Sigma announces sd Quattro and sd Quattro H Foveon mirrorless cameras

Sigma has announced two mirrorless ILCs: the Sigma sd Quattro and the sd Quattro H. Both cameras use the company’s full-depth SA lens mount as used in its SLRs, and are built around APS-C and APS-H sized sensors, respectively. The cameras share a body design with a built-in viewfinder that, while unusual, appears more ergonomically conventional than the recent DP Quattro series of large-sensor compacts.

Both cameras feature on-sensor phase detection as part of a hybrid AF system, which should mean they work effectively with existing SA-mount lenses. The down-side is that it reduces the range of lenses that could be added via adapter.

Both cameras use the latest, ‘Quattro’ version of Sigma’s Foveon technology, which measures different color information based on how deeply into the sensor it is able to penetrate. The Quattro design features full resolution at the top (predominantly blue-sensing) layer but then 1/4 of that resolution for the two deeper layers used to interpret information about red and green color components.

The APS-H sensor features 25.5MP in its top layer, which the company considers equivalent to the capture of a 51 megapixel sensor using the conventional Bayer design. This 26.6 x 17.9mm sensor is around 30% larger than the more common APS-C size, but it’s currently unclear what proportion of Sigma’s ‘DC’ lenses designed for APS-C offer a large enough image circle for use with the camera.

The APS-C version uses a phase-detection capable variant of the sensor used in the existing DP Quattros, offering 19.6MP on its top layer. Sigma says this should offer a level of detail comparable with a 39MP Bayer chip. (Foveon explained the logic of these claims when we spoke to them a few years ago).

The cameras feature two rear screens, one of which displays the camera’s current settings. They also feature USB 3.0 interfaces. A vertical/battery grip will be available.

Both the sd Quattro and sd Quattro H feature similar design aspects with a compact form consistent with the dp Quattro line, making them highly portable and utilizing the Foveon Quattro sensor for exceptional imaging quality and fast processing. A magnesium alloy body makes the sd Quattro and sd Quattro H durable and rugged, while a dust- and splash-proof design makes it ideal for photographers facing harsh conditions. In addition to the new body design, both cameras boast a list of useful advancements. These include a two-mode Autofocus detection that combines Phase Detection for focus speed and Contrast Detection for focus accuracy. The focus settings have also been enhanced with such modes as Movement Prediction, Face Detection, Free Movement, Focus Peaking and a variety of others. The new 2.3 megapixel viewfinder displays close to 100% of the field of view and when placed in “Auto” will toggle between the viewfinder when the user has the camera to their eye and then to the LCD when the user lowers the camera. A new “Super-Fine Detail” mode brings out the full potential of the Quattro sensor by capturing seven different exposures with one shot and merging them for exceptional dynamic range (images can be extracted individually as well). Meanwhile an updated algorithm for the Auto White Balance allows for greater accuracy, even with multiple light sources.

While the sd Quattro and sd Quattro H are similar in physical design details, they stand apart when their Foveon sensors are compared. The sd Quattro utilizes the same sensor found in the dp Quattro line and produces image quality comparable to that of a 39 megapixel Bayer-pattern sensor on resolution testing. The stacked silicon Foveon Direct Imaging sensor captures all detail information on the top 19.6 megapixel layer along with all color information for the Blue channel, while the two five-megapixel layers below capture Red and Green color information, all without the need for a low pass filter. Merged together they create incredible image quality that is comparable to medium format files. The sd Quattro H boasts a larger APS-H sensor (26.6×17.9mm) than the sd Quattro and can produce images equivalent to that of a 51-megapixel Bayer-pattern sensor camera on resolution testing. The sensor structure is similar to that of the sd Quattro but uses a 25.5 megapixels on the top layer of the sensor that captures the detail information. Both cameras use the latest Dual TRUE III image processor and take full advantage of the Art, Contemporary and Sport line Global Vision lenses that are made for high megapixel cameras. Like all Sigma Cameras, RAW (X3F) data can processed via Sigma Photo Pro, which offers editing options, including Monochrome mode to take advantage of the incredible monochrome images the Foveon sensor captures.

Sigma announces 30mm F1.4 for E-mount and Micro 4/3 and 50-100mm F1.8 Art for APS-C

Sigma has added two new fast-aperture lenses to its Art and Contemporary lineups. 

For owners of Canon, Nikon and Sigma APS-C bodies there’s the 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM Art, which is equivalent to 75-150mm. This lens has a redesigned Hyper Sonic Motor, nine-blade rounded aperture and internal zoom. Being a weighty lens (1490g/3.3lbs), it also has a built-in tripod socket.

The other lens is for Sony E-mount and Micro Four Thirds bodies, and it’s a fast 30mm F1.4 prime, equivalent to 45mm and 60mm, respectively. This lens uses a stepping motor for fast and quiet focus during video and weighs just 263g/9.3oz. 

The 30mm F1.4 will ship in mid-March at an MSRP of $ 339, while the 50-100mm F1.8 is expected in late April priced at $ 1099.

SLR Magic announces anamorphic lenses for filmmakers

SLR Magic, a company known for making affordable optics and accessories for filmmakers, has announced a new set of anamorphic cinema lenses that can be adapted to a variety of lens mounts. The PL mount ANAMORPHOT-CINE line of lenses includes the 35mm T2.4, the 50mm T2.8 and the 70mm T4, all of which can be adapted for Canon EF, Nikon F, Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-mount.

Anamorphic lenses are frequently used by filmmakers to capture wide-screen aspect ratios commonly associated with a more cinematic look. This is accomplished by squeezing the image horizontally onto the sensor or film to capture a wider horizontal angle of view. The image is later ‘de-squeezed’ either in post processing or by a special lens attached to a projector. 

Digital filmmakers sometimes mimic the anamorphic effect by cropping off the top and the bottom of the frame in post processing to create a wider aspect ratio, however this effectively results in throwing away much of the data captured by the sensor. Additionally, anamorphic lenses are directly responsible for some of the looks often associated with cinematic productions, such as horizontal lens flare and elongated bokeh. The ANAMORPHOT-CINE lenses have a 1.33x squeeze factor, making it possible to create a 2.35:1 image from a 16:9 sensor.

The ANAMORPHOT-CINE lenses also provide an alternative to anamorphic adapters that are often used to create an anamorphic image using a standard lens.

The new lenses will be available for demo at the BVE Expo in London from February 23-25. Pricing is yet to be announced.

The SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 1.33x does this by compressing a 33% wider field of view to fit the width of the 16:9 sensor/negative without compressing image height. 

The SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 1.33x create a unique “artifact” such as horizontal lens flare, commonly referred to as anamorphic streaks, and may create slightly elongated bokeh. Over the history of cinema, these same stylish effects have contributed to the cinematic “look” of epic motion picture photography. Characteristics that shape this anamorphic “look” come from “front-mounted” anamorphic designs such as the SLR Magic Anamorphot while “rear-mounted” anamorphic designs have more suppressed anamorphic characteristics.

Oh, wow… Sony announces 24MP a6300 with incredible AF and 8 fps live view bursts

Sony has introduced the long-awaited update to its popular a6000 mirrorless camera: the a6300. Featuring a newly developed 24 Megapixel APS-C sensor and a completely revamped ‘4D’ AF system with 425 phase-detection AF points, the a6300 sits at the top of Sony’s APS-C mirrorless lineup. It also appears poised to break down one of the last remaining strongholds of DSLR by a live feed of the action in between frames, with minimal blackout, at a respectable 8 fps shooting rate, with AF.

Capable of continuous shooting at up to 11 fps with AF, the a6300’s 425-point hybrid AF system features ‘high-density’ tracking, which dynamically activated AF points around a subject and adjusts them depending on the motion of the subject itself. The 425 phase-detect points, impressively, reach all the way out to the corners of the frame.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the a6300 is capable of uninterrupted live view at up to 8 fps, potentially addressing one of the biggest shortcomings of mirrorless cameras when it comes to fast action shooting. Traditionally, mirrorless cameras tend to show only a stop-motion sequence of last-shot images at the highest shooting frame-rate, which makes it hard to follow a subject and keep an AF point over it. Live view in between short blackouts at 8 fps brings the a6300 much closer to the experience of a DSLR with optical viewfinder. At the launch event in New York this morning, Sony showed a video reminiscent of Nikon’s recent DSLR vs. mirrorless comparison for fast action shooting at CES, albeit comparing the a6300 to a <$ 1000 DSLR. Results looked impressive.

Notably, the a6300 can use all of its 425 phase-detect points to quickly focus A-mount lenses using a LA-EA3 adapter, which indicates this is now a standard feature that will be available across future E-mount cameras. We also expect phase-detect AF to work with other 3rd party lenses using adapters like the Metabones Smart Adapter.

The a6300 is capable of 4K video capture at up to 100 Mbps. The camera uses a 20MP (6K) region of the sensor to offer 2.4x oversampled 4K video with full pixel readout, and no pixel binning. Videographers should be able to expect sharp, low noise footage, even in low light since almost the entire sensor is sampled.

While the progress in technology is impressive, lack of true weather sealing, a touchscreen, or direct AF point selection with a dedicated joystick or control will continue to be problematic for some. The a6300 will be available in March for $ 1000 body only.

Unrivaled AF Performance

Sony’s new ?6300 camera builds upon the acclaimed 4D FOCUS performance of the ?6000 model, utilizing a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines high-speed phase detection AF with extremely accurate contrast AF and allows it to capture and lock on to moving subjects in as little as 0.05 seconds1.  The camera’s High-density Tracking AF technology positions 425 phase detection AF points over nearly the entire field of view, allowing it  to accurately focus throughout a wide area – even on small, fast objects that other cameras would fail to recognize. 

In addition to the extensive AF coverage, the ?6300 debuts a new High-density tracking AF technology that significantly improves subject detection and tracking performance.  This new technology can quickly activate a large number of AF points surrounding a subject – approximately 7.5 times more density than the ?6000 – and intelligently adjust them in accordance with the subject’s motion.  This is a particularly powerful feature when used with high-speed 11 fps continuous shooting or the new 8 fps continuous live-view mode, which provides 100% accurate framing for fast moving subjects on the LCD screen or viewfinder.

Of note is the fact that the camera’s 425 phase detection AF points, enhanced tracking and focus accuracy are all available on the ?6300 when using A-mount lenses4 with a mount adaptor like the Sony LA-EA3.  This is a first for Sony E-mount interchangeable lens cameras with an APS-C sized sensor, as the only other cameras to feature this capability are the full-frame ?7R II and ?7 II models.

Other enhancements to the ?6300 include silent shooting functionality the ability to use AF in focus magnifier mode, expanded flexible spot AF, Eye AF in AF-C mode and more.

In order to maximize efficiency and overall camera performance, the ?6300 features a new 24.2 MP sensor that is an ideal match for its BIONZ X image processing engine. 

The new image sensor employs copper wiring in its structure, which improves light collection efficiency and significantly accelerates readout speed. The BIONZ X processor features an upgraded image processing algorithm designed to maximize the sensor’s overall capabilities.  Together, the two key components work together to produce images with low noise and exceptional resolution in sensitivity settings up to ISO512003, in particular in the mid-to-high sensitivity range. 

Ultimate 4K Resolution and Other Professional Video Capabilities

In another first for non-full-frame Sony interchangeable lens camera, the new ?6300 offers internal 4K movie recording in Super 35mm format.  When shooting in 4K, the camera uses full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect 20 megapixels of information – approximately 2.4x5 (6K equivalent) as many pixels as 4K UHD and then oversamples the information to produce high quality  footage with exceptional detail and depth.   

The camera utilizes the XAVC S codec6 during video shooting, which records at a high bit rate of 100 Mbps7 during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during standard Full HD shooting, ensuring maximum detail and clarity in both video formats.  Additionally, the camera will focus approximately twice as fast as its predecessor during movie shooting thanks to its new and improved AF system.  AF speed and AF tracking sensitivity are also adjustable for expanded creativity.  

Other professional caliber video features include the ability to record Full HD at 120 fps at 100 Mbps7, another first for ? interchangeable lens cameras with APS-C sized sensors.  This mode allows footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow motion video files in Full HD8 (24p or 30p) resolution with AF tracking.   The new ?6300 also offers S-Log gamma recording9 for wide dynamic range shooting – approximately 14-stop latitude in S-Log3 gamma setting – and supports S-Gamut for a wider color space.  Both options allow for greater creativity for processing video post-production.

Also included on the new camera is a microphone line input that accepts external microphones and also supports XLR input with Sony’s XLR adapter kit, as well as Gamma Display Assist, a new function that allows users to monitor images or check focus when recording S-Log movies. The new model has enhanced Zebra functionality for greater exposure control.  Picture profile settings are available, as well as Time Code / User Bit and much more. 

Enhanced Operability and Ergonomics

The ?6300 camera is equipped with a high contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 2.4 million dots that offers exceptional corner-to-corner visibility.  There is also a new mode available for the viewfinder that allows display of images at 120 fps, ensuring that action is displayed smoothly with very few afterimages, making subject tracking through the Tru-finder easier than ever.    

Aesthetically, the new ?6300 camera features an extremely solid feel in hand thanks to its robust, magnesium alloy design.  It can be customized to fit nearly any shooting style or preferences, with 9 customizable buttons that one of 64 different functions can be assigned to.  The camera adds a digital level gauge as well as upgraded dust and moisture resistance10, a reinforced lens mount structure and a new shutter release button and mode dial with improved operability and grip.

The new ?6300 camera is Wi-Fi® and NFC compatible and fully functional with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile™ application available for Android™ and iOS platforms, as well as Sony’s growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps™, which add a variety of creative capabilities to the camera.  It also supports QR code for easy connection to non-NFC smart phones.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony ?6300 interchangeable lens camera will be available in March for about $ 1,000 for the camera body or for about $ 1,150 paired with a 16-50mm F3.5 – F5.6 kit lens (model SELP1650).  Prices for the Canadian market will be about $ 1,350 CA for the body and about $ 1,500 CA for the camera kit.  It will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout each region.

Canon announces flagship EOS-1D X Mark II full-frame digital SLR

Canon has announced its new flagship DSLR, the full-frame EOS-1D X Mark II. It features a new 20.2MP CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel AF, and uses a pair of Dual DIGIC 6+ processors to capture 4K video and shoot continuously at up to 16 fps. The camera has a native ISO of 100-51200, expandable to 409600.

The new 61-point autofocus system has 41 cross-type sensors and 24% larger frame coverage than its predecessor. Its center point is sensitive to -3EV in OneShot AF. In live view the camera uses the latest iteration of Canon’s Dual Pixel AF technology for high-speed focusing in OneShot mode. The metering system has also been updated to use a 360k-pixel RGB+IR sensor, which the company says improves subject – including face – detection and tracking.

As with its predecessors, the 1D X is as rugged a camera as you’ll find. It’s magnesium alloy body is fully weather-sealed and has a shutter that will last for approximately 400,000 cycles. In addition to its large optical viewfinder (now with better, adjustable AF point illumination), the Mark II has a 3.2″ Clear View II LCD with 1.62 million dots, up from 1.04 million dots. The screen is touch-enabled, but only for autofocus point selection in Live View. Another new addition is a built-in GPS (with an e-compass), which sits in a ‘hump’ on the top of the viewfinder. Otherwise, the design of the Mark II is very similar to that of its predecessor.

Performance-wise, the 1D X II can shoot continuously at 14 fps with autofocus, and if you lock the mirror up, you can shoot up to 16 fps with locked focus and exposure. If you’re using the older LP-E4N battery, the top shooting speeds drop to the same frame rates as the 1D X (12/14 fps). If you’re using a CFast card you can take an unlimited number of JPEGs or a whopping 170 Raw images in a single burst, or 12 seconds of shooting at 14 fps. The 1D X II also has a slot for standard CompactFlash cards. When it comes to connecting to a PC you can choose from the camera’s USB 3.0 or Ethernet ports. Wi-Fi requires the use of Canon’s $ 600 WFT-E8 wireless file transmitter.

One of the most significant additions to the 1D X II is support for 4K (DCI) video capture. It can capture 4K video at 60p using the M-JPEG codec (which allows for easy frame grabs) as well as 1080p at frame rates of up to 120 fps. You’ll need to use a CFast card in order to record more than a few seconds of 4K video though. Dual Pixel AF enables continuous autofocus in video, and touch focus makes the experience a breeze. The camera does not offer focus peaking or zebra patterns natively, but they are visible when using an external recorder. As one would expect given its place in Canon’s lineup, the 1D X Mark II has both headphone and mic jacks.

The EOS-1D X Mark II will be available in April for $ 5999 (body only), or bundled with a 64GB CFast card and reader for $ 6299.

Phottix announces next generation of Odin TTL flash controllers

Flash and accessory manufacturer Phottix has released details of the second generation of Odin flash controllers that will go on sale mid-February. The Odin II units, which allow wireless TTL control of hotshoe and portable studio flash units, will add two extra control groups and 28 additional channels to the radio trigger’s reach, and will make the user interface easier to handle. 

The Odin system, which is compatible with Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras can be used with the company’s battery-powered Indra 500 and 300 portable studio flash heads, as well as the company’s Mitros hotshoe flash units. The new models also add an AF assist lamp, 10 new custom functions and digital ID for channels 5 to 32 to ensure the correct units are communicating. 

The Odin system is divided into transmitters and receivers, and Phottix’s own flash units have the receivers built-in. Photographers using Canon, Nikon or Sony branded flash units can use their hotshoe flash units with an Odin receiver to take advantage of the better range and connection of radio transmission over the line-of-sight systems camera brands tend to produce. Radio also works better when shooting outside in bright conditions.

The company says that new firmware will be released for the Mitros and Indra flash units to make them compatible with the new features. 

The Canon and Nikon models will be available first, with those for Sony cameras arriving in late April. The transmitters will cost £160, while receivers will be £125.

Unrivalled Control and Streamlined User Interface

The Odin II allows more control than ever before.  The controls are logical, simple to use, and allow extremely fast adjustments.

More Channels and Digital ID

To take advantage of the Phottix Odin II, a total of 32 channels can be used, channels 5 to 32 use the full functionality of the Odin II receiver, including a user-set digital ID for the ultimate in secure triggering.  Users can remotely control Speedlight zoom settings, providing the perfect coverage from a wide angle to a spot light.  When shooting with the Phottix Indra360/500 series, the Odin II transmitter also offers remote modelling light control and full light ratio controls.

High Speed Sync and Overdrive Sync

High Speed Sync with TTL flashes and Overdrive Sync with manual enable flash photography at up to 1/8000 second for creative photographers.  The newly added AF assist light makes autofocus a breeze in dimly lit locations.  An additional ten custom functions allow users to customise the Odin II, including switching on/off the audible beep, screen brightness, an AF Illuminator function and the ODS system control functionality, as well as a full factory reset should you need it.

Nikon Japan announces price increases of up to 18% for lenses and flash units

Nikon has released details of price increases it will implement in the Japanese market from the beginning of March this year. The changes will affect a total of 73 of its DX and FX lenses, as well as three teleconverters. In addition, 21 lenses for the Nikon 1 system will be included, the FT1 mount adapter and six Speedlite flash units along with the systems associated wireless remotes. Newer lenses, such as the recently announced AF-P 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G/VR, the 200-500mm F5.6E ED VR, the 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR and the 24mm F1.8G ED are not included in the list. 

The degree of increase varies across the board, but some products, such as the SB-300 flashgun, will face a price hike of close to 18%. Others though will be increased by less than 5%. 

The company cites pressures from increasing costs of raw materials for the price rises, and claims that it has done all it can to absorb the additional costs itself.

As the information was intended only for the Japanese market there is no mention of the rises coming into force in other regions. We’ll update this story with more details as and when we receive them.

Yongnuo announces YN360 LED light wand

Chinese lighting manufacturer ShenZhen Yongnuo Photographic Equipment Co has announced a variable temperature LED wand for still and video photographers. The Yongnuo YN360 features a 39.5cm/15.5in light board that is equipped with 160 LEDs designed to match daylight, 160 LEDs to match tungsten lighting and 40 further LEDs that are RGB SMD lamps. The wand can be used to produce light that blends in with ambient lighting in a wide range of conditions by varying the mix of 3200K and 5500K LEDs, and also be used to create a spectrum of colors by mixing the red, green and blue LED sources. 

The company says that the color of the wand and the brightness of its illumination will be controllable via a smartphone app and physical dials on the wand’s handle, and claims that its technology and encoders allow the light to be dimmed without altering its color. 

The YN360 will be powered by Sony NP-F type lithium-ion cells, and we should expect two hours at its 2560-lumen brightest output in the color temperature mode, and four hours in RGB mode, from a single charge of the recommended NP-F770 battery. A mains adapter will also be available. 

The Yongnuo YN360 should go on sale by the middle of February, though the company has yet to release information regarding its price. For more information see the Yongnuo store blog.

Leica announces €80,000 prize fund for 2016 Oskar Barnack Awards

Leica has increased the value and volume of prizes on offer for the forthcoming Oskar Barnack awards for 2016, with the winner taking home €25,000 in cash on top of a €10,000 M system camera and lens. The newcomer prize has been doubled to €10,000 in cash, and the winner will also receive a Leica rangefinder kit. 

The competition theme will be the relationship between man and the environment, and entrants are expected to submit a series of 10-12 images that work together ‘with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creatively and innovatively’. As well as the main award there will be ten awards of €2500. 

Submitted pictures must have been taken in 2015 or 2016, and all entrants for the main competition must be professional photographers. Prospective professionals who are 25 years old or younger can enter the Newcomer Award – for which there will be a main prize-winner and a further ten photographers will have their work ‘recognized’.  

An online public voting process will also take place via the i-shot-it website, and the winner of that will receive €2500 as well. Voters will be entered into a draw for Leica compact cameras.

Prestigious photographic competition continues in 36th year with brand new features and prizes

Now in its 36th year, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, an international photographic competition for professional photographers as well as up-and-coming photographers under the age of 25, continues its rich tradition in 2016 with numerous new features and significantly more attractive prizes. 

The recipients of this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Awards will be honoured at an official prize-giving ceremony, to be held in Germany for the first time in many years. Furthermore, the prize value for the winner of the ‘Newcomer Award’ has been doubled to a total of 10,000 euros and, for the first time, the work of ten further entrants will be recognised. 

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2016 competition is open for entries from 1 March 2016. Photographers interested in taking part can now submit their applications and photographic projects online, with a closing date of 15 April 2016. With prizes amounting to a total cash value of 80,000 euros, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award is one of the industry’s most prestigious photographic competitions. A judging panel of prominent international experts selects the winners, focusing particularly on the photographers’ unerring powers of observation, and how they show the relationship between man and the environment, expressed graphically in portfolios of up to twelve images.

Fujifilm announces its flagship 24 megapixel X-Pro2 mirrorless camera

Fujifilm has released the long-awaited followup to its flagship X-Pro1 mirrorless camera, aptly named the X-Pro2. While similar in design to its predecessor, virtually everything else about the X-Pro2 is new.

First is an all-new 24.3 megapixel X-Trans CMOS III sensor, making the X-Pro2 the highest resolution Fujifilm camera yet. It can capture images at sensitivities as high as ISO 51200 and also supports compressed Raw (a first for the X-series). The camera’s focal plane shutter tops out at 1/8000 sec (with an x-sync speed of 1/250 sec), with the electronic shutter offering speeds up to 1/32000 sec.

Another big leap is in terms of autofocus. The X-Pro2 has a Hybrid AF system with 273 total points, of which 77 are phase-detect and cover 40% of the frame. Fujifilm claims the X-Pro2 offers the fastest AF of any of its X-series models, though it’s worth keeping in mind that performance will vary based on lens – many lenses in the line, particularly primes, tend to have slower focus motors that can significantly affect continuous AF performance. 

While the X-Pro1 was already a sturdy camera, its successor is even more durable. Its magnesium alloy body has 61 points which are sealed against dust and moisture. It offers direct control for shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation via dials on the top plate. The X-Pro2 is Fujifilm’s first camera with dual memory card slots, both of which take SD cards. The first slot is compatible with ultra-high speed UHS-II media.

Fujifilm has also updated the X-Pro1’s hybrid viewfinder, bringing it more in line with what’s found on the X100T. It can still be both an optical or electronic viewfinder, with the resolution of the EVF panel being bumped to 2.36 million dots. X-Pro1 users have always been able to overlay shooting data and bright lines onto the optical view, but now there’s a ‘tab’ at the lower-right which can display a projected LCD display showing a magnified view of the focus point, peaking, or a digital split prism. In addition to the hybrid viewfinder, the X-Pro2 also has a 3″ LCD with 1.62 million dots.

Some other new features of note include a monochrome Acros film simulation mode ‘for smooth tones’, a grain effect, interval shooting, 1080/60p video and, of course, Wi-Fi support.

The X-Pro2 will be available next month at a price of $ 1699.95.

As the new pinnacle of X-Series photography, the X-Pro2 gives professional photographers an innovative Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder capable of instantly switching between optical and electronic finders, a new 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor for truly remarkable image resolution, and a new X-Processor Pro that delivers dramatically improved response times for unmatched performance.

By combining these features with the ultra-high image quality of FUJINON X-Mount lenses and the world-renowned color reproduction technology refined over more than 80 years as a photographic film leader, the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 delivers the best ever results from an X-Series camera.

Advanced performance for professionals
The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 has the world’s first Hybrid Multi Viewfinder that allows photographers to take advantage of both an optical finder for a direct view of the subject as well as an electronic viewfinder to preview settings. The ability to instantly switch between these two types of viewfinders was first installed on the FUJIFILM X100 in 2011, but the latest version found on the X-Pro2 is the most advanced. It now features a Multi-Magnification function that automatically switches viewfinder magnification according to the lens in use and an Electronic Rangefinder that simultaneously displays the electronic viewfinder on top of the optical viewfinder.

Working together, the newly developed 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and the high-performance X-Processor Pro image engine deliver pictures with a perceived resolution far greater than the actual number of pixels used. Moreover, the X-Pro2 now boasts 4x the processing speed of conventional image processing engines, which in turn gives users increased response times, even with the increased resolution. The powerful X-Processor Pro dramatically improves a wide range of response times, including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, the shortest shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, a shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds, and autofocus speeds as fast as 0.06 seconds. And with the option to use compressed RAW files, the X-Pro2’s performance and functionality now exceed the needs of professional photographers, including faster live view and even higher definition movies.

Cutting-edge autofocus system
The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 uses a new autofocus (AF) system that gives users an expanded number of selectable focusing points with 273 AF points. 77 of these are phase detection – for greater functionality and faster autofocus. With the X-Pro2, approximately 40% of the imaging area is now covered by fast, precise phase detection AF pixels, which means focusing speeds when photographing moving subjects have improved dramatically. By combining the processing capabilities of the new X-Processor Pro with a contrast AF readout speed that is 2x faster than before, the X-Pro2 delivers the fastest AF performance ever in an X-Series camera.

Weather-resistant for challenging shooting environments
The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 has a robust, weather-resistant body to meet the needs of professional photographers in tough shooting environments. The camera’s chassis is made from four pieces of magnesium alloy and is sealed with more than 61 points, making it dust-proof, splash-proof and capable of operating in temperatures as low as 14°F. In addition, it has dual SD card slots, for more reliable image storage and less card changing while on location.

Improved layout and new user interface design
The new FUJIFILM X-Pro2 embodies the true craftsmanship that the X-Series is known for around the world. The shutter speed dial, exposure compensation dial and finder switching lever are all milled from aluminum for a premium look and comfortable feel. The ISO sensitivity dial is now built-in to the shutter speed dial so camera settings can be confirmed at a glance without having to turn the power on. And the command dial position has been added to the exposure compensation dial. Selecting this function switches exposure compensation operation to the front command dial and expands the range to ±5EV.

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2 features Command dials on both the front and rear of the camera. And by adding a push function, they are easier to use, and still retain dust and water resistance. There are six function buttons to allow easier access to regularly used functions, and a new Focus Lever enables users to quickly select a focusing point, speeding up operation.

Photographers will find a new, easy-to-use graphical user interface design in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 with fresh categories added to the tabs on the menu screen, allowing faster access to the item required. Users can register a maximum of 16 frequently used items in the new My Menu feature, and when combined with the 16 items from the Q Menu, a total of 32 shortcuts can be created.

The viewfinder display in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 now offers a greater level of customization so it can further match the individual needs of the photographer. The X-Pro2 gives users a Bright Frame Simulation function in the optical viewfinder mode so the angle of view of each focal length can be confirmed without having to replace the lens, so the user can change lenses more accurately.
