Weekly Challenge – Portrait of a Man

08 Feb

Earlier today I shared an image collection of The Essence of Masculinity – Portraits of Men. Now, of course, it’s your turn!

First – go look at the image collection if you haven’t already done so. I tried to choose portraits that jumped out at me on Flickr for one reason or another. Usually it was lighting or an expression that caught my eye.

But there two  things that I think all of these images have in common is connection to the subject, and storytelling. There is a story in each one of these images and men. What stories do you see? What stories do you tell with your images?

So your challenge this week is to make a portrait of a man, perhaps someone you know, or maybe a complete stranger on the street. But dig a little deeper than just taking a photo of their face. Make a portrait of their essence.

The say the eyes are the windows to the soul. What better way to truly capture a person’s soul than through the eyes. Expression does not come from the mouth – it starts in the eyes. Go back again and look at the eyes of the men in those portraits, without looking at their mouths. Can you still see the expression? Can you feel them more deeply?

Here’s a few more portraits to get you inspired:

Sorry I thought this image was too funny, I couldn’t resist! Notice, humour is good too!

When you’ve created your stunning portraits please share!

Once you’ve taken your “portrait of a man” we’d love to see them in comments below. Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

Instant Monster Truck: Converting Cars into Snowmobiles

08 Feb

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

Convert Truck Snowmobile 1

Anyone who has driven in heavy snow has witnessed an overconfident driver in a 4×4 go whizzing down the icy street only to fishtail or veer off into a ditch. Four wheel drive may not turn vehicles into magical snow beasts that can handle the worst of winter conditions, but these will: the Track N Go system, a series of treads that installs in just fifteen minutes to basically turn an ordinary vehicle into a monster truck.

Convert Truck Snowmobile 2

While monster trucks may seem ridiculous when seen on the streets in summertime, watching them tackle four-foot snow banks without a hitch might give some of us a twinge of envy when we’re sliding along at ten miles an hour after the latest blizzard. The Track N Go system is a series of four treads that lock onto a vehicle’s wheels to provide traction that tires can’t match.

Convert Truck Snowmobile 3

There’s a catch: you can’t exactly install these things on your Toyota Camry. They’re for 4x4s only, and they’ll set you back $ 25,000. But being that smug driver going where other vehicles can’t, and actually knowing that your car can handle it, might just be priceless.

Convert Truck Snowmobile 5

Of course, there have already been some Southerners perking up asking, do they work in mud? The answer is ‘maybe’ – they were developed specifically for snow, and mud trials haven’t started yet.

The Essence of Masculinity – Portraits of Men

07 Feb

We are at the end of our two week Portrait Deep Dive and I thought I’d end it with one more portrait collection for you. Last week we had Inspiring Portraits of Women, this week it’s the mens’ turn!

The Essence of Masculinity – Portraits of Men

First I want to share with you some portraits of men, by a man – Zuhair Ahmad. I found Zuhair’s work on Flickr last week and liked it so much I asked him to write an article for dPS and he’s agreed – watch for it soon! Here are a few of Zuhair’s portraits of men to start you off:

Tell me it’s not just me and that there’s something special in his images?! The eyes of each of these men speak to me! Do they speak to you? What do they say to you? I see great sadness and wisdom in all of them.

More from Zuhair later – let’s see more portraits of men! Look at each of them one by one. Give each image its due time. What do you see here that is consistent among all of them?  What is different or special about each?

Einfachheit, Banalität und sanfte Melancholie

07 Feb

The desire to start running, Andorf, Oktober 2010

Alle Fotos gibt es hier zu sehen: „Lord, the air smells good today“.

GH4_H_FS14140_slant.png

Panasonic has announced its latest flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix DMC-GH4. It’s designed as a ‘hybrid camera’ that can shoot both stills and videos, and the emphasis of the improvements is clearly on the latter. Its revised 16MP Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine IX processor allow for 4K video, 12 fps continuous shooting and 1080p shooting at bitrates as high as 200Mbps. An optional ‘interface unit’ adds five SDI and two XLR terminals, and permits 10-bit 4:2:2 output with time code.
