Insta360 launches desktop software for One X 360-degree camera

Insta360 has officially launched Insta360 Studio for ONE X, a desktop editing application for its ONE X 360-degree camera. The software had previously been available as a beta version but is now in full production, giving One X users a new reliable editing option in addition to the Android and iOS mobile apps.

Insta360 Studio for One X version 3.2.1 has been designed for editing the One X 5.7K 360-degree footage and comes with a comprehensive editing feature set, including keyframes for creating cinematic pans, real-time FlowState Stabilization for smooth and stable footage, preset perspectives, such as Tiny Planet, Crystal Ball or Natural View, and support for the MP4 file format.

Panasonic launches 50mm F1.4, 70-200 F4 OIS and 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS full-frame lenses

Panasonic has launched a trio of Lumix S lenses alongside its S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras. The three new lenses are a 50mm F1.4 – Panasonic’s ‘reference lens’, a 70-200 F4 OIS and a versatile 24-105mm F4 OIS Macro, which will serve as the kit lens for both cameras.

The Lumix S Pro 50mm F1.4 features 13 elements – two aspherical and three ED – and an 11-blade aperture. Panasonic claims that one of the aspherical elements is among the largest ever created, with a diameter of over 40mm. The lens has two focus motors – linear and stepping – designed to operate with 480 fps sensor readout. Panasonic says that the lens has been designed for smooth exposure changes with minimal focus breathing for video capture.

The Lumix S Pro 70-200 F4 OIS’s stabilization works in conjunction with the S1/S1R’s in-body IS to provide up to 6.5 stops of shake reduction. It has 23 elements, including aspherical, UHR, UED and ED. It uses a linear motor with a 480 fps AF control. As with the 50mm F1.4, the 70-200 is weather-sealed, has a focus clutch and is designed to reduce focus breathing.

Finally, there’s the Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS, which will serve as the kit lens for both the S1 and S1R. It too is stabilized, and has one ED, two aspherical ED, two aspherical and three ED elements. The 24-105 uses a linear motor, again with 480 fps AF control. The minimal focus distance on this general-purpose lens is 0.3m, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x.

All three lenses are dust and moisture-sealed, and the two ‘S Pro’ models include a focus clutch for quick switching between auto and manual focus.

The three new lenses will ship in early April. The 50mm F1.4 is priced at $ 2299, the 70-200 F4 at $ 1699 and the 24-105mm F4 at $ 1299. Buying the S1/S1R kit effectively lowers the price of the 24-105mm F4 to $ 899.

LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 (S-X50)

The LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 is a large-aperture fixed focal length LUMIX S PRO lens that is the core of all LUMIX S Series lenses. Ensuring versatile use with its 50mm focal length and F1.4 high speed, the LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 boasts stunningly high resolution and a descriptive performance from the center to the corners of the image despite its large aperture. It provides smooth defocus gradation from the focus peak to the neighboring area of the image. It also describes the point light sources in the background as impressive, beautiful bokeh. The optical performance of this LUMIX S PRO lens is outstandingly high to clear stringent LEICA standards.

Comprising 13 lenses in 11 groups, the use of 2 aspherical lenses and 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses effectively suppresses both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Kenko launches new premium Teleplus HD Pro converters

Optics and accessories manufacturer Kenko has announced a new pair of teleconverters. The new models, which are a part of Kenko’s Teleplus HD Pro series, are a 1.4x and 2x converter designed for Nikon F and Canon EF full frame cameras and lenses.

Kenko says the optical construction of the converters has been redesigned and the converters now contain more elements and improved coatings to reduce internal reflections.

Contacts on the converters support communication between the camera and the mounted lens so EXIF data can take into account the effect of the converters when the focal length and aperture values are recorded.

Available now, the Kenko Teleplus HD Pro converters will cost $ 249/£219 (1.4x) and $ 299/£269 (2x). For more information see the Kenko website.

Apple launches its 2019 ‘Shot on iPhone’ contest, but don’t forget to read the fine print

Apple is launching its 2019 ‘Shot on iPhone’ photo contest by inviting iPhone photographers to submit their best photographs shot on an Apple device. Photos can be submitted from now to February 7th and will be judged by an impressive panel including photographer Pete Souza and Annet de Graaf, as well as Apple’s VP of Marketing Phil Schiller and head of camera software team Jon McCormack. Apple says winning images will be featured on billboards in select cities, Apple retail stores and online.

To participate you can post images on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #ShotOniPhone. In the image caption you should note which iPhone model it was captured with. Alternatively images can be submitted by emailing them in full resolution to shotoniphone@apple.com with the file format ‘firstname_lastname_iphonemodel.’ Photos can be straight out of the camera or edited.

If you’re thinking about submitting your photos you should probably have a look at official rules on the Apple website, to make sure you know what participation in the contest means for your images. Photographers are essentially handing over exclusive commercial ownership of their images in exchange for photo credit. In a post on Reddit, photographer Trevor Mahlmann shared his thoughts on the campaign and the issues he noticed with the fine print.

In the fine print Apple says: ‘you retain your rights to your photograph; however, by submitting your photo, you grant Apple a royalty-free, world-wide, irrevocable, non-exclusive license for one year to use, modify, publish, display, distribute, create derivative works from and reproduce the photo on Apple Newsroom, apple.com, Twitter, Instagram, in Apple retail stores, Weibo, WeChat, on billboards and any Apple internal exhibitions. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit.’

The company goes on to say: ‘If your photo is selected to be featured on a billboard, you further agree to grant Apple exclusive commercial use of the photo for the life of the license.’

Samsung launches 1/3.4″ 20MP sensor for use in smartphone front cameras and tele modules

Smartphone camera technology is moving faster than ever and in recent times we have seen two new developments on a variety of mid-range and high-end devices. More and more rear cameras come with secondary modules with longer focal lengths, usually a 2 or 3x zoom factor when compared to the primary shooter. At the front the latest trend are “hole punch” cameras that are pretty much hidden underneath the display and only peek through a tiny hole.

Both these trends require small sensors to enable designers and engineers to maintain the slim form factors of current premium devices. Samsung has today launched its new ISOCELL Slim 3T2 20MP 1/3.4″ sensor which comes with a 0.8?m pixel pitch and is Samsung’s smallest 20MP sensor, making it ideal for such applications.

‘The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is our smallest and most versatile 20Mp image sensor that helps mobile device manufacturers bring differentiated consumer value not only in camera performance but also in features including hardware design,” said Jinhyun Kwon, vice president of System LSI sensor marketing at Samsung Electronics. “As the demand for advanced imaging capabilities in mobile devices continue to grow, we will keep pushing the limits in image sensor technologies for richer user experiences.’

In addition to tiny dimensions the new sensor offers, when used in front facing cameras, Samsung’s Tetracell technology, which merges four pixels to work as one for brighter exposures and less noise in low light conditions. Samsung claims Tetracell increases the color filter array’s light sensitivity to that of a 1.6?m-pixel image sensor at 5MP resolution.

For applications in rear cameras, for example in a tele-module, the sensor uses an RGB color filter array instead of Tetracell. Samsung says the sensor’s small dimensions reduce the height of the tele-camera module by around seven percent when compared to the company’s current 1/3-inch 20MP imagers. Compared to the existing 13MP sensor with the same module height, the 3T2 offers, thanks to the higher pixel count, better performance when digital zoom is thrown into the mix.

The Samsung ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is expected to be in mass production in the first quarter of this year.

OWC Mercury Helios FX 650 eGPU chassis launches with macOS, Windows support

OWC has launched Mercury Helios FX 650, an external GPU (eGPU) chassis compatible with macOS and Windows computers with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. As with the Blackmagic eGPU and similar models, the new Mercury Helios FX 650 enables professionals to increase the graphics processing power of their desktop or laptop computers.

The Helios FX 650, which is made from recyclable materials, features a large temperature-controlled fan with variable speed support, the promise of quiet operation, an upgraded 650w power supply capable of providing 100w charging power to a connected computer, and support for most Thunderbolt-compatible GPUs.

The new OWC eGPU weighs 3kg / 7lbs and measures 20 x 34 x 18.5cm 7.9 x 13.4 x 7.3in. Unlike select competing models that have built-in GPUs and sealed designs, the Mercury Helios 650 can be upgraded to newer, faster GPUs in the future to meet evolving needs. The eGPU chassis is available now from MacSales for $ 399 USD.

X-Rite launches beta version of its custom ICC profiling tool with Capture One support

Color management and measurement technology company X-Rite has announced a new public beta release of ColorChecker Camera Calibration software version 1.2. This pre-release update includes support for Phase One’s Capture One software with TIFF file support, a first for X-Rite’s custom profiling tool.

X-Rite has been working on adding Capture One support to its custom camera profiling software for some time now and it’s finally here — at least in beta form. As is currently possible in the Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw version of the ColorChecker Camera Calibration software, v1.2 adds the ability to create custom ICC profiles in Capture One with various camera, lens and lighting combinations.

X-Rite has created a helpful how-to video, embedded below, that runs through the process of creating a custom ICC profile using Camera Calibration software v1.2. There’s also a PDF version available.

To download the public beta release, head over to X-Rite’s download page. Keep in mind this is a pre-release program, so there will likely be a few bugs here and there. X-Rite requests users submit details when an error occurs to help further development.

X-Rite also notes a known issue with the Windows version of the ColorChecker Camera Calibration software wherein ‘the software cannot process a TIFF file larger than 150 megabytes.’ X-Rite suggests cropping or reducing the resolution if users run into this issue and notes the issue is currently being addressed.

Longsys launches Lexar-branded 1TB SDXC card

Longsys, under the Lexar brand name, has announced the Lexar Professional 633x SDXC UHS-I card with 1TB of storage.

The Class 10 UHS-I card has a theoretical maximum read speed up to 95MB/s and write speed up to 70MB/s, but it’s only guaranteed a sustained write speed of 30MB/s as noted by the V30/U3 rating. This means the write speeds might peak at 70MB/s, but the card certainly can’t sustain them, otherwise it’d be labelled as a V60 card.

The card, which is also available in sizes down to 16GB, is capable of operating from 0° to 70° C (32° to 158°F) and being stored from -25° to 85° C (-13° to 185°F) in humidity levels between 5 and 95 percent. Each card comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

The 1TB Lexar Professional 633x SDXC UHS-I card is available now and retails for $ 499.99.

Black Eye launches its 4th-gen universal Pro mobile lenses in North America

European mobile camera lens company Black Eye has announced the launch of its fourth-generation universal Pro lenses for smartphones in North America. As of now, Black Eye’s portfolio features nine mobile lenses across three product series, as well as a new Travel Kit G4, an upcoming Pro Kit G4 bundle and new cases for the iPhone 7 and later.

Black Eye was founded by professional photographer Arto Ekman and professional snowboarders Fredu Sirviö and Eero Ettala. The company’s mobile lenses center around a simple universal attachment system that can be clipped onto most smartphones and similar mobile devices, such a laptop’s webcam.

Black Eye’s most recent product lineup includes the Pro-series Portrait Tele G4, Cinema Wide G4, and Fisheye G4 lenses, as well as the regular wide, macro and combo G4 lenses. The company also recently launched the Travel Kit G4, a bundle featuring a case and the Wide G4, Macro G4 and Pro Portrait Tele G4 lenses.

In addition to its existing products, Black Eye will release a new Pro Kit G4 in the first quarter of 2019. This kit features all three Pro-series G4 mobile lenses and a durable case for $ 249.99 USD. In Q1 2019, Black Eye will also release protective iPhone cases for the iPhone 7 and later models for $ 19.99 USD.

DJI launches ‘Pro’ website for creative photographers, videographers

In September, DJI introduced a new Pro brand targeted at professional photographers and videographers. Details about the brand were slim when it was first revealed, but the company is back with more information on its newly launched DJI Pro website.

‘DJI Pro is dedicated to professionals using DJI’s advanced aerial and gimbal technologies, such as the Inspire and the Ronin series,’ the company said in a statement today.

The new DJI Pro website offers content across five categories, including product education, product information, examples of DJI’s hardware being used on film sets, information on workshops and events and the DJI Masters Program. Under the program, users are given the opportunity to learn from experts, including Tom Fitz, Hoonigan Media Machine, and Rufus Blackwell.

Ti Xie, DJI’s director of public relations had the following to say about the new website and platform:

Since the creation of the first Phantom to the Inspire and Ronin series, DJI has been dedicated to creating intuitive tools for every level of filmmaker. With the launch of the DJI Pro website, we now have a dedicated location where customers can learn about the application of our professional products and we also provide a learning-based platform for users to receive the latest information. We will continue to make more reliable, industry-leading tools for our growing customer base.
