A Collection of Dreamy Star Photography

24 May

Doing night photography is one of my favorite things to do. Photographing the stars is one of the toughest parts of night photography. We’ve had a few articles on night photography and specifically the stars here on dPS. Here are some tips on star photography for you:

  • Do you pack up and leave after sunset and miss the fun of night photography?
  • Nightscapes: Photographing the City at Night
  • How to Photograph the Stars

To give you some ideas of what’s possible with night photography and shooting the stars, here is a collection of star photographs.

Super Rockers: Familiar Heroes Get Edgy Modern Makeovers

24 May

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Rocking League 1

See all of your favorite Marvel and DC superheroes like you’ve never imagined them, covered in tattoos and wearing skin-tight hipster jeans. New York-based illustrator Andrés Moncayo gave Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Wolverine and many more edgy makeovers that are still evocative of their classic looks.

Rocking League 2

Rocking League 3

Superman, for example, is rocking an undercut, neck tattoo and ripped t-shirt. Wonder Woman’s gone a bit rockabilly, while Batman is wearing a hoodie with ears. Thor is clearly the lead singer of a metal band.

Rocking League 4

Rocking League 5

The characters are split up into ‘The Rocking League’ and ‘The Avengers Band.’ Other characters featured include Sue and Johnny Storm, The Flash, The Hulk, Spiderman and Iron Man.

Rocking League 6

Rocking League 7

The artist studied how bands pose in photographs to make each superhero look like they’re too cool for everything. Can you pick out what style of music each one would perform?

What The Duck #4114

24 May

wtdlogo_big.jpg

We’ve come to the end of another week here at dpreview, and as our thoughts drift to weekend shooting opportunities, it’s time to take things a little less seriously. Aaron Johnson’s comic strip ‘What the Duck’ is just the thing, taking a gently satirical look through the lens of a photographically inclined waterfowl. You can find it published here (and in our newsletter) every week; we hope you enjoy it, and your weekend.

BBC examines 100 years of Leica

24 May

Screen_Shot_2014-05-23_at_9.36.30_AM.png

The BBC has posted a video looking at Leica’s history, on the Germany company’s 100-year anniversary. The very first Leica camera was designed in 1914 by engineer Oskar Barnack, who refined the basic design through multiple iterations, leading all the way to today’s digital M-mount rangefinders. In the video, photojournalist and long-time Leica user Tom Stoddart shares his thoughts on the company, and on some of the classic images that have been captured on Leica cameras over the past 100 years.

dPS is 8 Years Old [And Here are Our Most Popular Tutorials Ever]

Last month dPS passed it’s 8th birthday. While we usually have a little celebration at dPS HQ on such milestones we were so busy that week that not a single one of us noticed!

So today I took a few minutes to reflect on the journey since our first post on 17 April 2006 – and what a ride it has been.

When I hit publish on that first post I did so in the hope of helping a few of my family and friends improve their photography by writing down the tips that I found myself regularly telling them about how to use their cameras better.

I had no idea that 8 years later the site would have published over 4500 tutorials, 19 photography eBooks, have a staff of writers, editors, designers, developers, producers, customer support and marketers running it and would have been visited by over 275 million people!

Thanks so much to our wonderful community for sticking with us for another year here at dPS and a huge thanks to the dPS team for all your hard work!

This past year we’ve seen a complete overhaul of our design and the addition to our team on numerous fronts. We hope you continue to enjoy what we do and are excited about the year ahead – we have some special stuff planned!

While we’re in a mood to reminisce I thought I’d take a look back at the most tutorials we’ve published and I’ve compiled a list of our most popular 15 tutorials for those of you who might have joined us recently (or for those who want to look back).

Many of these are from the early days but are still very relevant for today. Each tutorial has been read by over 1,000,000 readers (and up to 4,000,000).

Small world: NASA and Gigapan release ‘Global Selfie’ panorama

nasa_gigapan_1.jpg

In a unique spin on the typical Gigapan panorama we’ve come to know and love, the company teamed up with NASA on Earth Day this year for something big – an image comprised of self-portraits captured by citizens all over the world. When zoomed out, it resembles an image of Earth from space. The final product has been released, with submissions coming in from every continent. Take a look

Update: Olympus issues emergency firmware fix for E-P5

24 May

shared:download-button.png

Update: Following on the release of a significant new v1.4 firmware update for the Pen E-P5 last week, Olympus has issued another fix. Version 1.5 reportedly addresses a problem introduced by 1.4 in which displayed values for shooting parameters did not change. Firmware v1.4 introduced improved Wi-Fi remote control functionality to the E-P5 and a ‘0 sec’ anti-shock setting. The latter was added to help prevent blurred images at certain shutter speeds – our main gripe when we reviewed the camera.

Licht und Zeit

23 May

Photographing UV Paints With Linh Le

23 May

Hong Linh Photography Tribal Shoot With UV Paints - Fashion Photography Blog (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

When Linh Le from Hong Linh Photography told me that she was going to be shooting an Ethiopian inspired shoot with UV Paints, I thought what an unusual concept yet I couldn’t help wondering how it would turn out. Then she showed me the photos that she shot that weekend and I was drawn in by the beauty images that she achieved. I knew I had to speak to her about the images she created and hope that it would be able to inspire the fellow artists that follow this blog, to let imagination take over and to think outside the box.

Linh Le has remembered constantly taking photos, she explained that “I have always loved taking pictures, especially when on holidays, but they were more tourist pictures lol. Then in 2010, I went on a big Asia trip. It was my first time in Asia, (even though I’m Asian haha), and I wanted to capture the breathtaking landscape as well as the culture there in a deeper way than just with standard tourist pictures. This is when I bought my first DSLR camera. So, I started off with a lot of travel and landscape photography and when I moved to Cardiff, I decided to join Cardiff Camera Club to learn more about photography. The club offered a lot of practical opportunities, such as different projects and one of them was ‘people photography’. I have always loved fashion and beauty make-up, so I decided to do a beauty series with the theme colours. Luckily, I had a friend who was really into doing make-up (Sophie) and a friend who was a former model in Mongolia (Khaliun) and so, I set up my first studio shoot. From that moment on, I knew that this is what I wanted to do and I started learning more about fashion/beauty lighting as well as posing and I used all my friends as models to practice shooting as often as I could. Photography has become my passion and a very big part of my life. It is a way for me to express myself as well as to bring in different creative aspects of myself, for example, I love to play with fabrics and create my own outfits and accessories for photo shoots. I couldn’t imagine my life without fashion photography.”

Hong Linh Photography Tribal Shoot With UV Paints - Fashion Photography Blog (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

I asked Linh about why she chose to start experimenting with UV paints for this beauty shoot, she replied “I love experimenting and trying out new things and shooting with UV paints was an opportunity for me to bring my creativity to a whole new level. In addition to that, UV paints are an exciting way to focus more on Make-Up art as well as lighting.” I was intrigued and asked Linh if she could elaborate on the inspiration for the shoot, “My inspirations always come out of nowhere at random times, but mostly before I go to sleep lol. I was thinking about doing a tribal inspired shoot for awhile and I was browsing through Pinterest when I came across some UV make-up shots and I thought it would look amazing with the tribal make-up. However, I didn’t want the UV paint to stand out so much that you don’t see any other details of her [the model’s] face any more, so it was then a long process of trying out the balance between the UV light and the ambient light.”

If Linh could summarize her style, she states, “I would describe my style is elegant, yet soft and dreamy. I try to tell a story with my image, visualising the kind of life that person might lead or the emotions they have in that situation. My concepts are often inspired by different cultures or social issues that I have experienced or encountered in my life. Therefore, the images are mostly a reflection of myself in some way.” To create this beauty shoot Linh detailed that, “I used my Nikon D7000 on a tripod. For the lighting, I used led fairy lights hanging on the backdrop and a 20W UV light tube on each side of the model.”
