Motorola launches Moto Z3 with optional 5G module

Motorola has announced its 2018 flagship smartphone, the Moto Z3, which, like previous Z-series models, is compatible with Motorola’s Moto Mod magnetically attachable expansion modules, including the 10x zoom Hasselblad TrueZoom.

This is Motorola’s third and last generation of Moto Mod-compatible devices

At this point in time the Moto Z3 is a Verizon-exclusive device and once the carrier’s 5G network is available next year, you’ll be able to purchase a brand new Moto Mod: A 5G module that comes with a Qualcomm’s X50 modem and an additional 2,000 mAh of battery capacity, allowing you to send and receive data via a 5G connection. This could make the new Moto an enticing option for anyone sending large image files from the field.

The bad news is that this is Motorola’s third and last generation of Moto Mod-compatible devices, meaning that from next year the modular system is going to be history.

The actual device is quite similar to the already released Moto Z3 Play but comes with a more powerful chipset and a different camera setup. The latter offers a dual-camera on the back, which combines a 12MP RGB sensor with 1.25um pixels and F2.0 aperture with a 12MP monochrome chip for wider dynamic range and lower noise levels. A dual-LED flash is included as well. The front camera unit uses an 8 MP sensor and F2.0 aperture.

The ability to attach a 10x zoom camera module makes the Z3 attractive from a photographic point of view

The Android OS is powered by last year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset instead of the current Snapdragon 840 which can be found in most rival flagships. The battery offers a 3,000 mAh capacity and images can be viewed and composed on a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2160 resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio.

Overall the new Moto’s spec sheet doesn’t look too impressive when compared to some high-end rivals. However, specs aren’t everything and the ability to attach a 10x zoom camera module makes the Z3 attractive from a photographic point of view. The moderate price point of $ 480 is another plus point.

Venus Optics launches ‘weird but revolutionary’ macro probe lens

Venus Optics has announced a new probe-shaped macro lens that captures 2x life size images down a 40cm/15.7in barrel. The Laowa 24mm f/14 Macro Probe lens is designed to produce extreme macro on full frame bodies, and to reach subjects that are hard to approach with conventional macro lenses.

The tip of the lens measures just 2cm across and houses a ring of USB-powered LED lights for focus assistance and for lighting the subject. Animals in burrows and underwater can be photographed as the end of the probe lens is water and dust proof, and the LED lights can be used in those conditions. The closest focus-distance is 2cm at which distance the maximum reproduction ratio of 2:1 is achieved.

A wide angle focal length has been chosen to deliver more depth of field and more environment, while the size of the front element allows users to get truly ground-level view.

It uses a 7-bladed aperture and offers apertures of F14 to F40. Although obviously designed for macro work the focus range covers 470mm / 18.5in to infinity. The whole unit measures 38 x 408mm / 1.5 x 16in, weighs 474g / 16.7oz and will be available in Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony E mounts. An Arri PL model will also be available via special order.

The lens will cost $ 1,499 and is being launched via Kickstarter – where early birds can get discounted deals.

Bug-Eye Perspective
The new Laowa 24mm Probe lens can create a Bug-Eye perspective that cannot be done by conventional macro lens. Not only can it focus really close (2cm @ 2:1) and show a great amount of detail and texture, but also achieve a compelling wide angle ‘Bug Eye’ view (84.1°). More background details can then be included into the shots to create a very informative and stunning macro bug-eye perspective. For telephoto macro lenses, the subject will fill most of the frame and appear isolated from the surrounding environment instead.

2:1 Magnification to Infinity Focus
The new Laowa Probe covers a focusing range from 2:1 macro magnification to Infinity Focus. Photographers can take advantage of the 2:1 maximum magnification to shoot really small bugs/objects and reveal details that cannot be seen by naked eye. The wide focusing range (from Macro to infinity) is also particularly useful for videography as both finer details and environmental background can be captured in one shot.

Deep Depth-of-Field
The wide angle design also means much more depth of field at close distance (compared to the telephoto macro lens) so that more background details will now be visible. Being able to focus so close but still having a deep depth of field is a BIG advantage for both studio and wildlife shooting. The less blurry background allows the habitat of the subject to be visible in your photo.

Waterproof front lens barrel
The front barrel of the lens is waterproof and it can be used to shoot in any environment. This makes shooting in liquid no longer a limitation. The waterproof design also implies that shooting in super dusty environment or with fine powders are not going to be a problem.

40cm long & Tubular Lens Barrel
Thanks to the 40cm (15.7″) long barrel, photographers can focus really close to the subject but still keep themselves and cameras distance away. This unlocks the possibility of shooting in areas which were not accessible in the past. E.g. Shooting a frog hiding in the bushes using our Probe lens, compared to getting a telephoto macro lens super close to avoid leaves blocking your subject. The long lens barrel also allows photographers to keep a safe distance away when shooting lethal animals. The big camera body and lens will no longer ‘alert’ the subject too.

Tiny 2cm lens tip
The tiny 0.2cm-in-diameter lens tip unlocks the possibility to get very low to the ground level to capture a ‘delicious’ perspective and maximize the visual impact. The viewers will be like walking on your shooting subject (e.g. Pizza) now. Moreover, you can insert the lens into tiny caves, bottle or burrows to shoot. The smaller lens tip also enables proper lighting hitting onto the subject whereas typical macro lenses with larger lens barrels will block most of the light.

LED Ring Light at the tip
A LED ring light (powered through the micro-USB slot on the barrel) is mounted at the tip of the lens to provide additional lighting for focus assistance and video shooting.

Full frame coverage
The Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe can cover both the standard 35mm full frame and Super35 image sensor.

Lightweight
The new Laowa weighs only 1.04 pounds (474 grams) and it’s super light and easy to carry.

The lens has one of the most complicated optics design and houses with 27 elements in 19 groups to deliver the exceptional image quality. Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony FE mounts are currently available for standard version. A cine version with click-less aperture and focus gears in Arri PL mount is also available to order.

Availability
The lens is expected to retail at USD 1,499/pc (ex-VAT). It is currently available to pre- order via Kickstarter at a discounted price. The earliest expected delivery date is September. The lens will also be available via authorized resellers from October onwards.

Huawei launches photography contest with an AI judge

Huawei has launched the world’s first photography contest with both AI and human judges. The company invites photographers to submit their best images to its ‘Spark A Renaissance’ competition, during which time both Huawei’s P20 Pro smartphone AI and Leica pro photographer Alex Lambrechts will review the images.

The contest revolves around the P20 Pro, Huawei’s smartphone co-engineered with Leica. The handset features a triple-camera system and Huawei’s Master AI, which works in real-time to determine which of 19 categories any particular scene belongs to, automatically adjusting the settings in an effort to produce the ideal image.

The contest began on July 12 and will run for 8 weeks. During this time, photographers can submit their images via a Facebook Messenger chatbot, where Huawei explains that its P20 AI will evaluate it in multiple ways:

Trained using 4,000,000 images taken by professional photographers and picture editors the AI will then give each photo a personalised AI score based on parameters such as focus, jitter, deflection, colour and composition.

Huawei’s competition will revolve around five themes total, including “Deep in Detail” and “A New Renaissance,” with the winner in each category receiving a P20 Pro smartphone. A total of 10 winners from the themed categories will be given a trip to Florence, Italy, where they’ll attend a Leica masterclass.

Both Leica photographer Alex Lambrechts and Huawei’s AI will review the images taken during the Florence trip. The final winner chosen from them will receive the Grand Prize, a tour of three European countries. As well, Huawei says the top photos from the contest “will be sold to raise money for a local charity.”

Huawei is currently accepting entries for the contest’s first theme: A New Renaissance. The next theme, After Dark, starts on July 24, followed by three more with the final theme starting on August 28. All five themes can be found here.

Manfrotto Noreg series launches with Backpack-30 and Messenger-30 bags

Manfrotto has launched its new Noreg camera bag series with the Backpack-30 and Messenger-30 models. Both bags are designed for premium mirrorless camera systems, each featuring internal camera units that can be removed and used independently of the larger bags. Additionally, both the backpack and messenger have connectors for carrying travel size tripods.

The Noreg series bags feature the same aesthetic and many mutual features, including enough room to accommodate up to a 15″ laptop and 9.7″ tablet, rain covers, interchangeable internal dividers, Flexi dividers, strap connectors for attaching the bags to luggage handles, and sizes that enable them to be used as carry-on bags with many airlines.

Both the messenger bag and backpack have a detachable rear compartment that can be used as a standalone laptop sleeve. The removable internal camera unit, meanwhile, doubles as a standalone shoulder bag with enough space for a premium mirrorless camera with an attached standard zoom lens and up to two extra lenses. The bag can also hold a DJI Mavic Pro combo kit, according to Manfrotto.

Likewise, both bags sport the Manfrotto Protection System for helping shield gear from shocks. The backpack also adds a quick access zippered opening on the top alongside a zippered top flap. Additional accessory items, such as keys and a wallet, can be stored in the backpack’s front multi-zippered pockets. The messenger bag features a bungee cord and pocket on the side for holding items, such as a monopod.

The Backpack-30 measures 29 x 18 x 47cm / 11.4 x 7 x 18.5in and the Messenger-30 measures 40 x 17 x 27cm / 15.7 x 6.7 x 10.6in.

Manfrotto is currently taking pre-orders for both the Noreg Backpack-30 and Messenger-30 bags on its website for $ 269.95 CAD / £159.95 and $ 229.95 CAD / £129.95, respectively. The Noreg bag series is not currently listed on Manfrotto’s US website.

Moment launches camera app with focus on manual control

Moment, the makers of high-end accessory lenses for smartphones, have announced the newly revamped Moment camera app for iPhone and Android. According to Moment the app “provides full manual control and a DSLR shooting experience” and it looks like the programmers have tried their best to turn the marketing promises into reality. A basic version of the app has been available for a couple of years on iOS, but this launch marks a major redesign with manual controls added, as well as support for Android users for the first time.

The app offers full manual control over exposure, ISO, shutter speed, focus, and white balance via on-screen sliders. You can double-tap the screen to separate focus and exposure and on the iPhone version there is even a dual-stage shutter with half and full press, thanks to Apple’s 3D Touch technology.

Photographers can shoot in Raw mode and select from HEIF, HEVC, TIFF, and JPEG image formats. In video mode you can change framerate and video modes from the main screen, without a need to dive into the menu.

If you own a smartphone with dual-camera, the Moment app allows you to manually control which camera module you want to shoot with. This feature is especially useful when using Moment or other accessory lenses. Other features include a Live Histogram and Auto Video Stabilization.

The app is free to download and try but you’ll have to invest $ 2.99 for the iOS version and $ 1.99 for the Android version to get access to the complete feature set.

3 Legged Thing launches ‘one of world’s tallest monopods’

Tripod manufacturer 3 Legged Thing has launched what it is describing as one of the world’s tallest monopods, alongside a heavy duty model and a new monopod foot stabilizer. Trent, a ‘punks’ monopod, will have a maximum extended height of 2m/80in, which is indeed extremely tall for a monopod.

Trent will be made from ‘aircraft-grade magnesium alloy’ and will be able to support kit weighting up to 30 kg / 66 lb, while a further monopod, Alan, will be made in carbon fibre and alloys and will carry up to 60kg/132lbs. Five-section Alan will extend to 1.49m/58.7in but packs down to just 1.49m/58.7in for storage – and fitting into cabin baggage with many airlines. Alan will weigh 0.6 kg / 1.34 lbs and four-section Trent will weigh 0.63 kg / 1.4 lbs.

Both models will feature 1/4”-20 and 3/8”-16 threads at both ends allowing them to be used as microphone booms as well as to support cameras.

The company is also introducing a new three-legged foot plate called Docz that is designed to add stability. Docz has an adjustable ball-and-socket fitting that can be used to alter the pressure required to move the monopod in the mount – to assist smooth panning and angling. The legs spread to 30cm/12in and fold upwards for storage.

Winner of the Lucie Technical Awards Tripod of the Year, British Tripod Manufacturer, 3 Legged Thing, announces the release of two new monopods, and a rugged foot stabiliser.

MagnetMod launches Kickstarter for new ‘revolutionary’ softbox system

MagnetMod has launched a new crowdfunding campaign for a trio of new products that makes up what it calls a ‘revolutionary new softbox system,’ The three new products are the MagShoe, MagRing and MagBox and as the naming scheme suggests, these products are made to work together to create an easy-to-use studio setup on the go.

The first piece of the puzzle is the MagRing. Designed to simplify softbox setup times, the MagRing is a magnet-based speedring that lets you mount one or two speedlights to a tripod in a matter of seconds. The MagRing is constructed of a metal base with two locking plastic doors to keep your speedlight(s) in place.

Next up is the MagBox, ‘the world’s first magnetic softbox,’ according to MagnetMod. Hyperbole aside, the MagBox is a 24-inch octabox that includes a built-in gel holder, a zipper for easily swapping out gels, and a unique set of diffusers to help you get just the look you’re going for.

Specifically, the MagBox includes a standard cloth diffusion panel that you’d find inside most soft boxes. However, it also includes what MagnetMod calls the FocusDiffuser. This internal diffuser is designed in such a way that it supposedly recreates the look of a gridded softbox or beauty dish without the light loss you’d get actually using a grid. Based on the GIF below, it appears to work as advertised.

If you’re worried about magnets being the only thing holding the MagBox to the MagRing, there’s not much reason for concern. As MagnetMod shows, the hold is strong enough that a small ‘Magnetic Field Disrupter’ is needed to release the MagBox from the MagRing. In the words of MagnetMod, ‘even if you tilt your softbox at a deep angle or (for some reason) shoot inside a wind tunnel, the MagBox and the MagRing are staying put.’

The last of the three new products is the MagShoe, ‘the baller coldshoe of the future.’ This redesigned coldshe attachment improves upon traditional mounts in almost every way imaginable. Speedlights lock into place with a simple twist of a lever and a squeeze trigger makes it easy to tilt back and forth to get the angle you want. It even has a built-in hole for mounting an umbrella.

Apple launches service program for MacBooks affected by keyboard issues, offers free repairs

Apple has launched a new service program for select MacBook and MacBook Pros potentially affected by a keyboard issue that results in sticky, unresponsive keys and repeated characters when typing.

The service program comes after three separate class action lawsuits were filed against the Cupertino company for issues related to MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards.

In a statement provided to 9to5Mac by an Apple spokesperson, the program ‘covers a small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models which may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors: letters or characters that repeat unexpectedly or don’t appear when pressed or keys that feel “sticky” or aren’t responding in a consistent manner.’

If believe your MacBook or MacBook Pro is being affected by the above issues, the first step is to check whether or not your model is part of the service program. To do this, go into the Apple (?) menu in the upper-left-hand corner of your Mac and select ‘About This Mac.’ Below are the eligible models:

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-­inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12­-inch, Early 2016)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-­inch, 2017)

Before any repairs are made, Apple will verify whether anything needs to be fixed. If it does, Apple will ‘service [the] eligible MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards, free of charge.’ The repairs will consist of either replacing the affected keys or potentially replacing the keyboard as a whole if required.

Microsoft launches AI-powered Bing Visual Search

Microsoft today announced a new AI-powered Visual Search function for its Bing search engine that will pretty much directly compete with Google Lens. Visual Search will let users search the web and shop online through pictures they have taken or selected from their camera roll.

For example, you can find out more about a landmark or flower by capturing it through the Bing app or uploading it from your device memory. Visual Search will then identify the object in question and provide web links you can explore further.

In the same way, you can shop for fashion items or furniture. If you see an object you like, take or upload a photo of it and the system will reply with shopping options and pricing for similar-looking items.

The Bing team says Visual Search will be continuously improved and expanded but the current version is available today in the Bing app for iOS and Android as well as Microsoft Launcher and the Microsoft Edge browser for Android. It’ll also be soon available in Microsoft Edge for iOS and on Bing.com.

Lomography Diana Instant Square Camera launches on Kickstarter

Lomography is crowdfunding its latest film camera, the Diana Instant Square. According to the company, this is the first Instax-compatible camera with a hot-shoe mount and support for interchangeable lenses. Lomography designed this model to work with any of the lenses compatible with the Diana F+, as well as Fujifilm Instax Square film packs.

The new Diana Instant Square camera features a selfie mirror, detachable viewfinder, film counter, an unlimited multiple exposure mode, a bulb mode for keeping the shutter open, adjustable aperture (F11, F19, F32), and an “instinctive zone-focusing system” that toggles between 1 – 2m / 3.3 – 6.6ft, 2 – 4m / 6.6 – 13ft, and 4m/13ft to infinity. A wide variety of flashes can be used with the hot-shoe mount.

Buyers have the following lens choices:

  • 20mm fisheye
  • 38mm super-wide-angle
  • 55mm wide-angle (+ close-up attachment)
  • 75mm kit lens
  • 110mm telephoto

Lomography is currently funding the Diana Instant Square camera on Kickstarter, where it is offering a single Classic unit for pledges of at least $ 69 USD, which is 30% off the anticipated retail price. The company is also offering a Special Edition of the instant camera for pledges of at least $ 77 USD. Shipping for backers is expected to start in December for Classic units and January 2019 for Special units.
