Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX350 puts latest tech into travel zoom body

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX350 features an 18.2 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and the company’s latest Bionz X processor, and puts it into a slim body with a 20X, 25-500mm equivalent F3.5-6.5 lens. The WX350 also shoots up to ten shots at 10 fps, records 1080/60p video, and has a ‘Motion Shot feature’ for capturing things like golf swings. And, like most of Sony’s midrange cameras, the WX350 also has Wi-Fi with NFC. The camera will ship in March for $ 320.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II adds faster lens and AF to big-sensor body

Canon has announced the long-awaited follow-up to its PowerShot G1 X large-sensor compact: the G1 X Mark II. The G1 X II improves upon its predecessor in many ways. It’s smaller, features a faster 24-120mm equivalent F2.0-3.9 lens (with closer focusing distances), a 31-point AF system, dual lens rings, a touchscreen LCD that can tilt upward by 180°, and Wi-Fi with NFC. One added trick is that the G1 X II can shoot at 3:2 or 4:3 with the same field-of-view. The catch? No more optical viewfinder (though an EVF is optional). It will be available in April for $ 799.

Fujifilm X-T1 offers weather-resistant body and improved EVF

Following its first appearance in a teaser ad last week (and a comprehensive leak), the Fujifilm X-T1 makes its official debut. It’s a weather-resistant, SLR-styled mirrorless camera bearing a 16MP X-Trans CMOS II sensor, a chip it borrows from its X-E2 sibling. What really separates it from the X-E2 is the X-T1’s giant electronic viewfinder and triple control dials on its top plate. The X-T1 also has Wi-Fi built-in, and supports remote control from a smartphone.

Human Body Museum: Undulating Design Wins Competition

Its organic form fits its function as a Cité du Corps Humain (Museum of the Human Body) like a metaphorical glove – interlocked fingers were, in fact, part of the conceptual inspiration for this new museum in France.

With a medical school more than a millennium old, Montpellier is a fitting location for a nearly 10,000 square-meter place for people to “explore the human body from an artistic, scientific and societal approach through cultural activities, interactive exhibitions, performances and workshops.”

Working with local firm A+ Architecture, BIG was first shortlisted then selected to complete the project. Their ability to format compelling modes of visual communication no doubt helped improve their prospects with the jury.

Weaving together nature and the city, a series of indoor and outdoor spaces interlock to shape programmatic and public areas. “The museum’s roof functions as an ergonomic garden – a dynamic landscape of vegetal and mineral surfaces that allow the park’s visitors to explore and express their bodies in various ways – from contemplation to the performance – from relaxing to exercising – from the soothing to the challenging.”

2D or Not 2D? Body Paint Illusion Makes Faces Look Flat

Three-dimensional human bodies are transformed to look like paintings on a flat surface in this curious collaboration between a makeup artist, a photographer and a retoucher. In his series Art of Face, Alexander Kholkhlov explores the ways in which people can function as canvases, using body paint to obscure their humanity.

For a set entitled ’2D or Not 2D?’ makeup artist Valeriya Kutsan applies body paint in such a way that it’s sometimes near-impossible to tell that what you’re looking at isn’t just a flat painting. Says Kholkhlov, “”Valeriya used different techniques of face painting so you can see a lot of variations – from sketch and graphic arts to water-colour and oil-paintings. ”

Olympus Stylus 1 puts high-end superzoom features into OM-D body

Olympus has thrown its hat into the premium superzoom ring with the Stylus 1. It combines a larger-than-average 1/1.7″-type BSI-CMOS sensor with a 28-300mm equivalent, F2.8 zoom lens, high resolution EVF, ‘hybrid’ control ring, and Wi-Fi – and packs it all into a compact body that strongly resembles the OM-D EM-5. Other notable features include a built-in ND filter, tilting touchscreen LCD, in-camera Raw processing, and 1080p movie recording.

Fujifilm XQ1 puts X-Trans sensor into an ultra-compact body

Fujifilm’s new XQ1 enthusiast compact takes the fast lens and slim design from last year’s XF1 and adds a 12 megapixel 2/3″ X-Trans II CMOS sensor with hybrid AF. The XQ1 features a 25-100mm (equiv.) F1.8-4.9 lens with optical image stabilization and claimed focus times as fast as 0.06 seconds. Other features include a 3-inch LCD, lens control ring, focus peaking, Raw support, 1080/60p video, and Wi-Fi. You’ll be able to pick one up for yourself this month for under $ 500.

Body Paint Illusions Transform Human Models into Animals

Intricately painted and carefully posed, the human bodies serving as canvases for artist Gesine Marwedel are virtually unrecognizable as they morph into swans, flamingos and iguanas. The 25-year-old German painter employs performance artists to bring her colorful illusions to life, leaving their faces and other body parts visible as part of each composition.

The ability to contort into unusual positions is a crucial element of making each of these incredible three-dimensional paintings work. Each photograph depicts not only the painted animal, but also its grace and movement.

“Body painting is not just paint on a living canvas, it is picking up the body shapes in a subject and the painting on the body,” Marwedel told PSFK. “It is the transformation of a human being into a breathing, moving, living work of art.”

Marwedel began to explore body art after providing therapy for disabled and autistic children through speech and music. See more of her work at her website, or in person at the World Body Painting Festival, to be held in Austria in July 2013.

Pentax announces flash and body cap lens reference designs at CP Plus

CP+ 2013: Pentax has shown two prototype products at the CP+ 2013 trade show in Japan: a bounce flash and a body cap lens for the Q-system. The flash is tentatively named the AF360FGZ II and has a guide number of 36, vertical and horizontal bounce capability, and is expected to ship this Summer. The ‘Mount Cap Lens’ is limited to the Q-mount camera line, and includes what appears to be a small hyper-focal lens which Pentax says will produce a ‘toy-camera-like visual effect,’ and is also expected this Summer 2013.
