Tiffen launches ND/PL filter kits for DJI Osmo Pocket camera

Tiffen has introduced a pair of filter kits for videographers using the DJI Osmo Pocket that the company says help to create a more cinematic look to the footage recorded with the device. The kits consist of neutral density filters to control the shutter speed of the Osmo and polarisers to assist with color saturation.

A three-filter kit has ND4, ND8 and ND16 filters, each with a polariser built in, while the six-filter kit offers the same three ND/PL filters minus the polarising element.

Tiffen says the filters are coated to prevent moisture sticking to the surface and to protect against reflections and scratches. The optical glass has a 10-year warranty, and a metal case is provided to store them in.

The 3-filter Osmo Pocket Filter Kit costs $ 49.99 while the 6-filter kit is $ 79.99. For more information see the Tiffen website.

Lexar launches trio of ultra-compact SSD drives

Lexar has announced the SL100 Pro Portable SSD lineup, a trio of compact solid state drives that offer USB 3.1 speeds in a tiny, durable form factor.

The SSD, which weighs just 70.5g / 0.155lbs and measures in at a 73.4mm x 55mm / 2.89in x 2.17in, features a USB-C connection that offers read speeds up to 950MBps and write speeds up to 900MBps. Although the SSD isn’t ruggedized, it is protected against rough vibrations and has temperatures, with an operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Lexar includes its DataVault Lite software to keep files onboard the SSD safe throws in a three-year limited warranty for good measure.

The Lexar SL100 Pro Portable SSD comes in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and is available for purchase at B&H for $ 87.99, $ 134.99 and $ 239.99, respectively.

Mastin Labs’ Kodak Everyday Original Styles Pack launches for Capture One

Mastin Labs, the company behind a number of film emulation style packs and the Filmborn smartphone app, has launched its Kodak Everyday Original Styles Pack on Capture One. Until now, Mastin Labs’ film emulation was only available for Adobe programs; this is the first time Mastin Labs has made its emulation presets available for Capture One, the photo editing software from Phase One.

The Kodak Everyday Original Styles Pack supports Capture One 11 and later. Customers get access to three styles in this pack: Kodak Ektar 100, Gold 200, and Tri-X 400. A number of tone profiles and custom white balance options join the styles, as well as 35mm and medium format grain settings. The company claims its style pack can recreate the ‘micro-contrast’ appearance of real film.

Kirk Mastin, photographer and founder of Mastin Labs, introduced the new Capture One pack in an announcement video that provides customers with a quick look at the emulations. Capture One customers can purchase the Kodak Everyday Original from Mastin Labs now for $ 99.

Canon launches its Sumire Prime collection with seven PL-mount cinema lenses

Canon has announced the Sumire Prime collection, a set of seven Canon cinema lenses that use the PL-mount — a first for Canon, who has previously only ever offered its cinema primes in its own EF-mount.

The Sumire Prime lens collection includes the 14mm T3.1 FP X, 20mm T1.5 FP X, 24mm T1.5 FP X, 35mm T1.5 FP X, 50mm T1.3 FP X, 85mm T1.3 FP X and 135mm T2.2 FP X. All of the lenses in the collection feature an 11-bladed iris, are color balanced across the lineup and have the same minimized focus breathing as Canon’s EF-mount cinema prime lenses.

Sumire — pronounced ‘soo-mee-ray’ — is a word of Japanese origin that is most often associated with ‘a floral gentleness and beauty,’ a characteristic Canon sees in its new lens collection.

Beyond a whole host of third-party full-frame and Super 35mm PL-mount cameras, the Sumire Prime lenses will work with Canon’s entire lineup of Cinema EOS full-frame and Super 35mm 4K cameras as well. In the event an EF-mount is needed, Canon is offering the option to swap the PL-mount for an EF-mount at its Canon Factory Service and Repair center, a process that can be reversed if needed.

The Canon CN-E24mm T1.5 FP X, CN-E35mm T1.5 FP X, CN-E50mm T1.3 FP X and CN-E85mm T1.3 FP X lenses are scheduled to be available in Summer 2019; the Canon CN-E14mm T3.1 FP X lens in Fall 2019; and the Canon CN-E20mm T1.5 FP X and CN-E135mm T2.2 FP X lenses in Winter 2019/Spring 2020.

All Sumire Prime lenses feature an 11-bladed iris and bright T-stops that allow users to capture images that feature a more natural circular-like bokeh from both maximum to minimum aperture. The use of an odd number of iris blades also helps to diffuse light rays and produce what is generally considered a more sought after, artistically pleasing and cinematic look with warmer colors. The lenses also achieve uniform color balance throughout the lineup, helping to reduce the need for post grading, even when a production is frequently changing lenses.

The highly durable Sumire Prime lenses feature the same outstanding operability and reduced focus breathing as Canon’s well-established EF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses. Canon launches four new 4K / 30p professional camcorders in XA range

Canon has added four new models to its XA range of professional camcorders updating the series to include its first models capable of 4K / 30p recording: the XA55, XA50, XA45 and XA40.

All four of the cameras are aimed at professional news, broadcast and corporate videographers. They providing 5-axis OIS support for their wide ranging zoom lenses and feature dual XLR sockets built-in to the handle for linear PCM audio recording.

The XA55 and XA50 are essentially the same camera just with the addition of an HD-SDI (3G-SDI in Europe) terminal in the XA55. Both use 1″-type sensors and use Canon’s Dual Pixel AF system. They have a 15x zoom that covers the angle of view we’d expect from a 25.5-382.5mm lens on a full frame system, and both offer a Wide Dynamic Range Gamma mode that Canon says increases the DR by 800% to improve detail in highlight areas and to produce more accurate color.

The XA45 and XA40 use smaller 1/2.84-inch sensors and have 20x zoom lenses (29.3-601mm). As well as offering 4K / 30p recording each of the new models provides an over-sampled HD footage mode.

A fifth model launched at the same time has many of the features of the XA55 according to Canon, but is aimed at the budget/student market and doesn’t feature an overhead handle. The Canon VIXIA/LEGRIA HF G60 4K UHD uses a 1″-type sensor, has Dual Pixel AF and a 15x zoom with a variable maximum aperture.

Some existing Canon camcorders will also benefit from new firmware:

  • XF705: Firmware Version 1.0.1.1 now features improved zoom response when using the zoom ring or zoom rocker, improved focus following speed during zooming, and improved image quality of interlaced recording.
  • XF405/XF400: Firmware Version 1.0.3.0 now features IP streaming, the ability to set custom white balance, support for the reset function that resets the clip number when the reel number is set and improved image quality of interlaced recording.
  • XF405 only: Firmware Version 1.0.3.0 now features 3G-SDI mapping at level A and level B.
  • VIXIA GX10: Firmware Version 1.0.3.0 now features the ability to set custom white balance.

The new XA55 and XA50 models are due to ship in June this year and will cost $ 2699 and $ 2199. The budget VIXIA/LEGRIA HF G60 will arrive at the same time and will cost $ 1699. Those interested in the XA45 and XA40 should see their cameras later this month, at a cost of $ 2199 and $ 1699.

Meeting videographer needs for a variety of applications, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced four new additions to the lineup of XA Series professional camcorders, the XA55, XA50, XA45 and XA40. These four camcorders are the first in the series to feature 4K 30p recording. They also include a detachable XLR handle and the XA55 and XA45 each feature an HD-SDI terminal. In addition, the company has announced the Canon VIXIA HF G60 4K UHD camcorder, a budget-friendly, compact-and-lightweight camcorder.

All of the camcorders feature Canon’s five-axis Intelligent Optical Image Stabilization system, providing users with powerful image stabilization via a Dynamic mode, which helps reduce image distortion, even when shooting while moving. The ergonomically designed and highly portable camcorders have a three-inch LCD touch panel screen and user-friendly, tilting, high-resolution Electronic View Finder (EVF).

The XA55 and XA45 are excellent options for news reporting and documentary shooting, while the XA50 and XA40 are geared more towards broadcasting schools, government agencies and corporate-video production companies. The affordable VIXIA HF G60 caters to advanced amateur videographers who need a 4K UHD camcorder to shoot a wedding or a student film project.

The XA55 and XA50 camcorders both feature a 1.0-inch sensor, nine-bladed circular aperture and Dual-Pixel CMOS AF with a 15x (25.5-382.5mm) genuine wide-angle Canon optical zoom lens. For natural and realistic life-like imagery the XA55 and XA50 camcorders feature a Wide Dynamic Range (DR) Gamma mode. This lowers the barrier for focusing, especially when shooting in 4K, which requires strict focus accuracy. By suppressing overexposure in high- brightness areas of the composition, this mode helps achieve a wide dynamic range of 800 percent to help produce seamless tone gradations, resulting in smooth detail, accurate color and virtually no blown-out highlights. The camera’s Dual Pixel Focus Guide takes advantage of Dual Pixel CMOS AF data to display focus-assist information on the screen. The camcorders also record 4K UHD/30p (4:2:0 8 bit) and 1080p Full HD (4:2:2 10 bit) via SDI/HDMI Output in XF-AVC and MP4 format to dual-card SD card slots with dual and relay recording.

The XA45 and XA40 camcorders both feature an eight-bladed circular aperture with the ability to record 4K UHD/30p (4:2:0 8 bit) and 1080p Full HD (4:2:2 10 bit) via SDI/HDMI Output) in MP4 or XF-AVC format to dual-card SD card slots with dual and relay recording. To help provide enhanced image quality over its predecessor, over sample HD processing can be utilized with information obtained from the 4K 1/2.84-inch sensor and the DIGIC DV 6 image processor. Both camcorders boast a 20x (29.3-601mm) genuine wide-angle Canon optical zoom lens.

The Canon VIXIA HF G60 4K UHD camcorder is packed with many of the same great features found in the XA55 and XA50, like a nine-bladed circular aperture, Dual Pixel Focus Guide and Wide DR, but with the budget- conscious user in mind. The affordable camcorder is an ideal tool for young videographers taking their first steps in the craft and will be sure to please due to its compact-and-lightweight form factor in addition to ease of use.

Tiffen launches Steadicam Steadimate-S vest adapter for single handled gimbals

Tiffen has introduced a device aimed at owners of single handled gimbals like the DJI Ronin-S that allows them to connect their device to a Steadicam vest and arm to add extra stability. The Steadicam Steadimate-S is said to make holding single handle gimbals much easier too, so operators will be able to use them for longer without tiring.

Tiffen already markets the Steadicam Steadimate, which is designed for dual handled gimbals such as the DJI Ronin, and this new model works on the same principles but for single handled devices. The Steadimate-S consists of a bracket and a pair of counter weights. The bracket attaches the gimbal to the arm of the Steadicam vest and the weights ensure the gimbal remains upright. The gimbal then becomes part of the vest and benefits from the z-axis stabilization of the Steadicam arm as well as the x/y-axis stabilization of the gimbal’s own gyro head. The company says this arrangement helps to eliminate the ‘bounce’ often seen in footage shot with single handed gimbals in walking shots.

Users have a choice of two kits to suit the weight of their set-up. The Steadicam Steadimate-S 15 System comes with the A-15 Steadicam Arm and Scout Vest and can be used with up to 6.8kg / 15lbs of kit, while those with camera/gimbal combinations that weigh up to 13.6kg / 30lbs will need the Steadimate-S 30 System that uses the A-30 Arm and Zephyr Vest. The Steadimate-S will also be available on its own for those who already have a vest and arm.

Prism Lens FX launches three lens filters with built-in prism and flare effects

Prism Lens FX has launched a new line of lens filters that have built-in prism effects. The Variable Prism Filters are being sold as a three-filter bundle and individually with three different filter options: Prism, Chromatic Flare, and Split Glass. Each product is offered as a 77mm rotating filter alongside an optional 82mm to 77mm step down ring.

The Variable Prism Filters offer unique effects without the need to hold items in front of the lens. All three products are recommended for use with 50mm or greater telephoto lenses and a 1.4 / 2 / 2.8 aperture. The Prism filter is designed to add bokeh and flares to images, while the Chromatic Flare filter adds streak / anamorphic flares and the Split filter adds fractal / light leak effects. Photo Mechanic 6 launches with 64-bit support, selectable ingestion and more

As promised earlier this month, Camera Bits has released Photo Mechanic 6, a major update to the company’s image ingestion software. A free trial is available to download for new users on Windows and macOS, while ‘qualified’ existing customers can upgrade for $ 89 USD. A new software license is priced at $ 139 USD. For users who purchased Photo Mechanic 5 in 2018 will receive a license key for Photo Mechanic 6 for free.

Photo Mechanic 6 brings a large number of big and small improvements, including the previously announced 64-bit support, the ability to ingest images from selection, better image caching, full-screen support for Preview and Contact Sheet windows, and reverse geocoding.

As part of the initial release, Photo Mechanic 6 brings new elements including a new render cache and image gallery exporter. In addition to new features, version 6 also adds improvements to existing tools, including crop, slideshow, and the Find and Replace panel, plus new support for Blu-ray disc burning and much more.

The software enables photographers to rapidly ingest images, organize, and manage them at faster speeds than catalogue-based competitors. Users have the ability to cull, tag, view, organize and export their images from a single application. This is the first major update to Photo Mechanic since the release of version 5 in 2012.

Mac users must be running at least Mac OS X 10.10 or higher to use Photo Mechanic 6; Windows users must be running a 64-bit version of either Windows 7, 8, or 10.

In addition to the release of Photo Mechanic 6, Camera Bits has also announced Photo Mechanic Plus, a premium upgrade version of Photo Mechanic that will include the much-anticipated Catalog feature. A limited beta of Photo Mechanic Plus will be launched on April 22nd to Photo Mechanic 6 owners at no extra cost and will be launched alongside a dedicated forum where beta testers can share feedback.

In Camera Bits’ own words, the upcoming Catalog feature ‘is an image database for managing large numbers of image files across multiple locations.’ After the beta period is over Photo Mechanic Plus will be offered as a paid upgrade over Photo Mechanic 6 at a price that’s yet to be announced.

Hasselblad launches new cable release, battery charging hub for X1D

Hasselblad has introduced a cable release for its X1D medium format rangefinder-style camera alongside a new USB double battery charger. The Release Cord X is 90cm/36in long and triggers the shutter in single shot and continuous modes, and controls the camera via its microphone socket.

Dual slots on the Battery Charging Hub allow for two batteries to be charged simultaneously and for the camera to be powered via the USB C connector. The hub can be plugged into the AC power supply to charge batteries and the camera, or it can be fed from a portable power bank. The hub is compatible with both battery varieties the camera takes, but charges the newer 3400mAh models 25% more quickly – in 2 hours 18 minutes for one and 2 hours 48 minutes for two. The older 3200mAh model takes 3 hours.

Batteries can be checked via the LED panel that monitors the charging process as well as providing a quick levels readout for partially charged units.

Hasselblad X system expands with Release Cord X and Battery Charging Hub

Hasselblad proudly expands its photographic tool kit for the X System with the introduction of the new Release Cord X and Battery Charging Hub. With Hasselblad’s full commitment to the development of the X System, these two new accessories alongside the introduction of the newest XCD Lenses greatly expand the creative capabilities of the revolutionary mirrorless medium format X1D-50c.

The Hasselblad Release Cord X allows for remote shutter actuation, an invaluable tool when eliminating shake or vibration is paramount. A durable cloth-wrapped 90cm (36 in.) cable connects to the X1D-50c’s microphone input port and the remote’s simple single button operation allows photographers to keep vibration to a minimum. When autofocus is enabled on the camera, a single action swiftly starts autofocus and then releases the shutter. Holding the button down when in Continuous Capture mode allows for multiple frames to be captured, whilst setting the camera in Manual Focus mode allows for Release Cord X to fire the shutter without delay. Its durable metal construction matches the adventurous endeavours of Hasselblad’s X System users and its slim, ergonomic design fits comfortably in the hand. For seamless functionality, the X1D should be updated to the latest 1.22 firmware available at My Hasselblad.

The Hasselblad Battery Charging Hub makes it possible for a Hasselblad photographer to streamline the battery charging process, allowing X1D photographers to go further with their creative pursuits. Its dual slots support the simultaneous charging of two batteries while an integrated USB Type-C connector supports mains power via an included power supply or from common external USB battery banks (sold separately). Front-facing LEDs indicate status and capacity when charging, or users can use the Battery Charging Hub to check battery levels simply by inserting a battery and pressing a single button. The Battery Charging Hub supports both first-generation 3200mAh X System batteries and current 3400mAh batteries, the latter of which support quick-charging up to 25% faster than the former. This equates to a completely replenished single battery in 2 hours 18 minutes, or dual batteries in 2 hours 48 minutes. First-generation 3200mAh batteries recharge completely in approximately 3 hours and completed charging cycles are indicated by an audible chime in either situation. Think Tank Photo launches Vision shoulder bags for DSLR and mirrorless gear

Think Tank Photo has unveiled its new Vision series of shoulder bags, including the Vision 10, Vision 13 and Vision 15. The new line is designed to accommodate mirrorless and DSLR cameras alongside ‘pro-sized’ lenses and lens hoods, according to the company. The bags feature a padded divider system that can be customized to meet individual needs, as well as pockets for tablets and laptops.

The Vision 10 bag is the smallest of the series, offering enough interior space for a single standard-size camera body with either a short zoom or wide lens attached alongside another lens or two and a 10-inch tablet; there’s also space for a detached 24-70mm lens. Alternatively, this bag can hold a mirrorless camera kit that includes three or four lenses.

Vision 10 Insert

The Vision 13 offers a bit more space, including enough room for both a 10-inch tablet and a 13-inch laptop, as well as up to a 70-200mm detached lens. The Vision 15 offers the most space with room for a standard size camera body with an attached 24-70mm lens, up to four extra lenses, and a flash, as well as a 10-inch tablet and up to a 15-inch laptop. There’s also room for a 70-200mm detached lens.

All three bags feature exterior fabric with a water-repellent DWR coating and polyurethane underside coating, as well as YKK RC Fuse zippers, 420D velocity nylon, 350G 3D air mesh, 3-ply bonded nylon thread, 500D 2-tone polytech weave nylon tarpaulin, and antique-plated metal hardware.
