’s designed to attach Moment lenses as well.

Finally, Moment also debuted a counterweight for gimbals like the DJO Osmo Mobile 2, and a lens filter mount that can be used to attach ND and other filters to any of Moment’s lenses.

All the new items can be ‘pre-ordered’ on Kickstarter, where the campaign has quickly reached astronomical levels of funding—with 21 days to go, Moment has raised over $ 800,000 against a goal of just $ 50,000. All this funding despite each item being pretty low-cost: the filter holder is yours for a $ 29 pledge, the battery case will set you back $ 79, and the lens is priced at $ 119. Shipping is scheduled for June.

DJI launches Zenmuse XT2 4K visual and thermal camera for enterprise drones

DJI has teamed up with FLIR Systems to launch the Zenmuse XT2, its newest thermal camera for drones. As with the original XT model launched in 2015, the XT2 captures heat signatures to reveal things otherwise invisible to the naked eye. On-board FLIR MSX tech combines both the heat data and visual data from the camera into a single image for easier object identification.

The model features a 12MP 4K visual camera with a 1/1.7″ CMOS sensor (up to 8x digital zoom) and two different thermal resolutions: 336 x 256 (up to 4x digital zoom) and 640 x 512 (up to 8x digital zoom). It also sports 9mm, 13mm, 19mm, and 25mm lenses, and an IP44 rating for flights in fog, rain, snow, and smoke.

DJI’s Spotlight Pro tech utilizes both HeatTrack and QuickTrack flight modes to automatically track objects while the operator concentrates on incoming data and flight operations.

The Zenmuse XT2 thermal camera is designed for use in search and rescue operations, to perform industrial inspections, and more. The camera is compatible with the DJI Matrice 600 Pro and Matrice 200 Series enterprise drones; support will arrive first in the Android app followed later on by the iOS app.

Authorized DJI Enterprise dealers around the globe are now offering the Zenmuse XT2 thermal camera, but DJI hasn’t revealed the price. FLIR is accepting quote requests from potential customers, though.

The Zenmuse XT2 is a powerful thermal imaging camera that transforms data into actionable insights. Professional drone operators can use on-board intelligent features like FLIR MSX® technology to combine visual and temperature data into one image, allowing operators to easily identify objects of concern. Dubblefilm launches two new pre-exposed 35mm effects films

Analogue photography brand Dubblefilm has introduced a pair of new effects films with partner Kono!. Named Bubblegum and Monsoon, the latest in a line of pre-colored emulsions work at opposite ends of the spectrum—with Bubblegum injecting lots of orange warmth and Monsoon creating a cool cyan/blue effect.

Dubblefilm describes Monsoon as having “added tone producing deep colours inspired by the freshness of a post-monsoon rain,” while Bubblegum produces “sweet colour too [sic] spark your visual taste buds.” Monsoon seems to be very popular, as it has already sold out on the Dubblefim site, though it is still available on Kono! as of this writing.

The films are created from existing film stock made by Kono!, some of it unusual, which is then passed through a machine named The Reanimator. This machine pre-exposes the film to deliver the characteristic effects of each stock. The films are all C-41 process color negative emulsions and can be handled by a standard mini-lab. Dubblefilm says “Results will vary depending on shooting conditions,” but that you should “expect something truly surprising every time.”

Syrp launches Magic Carpet Pro slider with ‘infinitely extendable’ track

Filmmakers who need really long sliders are the target of the new Magic Carpet Pro, the latest in a series of sliders announced by accessories manufacturer Syrp. The key selling point of the Magic Carpet Pro is its ‘limiteless’ range, a feature made possible by a new track lever design that allow users to lengthen their slide by simply clicking additional lengths of track into place—no tools required.

But that’s not all the Magic Carpet Pro can do.

A newly designed flywheel sits inside the camera carriage, eliminating the need for belts and pulleys while creating smooth motion during manually controlled camera movements. And as with all of Syrp’s other slider systems, automated motion control can be added via a Genie system; in fact, the Genie ll is able to slot directly into the new quick release holder in the carriage itself.

The tracks are made from aluminum, and are expected to manage a payload of up to 70lbs when no extension tracks are in use, and up to 50lb when they are. Here’s a quick video intro from Syrp itself:

The Syrp Magic Carpet Pro can be pre-ordered now for May/June delivery, with kit prices ranging from $ 990 to $ 1470. Three kits will be available, including one with a two foot ‘Short Track’, one with a ‘Medium Track’ of three feet, and a third that includes both the short and the medium tracks to create a combined five foot slider.

Venus Optics officially launches the Laowa 25mm F2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro

About a week ago, Venus Optics’ Japanese distributor Sightron announced two new lenses: the Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero-D and 25mm F2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro. And while the 9mm F2.8 Zero-D still hasn’t made its way onto the English language Venus Optics site yet, today did see the official announcement of the strange Laowa 25mm F2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro.

Nothing has changed about the lens’ design since last week’s debut: the 25mm F2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro is still made from 8 elements in 6 groups—including an ultra low dispersion lens and multilayer coating on each element—which allow for a max working distance of 40 mm (5x) to 45 mm (2.5x). Ultimately, this lens was designed to be as portable as possible, as this comparison between it and the Canon MP-E 65mm F2.8 1-5x Macro demonstrates:

Light.co launches ‘Depth Collective’ to support photojournalism with the L16 camera

Light.co, the company behind the innovative (if still in its infancy) Light L16 camera, has announced a new initiative called Depth Collective that aims to support photojournalists in their efforts at “pursuing the truth.” The initiative revolves around the L16 camera itself, which Light.co presents as an inconspicuous alternative to DSLRs for photojournalists who don’t want to be noticed.

“In the past few years,” the company said, “we’ve seen some photojournalists swap their DSLRs for iPhones to stay inconspicuous in their reporting—but they sacrifice quality to do so.” The L16 is a better option, says the company, thanks to its 16 individual camera modules, computational approach to photography, and 52MP max resolution.

Depth Collective members are given multiple perks under the membership, including a $ 500 discount off the L16 camera, early previews of new L16 updates and features, a shot at a bi-annual $ 5,000 reporting grant, plus a free Peak Design pouch and wrist strap.

Any visual artist or photojournalist can apply for Depth Collective membership, but they must have a UK or US address to which the L16 camera can be shipped—shipping elsewhere will start “soon,” but a specific date hasn’t been provided. Applicants must provide a link to their website or portfolio, as well as a brief statement about how the L16 camera will help them with their photojournalism. Sony launches a7 III: sub-$2000 24MP full frame mirrorless with a7R III’s advances

Sony has announced the a7 III, a sub-$ 2000 image-stabilized 24MP full frame mirrorless camera that incorporates many of the features and improvements brought in with the a7R III. Primary among these are the introduction of a BSI sensor, along with the larger capacity ‘Z’ battery, AF joystick and the EyeAF feature that impressed us so much on the 42MP model.

The company says the AF system is derived from the one in the a9 and performs twice as fast as the one on the a7 II. Its 693 AF points offer 93% frame coverage and are supported by 425 contrast-detection AF points.

The a7 III gains the same ‘Front End LSI’ pre-processor that enabled many of the feature and speed improvements in the a7R III. This includes 10 frame per second shooting that can be combined with continuous AF and a buffer of up to 177 JPEG images.

24p 4K video capture is taken from a 6K region of the sensor, while 30p shooting comes from a roughly 5K region with a 1.2x crop. The camera offers both S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves for shooting wide dynamic range scenes or Hybrid Log Gamma for playing back directly on high dynamic range displays without the need for post-processing.

Both internal video capture and HDMI output remain limited to 8-bit, which can limit the degree of processing flexibility for Log footage. Internal recording is up to 100 Mbps 8-bit 4:2:0, while HDMI out is 8-bit 4:2:2, meaning twice the color resolution. It can also shoot 1080/120p, which can be output either as normal-speed video or conformed down as slow-motion footage.

As with the a7R III, the a7 III inherits the same body shape and battery first introduced in the sports-orientated a9. This not only means a more comfortable hand grip but also the NP-FZ100 battery that gave a 2.2x increase in battery life on the high-res model. The Z-type battery allows the camera to offer 610 shots per charge (710 using the rear screen). This is a little more than double that of its predecessor an the most of any mirrorless camera yet.

The larger body also means the a7 III gains the AF joystick and button layout from the a7R III, including dedicated AF-On and Protect/Rate buttons. These, along with the revised menus, made the a7R III easier than ever to configure and work with, so should be a similarly big step forward for the basic a7 series. The a7 III also gains touchscreen control.

The a7 III uses the same 2.36m dot OLED viewfinder as its predecessor, giving a 1024 x 768 pixel view, rather than the higher-res version in the a7R III. However, updated optics mean the panel now provides a larger view with 0.78x magnification, up from 0.71x on the previous camera.

In keeping with recent Sony models, there is no support for the in-camera ‘Playmemories Camera Apps.’

The camera will be available from April at a cost of $ 1999, body-only or will be available in a kit with a 28-70mm lens.

Spectacular Full-frame Image Quality

The newly developed 24.2MPi back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor is paired with a front-end LSI that effectively doubles the readout speed of the image sensor, as well as an updated BIONZ X™ processing-engine that boosts processing speed by approximately 1.8 times compared to the ?7 II. These powerful components work together to allow the camera to shoot at faster speeds while also enabling its impressive ISO range of 100 – 51200 (expandable to ISO 50 – 204800 for still images) and an overall 1.5 stopix improvement in image quality. The camera also features a massive 15-stopii dynamic range at low sensitivity settings, ensuring outstanding overall performance at all settings and in all shooting conditions, with significant advancements in accurate color reproductions of skin tones and the vibrant colors of nature.

This new full-frame model can also output 14 bit RAW format[ix] even in silent and continuous shooting modes, and is equipped with a 5-axis optical image stabilization system that results in a 5.0 stepv shutter speed advantage.

Significant Advances in AF Speed and Performance

The innovative new ?7 III full-frame mirrorless camera features a level of AF performance that has been largely improved over the ?7 II, including the addition of 4D FOCUS™ capabilities. The new camera has 425 contrast AF points that work with a 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system inherited from the acclaimed ?9 model. This innovative AF system covers approximately 93% of the frame, ensuring reliable focusing and tracking for even the most difficult to capture subjects.

AF response and tracking has also been greatly improved in the new camera, with almost 2xii the focusing speed in low-light condition and 2xii the tracking speed compared to the previous model as a result of the faster image sensor readout. This allows complex and unpredictable motion to be captured with far greater precision and accuracy.

The acclaimed Eye AF feature is also available in the new camera, even in AF-C mode, which is extremely useful for situations where the subject is turning around, looking down or otherwise obstructed. It also works when the ?7 III is being used with Sony’s A-mount lenses with an optional LA-EA3 adaptor[x]. Additional improvements in focusing flexibility include the addition of a multi-selector or ‘joystick’ for moving focusing points quickly, the addition of touch focusing capability, AF availability in Focus Magnifier mode, an ‘AF On’ button and much more.

Speed to Capture Every Decisive Moment

The new ?7 III is equipped with an updated image processing system that allows it to shoot full resolution images at up to 10 fpsiii with continuous, accurate AF/AE tracking for up to 177 Standard JPEG images, 89 compressed RAW images or 40 uncompressed RAW images[xi]. This high speed mode is available with either a mechanical shutter or a completely silent shootingiv, adding to the immense flexibility of the camera. The camera can also shoot continuously at up to 8 fpsiii in live view mode with minimal lag in the viewfinder or LCD screen.

For added convenience, while large groups of burst images are being written to the memory card, many of the cameras key functions are operable, including access to the ‘Fn’ (Function) and ‘Menu’ buttons, image playback and several other menus and parameters including image rating and other functions that facilitate on-location image sorting.

Additionally, if there is fluorescent or artificial lighting present in a shooting environment, users can activate the Anti-flicker[xii] function to allow the ?7 III to automatically detect frequency of the lighting and time the shutter to minimize its effect on images being captured. This minimizes any exposure or color anomalies that can sometimes occur at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds.

High Quality 4K Video

The new ?7 III is an outstanding video camera as well, offering 4Kvi (3840×2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the full-frame image sensor. In video mode, the camera uses full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect about 2.4x[xiii] the amount of data required for 4K movies, and then oversamples it to produce high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth.

An HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)[xiv] picture profile is available on the ?7 III as well, which supports an Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR (HLG) compatible TV’s to playback beautiful, true-to-life 4K HDR imagery. Further, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased color grading flexibility, as well as Zebra functionality, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording. The camera can also record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbpsvi, allowing footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

Upgraded Build, Design and Customization

Sony’s newest full-frame camera is equipped with a variety of enhanced capabilities that were first implemented in the ?9 and then again in the ?7R III. These include dual media slots, with support in one slot for UHS-II type SD memory cards. Users have a variety of options for storing their content in each of the cards, including separate JPEG / RAW recording, separate still image / movie recording, relay recording and more. Battery life has been greatly extended as well – with a CIPA measurement of up to 710 shots per chargeviii, it offers the world’s longestvii battery life of any Mirrorless camera, as the new camera utilizes Sony’s Z series battery NP-FZ100 that have approximately 2.2 times the capacity of the W series battery NP-FW50 utilized in the ?7 II.

The new camera features “My Menu” functionality which allows up to 30 menu items to be registered for instant recall when needed. Users can also apply star ratings to their still images through the camera controls for easier image playback and review, and edit the first three characters of all still image files. Additionally, there is a total of 81 functions that are assignable to 11 custom buttons, and the camera is both dust and moisture resistant.[xv]

The ?7 III features high-resolution, high-contrast, fast-start XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with approximately 2.3 million dots for extremely accurate, true-to-life detail reproduction. “Standard” or “High” display quality settings are also available for both the viewfinder and monitor as well. It also is capable of seamlessly transferring files to a smartphone, tablet, computer or FTP server via Wi-Fi®, while also offering a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1 Gen 1) USB Type-C™ Terminal for increased flexibility in power supply and faster image transfer speed during tethered shooting.

The ?7 III model also comes with Sony’s new software suite “Imaging Edge”, which extends the creative capabilities of the entire shooting process – from pre-processing to post-processing. “Imaging Edge” provides three PC applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, available for free download, which support live-view PC remote shooting and RAW development. The Sony ?7 III Full-frame Interchangeable Lens Camera will ship this April for about $ 2000 US for the body and $ 2200 in a kit with the FE 28?70 mm F3.5?5.6 kit lens. Huawei launches MediaPad M5 Pro tablet with M-Pen

There won’t be a new flagship smartphone from Huawei at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year (the P20, which is rumored to come with a triple-camera, will be launched on the 27th of March). However, the Chinese device maker has just launched a number of new tablets, including the MediaPad M5 Pro which looks like a potentially interesting option for image editing on the go.

The M5 Pro will be available with a 8.4″ or 10.8″ IPS display. Both screens feature a 2560 x 1600 2K resolution and a screen/body ratio of 82%. On top of that the larger version comes with the M-Pen stylus which supports tilting and shading and offers 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Huawei says the M-Pen is ideal for note-taking and image editing alike.

If that’s true will largely depend on support for the pen in third-party apps. Huawei has not provided any information on this topic yet. In addition a full-size keyboard that is connected via Pogo Pins in combination with a Desktop View mode allow for a PC-like working experience.

In any case, the MediaPad M5 Pro looks like a capable and attractively designed Android tablet all around. The 8.4″ version comes with two speakers, the larger model offers a quad-speaker setup and a surround-sound option which has been co-developed with Harman-Kardon. Hi-Res audio is supported when listening through headphones.

The Android OS and Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 UI are powered by a Kirin 960 Series processor and a 5,100 mAh battery in the smaller model and 7,500 mAh variant in the 10.8″ version – both supporting quick-charge – should provide plenty of battery life. The MediaPad M5 Pro will be available in Champagne Gold and Space Gray. Pricing ranges from 500 Euros (approximately USD 615) for the Wi-Fi version with 64GB memory to 600 Euros (approximately USD 735) for the 128GB LTE model.

Blackmagic launches 4K broadcast camera for price of a high-end DSLR

Video camera maker Blackmagic Design has announced the “world’s most affordable and flexible professional” camera aimed at broadcast and studio film makers. The URSA Broadcast shoots Ultra HD resolution, uses an interchangeable lens mount and costs just $ 3,495.

The camera comes with the B4 lens mount, but this can be switched so the camera can accept PL, F or EF lenses. Users can load relatively low-cost SD or CFast media to record their footage, with the camera offering two slots for each format. Lossless 12-bit CinemaDNG Raw recording is possible for projects that require the best quality, while broadcast footage can be shot in 10-bit DNxHD 220X, DNxHD 145 or ProRes formats with metadata.

Blackmagic says the URSA Broadcast produces vibrant colors and accurate skin tones so that footage is ready to use straight from the camera, while an extended video dynamic range ensures a wide range of brightness values can be recorded. Three ND filters are built-in and can be dropped into the light path at the turn of a dial. The strengths offered are ¼, 1/16th and 1/64th stops, and each comes with IR compensation to maintain matchable colors from different situations.

The handling of the camera concentrates on placing controls on the outside of the body rather than in menu systems, and the company claims that should any button or control point fail during a job its function can be switched to another button as redundancy has been built into the design.

URSA Broadcast is designed to be the toughest and most fully featured camera available. It includes everything customers need in a compact handheld magnesium alloy body that’s durable and light enough to use anywhere. There’s an external high visibility LCD status display for viewing critical shooting information, a foldout touch screen for reviewing shots without needing an extra on-set monitor, professional connections such as 12GSDI, XLR audio, built in high quality stereo microphones and more. Plus, every single control on the camera has a redundant backup, including the power, so if anything should go wrong in the field, the camera can still be used.

URSA Broadcast also features built in neutral density (ND) filters with IR compensation for quickly reducing the amount of light that enters the camera. The ¼, 1/16th and 1/64th stop filters are specifically designed to match the colorimetry of the camera and provide additional latitude, even under harsh lighting conditions. That means customers can use different combinations of aperture and shutter angle to achieve shallower depth of field, or specific levels of motion blur, in a wider range of situations. The IR filters evenly compensate for both far red and infrared wave lengths to eliminate IR contamination. The ND filters are true optical filters with a precision mechanism that quickly moves them into place when the ND filter dial is turned.

Blackmagic URSA Broadcast puts control buttons, switches, knobs and dials on the outside of the camera, giving customers direct access to the most important camera features. The controls are laid out in a logical order that makes them easy to remember so operators can use the camera without having to look at the buttons, hunt through menus, or take their eye off of the action. URSA Broadcast also features a high visibility LCD status display which shows important information such as timecode, shutter and lens settings, battery, recording status, and audio levels. The status display features a backlight and is designed to be clearly visible in both dimly lit studios and outside in direct sunlight.

URSA Broadcast features both dual CFast 2.0 recorders and dual SD/UHS-II card recorders. Both types of media are standard, non-proprietary, inexpensive and readily available at most computer and camera stores. Customers can record 10bit broadcast quality DNxHD 220X, DNxHD 145 or ProRes files with metadata, making it is easy to integrate URSA Broadcast into existing broadcast systems and workflows. URSA Broadcast can even record lossless 12bit CinemaDNG RAW files for high quality programming and post production. With dual slots for each media type, URSA Broadcast gives customers redundant recorders and non-stop recording. When the first card is full, recording automatically continues onto the next card so the full card can be swapped while recording continues on the other.

All of the connections on URSA Broadcast are standard television industry connectors so customers don’t need expensive, proprietary cables. The camera features multi rate 12GSDI connections for video output and return program feed input. Both connections automatically switch speed so they work with all HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60 over a single cable. In addition, URSA Broadcast features HD-SDI monitoring out, 2 LANC inputs, balanced XLR audio with phantom power, and timecode/reference input. Canon launches refillable ink printers in the UK

Canon has announced that it will introduce a series of printers that are fitted with ink tanks designed so that users can refill the inks themselves. In move that might be interpreted as an “if you can’t beat them, join them” attitude, the company will release four models in the new Pixma G range, each of which has four built-in tanks for black, cyan, magenta and yellow ink.

The company will also sell bottles of ink so that users can refill the printers without having to buy individual cartridges—they will also, in theory, save money.

The new printers will be filled via 70ml bottles of colored dye ink which cost £10, and a 135ml bottle of black pigment ink that will cost £13. This makes the colored ink 13p per ml and the black 9.5p per ml compared with the 200p per ml that UK consumers pay for ink for the Pixma MG series, and 106p paid for 1ml of ink that’s used in the Pixma Pro range.

It’s worth noting, however, that Canon hasn’t made any print-life claims with these inks, and the printers are being marketed as general-purpose photo-capable machines rather than photo-specialist printers, so perhaps we shouldn’t expect the same quality.

The Pixma G series consists of four models that range from basic printer to a multi-functional four-in-one (print, copy, scan and fax) with the second two models offering Wi-Fi connectivity and printing from a smartphone app.

Connectivity

PIXMA G4510 and PIXMA G3510 both feature Wi-Fi technology, allowing users to print wirelessly via a laptop/PC or smart device. Use the Canon PRINT app[3] for printing, scanning and copying purposes, as well as printer maintenance. You can access PIXMA Cloud Link via the Canon PRINT app so you can print photos and documents remotely from cloud services such as Facebook, GoogleDrive, Dropbox, Instagram and more.

Both models are compatible with Mopria on Android so you can print without needing to download additional apps. PIXMA G4510 is compatible with Apple AirPrint which allows compatible iOS devices to print directly too.

PIXMA G4510 and PIXMA G3510 allow users to simultaneously handle both conventional Wi-Fi connection via a router and without access to a Wi-Fi router using Wireless Direct or Access Point Mode[4], making connecting a smart device to the printer simple.

Photo Printing

Users can now print borderless 4 x 6” photos in just 60 seconds and select from a range of templates with My Image Garden. Use the software to get creative with your photos and print various projects using your own images.
