Polaroid launches Mint digital instant camera and mobile printer

Polaroid has launched the Mint 2-in-1 digital instant camera at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The Mint camera (not to be confused with the Instax-mini-compatible Mint InstantFlex TL70) comes with a 16MP image sensor, a microSD-slot for cards of up to 256GB capacity, a built-in selfie mirror, and a self-timer. A smartphone-like LED-flash is on board as well.

Polaroid says the camera “makes it easier than ever to capture and print instant photos that last a lifetime” and the built-in printer, which uses the inkless ZINK-technology can produce color, black-and-white or sepia prints in less than a minute. Before printing, users have the option of adding a frame to the image. The Polaroid Mint instant camera is available in black, white, red, blue and yellow and will set you back $ 99.99.

The Mint Instant Digital Pocket printer is Polaroid’s second new product at the trade show and meant to be used in conjunction with mobile devices. The pocket-sized printer uses the same ZINK technology as the Mint camera and lets you print any photo from your smartphone or tablet via the Polaroid Mint app and a bluetooth connection. The app features many common editing functions, including filters, frames and stickers.

The printer can be charged via a USB port and is the battery is good for 50 prints. The Polaroid Mint printer is available in black, white, red, blue and yellow and retails at $ 129.99. More information on the Mint camera and printer is available on the Polaroid website.

Sony launches new line of rugged SD memory cards

Sony today announced its SF-G series TOUGH specification UHS-II SD cards. The new memory cards are targeted at “photographers who are reliant upon their photographs remaining safe when their SD cards are removed from the camera” and combine ruggedness with fast read/write speeds.

The SF-G cards are bend proof to 180N, drop-proof to 5 meters, waterproof with an IPX8 rating and dustproof with an IP6X rating. To achieve these characteristics the cards feature a one-piece molding structure and a ribless and switchless design. In addition, they are X-ray proof, magnet proof, anti-static and temperature proof.

Top read speeds of up to 300MB/s and write speeds of up to 299MB/s should allow for swift burst shooting, and the cards also support the V90 video speed class, making them a good option for video shooters.

The SF-G cards come with Sony’s SD Scan Utility and File Rescue Software. They will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities and will launch in Europe from October. No information on availability in other regions has been provided yet. More information can be found on the Sony website.

OPPO R17 Pro launches with variable aperture 3D triple-camera

For many consumers outside of Asia OPPO might not be a household name, but the company has an impressive track record in mobile camera innovation.

With the just-announced R17 Pro OPPO is continuing its camera-focused strategy, offering, after the Huawei P20 Pro, the second triple-camera equipped phone in the market. That said, while the new OPPO has three cameras, the concept is different to Huawei’s.

In the P20 Pro a main camera is joined by a monochrome variant and a tele-module. On the R17 Plus you get a 12MP main wide angle camera with 1/2.55″ sensor and a Samsung-like F1.5/F2.4 variable aperture.

OPPO hasn’t been quite clear about what the secondary 20MP unit is used for but it’s likely a monochrome unit for improving noise, detail and digital zoom, just like the Huawei system. The third camera is a 3D depth sensor. So far we’ve only seen those at the front, enabling the 3D face unlock feature. On the R17 Pro it is used for 3D photo capturing and also allows you to use the phone as a game console and connect it to your TV.

The front camera offers a 25MP sensor and F2.0 aperture and other specs look promising as well. Qualcomm’s new upper-mid-range Snapdragon 710 chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (no microSD support unfortunately) and the 6.4″ AMOLED display comes with a 1080 x 2340 pixel resolution. The 3,700 mAh battery supports OPPO’s SuperVOOC charging technology and the company says you can achieve 40% charge in 10 minutes using the the provided charger.

The R17 Pro will start selling in China in October and will set you back CNY 4,299 ($ 625). At this point there is no information on availability and pricing in other regions.

Meike launches new 25mm T2.2 cine lens with ‘decent build quality’ for MFT camera systems

Hong Kong-based Meike has added to its collection of lenses with a new 25mm T2.2 cine lens for Micro Four Thirds camera systems.

The lens is entirely manual with a minimum focusing distance of 25cm/9.84in and a 77mm front filter thread. The optical construction includes ten elements in eight groups, which makes for a 49.7 degree angle of view.

The 25mm T2.2 cine lens weighs 560g/1.23lbs and features a pair of geared rings for changing its focus and aperture. Interestingly, even Meike seems hesitant on the quality of construction. In the product description on its Amazon page, Meike says the lens offers ‘decent build quality.’ Humble, sure, but not exactly reassuring.

Alongside the lens, which is currently available on Amazon for $ 340, is a rear lens cap, front lens cap, and a microfiber bag for safe transport.

Nikon Z-mount launches with 24-70mm F4, 50mm F1.8 and 35mm F1.8 lenses

You can’t launch a new camera system without lenses, and Nikon has three Nikkor Z-mount lenses available at and slightly after the launch of the Z 7 and Z 6. They include a 24-70mm F4 S, 50mm F1.8 S and 35mm F1.8 S (the ‘S’ represents the subtle silver ring around the lens, according to Nikon). The company is also developing a 58mm F0.95 Noct lens and has released a three-year roadmap of what’s next.

The 24-70mm F4 S features a buttonless collapsible design, 14 elements (which include ED aspherical, ED and aspherical) and both Nano Crystal and fluorine coatings. As with all of the new lenses, the 24-70 has electromagnetic aperture control, uses a stepping motor for autofocus and countermeasures to reduce focus breathing. A customizable control ring can be used to adjust focus, aperture and exposure compensation. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is 30cm (11.8″). The 24-70 will serve as a kit lens for both the Z 7 and Z6.

The Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S is one of two standard primes in the initial lineup. Of its 12 elements, two are ED and two are aspherical, and there’s a Nano Crystal Coat, as well. The lens has a nine-blade aperture, internal focusing and a minimum working distance of 40cm (15.7″).

The third of the initial group of lenses is the Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 S, which has 2 ED and 3 aspherical elements as well as a Nano Crystal Coat. This lens has a rear focusing system and a minimum distance of 25cm (9.8″).

EDT) – Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the release of three new lenses designed for the next-generation Nikon Z mount system’s full-frame (Nikon FX format) mirrorless cameras, for which a new larger-diameter mount has been adopted. The three new lenses are the standard zoom NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S, the wide-angle prime NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, and the standard prime NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S. NIKKOR Z lenses pursue a new dimension in optical performance, by taking advantage of the superior design flexibility made possible by the combination of the larger Z mount with its inner diameter of 55mm, and a short flange focal distance of 16mm. The lenses offer sharp resolution with both still-image and video recording, and are equipped with functions that include: compensation for focus breathing (the shifting of the angle of view when focus is adjusted), quiet operation, smooth exposure control, a control ring and performance that is well suited for video capture.

The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S, NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, and NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S are S-Line interchangeable lenses. The S-Line is a newly designated grade of NIKKOR Z lenses that adhere to a new benchmark in optical performance, realizing rendering performance that surpasses that of conventional f/4 standard zoom lenses and f/1.8 wide-angle or standard prime lenses. Development of the New NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens that Pursues Ultimate Optical Performance

The NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct that Nikon is currently developing will be a large aperture, standard 58mm prime focal-length, the fastest lens in Nikon’s history3, manual-focus lens positioned at the very top of the S-Line. It will stand to symbolize the Nikon Z mount system’s new dimension in optical performance.

It has inherited the design concept behind the original AI Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2, a standard prime lens released in 1977, named for “Nocturne” (a musical composition inspired by or evocative of the night), and was popular for its ability to finely reproduce point light sources as point images. This new Noct lens that is currently in development will take advantage of the advanced design flexibility afforded by the Z mount, pursuing ultimate optical performance. Development continues with the goals of achieving an extremely fast maximum aperture of f/0.95, offering the ultimate in NIKKOR rendering performance with superior detail and sharpness. Additionally, the goal is to achieve beautiful blur characteristics, or bokeh, with good continuity, and ensure outstanding point-image reproduction capabilities for more compelling, three-dimensional imaging.

The NIKKOR Z Lens Roadmap

Information in the roadmap, including release dates, are subject to change. Product names after the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct are not yet finalized.

Rokinon AF 14mm F2.8 launches in September for Nikon F-mount

Rokinon has announced that its ultra-wide AF 14mm F2.8 lens will arrive for Nikon F-mount in September. The lens, which is already available for Canon EF, is the maker’s first auto focus lens for Nikon. The model features 15 glass elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical lenses, four high refractive index lenses, and one extra-low dispersion lens. The glass has Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) anti-reflective coatings.

The lens features a Manual / Auto Focus switch and an aluminum alloy housing, as well as a 7.8″ / 0.20m minimum focusing distance, weather sealing, and a 16.7oz / 474 grams weight. According to Rokinon, the AF 14mm F2.8 “meets or exceeds the performance characteristics” of similar ultra-wide lenses.

The Rokinon AF 14mm F2.8 for Nikon F will be available in September for $ 799 USD.

Sony claims top spot in full-frame interchangeable lens camera market, launches ‘Be Alpha’ campaign

In a press release issued this morning, Sony announced it has sold more full-frame cameras than any other brand in the US over the past six months, measured both by units sold and by value.

Perhaps more impressively, the company is also celebrating occupying the top position in the overall mirrorless market, a spot it has owned for the past six years thanks to the huge success of the a6000, as well as sales of the a7 series.

That’s all good news for Sony, yes, but it’s probably no coincidence that Sony was the last brand to release a mass-market full frame camera. It’s been a year since Canon’s last entry in the category, and a similar amount of time since Nikon announced the D850. And either way, we don’t recommend getting too invested in brand market share, but that’s just us.

Sony’s also taking the opportunity to launch a brand new ‘Be Alpha’ campaign, which will comprise a number of in-person events in major cities, starting on August 19th in New York City to celebrate World Photography Day. The initiative also includes an ‘Alpha Female’ program, which will include grants, mentorship and events to address “the imaging industry’s well-documented diversity challenges.”

These strong results can be attributed to the company’s leadership in transitioning the market from older DSLR technology to next-generation mirrorless cameras.

Much of Sony’s recent success has been driven by sales of the acclaimed ?7R III and ?7 III models, as well as the rapid adoption of the ?9 camera amongst professional sports photographers and photojournalists. As a celebration of these historic achievements, Sony has announced the launch of its extensive “Be Alpha” campaign that will connect creators of all types with the brand and its ever-growing roster of talented photographers and videographers.

Sony’s “Be Alpha” movement will be headlined by a series of community events in major markets throughout North America in 2018 and beyond, beginning with the official launch event on August 19th, World Photography Day, in New York City. The campaign will encourage all creators to get involved by sharing their own “Be Alpha” content on all relevant social platforms while tagging #BeAlpha.

The “Be Alpha” campaign will also feature programs that are designed to foster growth in both the current and next generations of imaging professionals, the most notable of which being the flagship “Alpha Female” program. This multi-tiered, female exclusive program is Sony’s thoughtful response to the imaging industry’s well-documented diversity challenges. It will include a variety of grants and mentorship opportunities for female photographers and videographers, as well as the production of several large-scale industry events. 3 Legged Thing launches the affordable Patti tripod

British manufacturer 3 Legged Thing today launched a new affordable today. Despite an entry-level price point of $ 120, the company says its new Patti offers the same quality and versatility as the more expensive models in its Punks range.

A maximum payload of 10kg (22lbs) should be more than enough for most smaller DSLRs and mirrorless setups, and its ABS plastic flip leg locks instead of the more expensive models’ twist lock systems help keep the price down. The legs are made from aircraft grade magnesium.

The Patti features a removable and reversible single section center column, allowing for low angled shots and a minimum shooting height of 11cm (4.3″). Packed down the new model measures 45cm (17.7″) and extends to a maximum height of 1.63m (64″) when unfolded and set up.

The tripod is supplied with the company’s AirHead Mini head, a simplified version of its AirHead ball head variant. The latter comes with controls for the Arca Swiss style release plate as well as the ball head and panoramic rotation.

AirSelfie2 pocket-sized camera drone launches with slight improvements

AirSelfie2, an update to the original AirSelfie drone launched in late 2016, is now available for purchase. The new model, which was introduced during CES 2018, improves upon the original AirSelfie by increasing the camera resolution from 5MP to 12MP, including a 16GB integrated microSD card versus the original’s 4GB capacity, and increasing flight time by two minutes.

The AirSelfie2 features an anodized aluminum casing with overall dimensions slightly larger than a smartphone at 3.8″ x 2.8″ x 0.5″ / 9.7cm x 7cm / 1.3cm. The internal 400mAh battery provides up to five minutes of flight time per charge, with four turbo brushless fans providing lift. Users wirelessly control the miniature drone using a mobile app available on iOS and Android; range is vaguely stated as “over 60ft.”

The drone’s camera captures still images and Full HD videos with an 85-degree FOV. The company behind the device, AirSelfie Holdings, promises new features and “experiences” delivered to AirSelfie2 drone owners via future updates. The drone is available from AirSelfie and select online retailers in gold, rose gold, black, and silver colors for $ 200.

Cactus launches bare bulb wireless monolight on Kickstarter

Lighting manufacturer Cactus has officially launched its RQ250 bare bulb wireless TTL flash unit on the Kickstarter crowd funding website. Plans for the flash were originally announced at the beginning of the year, and now the company says it will be ready for delivery in October.

The head offers a maximum output of 250Ws and a recycle time of 1.1 seconds at full power

The RQ250 is ‘barely larger than a speedlight’ according to the manufacturer but offers the flexibility of a studio head. It can be controlled wirelessly via the Cactus V6 II radio transceiver system and allows TTL metering across the six main camera brands. Those who prefer manual control can adjust it in 0.1EV steps from full power down to 1/512th power, while the 4-cell lithium ion rechargeable battery provides 520 full-power bursts per charge. The head offers a maximum output of 250Ws and a recycle time of 1.1 seconds at full power. An integrated fan is designed to maintain a decent temperature in the head during intensive shoots, and the aluminum reflector helps by dissipating heat away from the body.

A range of modifiers will be available that connect to the head with via a twist lock bayonet system. The bayonet-mount reflector has a magnetic rim which allows further modifiers to be switched very quickly. The range that can be used will include softboxes, umbrellas and a reflector, as well as a set of magnetic gel holders, a snoot, a diffuser dome and barn doors. Initially it was said that the head would have a Bowens S-Mount bayonet, but it seems Cactus has changed this to its own mount but will offer an optional Bowens S-Mount adapter.

The head can be used in two modes – Color or Speed. Color aims to produce consistent color balance as output varies, while Speed is designed for short flash duration to freeze motion in the image. High speed sync is also available.

Additional Speedlights can be used in one of four groups with the RQ250, and wireless control can be achieved with 2.4Ghz radio or optical slave settings.

The Cactus RQ250 is designed and assembled in Hong Kong, measures 194mm x 80mm x 80mm and weighs 1235g (2.7 lb) with the battery, reflector and tube loaded. It will cost $ 699 but can be snapped up for an early bird price of around $ 550 / £430 on Kickstarter.

Small but Powerful

The RQ250 is so compact it can sit on the palm of your hand. Barely larger than a speedlight, it comes with 250Ws of power and a range of 10 stops, from 1/512 to full power.

Uni-body Design

What makes the RQ250 unique is its special flash head design. The 63-degree optical optimized reflector, which is equivalent to speedlight zoom setting of 35mm, not only makes it good to shoot with on its own, but it is also a perfect match with a lighting umbrella.

Inside the flash head sits Cactus TubeOneTM, the proprietary bare bulb that can be put instantly in a softbox. Coupled with the aluminium flash reflector and Cactus bayonet mount, changing instantly from a round head diffusion disc flash to bare-bulb requires only one click.

Magnetic Clip-on Modifier System Kit

With built-in magnets on the RQ250’s reflector head, clip-on light modifiers can be snapped into place and easily stacked to create the desired lighting effect. The optional kit to the RQ250 includes a barn door, a colour gel set, a diffuser dome, a honeycomb, and a snoot.

Instant Recharge and Fast Recycling Time

The RQ250 maximizes the power of its four-cell battery pack using our proprietary UltroEDTM transformer, which recycles in 1.1 seconds and fires a whopping 520 full power flashes on a single charge.

The RQ250 is also the only monolight of its size equipped with an integrated cooling fan and thermal sensors that allow optimal cooling in any environment photographers are working in. Together with the aluminium flash reflector that dissipates heat, the RQ250 can take a beating and still not overheat.

Colour Mode and Speed Mode

With colour mode on, the RQ250 is able to produce consistent colour temperatures across the entire 10-stop power range and over hundreds of shots, saving photographers a tremendous amount of time during post-editing.

In speed mode, lightning fast flash duration at low power outputs allows photographers to freeze the fastest of movements. With power adjustment steps as fine as 0.1EV, the 10-stop power range from 1/512 to 1/1 enables full manipulation of the RQ250 power band.

TTL on Eight (8) Camera Brands

The RQ250 is a wireless TTL monolight for Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony when triggered by a Cactus V6 II or V6 IIs. It supports TTL, high-speed sync (HSS/FP) as well as manual power control and works simultaneously with any portable flashes compatible with the Cactus V6 II or V6 IIs.

Modelling Light and AF-assist

A modelling light has always been an exclusive feature in professional studio lights, but we managed to put one in the small body of the RQ250. The RQ250 not only has one, but it has 20W, making it powerful enough to light any subject and allowing photographers to work freely in any environment. The modelling light can be used as an AF-assist to help photographers achieve accurate and efficient focus.
