Ilford Photo announces ordering program for unusual sizes of sheet film

UK film manufacturer Harman Technologies has announced that orders are being taken for unusual sheet and roll film sizes in its annual program for supplying low volume and custom-sized Ilford Photo materials for vintage and large format camera owners. Rather than making odd sizes on the chance that they will sell, the company uses it Ultra Large Format (ULF) program to collect orders from the public and institutions through specified retailers and sets aside time especially to produce film to fit old cameras.

The company offers these odd sizes in Ilford FP4 Plus, HP5 Plus and Delta 100 Professional black and white emulsions. Sheet materials as large as 20 x 24in. and as small as 2.25 x 3.25in. are on offer, as well as roll film in 46mm (127 film) and 70mm widths. Sheet sized film is also available in rolls for users to cut themselves, and can be ordered in widths of up to 20in (x 50ft). Some sizes have no minimum order volumes and can be ordered as a single box.

The options available reflect what has been asked for over the past 10 years. HARMAN is happy to consider any other size suggestions but do not guarantee to make them available.
For sheet sizes an order for just one single box can be made, but for roll sizes this is not possible due to potentially excessive waste. Please see the minimums and multiples required next to the appropriate roll size.

Note:
Orders must be placed with the listed ULF reseller partners no later than Friday 27th May.

The UK factory will start to ship orders to Distributors during August and end users should check with the local ULF reseller for expected arrival dates.

Sony announces 50mm F1.8 and 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 full-frame lenses

Sony today announced a pair of FE-mount full-frame lenses for its Alpha and NEX mirrorless cameras. The first is an FE 50mm F1.8 prime lens, giving photographers a considerably less expensive option compared to the Zeiss 55mm F1.8 currently on the market. This compact and lightweight lens is priced at $ 249 and will ship in May.

The other lens is the 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS, which is the longest FE-mount tele-zoom available. It features four aspherical and two ED elements, optical image stabilization, and a Nano AR coating to reduce flare and ghosting. The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 0.9m/3ft, and uses a linear actuator for smooth and silent autofocus. The 70-300 will also be available in May at a price of $ 1199.

New FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS Telephoto Zoom Lens

Sony’s longest reaching E-mount lens to date, the new FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70300G) features a state-of-the-art optical design including four aspherical glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and Sony’s Nano AR coating, which all work together to effectively suppress spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration.  This ensures beautiful high-resolution results for both still and video shooting.

Leica announces price and details of its 35mm F1.4 lens for the T system

Leica has formally announced the specifications and price of the Summilux-TL 35mm F1.4 lens for its T-series mirrorless camera. The lens, which is available now, will cost $ 2395/£1650. Leica says that the lens performs at its best wide open, with maximum resolution achieved at F1.4 – though its own MTF charts suggest this is only true in the center of the imaging circle.

Designed to suit the Leica T’s compact footprint, the Summilux-TL F1.4 can also be used on the Leica SL in crop-sensor mode.

Made with a total of 12 elements in 8 groups and a closest focus distance of 0.4m, the lens acts as a standard focal length for the APS-C sensor of the T. Focus can be achieved manually as well as in auto mode, and the smallest aperture on offer is F16.

The lens measures 77 x 70mm/3.0 x 2.7in, weighs 428g/15oz without the hood and will be available in anodized black or silver. Leica originally announced that it would make the lens when it released firmware 1.4 for the T at the end of 2015. We should expect a Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm F2.8 ASPH in the autumn.

Adobe announces Technology Previews for Lightroom on the Web with subject-identifying Search feature

Adobe has launched Technology Previews for Lightroom on the Web, allowing Lightroom users to test new features before they are officially rolled out. To get things started, Adobe has released a Technology Preview that introduces ‘Search,’ a feature that uses new image analysis technology to identify photos based on subjects. 

According to Adobe, the search function lets users search for any photograph that has been synced online using Lightroom on the Web, Lightroom for mobile, or one of the Lightroom desktop applications. Search terms like ‘food’ or ‘flowers’ will reportedly be indexed whether or not the photos contain any keywords. Users can access the feature by first logging into Lightroom on the Web, then clicking the ‘Lr’ menu in the top left corner and selecting ‘Technology Preview’ from the menu. Search will then index synced photos.

The new search function is only available in English, though Adobe says it will be provided for other languages once the final version is officially rolled out. Before that happens, though, Adobe plans to expand Search’s functionality, adding support for metadata searches and more.

Leica announces price and availability of 90-280mm F2.8-4 zoom for SL camera

Leica has announced the price of its second lens for the new SL system and says it will go on sale within the next couple of weeks. The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4 is set to cost £4650/$ 6395, and will join the existing Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm F2.8-4 ASPH standard zoom lens that was released with the SL body.

The 90-280mm F2.8-4 was announced at the same time the SL camera was launched, as was a Leica Summilux-SL 1:1, 4/50mm ASPH which is due for release at the end of this year – possibly around the time of the Photokina show in Germany.

This latest lens is claimed to offer very fast AF, as well as 3.5-stops of optical image stabilization. Sealed against the weather and dust, the lens features a closest focusing range of 0.6-1.4m and can manage a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.8, so Leica says it is suitable for close-up work as well as for shooting at normal distances.

Sales of the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4 will begin on 24th March. For more information see the Leica website.

Leica Camera has today announced the latest addition to the Leica SL-System lens portfolio: the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4.
 
Available from 24 March 2016, this fast telephoto zoom lens offers a range of focal lengths that follows on directly from the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH., which launched with the SL camera at the end of last year. Together, these two lenses cover focal lengths spanning 24 to 280mm, providing the versatility to shoot a multitude of subjects and situations – from close-ups to travel and sports photography.
 
The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 is characterised by its incredibly high speed and offers outstanding optical and mechanical precision. Its integrated optical image stabilisation (OIS) enables exposure times to be increased by up to 3.5 stops, and guarantees shake-free hand-held photography even at telephoto settings.
 
Furthermore, this exceptional zoom lens features an entirely new design, with dual internal focusing that ensures extremely fast and quiet autofocus, and delivers consistently impressive imaging performance at distances from infinity to its close focusing limit.

As with all Leica lenses, the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 was designed and developed by Leica’s optical specialists in Wetzlar, Germany, combining outstanding optical expertise, cutting-edge technology and premium materials – guaranteeing the consistently high quality that Leica photographers have come to expect. The design of the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 comprises 23 elements (in seven moving groups), seven of which are made from glass with anomalous partial dispersion, ensuring minimal chromatic aberration. The movement of the two focusing elements is provided by newly developed drive technology with linear positioning of the lenses by stepping motors.

Its ergonomic design makes the lens easier to carry by hand and also allows the attachment of a lens belt. A lockable rotating tripod collar ensures the lens can be fixed at any angle, and features detents every 90 degrees for rapid switching from landscape to portrait format.
 
The current Leica SL-System portfolio will be extended later this year with the addition of the Leica Summilux-SL 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. prime lens (available in Q4 2016). Furthermore, the extensive compatibility of the Leica SL-System gives photographers access to the majority of Leica lenses ever produced. For example, all Leica T lenses can be mounted on the Leica SL without an adapter, while the M-Adapter T enables the use of almost all Leica M-Lenses constructed since 1954. In addition, Leica S-Lenses can be mounted with the S-Adapter L (available in May 2016), and the forthcoming R-Adapter (available Q3 2016) will allow Leica R-System lenses to be used with the SL camera.

Canon announces budget-friendly EOS Rebel T6 (1300D)

Canon has announced its latest entry-level DSLR, the Rebel T6, which is known as the EOS 1300D in most regions. The T6 is a relatively minor update to the Rebel T5 (EOS 1200D) and adds a faster Digic 4+ processor, higher resolution LCD, ‘white priority’ WB mode (which produces more neutral color in tungsten lighting), a food scene mode and Wi-Fi with NFC.

The T6 retains the same 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 9-point AF system, Full HD video capture and numerous scene and creative modes as its predecessor.

The Rebel T6 will ship in the US next month at a price of $ 549, which includes the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II lens.

Samsung announces in-house 12MP dual-pixel sensor

Samsung has announced a new smartphone image sensor that offers 12MP resolution, 1.4μm-pixel-size and Dual Pixel technology for fast focusing. Interestingly, those are very similar specifications to that of the Sony IMX260 sensor that has been found to be used in Samsung’s new flagship smartphones S7 and S7 edge. Read more

Sony announces development of wireless flash control system

To kick off WPPI in Las Vegas, Sony has announced that it’s developing a wireless radio flash control system for its range of flashguns. Consisting of the FA-WRC1M radio commander and FA-WRR1 receiver, the system will provide control over 15 flashes in 5 groups up to 30m away. It will offer sync speeds up to 1/250th sec as well as a high sync speed. No pricing has been given, but Sony estimates the system will be available this summer in the US and Canada.

Sony Announces Development of New Wireless Lighting Control System at WPPI 2016

LAS VEGAS, Mar. 7, 2016 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today announced plans to release a new wireless lighting control system to meet the growing demands of professional Sony photographers.  

Designed for compatibility with their ? interchangeable cameras and external flash units, the new lighting system will include the FA-WRC1M wireless radio commander as well as the FA-WRR1 wireless radio receiver.  A prototype of the new system will be on display in Sony’s booth at WPPI 2016.  

With a maximum range of 30m (approx. 98 feet), the new radio controlled system will allow for an extremely flexible wireless flash shooting experience with exceptional performance in all types of shooting conditions. In total, the system can control a maximum of 15 separate flash units in up to 5 groups of flashes.   While using the system, photographers have the ability to control the exposure of connected flash units either manually or automatically depending on preference.   Additionally, the new lighting control system will be capable of flash sync speeds of up to 1/250th of a second with high speed sync (HSS) available as well.  

The new Wireless Lighting Control system will be available this summer at authorized retailers throughout the US and Canadian markets.  Pricing and detailed specifications will be released at a later date.

Nikon announces trio of long-zoom Coolpix cameras, two of which support 4K capture

Nikon has announced a trio of new superzooms, two of which support 4K/UHD video capture. All three have a new naming scheme, with the A-series replacing the ‘L’ cameras and the B-series taking over for the ‘P’ models.

All three cameras offer what Nikon calls SnapBridge, which combines Wi-Fi (with NFC) and Bluetooth. By using a low energy version of Bluetooth, your phone can maintain a constant connection with the camera, meaning that you don’t have to re-pair every time you want to share photos.

The compact Coolpix A900, which offers a 20MP BSI CMOS sensor, 35X (24-840mm equiv.) F3.4-6.9 lens, 3″ tilting LCD and 4K video capture at 30p. It will be available in silver and black at a price of $ 399.

Next is the Coolpix B500, which loses 4K capture but uses four AA batteries for power – a real rarity these days. It sports a 40X (22.5-900mm equiv.) F3.0-6.5 lens, 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, tilting 3″ LCD and 1080/30p video recording. Your color choices for this model are black and red and the estimated selling price is $ 299.

The B700 has the most zoom of the bunch, with a 60X (24-1440mm equiv.) F3.3-6.5 lens, 20MP BSI CMOS sensor, fully articulating, touch-enabled 3″ LCD, a 921k-dot electronic viewfinder and 4K video capture. You can pick one up for $ 499 in black only.

All three models will be available later this spring.

Easily Share and Transfer Images: The New Nikon SnapBridge

With more images being shared than ever before, Nikon has developed the new Nikon SnapBridge to help consumers automatically transfer images via Bluetooth®1 low energy (BLE) directly to a compatible smartphone2 or tablet, establishing an “always on” connection, making it easier than ever to share amazing images with the world. The Nikon SnapBridge app allows users to document the time and location images were taken, embed copyright or photographer information on any image, as well as operate the camera remotely, which is great for capturing group shots. Built-in Wi-Fi3 and NFC are also available to further increase connectivity and promote sharing great images.

Additionally, SnapBridge users can take advantage of Nikon’s free image storing service, Nikon Image Space, to store up to 20 GB of images and an unlimited number of thumbnail images (up to 2MB) to the cloud, while the application will also send registered users firmware updates directly to their smart device.

COOLPIX B700

The COOLPIX B700 is a compact superzoom camera that offers incredible range and outstanding image quality. Whether trying to capture birds in-flight or the star player from the sidelines, images captured will be rendered in amazing quality thanks to the camera’s impressive 20.3-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, even when shooting in low-light. The B700 can capture impressive portraits or landscapes with a phenomenal 60x optical zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens (120x with Dynamic Fine Zoom4) that expands from wide-angle to telephoto zoom for accuracy and precision in every shot. COOLPIX B500

A 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor alongside an impressive 40x optical zoom NIKKOR glass lens (up to 80x with Dynamic Fine Zoom), lets users capture high quality images from near or far. The camera also offers hybrid VR to combat camera shake when shooting on-the-go. To complement still images captured, the B500 can record full 1080p HD video, while framing every shot is made easy using the high resolution tilting 920k-dot 3-inch LCD screen that helps capture images at any angle. Users can easily upload their creations to social media via Nikon SnapBridge using any compatible smartphone or tablet.

COOLPIX A900

Ideal for travel, the COOLPIX A900 is a slim long zoom compact camera that fits comfortably into any user’s pocket. While the A900 may be small, it packs an amazing 35x Optical Zoom NIKKOR glass lens (70x with Dynamic Fine Zoom) that helps reach far away subjects. Supported by a 20-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor that renders amazing quality and detail, users can also capture 4K UHD video at 30p; an impressive feature set for such a lightweight and pocketable compact camera. A 3-inch tilting high resolution 920k-dot LCD display helps frame an image at any angle and easily navigate through numerous creative options at the user’s disposal. Price and Availability

The Nikon COOLPIX B700, COOLPIX B500 and COOLPIX A900 will be available in Spring 2016 with suggested retail prices (SRP*) of $ 499.95, $ 299.95 and $ 399.95, respectively. The B700 will be available in Black, the B500 in Black and Red and the A900 in Silver and Black.

Oppo announces first sensor-based IS for smartphones

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has a history of launching smartphone models with novel camera features and concepts, and has just launched the first sensor-based image stabilization system for smartphones at MWC. Oppo calls it the smallest image stabilizer of its kind, and claims it’s able to correct for shake with greater precision than current optical stabilization systems. Read more
