Olympus announces limited edition OM-D E-M1 Mark II camera to celebrate 100th anniversary

In addition to a barrage of other products launched earlier today, Olympus has also unveiled a limited edition Silver OM-D E-M1 Mark II to commemorate Olympus’ 100th anniversary.

As tends to be the case with many limited edition cameras, nothing changes on the inside. This special edition OM-D E-M1 Mark II still features the same 20.4-megapixel MOS sensor with Olympus’ TruePic VIII image processor to power it all. Also identical to the standard version is the 5-axis image stabilization.

The special edition OM-D E-M1 Mark II will be limited to only 2,000 units worldwide and is set to ship in February 2019 for $ 1.699.99 USD and $ 1,999.99 CAD.

Eyeing post-Brexit landscape, Sony announces Amsterdam office will become new European HQ

According to a report from Nikkei Asian Review, Sony is moving its European headquarters from the United Kingdom (UK) to the Netherlands in an effort to avoid shipping and customs disruptions that are expected as a result of the UK leaving the European Union (EU).

In its report, Nikkei had the following to say regarding the transition:

‘The Japanese technology giant will merge England-based Sony Europe, which manages its European electronics business, into a new subsidiary in Amsterdam. The new entity will begin operations in April, after Brexit at the end of March, while the U.K. arm will continue to manage product imports and sales, with no personnel to be relocated.’

Nikkei notes Europe is a ‘crucial market’ for Sony, with a reported €14.5 / £12.7 / $ 16.5 billion in sales in the 2017 fiscal year — more than 20% of its total revenue.

The BBC also reported on Sony’s transition, saying:

‘In a statement Sony said the move would mean “we can continue our business as usual without disruption once the UK leaves the EU. All our existing European business functions, facilities, departments, sites and location of our people will remain unchanged from today.”’

Both reports note Sony isn’t alone in its transition. Electronics manufacturer and Sony rival Panasonic announced it too was making a move to Amsterdam in October 2018 due to tax issues as a result of the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

DJI announces pricing, availability of Multilink accessory for DJI Inspire 2, Cendence controllers

After first teasing it back in September 2018, DJI has officially announced the pricing and availability of Multilink for its Inspire 2 and Cendence controllers.

The new Multilink accessory connects a single master remote with up to three additional controllers. This setup ‘allows slave networks to form a star network with the master controller as the hub, offering aerial filmmakers more options in camera control and in-flight monitoring,’ according to the press release.

It features dual-band functionality for operating at 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz with the ability for the slave controllers to be up to 150m / 500ft away from the master controller. DJI claims the latency between the master and slave controllers is as low as 2.5ms and 3.7ms for the 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz bands, respectively.

The Multilink accessory for Inspire 2 Cendence controllers is being sold on DJI’s online store for $ 99 a piece with the option to purchase a pack of three for $ 282, a savings of $ 15.

Designed to for use with the Inspire 2 and Cendence remote controllers, DJI Multilink will retail for $ 99 USD and $ 282 USD for a combo that includes 3 Multilinks. The new product will be available starting today on store.dji.com, DJI flagship stores and authorized dealers in the US, Europe, and mainland China.

About the Multilink

The new DJI Multilink connects with the Inspire 2 and Cendence remote controllers to create a master-slave network with up to three additional slave controllers. The slave controllers connected to Multilink form a star network with the master controller as the main device. The slave controllers can wirelessly send commands to the aircraft through the master controller and receive images and video signals from the aircraft directly.

With a dual-band operating frequency of 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz, the slave controllers can maintain a steady connection to the master controller at distances of up to 150m from each other, which allows for efficient filming even in the least ideal environments. The latency between the master controller and the slave controllers is as low as 2.5ms (5.8G) / 3.7ms (2.4G), allowing for a reliable live-feed of the aircraft’s camera to additional monitors.

Nikon quietly announces Coolpix B600, A1000 compact cameras

Nikon has quietly announced the upcoming availability of two new compact cameras, the Coolpix B600 and the Coolpix A1000. The B600 fills a gap between Nikon’s current Coolpix B500 and B700 cameras while the A1000 is a lower-resolution successor to Nikon’s A900.

Nikon Coolpix B600

The Coolpix B600 is a bridge-style camera with a 60x optical zoom lens with an equivalent focal length range between 24-1440mm. The lens features Nikon’s Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) technology — rated for three stops of compensation — and offers a dedicated macro mode.

Full specs for the B600 are yet to be released, but from what’s known so far, the B600 houses a 16-megapixel sensor that’s also capable of shooting 1080p30 video. The B600 also features Nikon’s Active D-Lighting, which is designed to reduce the loss of detail in highlights and shadows of high-contrast scenes.

On the rear of the camera is a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD monitor with an anti-reflective coating. Like its P600 counterpart, the B600 includes target-finding AF and multiple creative modes for both photos and videos.

Nikon Coolpix A1000

The Coolpix A1000, an apparent successor to the A900, is a compact camera with a 35x optical zoom lens with an equivalent focal length range between 24-840mm. Like the B600, it too uses Nikon’s Hybrid VR technology and Active D-Lighting.

Inside the A1000 is a 1/2.3-inch 16-megapxiel backside illuminated CMOS sensor — a drop from the 20-megapixel sensor inside the A900 — with a standard sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400. The A1000 has Raw photo capture in Nikon’s NRW format and is capable of recording 4K30 video.

The A1000 features 1166k-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch tilting 1036k-dot touchscreen LCD display on the rear of the camera. Nikon has also included its SnapBridge technology, meaning the A1000 can be paired via its built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with supported smartphones and tablets to review and transfer photos on the go.

Pricing and availability

The Nikon Coolpix B600 and A1000 are currently available for pre-order at Wex Photo and Video for £329 / €359 and £409 / €449, respectively.

Nikon hasn’t mentioned whether or not the B600 and A1000 will be available in the U.S. market. DPReview has contacted Nikon for details on the exact availability and will update this article accordingly if and when it gets a response.

The camera has an effective pixel count of 16.0 megapixels and supports a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. Its combination of backside illumination CMOS sensor and EXPEED high-performance image-processing engine captures superior still and video quality, even at high sensitivities. The COOLPIX B600 is also equipped with a variety of functions that enable a diverse power of expression, including 19 scene modes, as well as a Creative mode that offers a total of 36 different effects.

The camera also features functions that make it easier to use as a high-power zoom model and ensure increased operability, such as a Snap-back zoom button and Side zoom control, as well as a shooting mode dial that enables immediate switching between frequently used shooting modes. A stylish and compact high-power zoom model with a built-in electronic viewfinder providing superior image quality and operability

Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the COOLPIX A1000, a stylish compact digital camera equipped with an electronic viewfinder that supports 35x optical zoom.

The COOLPIX A1000 boasts a compact size for ease of portability, and comes equipped with a 35x optical zoom lens that covers a range of equivalent focal lengths — from the wide-angle 24 mm*1 to the super-telephoto 840 mm*1 (Dynamic Fine Zoom further expands the zoom ratio to 70x*2). This allows users to easily enjoy super-telephoto photography that delivers images with sharp and clear resolution.

The COOLPIX A1000 supports a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. The camera is also equipped with a lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function for still-image shooting, and hybrid vibration reduction (VR) for movie recording that is effective even when recording 4K UHD movies. The camera’s Active D-Lighting function reduces the loss of details in highlights and shadows in high-contrast situations such as backlit scenes. Not only does viewfinder shooting achieve a steadier shooting stance that helps reduce camera shake – by making only the recordable angle of view visible – it also allows the user to concentrate on the intended subject, aiding the process of composing shots.

    The camera is also equipped with a 3-inch tilting monitor for which a touch panel has been newly adopted. The tilting mechanism makes shooting from high and low angles easier, and the approximately 1036k-dot LCD monitor, which supports a high-definition display and intuitive touch operation, enables smooth camera operations from shooting to image playback. In addition, the monitor uses an anti-reflection coating that makes viewing under strong lighting easier, ensuring better visibility even when outdoors in harsh lighting.

    The COOLPIX A1000 is also equipped with a Snap-back zoom button that temporarily shifts zoom position to the wide-angle side to some degree for easy framing when shooting fast-moving subjects or during super-telephoto shooting. Side zoom control that enables smooth zooming even while recording movies has also been added on the side of the lens. Other functions, including aperture, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation, or white balance setting can also be assigned to the Side zoom control.

Fujifilm announces 100-200mm F5.6 lens for GFX system

Fujifilm has announced its new GF 100-200mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR tele-zoom lens, for medium format. When attached to a GFX body, the lens covers an equivalent focal length range of 79-158mm (the GF 1.4x teleconverter is supported if you need extra reach). The lens is stabilized, with Fujifilm claiming 5 stops of shake reduction. Optical construction comprises 20 elements in 13 groups, including one aspherical and two super ED elements.

The 100-200 uses a linear motor for ‘silent and high-speed autofocus’ which locks in place when the camera is powered down. The minimum focus distance is 0.6m at wide-angle and 1.6m at telephoto, with a max magnification of 0.2x. The lens is weather-sealed and weighs just over a kilogram (2.3 pounds).

The GF 100-200mm F5.6 will be available in late February for $ 2000.

Sony announces new Imaging Edge mobile app, updates desktop software

Sony has announced the ‘Imaging Edge’ mobile application that replaces the PlayMemories Mobile app. It offers remote control capability and geolocation. Users of recent Sony cameras (RX10 IV, RX100 V(A) and VI, a7 III, a7R III and a9) will be able to transfer 4K video in addition to full-resolution images (by selecting media on-camera). a9 owners will also be able to auto-transfer 2MP images.

Transfer & Tagging add-on

A pro workflow ‘Transfer & Tagging add-on’ will be available for the a9, a7R III and a7 III. This allows metadata tags to be added to images, including voice-input for quick captioning.

In addition, a9 users will be able to use the camera’s background FTP capability to quickly transfer full-res photos automatically to the smartphone or a remote server. Users will be able to do so wirelessly via a Wi-Fi access point or via direct tethering to a mobile phone (if the phone supports it), or via wired USB connection to the mobile device. Both the Imaging Edge app and the Transfer & Tagging add-on will be available this spring.

Later this month, version 1.4 of Sony’s desktop applications will be updated. The Remote, View and Edit apps will support time-lapse movie creation along with improved usability.

New Imaging Edge Mobile Applications

The newly introduced mobile application named Imaging Edge Mobile is the successor to Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile™ app and will offer instant transfer of images from camera to a connected mobile devices while shooting. Images can be transferred when utilizing the new “Auto background transfer to Smartphone” functionality, allowing users to easily share content direct from their phone to social media platforms. The mobile application also supports 4K movie transfer and remote control functionality.

For professional photographers, Sony will be releasing a new mobile application ‘Transfer & Tagging add-on’ that will support instant delivery workflow by allowing users to transfer content to their mobile devices via the camera’s FTP background transfer functionality, without distraction from their shooting. Sony announces a6400 midrange APS-C mirrorless camera

Sony has announced the a6400, an updated 24.2MP mirrorless camera with a flip-up rear touchscreen and the processor and autofocus system ‘borrowed from the a9’.

In many respects the camera resembles an a6300 with a more powerful processor, enhanced autofocus and a more extensively articulated touchscreen, but launched at a slightly lower cost. It also adds the timelapse function that was lost when Sony moved away from offering in-camera apps.

Like previous models it can shoot at up to 11 fps or 8 fps in silent shutter mode, both with full autofocus and exposure capability, but not live view.

Enhanced AF

Most of the enhancements come in the form of autofocus improvements that have been developed for the a9. These include increased speed along with the enhanced ‘real-time tracking’ and animal Eye AF promised in a firmware update for its a9 pro-level sports camera.

Like recent APS-C Sony models it has 425 phase detection points spread out across its sensor. These, combined with the more powerful processor let Sony claim World’s fastest AF (with all the footnotes such claims usually entail). The most obvious differences are that Sony now says its subject recognition and tracking algorithms now include eye and pattern detection, in addition to the distance, color and face detection information they previously worked with. This should lead to more stable, persistent tracking, the company says.

Movie AF tracking is also improved, Sony says. Like the a6300, oversampled 4K video is taken from the full width of the sensor.

The camera also offers an 8-bit version of the Hybrid Log Gamma standard for simple capture of HDR video, allowing the capture and display of a wider range of tones in a natural manner, on the latest TVs. The company only promises compatibility with its own TVs.

The body-only price will be $ 900 in the US, CAN$ 1250 in Canada and €1050 in Europe. This is noticeably less expensive (by $ 100 and €200) than the a6300, which suggests it will sit a little lower in the lineup. Only time will tell whether this will also see it replace the low-cost a6000 model.

Speedy Performance that Captures Decisive Moments

The impressive autofocus system on the new ?6400 inherits many technologies from Sony’s newest line-up of full-frame cameras including the ?9, ?7R III and ?7 III models. The new a6400 features 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points that are placed densely over the entire image area, covering approximately 84% of the image area. This high-speed, high-performance tracking AF system is paired with a new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine that together allow the camera to acquire focus in as little as 0.02 seconds2 and maintain subject lock extremely effectively, ensuring even the fastest moving subjects can be tracked and captured with ease.

The ?6400 introduces advanced “Real-time Eye AF,” the latest version of Sony’s acclaimed Eye AF technology. This exciting new capability employs artificial intelligence based object recognition to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. In all autofocus modes, the camera now automatically detects the eyes of the subject and activates Eye AF with a half press of the shutter button, and when in AF-C or AF-A mode, the preferred eye (left or right) of your subject can be selected as the focus point. Choices include Auto / Right Eye / Left Eye, and a Switch Right / Left Eye function is able to be assigned to a custom function as well. This exciting new technology completely frees the photographer to focus solely on composition with full trust that focus will be tack sharp on the subject’s eye. Eye AF support for animals will be added in summer 2019 via a system software update, ideal for wildlife photographers.

Also debuting on the ?6400 is Sony’s newly developed “Real-time Tracking.” This mode utilizes Sony’s latest algorithm including artificial intelligence (AI) based object recognition and processes color, subject distance (depth), pattern (brightness) as spatial information to ensure that all subjects can be captured with excellent accuracy. Additionally, when photographing or videographing humans or animals, face and eye position information is recognized by AI and the subject’s eye7 is monitored in real time with extremely high tracking precision. This can be activated by a simple half press of the shutter button, or can be assigned to a custom function as well.

In terms of overall shooting speeds, the new camera can shoot at up to 11 fps4 with full AF/AE tracking while utilizing the mechanical shutter, and up to 8 fps5 with full AF/AE tracking while silent shooting. It can shoot at each of these speeds for up to 116 frames JPEG Standard / 46 frames RAW compressed, greatly increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment.

All-around Advancements in Image Quality

Sony’s new ?6400 is equipped with a 24.2 MP3 APS-C sized image sensor with that is paired with an upgraded BIONZ X processor to deliver incredible advancements in image quality and color reproduction in all types of shooting conditions. Standard ISO ranges up to ISO 32000 for both still and movie, and is expandable up to ISO 102400 for still images, with excellent noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities.

The camera also inherits many of the image processing algorithms from Sony’s newest full-frame cameras, greatly suppressing noise while preserving resolution and improving texture depiction.

Advanced High-Resolution 4K6 Movie Recording with Fast Hybrid Autofocus

The versatile ?6400 is an exceptional video camera, offering internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning to collect about 2.4x the amount of data required for 4K movies, and then oversamples it to produce high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. Focusing during movie shooting is fast and stable thanks to upgraded Fast Hybrid AF technology, which keeps the subject in constant smooth focus no matter the scene, and even if an object crosses in front of the camera. This advanced AF plus touch focus functionality make it an ideal camera choice for many vloggers and video creators that are regularly creating and uploading content online.

For time-lapse movie creation, the new camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. AE tracking sensitivity can be adjusted to “High”, “Mid” or “Low” during interval shooting, allowing for reduced changes in exposure over the shooting interval.

Additionally, for the first time in Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, the new model includes an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, which supports an Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR (HLG) compatible TV’s to playback beautiful, true-to-life 4K HDR imagery. Further, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased color grading flexibility, as well as Zebra functionality, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording. The camera can also record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbps, allowing footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow-motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

Upgraded Build to Maximize Versatility

The new camera is designed to offer a high level of functionality and customization to maximize shooting freedom. New on the ?6400 is a fully 180-degree tiltable, 3.0-type LCD flip screen with 921k-dots of resolution that allows for simple and effective framing of selfie-style shooting for both still and video capture. Wacom announces the Cintiq 16HD, a Full HD graphics tablet that displays 16.7 million colors

Wacom has announced its latest creation, the Cintiq 16HD, a mid-range pen tablet that takes inspiration from Wacom’s much larger (and more expensive) Cintiq Pro lineup and packages it in a more compact and affordable form factor.

The Cintiq 16HD falls right between Wacom’s Cintiq 13HD and Cintiq 22HD graphics tablet. Its display, as it name suggests, is a 15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 pixel touchscreen display with the ability to produce upwards of 16.7 million colors — 72% NTSC color coverage and 100% sRGB. The screen has a brightness rating of 210 cd/m², a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 176-degree viewing angle.

The pen tablet features built-in legs that provide a natural tilt angle and a recessed connection so it lays flat when the three-in-one power port is plugged in.

Included with the Cintiq 16HD is the Wacom Pro Pen 2, which works with the tablet to offer 8192 levels of pen pressure sensitivity — four times that of its predecessor, the Cintiq Pro 16. The pen features two side buttons and lag-free tracking. It uses Electro Magnetic Resonance (EMR) technology, meaning no batteries are needed to keep the pen operating.

The Wacom Cintiq 16HD works with both macOS and Windows operating systems and is currently available for pre-order for $ 649.95. In addition to the graphics tablet and Wacom Pro Pen 2, it comes with a detachable pen holder, three replacement nibs, a nib removal tool, a 3-in-1 cable, and the required power cable and adapter.

Wacom offers a limited one-year warranty in Japan, Asia Pacific and China and a two-year limited warranty in the USA, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Venus Optics announces 9mm F2.8 lens with DL mount for DJI cameras, drones

Venus Optics has the Laowa 9mm F2.8 DL Zero-D, the widest lens available for DJI X7 cameras and Inspire 2 drones.

The lens, which is identical in design and specs to the Fuji X, Sony E and Canon EF-M mount versions, features a 113-degree field of view and ‘close-to-zero distortion.’ Venus Optics notes the widest DL lens currently available, the DJI 16mm f/2.8 ASPH ND, has a diagonal field of view of just 80-degrees, meaning X7 and Inspire 2 users are able to get much more in the frame than previously possible, as seen int he comparison video below.

The lens weighs only 210g (0.46 lbs) and measures 60mm (2.36 in) long. It’s constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups with two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements. The front filter thread has a diameter of 49mm and it uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm.

Below is a collection of sample footage captured by Ling Chen and shared by Venus Optics that shows the lens onboard a DJI Inspire 2 drone, as well as a sample gallery of still images shot by Liu Su Pei and shared by Venus Optics.

AirMap announces real-time geofencing alerts on Android, iOS for DJI drones

Airspace management company AirMap announced the release of real-time geofencing alerts in its AirMap for Drones mobile app available for iOS and Android devices.

The new feature alerts pilots visually and/or verbally when their drone is approaching airspace that is unsafe or areas where drone flying is not permitted. AirMap uses data from organizations such as civil aviation authorities, air navigation service providers and local authorities to build its databases and airspace maps.

AirMap says real-time geofencing will soon get the ability to prevent drones from entering unsafe operating area or leaving its flight path, instead of just sending out alerts. Pilots will have to opt in to activate this function.

In addition to implementing real-time geofencing alerts in its own app, AirMap is also making the feature available to other developers and OEMs as a mobile SDK for iOS and Android, allowing them to ‘to build services enhancing flight safety, compliance and overall experience for their users.’

Real-time geofencing alerts are currently only available for users of DJI drones when operating in the AirMap for Drones fly mode. More information can be found on the AirMap website.
