SmallHD launches Focus 7, a $699 seven-inch touchscreen monitor

SmallHD has launched Focus 7, a new seven-inch on-camera model that features a 1000 nit display and which offers dual battery slots. The Focus 7 has a 1920×1200 pixel resolution which equates to 323 pixels per inch of the 16×9 display, and can accept footage of up to 4K in 30p.

Designed with a pair of mounts for Sony L-Type batteries and the ability to power the camera via an optional battery adapter cable, the Focus 7 allows batteries to be swapped out during recording. The monitor offers full size HDMI input, a 3.5mm headphone socket and SD card storage. SmallHD says the screen has a viewing angle of 160-degrees, so it is able to be comfortably used by more than one person at a time.

The monitor runs the company’s OS3 software that allows users to customise tools, pinch to zoom, to desqueeze anamorphic footage and view waveform, vectorscope and histogram displays. LUTs can be loaded via the SD card slot or the USB port.

LG launches triple-camera models V50 ThinQ 5G and G8 ThinQ

LG V50 ThinQ 5G

In previous years LG unveiled its G-series smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and the V-series models at IFA in Berlin. For 2019 the Korean manufacturer has decided to launch both new models at the show in the capital of Catalonia .

The biggest news on the V50 ThinQ 5G are the 5G-connectivity and the new Snapdragon 855 chipset. In most other respects the latest V-model has a lot of similarities with its predecessor V40 ThinQ.

At least on paper camera specifications are identical. The V50 ThinQ 5G features a triple-camera setup on the back, combining a 12MP primary camera with F1.5 aperture with a 12MP/F2.4 tele and 16MP/F1.9 super-wide-angle. In video mode the LG can shoot at 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second. It also features all the manual video controls of the previous model. We quite liked the camera when shooting with the V40 ThinQ, which is still a pretty new device, so it seems LG did not see the need to overhaul the camera department for this new release.

The new model also comes with the same 6.4-inch 3120 x 1440 pixel OLED FullVision display as the previous generation and a dual-front camera with super-wide-angle and 8/5MP resolution. At 4,000mAh the battery is 20 percent larger, though, and audiophiles will appreciate the stereo speakers and 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, all built into a MIL-STD 810G compliant body.

LG G8 ThinQ

The G8 ThinQ features the same Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM and camera specs as the V50 but has to make do without a 5G modem and a smaller 6.1-inch 3120 x 1440 pixel OLED display and 3,500mAh battery.

There is also a G8s ThinQ with a slightly larger 6.2-inch OLED display with lower 2248 x 1080px resolution. In the camera module it swaps the 16MP super-wide-angle for a 13MP variant but otherwise specs are pretty similar to the regular G8. Both G8 models come with an 8MP front camera and a secondary time-of-flight 3D camera for face unlocking. No pricing information for the new models has been released yet.

Xiaomi launches Mi 9 smartphone with triple camera, up to 8GB of RAM

We are getting close to the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which means we should see a number of high-profile mobile device launches over the coming days. Today Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has thrown the first punch by launching its new Mi 9 flagship smartphone and, at least on paper, the new Xiaomi looks like an enticing option for smartphone photographers.

The Mi 9’s triple-cam setup is built around an 48MP Sony IMX586 1/2″ sensor which comes with a quad-bayer filter and produces 12MP image output. The lens offers an F1.75 aperture and 26mm equivalent focal length.

The primary module is joined by an ultra-wide-angle with 17mm equivalent focal length and F2.2 aperture. It uses a 16MP 1/3″ Sony IMX481 sensor. The tele offers a 2x magnification for a 50mm equivalent focal length and captures image information on a 12MP 1/3.4″ Samsung S5K3M5 sensor with 1.0µm pixels and a F2.2 aperture.

A combination of PDAF and laser is used for focusing and for very dim conditions a LED flash is on board. By default the Mi 9 records 4K video at 30 frames per second but the frame rate can be increased to 60 fps.

Images can be viewed and edited on a 6.39″ AMOLED display with 1080p+ resolution and hidden in a display notch you’ll find the 20MP front camera with F2.0 aperture which in some regions will use artificial intelligence to power a face-unlock function.

An in-display fingerprint reader and fast charging for the 3,300mAh battery are on board as well and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chipset is paired with 6GB of RAM to power the Android operating system. Photos and videos can be stored on 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

Pricing starts at approximately $ 455 for the 6/128GB version. The 8/128GB variant will set you back approximately $ 490. No information on exact pricing and availability outside China has been released yet.

Kosmo Foto launches Mono 120 black-and-white film, now available for pre-order

Kosmo Foto has launched pre-orders for its Mono film in 120 format, adding the new product alongside the 35mm version launched in 2017. According to the company, the first batch of Mono 120 has entered production and will be sold exclusively through the Kosmo Foto shop. Future batches of the film will be available through Kosmo’s retailers and distributors, as well.

In its announcement today, the company explained:

Mono has proven to be really popular with film photographers – it’s now stocked in photography shops all over the world, and been bought by photographers from Greenland to Greece and Costa Rica to the Czech Republic.

Not everyone, however, shoots 35mm film. The resurgence that film has enjoyed over the last few years has also seen many people shooting on medium format cameras from humble Holgas through to Hasselblads.

So Kosmo Foto is very pleased to be able to say that Kosmo Foto Mono 120 is now available to pre-order.

According to Kosmo Foto, Mono features a traditional black-and-white chemistry that can be developed using Tetanal, Rodinal, Perceptol, and similar formulations, but it can’t be developed by mini-labs with only C41 processing. Mono 120 is suitable for use in a variety of shooting conditions, including both sunny and overcast environments.

Kosmo Foto requires pre-order customers to purchase at least three, but no more than 10, rolls of Mono 120 when ordering. Each roll costs £4.50 / $ 5.80 and is available now through the Kosmo Foto store; the company expects its first batch to be ready for shipment in May.

Three Legged Thing launches ‘Ellie,’ a versatile L-bracket for modern camera systems

Tripod manufacturer Three Legged Thing has developed a new L-bracket that’s designed to be adaptable to fit a wider range of cameras, and which will allow users to mount their camera in a variety of ways. Called Ellie, the bracket features sliding bars that allow size adjustment, dual Arca-Swiss mounting platforms and additional threads for attaching accessories such as microphones.

Ellie is made from ‘aerospace grade magnesium alloy’ and uses a pair of stainless steel sliding bars that allow users to tailor the length of the baseplate to suit the size of the camera. Two screw threads on the base offer a choice of mounting positions, while an opening in the construction provides space and access when L-shaped cables need to be connected to ports on the camera body.

As the position of these cable ports varies from one model to the next the bracket allows four mounting configurations to ensure the cut away section will correspond with ports in as many cameras as possible.

The bracket can be dissembled so the base doubles as a quick release plate, and both ends of the vertical standard feature two screw threads that will accept macro arms, flash attachments or audio equipment.

Ellie will be available in anodised copper or metallic slate grey color options in mid-March and will cost £64.99 / $ 69.99.

The rear edge of the base is sloped to better enable screen access.

Glyph launches new Atom NVMe SSD and Thunderbolt 3 dock with dual 4K display support

Glyph Production Technology has introduced its new Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Atom NVMe SSD products, enabling graphics professionals to expand the number of ports and storage available on their MacBook Pro or any other computer with Thunderbolt 3 support.

The new Glyph Thunderbolt 3 dock connects to a laptop via its USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, enabling the user to both charge their device and transmit data using a single cable. The dock features an SD UHS-II card slot, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, as well as one USB-C 3.1 Gen2 port.

The model also offers separate audio jacks for microphone out and audio out, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and support for either one 5K display at 60Hz or two 4K displays at 60Hz. Users can also upgrade an NVMe SSD drive in a dedicated slot; the dock supports read and write speeds up to 1500MB/s.

Datacolor launches SpyderX, its fastest and most accurate color calibration tool to date

Color management solutions company Datacolor has announced SpyderX, its fastest and easiest to use monitor color calibration tool to date.

The new tool has been redesigned from the ground up with a new color engine ‘that provides significantly increased color accuracy and low light capabilities,’ according to Datacolor.

One of the standout improvements is the decrease in time it takes to calibrate a monitor or projector. Compared to the five minutes previous Datacolor tools required to calibrate a device, the new SpyderX tool takes less than two minutes once the appropriate software is downloaded.

CineStill launches powdered versions of its B&W and color film development kits

CineStill has released powder-based versions of its Df96 monochrome and C-41 color film development kits. The new kits only require a bit of distilled water to bring them to life and make both storing and shipping easier for both retailers and consumers.

Unlike liquid chemicals, which are often limited in shipping options due to weight and various hazardous materials restrictions, powdered chemistry isn’t nearly as restricted. This means these new kits will be more affordable to ship — up to 75% cheaper according to CineStill — and more easily accessible outside of mainland United States and Europe with better shipping times, due to the ability to ship in First-Class and Priority envelopes, which aren’t as regulated for transportation.

The chemicals are identical to their liquid counterparts once mixed according to the instructions. The kits have an ‘indefinite’ shelf-life according to CineStill, until mixed, after which the chemicals should be good for up to one year in a sealed bottle. The Df96 development kit is rated for use with 16 rolls of monochrome film while the Cs41 development kit is rated for 24 rolls of color film.

Beyond saving on shipping, the price of the kits themselves are more affordable. The Df96 monochrome development kit costs $ 16.99, while the Cs41 color development kit costs $ 24.99, $ 3 and $ 1 cheaper than the liquid versions, respectively.

Leica launches limited edition versions of three classic M lenses

Limited edition versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH, Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 and Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH lenses have been announced for the Leica M rangerfinder series, with alternative finishes, red markings and different materials setting them out from the normal production versions.

Each of the limited editions has its distance or aperture markings picked out in red paint, and each comes in a different paint or finish to the standard models.

The lens with the most unique features is the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 which comes in black chrome, and substitutes the regular focusing ring for a ‘scalloped’ version that the company says echoes the design of the 1956 model. There is a lot of brass too, with the components of the barrel made in brass, as is the lens hood and the lens cap.

The Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 will come in a black matt paint that’s especially hard wearing, according to Leica, making it as tough as the black chrome finishes. The Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 will come in a silver anodized finish.

Each of the lenses will be technically identical to the standard production models, just with these cosmetic differences. There will only be 700 of the 50mm lens, 500 of the 28mm F5.6 and 300 of the 28mm F1.4 – and all will be available by the end of the month.

Leica Camera AG presents three new design options in the Leica M-Lens portfolio.

Leica Camera AG presents new design versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH., Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 and Leica Summilux- M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH. lenses for the Leica M-System. The special series of the three lenses are distinguished by unique design highlights and are being offered in a limited number of examples. The performance and technical specifications of the lenses are otherwise identical to those of the serial production products.

The new series of lenses includes a black chrome version of the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH. standard lens. In comparison to the serial production lens, this design alternative features a characteristically scalloped focusing ring that recalls the appearance of the Summicron 50 mm F2 (II) from 1956. The components of the barrel of this special series are machined from brass. The engravings for the focal length and the distances in feet are picked out in red. The lens is supplied complete with a classic, round brass lens hood engraved with ‘Made in Germany’ and a lens cap turned from solid brass. The edition of the lens in this design version is strictly limited to 700 examples. The APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH. in black chrome is available from 21 February.

The second special series presents a version of the Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 in matt black paint finish, a lens from the classic line-up of Leica M-Lenses. The Summaron-M is modelled on a screw mount lens produced at the Leitz factory in Wetzlar from 1955 to 1963. With a length of less than 2 centimetres, this extremely compact wide-angle lens is the smallest lens of the M-System lens portfolio. The special paint used for this special series is particularly resistant to wear and lends the lens an appearance almost identical to that of the classic black chrome finishes.

A further feature of the new lens is the engraving of the aperture scale visible from the front, with numbers now picked out in red. This edition of the Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 in matt black paint is limited to 500 examples for the global market. The lenses will be on sale from 28 February.

The third design option, the Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH. in a silver anodised version, offers owners of Leica M-Cameras in silver a further high-performance lens that matches the finish of their cameras. This fast wide-angle lens is an ideal companion for reportage photography and delivers impressive imaging performance in all lighting situations. The lens with the alternative finish will be on sale from 28 February in a limited edition of 300 examples.
