Instagram launches Mute button, tests ‘all caught up’ feature

Ever after Instagram decided to abandon its chronological feed and reorder user feeds using an algorithm, it has been difficult to keep track of what you’ve already seen. This, in turn, keeps some users nervously scrolling through their feeds to make sure they don’t miss any important posts from the people they follow. According to TechCrunch, Instagram is testing a new feature that will help alleviate this anxiety.

The feature notifies you when you’re all caught up so you can turn your attention to another app or, heaven forbid, even put your phone away. In practice, the feature will be very simple: as you scroll through your feed, you’ll get a notification saying “You’re All Caught Up – You’ve seenall new post from the past 48 hours.”

In combination with the recently announced “time spent” feature—which will give users a better idea of how much time they spend with the app once implemented—this latest function is aimed at helping Instagramers control and manage their time in a more efficient way.

Of course, one could argue that simply going back to the original chronological feed would have been the simpler solution… but we digress.

In addition to testing ‘all caught up’, Instagram today introduced a new feature that allows you to mute accounts in pretty much the same way as on parent platform Facebook. You can hide posts in your feed from certain accounts without unfollowing or blocking them, allowing for a more personalized feed.

Like on Facebook, you can still see posts from muted accounts on their profile, and will still be notified if you are tagged in a post or comment. Muted users are not aware of their status and, of course, you can always unmute an account if you’ve changed your mind.

Nisi shares more details on its full-frame cine lenses and launches Mist filter range

In a bid to clear up online speculation, surprise entrant to the full-frame cinema lens market Nisi has answered some questions about its relationship with brands marketing lenses very similar to its own recently-announced F3 series.

NiSi F3 Cinema Lenses

The company says that it owns the designs of its own lenses as it ‘took ownership’ of them from the ‘now dead’ Bokkeh Bokkelux project. Nisi also claims that it has made changes to the original optical and mechanical designs of the series to make the lenses more reliable, the assembly more accurate, and to reduce their overall weight. Nisi goes on to explain that it is a partner of cinema equipment company Kinefinity, and that it manufactures the brand’s Mavo Prime range of full-frame lenses.

The release doesn’t say it directly, but this is clearly a move that aims to end claims that Nisi is just copying existing lenses and marketing them under a different name.

Further details of the lenses have also been released, including that the five officially announced will be joined by 18mm and 135mm focal lengths in the second half of 2018. We should also expect a ‘new and innovative design for an optical accessory’ in the near future.

As the lenses will cover 46.5mm sensors, the F3 series will be compatible with ARRI Alexia LF, Red Monstro VV, Panavision DXL2, SONY Venice and Canon C700FF cameras (as well as ‘future’ models). Service centers are being established in Europe, USA and South Asia.

Allure Mist Filters

Nisi has also introduced a new series of filters to its cinema range. The Allure Mist filters will come in white and black versions and are designed to soften contrast in movie footage. The white version pulls back highlights and reduces the appearance of skin blemishes, while the black version diminishes the effect of flare and creates a misty atmosphere.

Five Fundamental Facts about the NiSI F3 Range of Full-Frame Prime Cine Lenses (and other news)

Since the announcement of the NiSi F3 range of full-frame lenses, NiSi’s headquarters have been inundated with questions and queries. In order to address some of these, we have compiled a list of answers around five key subjects. Read on for more, and to discover news in our announcement of the new NiSi Allure Mist Black/White Filters

1. Where does the name F3 come from?

The ‘F’ in F3 stands for ‘Full-Frame’. The lenses are all designed for full frame cameras and are extremely versatile, coming complete with PL, Canon EF and Sony E-Mounts. Mounts for other systems will need to be purchased separately, although NiSi will provide shims to ensure consistent filmmaking.

The number ‘3’ simply means ‘third generation’ and also refers to the range’s three key design characteristics, i.e. high resolution, low dispersion and retro flare.

2. What exactly is the relationship between the NiSi F3 range and Bokkelux?

Let’s be clear; the F3 prime lenses belong solely to NiSi since the company took ownership from Bokkelux. Since this time, NiSi are pleased to report that numerous improvements have been made and, being based on the original Bokkelux design, NiSi’s optical and mechanical design engineering experts have re-optimised some key elements to deliver the excellent new range.

These include:

  • Improved accuracy with assembly and improved supply chain for the optical elements
  • Improved physical attributes, i.e. the weight and calibre of the lenses have been improved with reliability and user assurance being of primary importance
  • Along with these significant improvements, NiSi has developed a new and innovative design for an optical accessory for F3 range. Once this is completed, we will release information, but you can be assured that it will meet the unique needs for many filmmakers.

3. OK, so what about the relationship between the NiSi F3, Kinefinity and Mavo Prime?

That’s simple, really. Kinefinity is partner of NiSi. Our specialist engineers have modified the industrial design for the Mavo Prime while retaining the same performance and quality. The new F3 range and Mavo Primes are manufactured exclusively by NiSi.

4. Will the NiSi F3 Primes come with both imperial and metric markings?

Absolutely. Markings will be in feet and metres.

5. What are the details for the F3 sales warranty policy and can we expect additions to the focal lengths this year?

NiSi is currently in the process of setting up special service centres, specifically for sales warranties. Bases will be in Europe, North America and in South Asia. We will make further announcements about the details of the certified sales warranty suppliers after the third quarter. You can expect to see 18mm and 135mm primes coming to light in the second half of this year.

Compatibility

The new F3 prime lenses cover full-frame format which is compatible with ARRI Alexia LF, Red Monstro VV, Panavision DXL2, SONY Venice and Canon C700FF, along with ‘future-proofing’ for other cameras that we will see arriving in the future. The new F3 lenses offer filmmakers advanced resolution and perfect dispersion control, image contrast and flare; all optimised by their stylish, retro housing.

The entire F3 series of lenses share the same physical attributes, allowing for the simple and time-efficient fitting of lens accessories, along with the native ‘Sensed presence’ technology, which provides users with the ability to shoot with a beautiful bokeh. The native apochromatic optical design results in excellent ratio/axial dispersion performance, giving a pure and natural colour, with almost no purple/green fringing within focus and in bokeh.

OnePlus 6 smartphone launches with bigger image sensor and OIS

Sticking to its usual 6-month product cycle, Chinese manufacturer OnePlus today announced its latest flagship device, the OnePlus 6. Compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus 5T, the new model is a fairly incremental update.

It comes with the newest Qualcomm top-end chipset, the Snapdragon 845, and the screen size has been boosted to 6.28-inch while, thanks to a new 19:9 aspect ratio, more or less maintaining the overall dimensions of the predecessors. The body also now covered with Gorilla Glass at front and back, and while there is a headphone jack, there’s no memory expansion port.

The specifications of the dual-camera are very similar to the 5T, but at 1/2.6″ the 16MP sensor in the main camera is a touch larger and now equipped with optical image stabilization. The lens aperture remains at F1.7. The 20MP secondary imager measures 1/2.8″ and also comes with an F1.7 aperture. The equivalent focal length is 27mm and PDAF is the AF system of choice.

As before, image data from the secondary sensor is computationally merged with the main camera image for advanced digital zooming, as well as better detail and lower noise levels.

The background-blurring portrait mode now works on front and rear cameras, and in video mode you can capture footage at 4K resolution. A 720p/480fps slow-motion option is on board as well.

These are solid but not specifically exciting features and specifications. However, as is typical with OnePlus, the new model will be competing on price by offering high-end specifications at a lower price point than the more established competition.

The base model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is $ 530, a $ 580 middle option offers 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and a new premium version that expands storage to 256GB will set you back $ 630.

The new models will be available in North America and Europe starting May 22nd.

Bolder Design

Google launches Google One cloud storage plans, offers 2TB for $10/month

If you are the kind of photographers who likes backing up your images and other data in the cloud, you should have a closer look at the new cloud storage plans that have just been announced by Google.

The new plans are called Google One, and they replace the existing Google Drive plans. There is a 100GB option for $ 2 a month, $ 3 a month get you 200GB of storage and a full 2TB will set you back $ 10 a month. The latter represents a 50% price reduction compared to the equivalent Google Drive plan.

As a consequence, the existing 1TB/$ 10 plan is discontinued but, as before, you can still get up to 30TB for $ 300 a month if you’re really storage hungry. Storage space can be used for storing any kind of files on Google Drive, attachments and emails in Gmail, and original quality images and videos (including 4K resolution) in Google Photos.

The new plans all come with live chat support—which previously exclusive to G Suite business account users—and will roll out in the US “in the coming months” before migrating to other regions shortly thereafter.

DJI launches Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 drone with ‘OcuSync’ and 60% quieter flight

Following numerous leaks, DJI has officially launched its new Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 drone today: basically a Phantom 4 Pro with a new ‘OcuSync’ transmission system for high-res low-latency video transmission, and a 4 decibel reduction in flying noise (that makes it 60% quieter).

Beyond these two features, the drone features the same build and internals as the Phantom 4 Pro. That means a 4K/60fps camera with a 1-inch 20MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and support for taking stills at 14fps in Burst Mode; an “aerial optimized” F2.8 wide-angle lens with a 24mm equivalent focal length, 8 elements (including two aspherical) in 7 groups, and the promise of low dispersion/distortion; and a mechanical shutter with a max speed of 1/2000s.

There’s also the same FlightAutonomy system, an “advanced aerial intelligence and flight automation platform.”

As mentioned above, what’s new about the P4P V2.0 is OcuSync and quieter flight. There’s not much to say about quiet flight except that noise has been reduced by 60% over its predecessor. OcuSync, on the other hand, is a little more interesting.

The OcuSync HD video transmission system replaces Lightbridge in the original Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced. Like Lightbridge, OcuSync offers a 7km transmission range and automatic dual-frequency band switching (where allowed). Unlike Lightbridge, it connects to DJI Goggles RE wirelessly, and features high-def, low-latency transmission—both convenient features for FPV shooters.

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is available now from DJI for $ 1,500 USD. When bundled with the Phantom 4 Pro+ V2.0 controller—which features a 5.5-inch, 1080p resolution screen with 1000 nits brightness—the price increases to $ 1,800 USD. Finally, DJI is also offering a $ 2,200 USD bundle that includes the DJI Goggles.

Olloclip launches Connect X lens system for Apple iPhone X

Smartphone accessory lens maker Olloclip has launched a new mobile lens system that is designed specifically for use with the Apple iPhone X.

With a number of interchangeable lenses and a “lens mount” that clips onto your device, Connect X works in a very similar way to previous Olloclip systems. However, the new lenses come with a number of features that are exclusive to Apple’s flagship smartphone, including a lens mount that aligns perfectly with the iPhone X’s front and rear cameras, allowing for use of the accessory lenses with both camera modules.

In addition, the lens mount is expandable and therefore usable in combination with most protective phone cases. The Connect X system also comes with a pendant stand designed to carry the set of lenses, but that also works as a mini-tripod.

There are six lenses available for the Connect X system:

  • Super-Wide: Four-element lens with 120° field of view
  • Ultra-Wide: 155° field-of-view
  • Fisheye + 15x Macro: 180° wide-angle spherical effect + 15x magnification
  • Telephoto: 2x optical zoom

Tamron launches 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony FE, costs $800

In February, Tamron announced development of a 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. We got our hands on a prototype at CP+, and spoke to Tamron about the lens in our CP+ interview, but we still didn’t have much in way of details about this exciting piece of Sony FE glass… until now.

Tamron officially launched the lens this morning, revealing full specs, release date, and pricing information for the first third-party standard zoom to be created natively for the Sony FE mount. Here’s a video introduction to the new zoom lens:

The lens was designed from the ground up for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, and engineers at Tamron focused on three main features: optical quality, portability, and silent autofocus. The lens weighs in at just 19.4oz (550g) and measures just 4.6in (11.6cm) long. And while the body was made of polycarbonate instead of metal (to save weight) the lens is still ‘moisture resistant’ so you can use it in inclement weather.

Optically, the lens is made up of 15 elements in 12 groups, including an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, a LD (Low Dispersion) element, a GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element, and two hybrid aspherical elements that have been arranged “in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size,” according to Tamron.

Finally, as the name suggests, the lens features Tamron’s new RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor. This new stepping motor offers quick, precise, and “exceedingly quiet” autofocus that Tamron claims “virtually eliminat[es] extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.”

The working distance of just 2.24 in. from the front element allows photographers to enjoy close-up shooting that emphasizes the sense of perspective unique to wide angles. Snapchat launches water-resistant Spectacles V2 with photo capture

Snapchat has just introduced version 2 of its Spectacles camera glasses, and they come with a bunch of new features. The glasses—which Snapchat has dubbed “your hands-free camera”—can now take photos in addition to video, are water resistant to the point where you can even submerge them for short periods of time for underwater snaps, and will be available with prescription lenses, too.

When Snapchat debuted its original Spectacles camera glasses in September of 2016, the company was able to leverage novelty and scarcity to make the glasses a big hit… for a time. But it didn’t take long for both novelty and scarcity to wear off, and the glasses never really caught on with a mainstream audience.

After selling a little over 200K glasses, demand plummeted and that… was that. No doubt, the new features, more stylish options, and immediate mass-market availability of Spectacles V2 are meant to appeal to a much broader audience and succeed where Version 1 fell flat.

Spec wise, Snapchat Spectacles V2 are nothing special. They take video at 1216 x 1216 pixels, and photos at 1642 x 1642 (a whopping 2.7MP). The field of view has also been decreased from 115 to 105 for less of a fish-eye look.

Where the Spectacles V2 should shine compared to its predecessor, though, is in build quality and convenience. According to TechCrunch’s Josh Constine—who got to try the specs out early—the glasses feel much sturdier, the charging case is much smaller and more convenient, battery life is substantially improved, and pairing to your phone is easier too.

What’s more, Constine seems to think these glasses could be the commercial success that V1 (and Google Glass, for that matter) never were:

After two days of use, I think Spectacles V2 cross the threshold from clumsy novelty to creative tool accessible to the mainstream. And amidst user growth struggles, that’s what Snap needs right now.

Spectacles V2 are available to purchase today from Snapchat’s website in the US, UK, Canada and France, with more countries on the way. They’ll cost you $ 150 ($ 20 bucks more than the original V1s) and are available in Onyx, Sapphire and Ruby with each color offering a darker or lighter version of the attached lens.

OWC launches ThunderBlade external SSD: up to 8TB with 2800MB/s speeds

Media professionals in need of a fast, reliable, and high-capacity external SSD have a new option in OWC’s ThunderBlade. Snapchat launches more realistic AR face masks for iPhone X users

It looks like more and more third party developers are starting to make use of the iPhone X’s TrueDepth front camera that was originally implemented on the device for Apple’s FaceID unlocking feature. Yesterday, Bellus3D launched a 3D face scanning app for the iPhone X. Today, Snapchat has delivered an update to its iOS app which lets iPhone X users decorate their selfie images with augmented reality masks that take advantage of Apple’s advanced facial mapping technology.

Apple’s TrueDepth front camera will help the masks more realistically superimpose onto the user’s face, and face motion will be tracked more precisely than for Snapchat users with other mobile devices. To start with, there are three Snapchat lenses that utilize the TrueDepth technology: a Mardi Gras-style mask, a Day of the Dead skull, and a gold-plated eye cover. More masks are expected to be made available in the near future.

The TrueDepth camera also allows for DSLR-style blurring of the background, and more accurate application of small details and 3D objects that reflect and react to ambient light in the image.
