Auto body repair requires extensive training and expensive tooling these days, setting classic independent auto body shops squarely on the road to ruins.

Automotive innovations such as aluminum body panels and self-cleaning paint are cutting-edge today but they’ll be commonplace tomorrow, so if you’re thinking of taking the family ride down to (insert folksy name here) Auto Body next time you dent a door, fuggeddaboutit! End result: hundreds of abandoned auto body shops across the nation, from big cities to tiny towns like Keeler, California (population 66).

Indeed, neighborhood auto body shops are fading away… and so are their signs. Flickr user suism1 captured the rough and weathered “labelscar” above on January 13th of 2010.

“I doubt the Liberty Broom Works or the Kustom Paint & Body Shop have been at this location for quite a while,” comments Barbara Hullett of Hullett Photography about the gritty abandoned edifice above. Located in Liberty, North Carolina, the curious conjunction of defunct businesses begs the question: which one was abandoned first, the broom works or the body shop?

Them’s The Brakes

Small auto body and car repair shops of a certain age typically share a similar style and structure – cheap, practical, and plenty of garage doors. Though modern quick-lube and oil change shops are often built on this type of plan, it’s rare that one of the chain stores takes over a closed or abandoned body shop. Flickr user Justin Wolfe managed to find two similar-looking abandoned auto body shops within a stone’s throw of each other in Newport News, Virginia, on September 20th of 2013.

Import Expired

Owners of Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and other exotic foreign makes must be scratching their heads, wiping their monocles and driving veddy cawefuwy since the Cutler Import Body Shop threw in the grimy, oil-stained towel. The Grandview Heights, Ohio establishment was captured in all its letter-shedding glory on February 7th, 2009 by Flickr user brew127.

Tips for Posing Muscular Female Body Types

18 Jun

You’ve found a model. You’re excited. She’s in AMAZING shape. I mean amazing as in 8% body fat and abs that you can wash your clothes on. This might not be quite what you were expecting so here are some tips for posing your muscular, super fit model in more feminine poses.

Muscular Posing 1

This athletic model has a muscular physique. The tips in this article will help you pose her in a softer way.

Don’t flex

Tell your model to avoid flexing. It might sound counterintuitive but these are not sports or fitness competition photos. You do not want the flex, you want the form. Make sure you encourage your model to relax. Relax her shoulders and her arms. Her shoulders are broad so you want to help her relax them as much as possible.

Accentuate the curves

Unless you’re shooting an athletic or an androgynous story, you will most likely want your model to have some curves. Your muscular model will most likely not have curvy hips. You can create the illusion by posing. The key here is to watch as your model moves, see what her body does.

Muscular Posing 2

Have her hug her body and play around with her arms. You can also have her bend her knee just a little to add a bit of a curve.

Have her push her hips to one side, as she drops her shoulders and arms to hug her body. Another trick is to have her hug her body. This can create curves where there are none. As she’s hugging, have your model bend forward a little. Shoot from various angles to find the most flattering look. Thirdly, have her bend a knee – just a little. This knee will add yet another angle for you to work with. The knee should be moved as you’re shooting. Try having her cross her knee in front of the other leg. Use all of these tricks together to achieve the look you want.

Muscular Posing 3

Have your model embrace her hips. Encourage her to push one side out and have her hands and different lengths along her body as she leans forward just a bit.

Frame it

You can do a lot with a photo with your framing. Your muscular model will most likely have broad shoulders and you can bring those in a bit with your framing. Have your model pose with her shoulder facing you. Have her turn her head towards you, and you’ve now softened her shoulders. Encourage her to drop her shoulders as much as she can. She might not be able to go far so pay close attention, you don’t want to hurt her.

You can have her tilt a bit if you need to. You can also have her face straight on towards you. Have her put her hands on her sides slightly above her hips, one hand should be just a bit higher than the other. Have her roll her hips towards the camera just a bit. One hip should be slightly to the side. This pose gives her a bit of movement in her shape and helps to soften her form. From this point, you can vary your shooting angle and framing to get the look your going for.

Muscular Posing 4

Have your model turn her shoulder directly towards the camera. Shoot at different angles to get the look you’re going for.

These tips are the starting point for posing your muscular model. If you’re shooting athletic or competition photos then you’ll want to tweak these poses to accentuate the muscles. Remember that what you see is what you photograph. If something doesn’t look quite right, change it to look better. Use these tips to create the look you and your model want.

Body Image Of A Model With Sarah DeAnna

17 Jan

Hi FashionPhotograhyBlog.com readers,

Top fashion model, speaker & author of the book “Supermodel YOU, Sarah DeAnna, joins us once again on FPBlog to share her experiences of healthy bodies and body image in the modeling industry and how she came about to create her book that deals with finding identity and beauty within yourself. Let’s note wait any longer. Here is the interview of Sarah DeAnna speaking to FPBlog…

FashionPhotographyBlog.com Sarah DeAnna photo by Melissa Rodwell for Kurv Magazine

FPBlog: One of the things that I really admire about you, Sarah, is that  you have this gorgeous body. Models have to have gorgeous bodies, but you have this body through good habits and healthy means. You know in our industry, and I often at times I feel guilt about it, is the showing off, depicting the perfect image, body and face, and we then exploit that.

Young girls, who maybe are 5’10” and 115 pounds feel bad about themselves and it can lead to low self esteem or poor body image. Maybe they might try to get as thin as you are through unhealthy measures whether that’s through fasting, drugs or anorexia and that’s really sad. So you have written a book which I’m so happy and proud that you’ve done. Can you tell us about it?

Sarah Deanna: Yeah, it’s called Supermodel YOU, and basically it was my response to, like all the things your saying right now. Being in the industry, I just became the “go to girl” for models living in model apartments, backstage at shows or (for) agents (who) would tell the models to call or ask me because “Sarah Deanna is thin and she’s healthy and they’re having problems”. They knew I was eating anything, they knew I was healthy and it just became a passion of mine. Girls would come up to me, I would teach and help them.

So I started researching and I found something (interesting); that they were five keys that determine body weight for every single person and I was able to show how a model, a healthy model (because of our career and because of what we do), how we have mastered these keys. I put it into a book and I have an amazing publishing house (Hay House), support system and writer. I’m just really happy (about it) and it’s out now!

It’s my passion, my dream and I just want to (do it). It’s Supermodel YOU and it’s teaching people how to channel their own inner supermodel. It’s not (about) having somebody else’s body or (the body of) somebody that you see in a magazine, but your dream body, and your body that makes you feel the best, that you’re healthiest at, and I love it.

I cannot wait for people to get it and I hope that the message is understood the right way. (I hope that it is) given how we’re giving it, but (also) understood, that people feel empowered; girls won’t feel like a model is better than them or a person on the street, or a girl in their school or anything (is better than them). I hope they can get how to own their own identity and their own beauty.

FPBlog: That’s great! I’ll read it!

Exo-Prosthetics: Light, Cheap & Custom 3D-Printed Body Parts

09 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

3d bio printed leg

Lightweight, individualized and inexpensive, this design and manufacturing strategy bends artificial limbs in new directions and promises a more personalized product for those in need of a replacement (or upgrade).

3d custom titanium prosthesis

Developed by Adam Root, the process involves inverted laser scanning, 3D modeling and printing to generate form-fitting body parts that are comfortable, affordable and suited to a particular individual. The result is a “highly precise virtual model of the patient’s residual limb and matches its anatomy to within a fraction of a millimeter” which together with the “MIT biomechatronics lab-developed fitsocket captures leg tissue properties to enable a better fit.” Off-the-shelf parts round out these customized creations.

3d proesthetic pictures renderings

3d space frame mesh

A custom-patterned mesh model forms the basis for fabricating an exo-skeletal structure, held together with titanium dust particles that are laser-sintered into place for strength and durability. This technique obviates the need for cumbersome central supports by spreading the loads in a sort of three-dimensional ‘space frame’, to borrow an architectural term. The resulting aesthetic is not only personalized but compelling – stylistically, it leaves choices up to the user and gives a unique look to each individual creation.

3d scanned bio limb
3d stage two rendering

3d printed limb connections

3d modeled exo prosthetic

Gizmag puts these developments in context: “There are over 2 million amputees in the United States with 185,000 amputations every year. More than 90 percent of these involve amputations of the lower limbs. Traditional prostheses can be prohibitively expensive due to their complexity and the specialized labor required to customize them for each patient. They also have a very mechanical and robotic look and feel about them, which can exacerbate the sense of loss and negatively affect the psychological wellbeing of some amputees.”

Childhood Obesity – Effects On Body and Mind

06 Oct

Children and the future have always been seen as signs of hope. However, with childhood obesity being in the way, the future has ceased to be promising and hopeful as parents often desired it to be. This is because obesity as a threat has lifelong and long-term effects that kids face in future.

Much disheartening possibilities, poor life quality and health, shorter longevity and compromised psychological health are just some of them. Thus with such desolate scenario, adults must now take action to give kids of this generation, a better future. For this to happen, it is vital for them to understand the causes and effects of obesity.

Causes of Childhood Obesity
Obesity in children is known to be caused by several factors including:

Genetics: Truth is, it is more likely for obese parents to bear obese kids. This shows the fact that genetics have momentous influence on obesity. However, just like any other genetic potential, all this can be controlled depending on the surrounding of the kid.

Lifestyle patterns: A person’s lifestyle is mostly influenced by family activities, culture and food preferences.

Environmental factors: Besides genetics and lifestyle patterns, there are other environmental factors, which are very influential. They are the major issues that the bigger society should curb. Some of these factors include processed food surplus with preservatives sold in groceries, food commercials that support unhealthy foods and new technologies that promote sedentary lifestyle among many others.

The good news is, all these can be restrained mostly through parental care. This is because of the wide scale patronage. But with working class moms of this generation, the whole situation again becomes more complex.

Effects of Childhood Obesity to the Body and Mind
Obesity among both adults and kids can bring grave medical disorders. Kids are prone to develop major health concerns such high blood pressure and high cholesterol that make them liable to heart illnesses as grownups. According to private study, Type 2 diabetes, which used to be a disease for adults, is nowadays noted to grow in obese kids. However, kids with normal BMI are free from such disorders and run a lesser threat of catching the same during maturity.

The most worrisome childhood obesity effect is mental health. This is because the effect can be immediate and could run to lifetime potentially if not addressed at an early stage. Obese kids have a low self-esteem and feel discriminated by other kids because they think they are different and worse than other kids. According to a study performed by Schwimmer in the year 2003, overweight kids compared their quality of life to those of youthful chemotherapy cancer patients.

The study further proceeds to reveal that various obesity-linked problems affect these childrens’ wellbeing. Such problems include bullying at school, sleep apnea, difficulties in playing many sports and fatigue. As if this is not enough, overweight kids are much more likely to drop school leading to miserable lives without employment or low salaries.

Help the Kids Feel Better
With a society that has been filled with biased cultures and many stereotypes, feeling discriminated by these kids is not so imaginary. Bullying comes from friends and adults like teachers and families. As the children internalize this feeling, they tend to feel more inferior, imperfect and also lose aspiration.

The powerful communication presented to them by the society at large about the idyllic body weight only help to exacerbate their psychological sufferings. This brings up a question that everyone should ask themselves. Does everything change for the better as these children become older disputed rather than conquered? There are very few instances when surmounting the odds made them successful. However, statistics show that many of them end up defeated with the rest of their lives becoming poor and depressed.

After all is said, there are various things all responsible adults can do to soften childhood obesity effects. In the United States, solutions by Surgeon General’s “Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity” were proposed. Most of them lied within the capacity of what parents may do for their kids. Regrettably, not all environmental features can be controlled by these kid’s parents. Thus, the only thing left is to hope that the society in this generation will wake up with this major call.

Urban Camo: Body Paint Blends Humans into City Backdrops

14 Aug

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Urban Body Paint Camo 1

Human figures blend into iconic New York City scenes, from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Guggenheim Museum, in artist Trina Merry‘s tromp l’eoil urban camouflage works. Each subject is carefully posed against a backdrop and painted in place to virtually disappear.

Urban Body Paint Camo 2

Urban Body Paint Camo 3

The work is reminiscent of that of Liu Bolin, the Beijing-based artist known as the ‘Invisible Man,’ who spends hours studying his chosen locations and painting himself and other subjects. It’s also another amazing example of surreal and sometimes mind-bending works of art that use human bodies as canvas.

Urban Body Paint 4

Urban Body Paint 5

“My surface is living, breathing human beings making this a highly relevant & immediate medium,” says Merry. “The painting is temporary, like a Tibetan sand painting, beginning to change into another work as soon as I stop painting, changing texture & color.”

Urban Body Paint 6

“For this reason highly intentional photography has become an important part of documenting my work… likewise, I work with y human canvases on poses, creating new opportunities for line & Form. My work is sometimes experienced live as an installation, for example, at museums, or preserved through photographs as limited edition fine art prints.”

Pocket Tent: Tiny Prefab Home Inflates Itself with Body Heat

08 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

portable pocket house inflated

A brilliant application of material science toward simple living, this portable self-inflating structure folds up into a manageable miniature package but expands to create a small dwelling space.

portable fold up home

Created by Martin Azua, the Basic House is a genius “habitable volume; foldable, inflatable and reversible … made from metalized polyester” that uses body or solar heat to inflate itself. As its designer explains, “is not a product, rather a concept of extreme reduction.”

portable modular prefab design

In a clever twist, this tiny portable space is made to be inverted so that it can deflect solar heat (for cold situations) in one configuration but capture it (to warm its interior) when reversed. Versatile and durable, the design could be used for everything from homeless shelters and travel tents to emergency housing and much more.

portable pocket travel tent

portable tent home concept

portable house interior exterior

More from its maker on his motivation: “Our habitat has turned into a space of consumption in which an unlimited number of products satisfy a series of needs created by complex systems and relations that are difficult to control. Cultures that maintain a more direct interaction with their environment show us that the idea of habitat can be understood in more essential and reasonable terms.”

Bio-Mobile: 3D-Printed Car Body Inspired by Turtle Shell

08 May

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

3D Printed Turtle Shell Car 1

3D printing enables the body of a car to be more complex than ever, yet fairly quick and economical to produce. EDAG, the world’s largest engineering consultant to the automobile industry, has revealed an incredibly intricate model inspired by the biomechanics of a turtle shell. The Genesis represents the possibilities that the world of 3D printing is opening up for the future of the industry.

3D Printed Turtle Shell Car 2

Automotive panels and parts are currently cut, punched, molded and tooled out of sheets of metal, fiberglass or composite materials. Additive 3D printing changes the game, with shapes built one tiny particle at a time, enabling an unprecedented level of precision.

3D Printed Turtle Shell Car 3

3D Printed Turtle Shell Car 4

The Genesis is made from thermoplastic carbon fiber, laid down layer-by-layer by computer-controlled robots for a result that’s extremely flexible and strong, yet lightweight. This process also cuts down on material waste. EDAG produced a 3D printed scale model to give us an idea of what it would look like full size.

3D Printed Turtle Shell Car 5

As of yet, the Genesis is still a concept, really just intended to demonstrate the capabilities of 3D printing in the automotive industry. But the Urbee 2 is an example of a 3D-printed vehicle that’s actually road-tested and nearly ready for mass production. This compact, lightweight 3-wheel design gets 290 miles per gallon fuel efficiency thanks to its incredibly aerodynamic chassis.
