Photo Lessons From the Street

18 Aug

Street photography can be intimidating. Snagging candids of strangers is uncomfortable, at first.

While it’s best to simply to get out and learn as you go, it is nice to arm yourself with a few tips. Marius Vieth, a seasoned street-photog, doles out 10 lessons learned in this article. He includes advice on how to blend in, predict patterns and be ready for that crucial moment.

Our favorite tips from the article are:

  • Minimal gear – Take only your camera and forget the added gear. You don’t want to be swapping lenses when the perfect photo-op pops up.
  • Find natural contrasts – Your foreground should be different enough from the background to make them both visually interesting.
  • Simplify your choices – Try focusing on one element (like a color or pattern) for a couple hours.

PJ Throwback! Our Favorites From Then and Now

18 Aug

Whoa, it’s been a minute since we launched back in 2006. Free Hugs were everywhere, Pluto was downgraded (tear) and we were all Crazy for Gnarls Barkley. While we’re still waiting on Pluto to take back the planet title, our shop has upgraded universally.

Today, we’re throwin’ it back with a mash-up of our favorite items of yesteryear (that are still rocking in our shop!) and their new counterparts.

Back From the Future: Working Hoverboard Surfs Water & Rails

07 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

hoverboard over water

Pro skaters pull tricks on (and beyond) the pavement on this real-life hoverboard – at a distance, one might mistake their rides for normal skateboards, except for the steam from liquid nitrogen cooling superconductors to negative 320 degrees. Completing the futuristic scene, hovering drone cameras can be seen floating into and out of view, capturing wide-angle views and close-up shots of the gravity-defying skateboarders in action.

hoverboard park

Developed by Lexus, getting the hang of this electromagnetic contraption is still not trivial, even for professionals, as many falls and bails illustrate in the video above. Considering the challenge of relearning a fundamentally difference set of balancing variables, though, these skaters do quite well for themselves, even managing a few rail slides and to coast across a body of water.

The device does, however, come with a significant catch: like other similar inventions, it relies on a metallic subsurface to function – the depiction of this scene as taking place a typical skateboard is alas somewhat misleading.

hoverboard jump

Out in the real world, there are limited environments where one might actually make this work. That being said, infrastructure changes, and should this take off as a recreational sport, new parks could be designed around these devices as well. At the very least, this one is a few steps past the Hendo in terms of technological compactness, robustness, stability and, of course, an outdoor demo to get people excited.

Salt-Powered Lamp: 8 Hours of Light from 1 Glass of Saltwater

27 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

salt energy lamp design

Aiming to bring low-cost illumination to residents of the Philippines, a nation of 7,000 oceanic islands, the Salt Lamp uses a free and abundant resource to reduce fire risk from candles and replace the cost of traditional lighting.

salt water lamp

Developed by engineer Lipa Aisa Mijena of De La Salle University, the Salt Lamp requires a single glass of water with two tablespoons of salt to provide a night’s worth of a light, but, best of all, it can run off the naturally salty water of the surrounding ocean.

salt powered charger device

The electrode can run for over a year without requiring replacement as well. The next-generation version of the Salt Lamp will also have the capacity to charge portable electronic devices like cellular phones.

salt powered light

Currently, many households in the country lack access to or funds for electricity, resorting instead to oil lamps (which can cause house fires) or battery-powered lights (which cost more to use). Worse, during times of critical need (the area being prone to natural disasters) the resources required to make light are all the more essential yet difficult to acquire.

salt lamp design

As someone who has both spent time with locals around the country and a member of Greenpeace Philippines, Mijena developed the Salt Light as an eco-friendly, low-footprint alternative that could be sold commercially but, first and foremost, deployed via non-profit organizations to those in need. “There are no materials and components inside the lamp that may cause fire accidents. One less thing to worry about for families that rely on kerosene lamps as their main source of lighting. This lamp uses the science behind the Galvanic cell, the basis for battery-making, changing the electrolytes to a non-toxic, saline solution — making the entire process safe and harmless.”
