Canon announces budget-friendly EOS Rebel T6 (1300D)

Canon has announced its latest entry-level DSLR, the Rebel T6, which is known as the EOS 1300D in most regions. The T6 is a relatively minor update to the Rebel T5 (EOS 1200D) and adds a faster Digic 4+ processor, higher resolution LCD, ‘white priority’ WB mode (which produces more neutral color in tungsten lighting), a food scene mode and Wi-Fi with NFC.

The T6 retains the same 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 9-point AF system, Full HD video capture and numerous scene and creative modes as its predecessor.

The Rebel T6 will ship in the US next month at a price of $ 549, which includes the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II lens.

Canon launches a pair of new large format printers aimed at the professional market

Canon has announced it will introduce two new large format printers for professional photographers as part of its imagePrograf Pro series. The Pro-2000 and Pro-4000 both use 12-color Lucia pigment ink systems and produce either 24in or 44in prints. With their black bodies and ‘accentuated red line’ the printers are designed to link visually with the Canon EOS range of cameras to emphasise that they are intended for photo-quality printing and made to get the most out of EOS files.

A transparent Chroma Optimiser ‘ink’ is used alongside the colors that Canon says improves ‘print performance on gloss papers’ – which means it evens out the finish between the inks and the paper so the inks don’t stand out.

The printers are due to arrive in the middle of the year priced $ 5995 for the Pro-4000 and $ 2995 for the Pro-2000.

Upgrading a classic: Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM Mark II review

Canon 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS USM Mark II Review

The king is dead, long live the Mark II. After 15 long years, Canon finally upgraded one of the biggest-selling telezooms of all time – the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM. The Mk II version has the same headline specifications but with enhanced features and improved performance all-round. While the new model is better for sure, when comparing the Mk I and Mk II side by side it quickly becomes clear just why it took Canon so long: the MkI version was, and still is, a decent lens. It’s always been very popular too, and known for holding its value well on the used market, so Canon was in no rush to change a winning formula.

The 100-400mm Mk II retains the same focal length and F4.5-5.6 overall maximum apertures as the original model. Both lenses change up to F5 at around the 125mm mark, and the Mk I then goes to F5.6 at 250mm while the Mk II holds on slightly longer, making the final switch at just over 300mm. Apart from a little extra weight, the physical dimensions are basically unchanged, but everything else is new and upgraded. There’s a totally new state-of-the-art optical design with more elements, a much-improved image stabilization system, a minimum focusing distance that’s been cut in half and faster autofocus drive. Build quality has been taken up a notch, now with a full set of weather seals, and the push-pull zoom control (unloved by some) is swapped for a more conventional twist-ring. It’s finished in Canon’s newer light gray L-color, as opposed to the old creamy-white.

  • Same size as Mk I, though slightly heavier at 1570g (vs. 1380g)

Canon now offers the broadest selection of telezooms of any brand, at a variety of price points. In the premium sector, there are four 70-200mm L-grade zooms, with a choice of F2.8 or F4 maximum apertures, with and without image stabilization. The 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Mk II is relevant here as it works well with 1.4x or 2x extenders, as an alternative to something longer.

More recently, Canon added a third lens to its options in the versatile 70-300mm category, with the 70-300mm F4-5.6L IS USM being an excellent zoom that is essentially a scaled-down version of the 100-400mm Mk II (and considerably cheaper, too). There is also the Canon 200-400mm F4L IS USM with its unique built-in 1.4x extender, though the stratospheric price puts it in a rather different class, and Canon has a couple of excellent prime telephotos in this focal length range, too. The image-stabilized 300mm F4L IS USM and 400mm F5.6L USM both hail from the same era as the original 100-400mm Mk I, and have also stood the test of time well.

Looking at other brands, the Nikon AF-S 80-400mm F4.5-5.6G ED VR is a close rival to the Canon 100-400 II in terms of specification, design and high performance. Likewise, the Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM II for A-mount is another proven performer. Both lenses feature a slightly wider angle of view at the short end, but have notably longer minimum focusing distances than the Canon 100-400 Mk II. Compare Nikon vs Sony performance data here.

Surprisingly, no third-party manufacturer currently offers anything similar, though anyone in the market for an extra-long lens should be sure to check out the trio of 150-600mm F5-6.3 superzooms from Sigma (which has two versions) and Tamron that have caused quite a stir, bringing new standards of performance to this market segment at an affordable cost. But while they might appear to cover much the same ground as the Canon 100-400mm Mk II on paper, they’re very different in the hand – much bigger, much heavier, and arguably, harder to get the most from. The new Nikon AF-S 200-500mm F5.6 E ED VR and as yet unproven Pentax D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW also fall into the larger/heavier category, and with longer minimum focusing distances compared to the Canon Mk II.

Angle of View

Shire Hall, Cambridge, UK, is one of my favorite subjects for comparisons (also used for the Tamron 16-300mm VC review) though unfortunately it was partly obscured by scaffolding on this occasion.  Sharpness is very high, and unusually consistent – throughout the zoom range, at all apertures, and across the frame. It’s at larger apertures where the Mk II shows most sharpness improvement over the MkI. The images above are both at maximum aperture, F4.5 at 100mm and F5.6 at 400mm, using a Canon 5DS R (full-frame), and are shown without any software corrections applied for chromatic aberration, distortion or vignetting.

The 100-400mm zoom range, with a generous 4:1 ratio, provides a 24.4° to 6.2° angle of view on full-frame, measured across the diagonal from corner to corner. It’s very versatile and well suited to a wide range of popular subjects, including all kinds of field sports, and wildlife from safaris to zoos. At a motor race or air display, the spectator fences are often lined with Canon 100-400mm zooms. Compared to a fixed focal length lens, when photographing sports or anything where the shooting distance varies, you can zoom to pull in subjects from a distance, then zoom back when the action gets closer. Longer focal length settings are also perfect for sniping candid portraits, say at a wedding or other social occasion. At the shorter end, while it may not be the obvious choice for portraiture, at around 100-135mm it’s just about perfect on full-frame.

ABOVE: With a broad 4:1 zoom range, unusually close focusing, and excellent image-stabilization, the Canon 100-400mm Mk II can turn its hand to more than just sports and wildlife. It’s sharp at all focal lengths and apertures. Check the fly on the flamingo’s beak – the fine veins on its wings are barely more than 1-pixel wide (Canon 5DS R, monopod, 400mm F5.6, 1/250 sec, ISO 400).

The Canon 100-400mm Mk II goes very well on APS-C cameras like the Canon 7D Mk II, with its excellent AF and fast frame rate. The 1.6x crop factor gives more effective reach and creates a megazoom 160-640mm equivalent angle-of-view. The Canon 100-400mm Mk II is also compatible with the Canon 1.4x extender, though it will only autofocus on higher-end Canon DSLRs that retain AF up to F8 (currently 7D Mk II, 5D Mk III, 5DS/R, 1DX/II). The 2x extender will physically fit, but all AF functions are disabled.

CP+ Canon interview: ‘important to increase development speed’

As well as reporting on the newest gear, we use the opportunity of visiting the CP+ show in Japan to sit down and talk to senior executives from the major camera and lens manufacturers. This year, we were fortunate enough to spend some time with Mr Go Tokura of Canon. 


Canon has had a big year with the launch of the enthusiast-focused EOS 80D and the professional EOS-1D X Mark II. Can you summarize your strategies for catering to these two different market segments?

With regard to the 1D X Mark II, this is an Olympics year.  In years when the Olympic Games are held, one of our objectives is to launch a flagship model within our DSLR lineup to try to capture the professional user market. So this is a big objective in terms of strategy.

As for the 80D, we have entry-level DSLR models under the Rebel brand and the 80D is the level just above – designed to ensure that users can maximize its features in the best way possible. That’s in terms of price, operability, usability and that sort of thing. In recent years the entry-level market segment has been weakening, but the level above that, where we’re targeting advanced amateur users, is becoming an increased focus. The 70D is doing well and is quite popular among our users, and for that reason we expect a lot of interest in the 80D.

Some of our readers were disappointed that the 80D does not include 4K video. Why did you decide not to include this feature?

As you know, in our DSLR lineup we incorporate both video functions and traditional stills DSLR functions. Among our DSLR users we’re still seeing a strong emphasis on the stills photography function. 

We’re promoting our DSLRs as providing both stills and video features – the best of both worlds, you might say. However with regard to the 80D, the main emphasis was to maximise the stills side of the camera. Then, with the aim of increasing the user base, we add movie features to this established stills shooting feature set.

The EOS 80D offers an easy-to-use video feature set, and its new 18-135mm kit lens is compatible with Canon’s new inexpensive Power Zoom unit for convenient handling in video mode. But it’s not 4K-capable, and as yet, no camera in Canon’s sub-pro DSLR lineup is, either.

Do you think there is space in the enthusiast DSLR market for a more capable video camera? Which maybe does offer 4K?

We are considering this and we recognize that this is a feature which might be in demand in the future.

Do you think that Dual Pixel AF will ever be equal to conventional phase-detection DSLR focus, and if so, when will this happen?

It’s very difficult to predict timing, of course, but we want to make Dual Pixel AF surpass conventional phase-detection in terms of performance. 

Dual Pixel AF is a technology which has huge potential for mirrorless cameras. A lot of our readers are still very hopeful for future Canon enthusiast mirrorless models. Is there anything that you would like to say to them?

Obviously I can’t be particularly concrete when talking about our future product planning, but this is something that we are looking at. Something that is under consideration. There are some features, such as AF, which have not yet caught up with DSLRs, so given the current state of affairs it would be a little unrealistic to say that we will suddenly start offering a professional mirrorless camera. There’s still a performance gap that needs to be addressed. 

If we assume that at some point in the future Canon will create an enthusiast or professional mirrorless camera, what are your benchmarks?

This is just my personal opinion. In my view there are two key features that have to be addressed. The first is autofocus, particularly tracking of moving subjects. The other is the viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder would have to offer a certain standard. If those two functions were to match the performance of EOS DSLR camera performance, we might make the switch.

Tremendous progress has been made in electronic systems.  However in terms of AF, pro-level AF functions, and the range of shooting situations that professional photographers can respond to, there’s still a gap between DSLRs and mirrorless systems.

The Canon EOS M3 is Canon’s most convincing mirrorless camera to date, but it isn’t the model that a lot of Canon users have been hoping for. According to Mr Takura, autofocus and electronic viewfinder performance has to improve before Canon will consider launching an enthusiast-focused mirrorless product. 

When I spoke to Mr Maeda last year he told me that he was focused on increasing the speed of product development at Canon. Have you seen a change?

I can’t give any concrete details here but this is a goal that we’re working to achieve. 

The reason I ask is that it seems that compared to the past, the entry-level ILC market seems to be moving rather slowly right now, whereas in terms of development speed, the enthusiast and semi-pro ILC market is moving quite quickly. 

Yes, I agree. For this reason, it’s becoming increasingly important that we do increase development speed.  That’s why it’s considered a very important objective that we’re continuing to address.

What is your strategy for growth in this changed market? What do you need to do to differentiate?

One of the differences between us and our competition is the EF lens lineup. We have a very broad base of EF lens users and we don’t want to do anything that would sacrifice their loyalty, so it’s a very high priority for us to satisfy their needs and meet their demands. 

With regard to the overall market, maybe there’s a lack of vigor and it could be viewed as shrinking. Looking at the compact camera market, the bottom end is dropping considerably and the competition is smartphones. Smartphones offer a very easy, convenient way of taking photos. However in the high-end compact segment, at the high end there are cameras that offer functions and performance that smartphones cannot compete with and here we’re seeing growth. So in the compact market, offering features that smartphones cannot compete with is a way of differentiating and invigorating the market. 

You mentioned loyalty. How important is it to you to continue to update older models via firmware even perhaps after end of life?

Of course we’d like to provide every level of support we can, even to users of older models. Should an opportunity arise we’ll obviously offer firmware updates so that they can get the most out of the models that they have purchased. However a lot of the performance depends on the hardware itself. There is only so much you can get out of older or out of date hardware. There are new devices incorporated in newer models which make possible improved performance, so there’s a kind of tradeoff. Unless newer hardware is introduced, sometimes it’s not possible to get the performance.

One of the areas where we’ve been pleased to see improvement from Canon is in sensors. What are your priorities in terms of sensor development in the future?

Increasing resolution and increasing sensitivity are ongoing objectives and that’s not going to change, but on top of that, as I’ve mentioned there’s an emphasis on merging stills and movie functions. So two priorities for future sensors are lower power consumption and increasing processing speed. 

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is a significant, albeit iterative upgrade to the 1D X. We should expect new flagship models in Olympic years, says Mr Tokura. 

As you develop semi-professional lines like the EOS 5D and 1D-series, where are you most focused in terms of improvement?

When we look at a model that we want to upgrade, we don’t take a single item of specification and choose to work on that and not other aspects. We try to improve all features to the same degree. The EOS 5DS however was an exception. Resolution was increased markedly, off the charts compared to anything we had done before. But that’s the exception. Usually we won’t try to boost any one feature over and above the rest of the feature set.

Our approach when it becomes time to launch the next generation of the EOS-1D X or the 5D, is that we try to raise performance across the board as best we can.

Editor’s note:

I last spoke to Mr Tokura in 2014, and although Canon has been pretty busy in the two years since then, when it comes to the big picture it might appear that not much seems to have really changed. The company still lacks a convincing mirrorless camera, as competitors like Sony continue to set a faster and faster pace of technological development at the semi-pro end of the ILC market.

But at least we have a clear sense of what it would take for Canon to make a ‘switch’ to mirrorless. Although Mr Takura acknowledges that the technology has advanced a lot, he still sees autofocus and the experience of using an electronic viewfinder as being the two key areas where mirrorless cameras lag behind DSLRs. Whether you agree with him or not, the implicit promise that Canon intends to improve Dual Pixel AF to the point where it rivals the best professional DSLR autofocus systems should be very exciting. 

Canon is big enough that it doesn’t need to worry too much about being left behind quite yet (Mr Takura’s point about Canon EF users is a good one – there are more than 100 million EF lenses out there, something that Sony certainly cannot boast) but I do sense a shift, of sorts, in my conversations with Canon representatives in recent months. Mr Maeda, who in conversations with us has stressed the importance of speeding up product development, is moving up inside the company. More than ever, his influence is, I think, being felt quite keenly by the managers that report to him. When I asked Mr Takura whether increasing development speed was still a priority, he answered with a knowing smile. It’s very clear that yes – it most definitely is.

CP+ 2016: Canon shows off new DSLRs and G7 X Mark II

As usual at the CP+ show in Yokohama, one of the longest lines can be found Canon’s booth. This year, Canon’s EOS 80D and EOS-1D X Mark II were in huge demand from both press and public attendees alike, and we fought our way through the crowd to get hands on with both new models – and the surprisingly nice PowerShot G7 X Mark II.

First up is the Canon EOS 80D. The 80D features a 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 45-point all cross-type autofocus system, and the company’s DIGIC 6 processor. Cosmetically similar to the popular 70D, the new model offers a number of significant updates.

The 80D will be familiar to users of the 70D of course, but operationally it shares a lot of features from much earlier cameras in Canon’s EOS lineup, going right back to the original D30 of 2000. It’s easy to dismiss this kind of homogeneity as conservative – even unimaginative, but there’s a reason that DSLRs in 2016 still look and function much like DSLRs from the early 2000s. It works.

When using live view or recording video users can take advantage of the 80D’s improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, which provides phase-detection autofocus with the mirror locked up in Live View. This particular iteration is Canon’s first attempt at Servo AF using Dual Pixel technology – and it works very nicely in our initial testing with moving subjects. So nicely, in fact, that we can’t to see it extended to all Canon DSLRs… and maybe even, well, that’s a lot of wishful thinking.

The 3″ rear LCD is touch sensitive and fully articulating, which is handy for shooting from low and high angles, and also for video. The 80D can record 1080/60p video and offers sockets for both a microphone and headphones. Wi-Fi is also built in, with support for NFC.

Although it lacks 4K, the 80D is a capable HD video camera. With the addition of the PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter (currently only compatible with the new 18-135mm kit zoom) and DM-E1 shotgun microphone it’s a powerful and surprisingly ergonomic package. We suspect that most serious Canon videographers will look towards the Cinema EOS line but students and beginner filmmakers will appreciate the 80D’s ease of use, and potentially its excellent autofocus – with no hunting – in video.

One camera that is definitely of interest to professionals is Canon’s new flagship stills model the EOS-1D X Mark II. The 1D X Mark II builds on the basic concept behind the 1D X, but offers increased resolution (from 16 to 20MP) increased speed (14fps in live view mode, 12fps in conventional DSLR mode) and 4K video capture.

The EOS-1D X Mark II’s autofocus system has also been upgraded. The 61-point AF array covers a greater area, and these AF points work in concert with a 360,000 pixel metering sensor which should, in theory, mean better tracking of moving subjects.

Ergonomically, the EOS-1D X Mark II is – like the 80D – very similar to its predecessors. Professional users are even less accepting of change than enthusiasts because with years of muscle memory built up, they need key controls to stay more or less in the same place from model to model. As such, the EOS-1D X Mark II looks and operates a lot like its predecessor, and indeed some key controls have barely moved since the original film EOS-1.

The EOS-1D X Mark II’s battery (which fits horizontally inside the base of the camera) should be good for more than 1200 images in normal use – a major differentiator of professional DSLRs compared to lower-end models (and any current mirrorless camera). Needless to say, the EOS-1D X Mark II is fully weather-sealed and feels like it’s been milled from a solid lump of something very solid, very expensive and very heavy.

Who would have thought that after 16 years, professional Canon DSLRs would still be using CompactFlash cards? But here we are in 2016, and the same media that fit inside the original EOS-1D can still be used in the EOS-1D X Mark II. New in the current flagship though is a second slot for cosmetically similar (but physically incompatible) C-Fast cards. C-Fast cards are capable of greater data throughput, which will help if you’re one of those people that likes to shoot extended bursts of 170 Raw files at 14fps.

If you are one of those people, you should pay attention ti the warning inside the EOS-1D X Mark II’s card slot. Don’t go burning your fingers after shooting. It gives a new meaning to the term ‘blazingly fast’…

Ethernet? Why yes. Although the EOS-1D X Mark II features built-in Wi-Fi, a 330Mbps wired connection is still the best option for absolute speed when shooting intensely at (say) the Olympics. It’s no coincidence that Canon (like Nikon) likes to release new professional cameras in Olympic years.

At the other end of Canon’s camera range is the 20MP PowerShot G7 X Mark II. We really liked the original G7 X for everyday ‘carry everywhere’ shooting but it had some limitations. The Mark II has not been significantly changed when it comes to ergonomics or core features (inside you’ll find the same excellent 20MP 1-inch sensor and 24-100mm equivalent lens), but Canon has made some improvements.

One of those improvements is a front dial that can be switched from clicking to non-clicking operation, and a subtle front grip, in place of the smooth body of the original G7 X.

A new Digic 7 processor brings very welcome performance improvements, especially in Raw mode. Raw capture is now possible at 8fps and while standing at Canon’s booth we shot for more than 20 frames before the camera that we used started to slow. Finally, a Canon PowerShot G-series compact that is genuinely usable in Raw mode…

The G7 X Mark II’s rear screen is a multi-angle 3.0-inch capacitive  model with 1.04 million dots, capable of tilting up to 180° upwards (for selfies) and 45° down (for other things). The G7 X Mark II will be available in May for $ 699.

Canon PowerShot SX720 HS boasts new 40x zoom lens with a compact form factor

Canon has released a new long-zoom compact dubbed the PowerShot SX720 HS. New for this model is a lens with a wider zoom range compared to its predecessor, offering a 35mm-equivalent of 24-960mm at F3.3-6.9. The sensor remains a 20.3MP 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS unit with a DIGIC 6 image processor.

In addition to the new lens, the SX720 HS has a redesigned grip, and battery life has increased to a CIPA-rated 250 shots (355 in ECO mode). Photos can be composed on a 3″ LCD display with 922k dots. The camera carries over Canon’s Zoom Framing Assist system to automatically zoom in or out to follow subject movement and more accurately keep focus, and also comes with the Story Highlight feature to automatically compile images and videos from a day or event into a highlight reel with music and effects. Speaking of video, the SX720 can capture 1080/60p clips with stereo sound.

The SX720 HS will be available in March 2016 with an MSRP of $ 379.99.

Canon offers EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, power zoom adapter and directional microphone

Introduced alongside the Canon EOS 80D is an updated 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, offered separately and as a kit with the camera. The 18-135mm offers a new ‘Nano USM’ motor and boasts between 2.5x (wide-angle) and 4.3x (telephoto) faster performance compared to the previous STM version. 

Canon has also announced the PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for the lens, a detachable device that can smoothly and silently operate the zoom at 10 different speed levels. The adapter can also be used remotely with Canon’s Camera Connect app.

Emphasizing the 80D’s appeal to video enthusiasts, Canon has introduced its first external microphone for use with DSLRs, the Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1. It ships with a wind screen and offers a response range of 50Hz to 16kHz. 

The EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM will ship in March for $ 599.99. The PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter will be sold for $ 149.99 and the DM-E1 Directional Microphone will be offered at $ 249.99; both will be available in June.

New AF System and Dual Pixel CMOS AF
The 45-point all cross-type viewfinder AF system in the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, compared to 19-points in the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera, is now wider both horizontally and vertically for easier compositions with off-center subjects. Low light AF performance has been improved all the way down to EV-3 at the center point to achieve sharp results even in extreme low-light situations. The camera’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) Servo AF II autofocusing system utilizes color tracking with a 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor that automatically detects skin tone and colors to enhance tracking sensitivity, even with moving subjects that are rapidly changing pace or direction.  Enhancing the ease-of-use of the new AF system is the Canon EOS 80D’s new Intelligent Viewfinder which features approximately 100% viewfinder coverage. The full coverage helps prevent photographers from missing objects that are in the corners of the scene, which can reduce the need to crop images later on. 

Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs a new Canon CMOS sensor with which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both still imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance during Live View and video shooting. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the Canon EOS 80D camera features enhanced tracking sensitivity and is compatible with the full line of Canon EF Series lenses, including the new Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM  standard zoom lens. 

High-Quality Still and Video Image Performance
Featuring a new 24.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Canon’s superb DIGIC 6 Image Processor, as well as an improved still image ISO range of 100–16000 (Video ISO range 100–12800, both expandable to 25600), the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera is capable of producing sharp, detailed images and videos even in low-light conditions. High-speed continuous shooting up to seven frames per second (fps) combined with the 45-point all cross-type AF allows photographers to capture fast moving subjects easily and accurately, while the camera’s Scene Intelligent Auto Mode delivers optimized photos and offers outstanding scene detection for amazing results even when shooting in low light. HDR mode provides creative filter effects, such as natural, art standard, art bold, art vivid and art embossed. For added convenience, the Canon EOS 80D camera features Anti-Flicker shooting, similar to that found in the EOS 7D Mark II DSLR camera. Anti-Flicker shooting produces consistently high-quality results even when shooting in areas with fluorescent lighting or other flickering light sources by detecting the flicker cycle of the light source and shooting when brightness is near its peak. 

When users select the EOS Movie mode, the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video up to 60 fps, compared to 30 fps in the Canon EOS 70D, in MP4 format and in either ALL-I or IPB compression modes with optional embedded time code. For expanded creativity the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera features HDR movie and Time-Lapse movie modes and Movie creative filters like fantasy, old movie, memory, dramatic monochrome and miniature. Movie Servo AF custom settings allow users to speed up or slow down focusing speeds, enhancing creativity and artistic expression. For added flexibility, the Canon EOS 80D digital SLR camera also features a built-in headphone jack, a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment, and an additional stereo microphone jack.

News Lens, Power Zoom Adapter, and Directional Stereo Microphone Enhance Video Quality
In addition to the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, Canon U.S.A., Inc., is also introducing the Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, a newly designed lens with a premium exterior design that will serve as the kit lens for the new Canon EOS 80D camera. This the first Canon lens equipped with Nano USM, a new type of focusing motor that combines the benefits of a ring USM (ultrasonic motor) for high-speed AF during still photo shooting and lead-screw type STM (stepping motor) for smooth and quiet movie AF, and improved AF speeds up to 4.3x (Tele) and 2.5x (Wide) faster than the previous model. The Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens also provides up to four stops of optical image stabilization. A new lens hood, the EW-73D, is included with the new lens.

To further enhance the ease-of-use when shootings movies with a Canon DLSR or Cinema EOS cameras, Canon is introducing the Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, specifically constructed to be compatible with the design of the new Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens. The Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 is the world’s first detachable zoom adapter that provides silent and smooth zoom and can adjusted incrementally to 10 different levels of zoom speed3. Additionally, the PZ-E1 can be controlled remotely using the Canon Camera Connect app4.  

In addition to the new lens and power zoom adapter, Canon is introducing the first Canon-branded external microphone for the EOS system, the Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1. This new accessory microphone will help improve sound quality while shooting video, allowing users to rotate the direction of the microphone up and down from 90 to 120 degrees depending on the shooting situation. The DM-E1’s durable shock mount construction helps to reduce camera operation noise and lens drive sounds and is built to withstand the rigors of a variety of shooting situations. Featuring a frequency response range of 50Hz to 16kHz, the DM-E1 comes with a wind screen to help limit peripheral sound from wind and other outside factors, allowing shooters to utilize the microphone in a broad amount of shooting situations. Featuring a built-in power supply from a single “button-type” lithium cell battery, the DM-E1 also has a power indicator lamp allowing users to easily check its battery level.

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II boasts faster performance and improved ergonomics

Canon has introduced the PowerShot G7 X Mark II with a new DIGIC 7 processor, bringing much-needed improvements to camera performance. Maintaining its predecessor’s 20.1MP 1″-type CMOS sensor and 24-100mm equiv. F1.8-2.8 lens, the G7 X II brings some updates to the camera’s exterior as well, with a re-designed grip, bottom-hinged 3″ 1.04M-dot LCD and a front control dial that can switch between clicking or smooth-turning operation.

The new processor allows for face registration and better subject detection in scenes of low saturation or similar colors. In addition, it dramatically speeds up camera performance, with Canon claiming continuous 8 fps Raw shooting. Battery life is also 25% better than the original G7 X, with a CIPA-rated number of 265 shots per charge.

Full 1080/60p HD video is offered, as in its predecessor, along with Wi-Fi and NFC. The G7 X II provides Picture Style processing modes borrowed from the EOS DSLR line, and time-lapse movie mode is included.

The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II will be offered for $ 699 with availability in May.

Canon EOS 80D updates Dual Pixel AF, bumps resolution with 24MP sensor

Canon has updated its prosumer DSLR line with the EOS 80D, offering a newly developed 24.2MP APS-C sensor, 45-point all cross-type autofocus module, updated Dual Pixel AF for live view still and video recording, and Wi-Fi with NFC.

Canon claims its new AF module, a notable improvement over the 70D’s 19-point system, is capable of focusing in low light conditions down to -3EV at the center point. Dual Pixel AF now offers continuous focus, and all pixels are able to perform phase detection focus while being used for still imaging. Video recording is offered at an improved 1080/60p.

The 80D uses a DIGIC 6 processor and provides a native ISO range in stills shooting from 100-16,000, expandable to 25,600. Burst shooting at up to 7 fps is on par with the 70D. The 80D is equipped with an approximately 100% coverage optical viewfinder and a fully articulated 3″ 1.04M-dot touchscreen LCD, as well as built-in Wi-Fi with NFC.

The Canon EOS 80D will be available in March for $ 1199 body-only or $ 1799 bundled with an updated EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens.

When users select the EOS Movie mode, the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video up to 60 fps, compared to 30 fps in the Canon EOS 70D, in MP4 format and in either ALL-I or IPB compression modes with optional embedded time code. For expanded creativity the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera features HDR movie and Time-Lapse movie modes and Movie creative filters like fantasy, old movie, memory, dramatic monochrome and miniature. Movie Servo AF custom settings allow users to speed up or slow down focusing speeds, enhancing creativity and artistic expression. For added flexibility, the Canon EOS 80D digital SLR camera also features a built-in headphone jack, a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment, and an additional stereo microphone jack.

News Lens, Power Zoom Adapter, and Directional Stereo Microphone Enhance Video Quality
In addition to the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, Canon U.S.A., Inc., is also introducing the Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, a newly designed lens with a premium exterior design that will serve as the kit lens for the new Canon EOS 80D camera. This the first Canon lens equipped with Nano USM, a new type of focusing motor that combines the benefits of a ring USM (ultrasonic motor) for high-speed AF during still photo shooting and lead-screw type STM (stepping motor) for smooth and quiet movie AF, and improved AF speeds up to 4.3x (Tele) and 2.5x (Wide) faster than the previous model. The Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens also provides up to four stops of optical image stabilization. A new lens hood, the EW-73D, is included with the new lens.

To further enhance the ease-of-use when shootings movies with a Canon DLSR or Cinema EOS cameras, Canon is introducing the Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, specifically constructed to be compatible with the design of the new Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens. The Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 is the world’s first detachable zoom adapter that provides silent and smooth zoom and can adjusted incrementally to 10 different levels of zoom speed3. Additionally, the PZ-E1 can be controlled remotely using the Canon Camera Connect app4.

In addition to the new lens and power zoom adapter, Canon is introducing the first Canon-branded external microphone for the EOS system, the Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1. This new accessory microphone will help improve sound quality while shooting video, allowing users to rotate the direction of the microphone up and down from 90 to 120 degrees depending on the shooting situation. The DM-E1’s durable shock mount construction helps to reduce camera operation noise and lens drive sounds and is built to withstand the rigors of a variety of shooting situations. Featuring a frequency response range of 50Hz to 16kHz, the DM-E1 comes with a wind screen to help limit peripheral sound from wind and other outside factors, allowing shooters to utilize the microphone in a broad amount of shooting situations. Featuring a built-in power supply from a single “button-type” lithium cell battery, the DM-E1 also has a power indicator lamp allowing users to easily check its battery level.

The Canon EOS 80D Digital SLR camera and EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens are currently scheduled to be available in March 2016 for an estimated retail price of $ 1,199.00 for the body only, $ 1,799.00 with the new EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens and $ 599.99 respectively. 

The Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 and Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1 are currently scheduled to be available in June 2016, for estimated retail prices of $ 149.99 and $ 249.99 respectively.
