Man sagt: „Der Hochzeitstag ist der schönste Tag im Leben!“ Das möchten wir auch gar nicht bestreiten – nur: Mittlerweile spricht man über das Hochzeitsgeschäft, in den Städten haben sich Hochzeitsmeilen gebildet, auf denen man alles von A bis Z für die Hochzeit kaufen kann, sei es das Hochzeitskleid oder eine bestimmte Dienstleistung.
Wir beschäftigen uns mit der Hochzeitsfotografie und müssen sagen, es macht uns einerseits Spaß und wir machen unseren Job total gern, aber es ist eben auch ein Job und zwar kein leichter.
Es hat schon in der Universität, Fachbereich Fotografie, angefangen, dass wir uns zusammen entschlossen haben, Hochzeiten zu fotografieren. Diese Idee fanden unsere Kommilitonen aber gar nicht gut und einige haben uns von der Künstlerliste gestrichen.
„Aber warum denn nicht?“, dachten wir. Warum können wir nicht Hochzeitsfotografie unter einem künstlerischen Aspekt anbieten? Wir waren von der Idee so überzeugt, dass wir, ohne auf unsere Kommilitonen zu hören, einfach weitergemacht haben.
Es ist uns gelungen, glauben wir, die Kunst mit dem Handwerk zu verbinden und mittlerweile haben wir auch Leute gefunden, die das zu schätzen wissen, was uns sehr freut. Warum Handwerk?
Es hat sich im Prozess viel geändert: Heutzutage sind keine Entwicklungsarbeiten in der Dunkelkammer mehr nötig, sondern etwas Ähnliches, dafür aber am Rechner. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es leichter geworden ist, weil man eben am Rechner einfach mehr Möglichkeiten hat.
Auch die Anzahl der Aufnahmen an einem Hochzeitstag hat sich verändert oder besser gesagt vervielfacht.
Jeder von uns bringt von einer Hochzeit in etwa 3000 Fotos mit nach Hause. Ein sehr wichtiger Teil der Arbeit ist die Selektion, denn hier kann man die Bilder auswählen, die etwas erzählen oder eine kräftige, lustige, peinliche oder ernste Aussage haben.
Wir sind der Meinung, dass sich schon hier ein bestimmter Stil eines Fotografen oder eines Teams herauskristallisiert.
Wir investieren im Schnitt 40 bis 50 Stunden in die Auswahl und Bildbearbeitung. Man kann also ruhig über eine Vollbeschäftigung reden, wenn man über die Hochzeitsfotografie spricht. Es ist nichts für die, die schnell Geld verdienen wollen. Es sind ständig Investitionen nötig.
Einerseits rein Finanzielle, denn jeder von uns braucht zwei bis drei Anzüge pro Saison, andererseits ist es sehr viel Zeit, die man investiert, denn es ist ganz wichtig, zu sehen und zu verstehen, in welche Richtung der Hochzeitstrend geht und was andere Fotografen machen.
Der Job ist aber nicht nur Arbeit, sondern gibt auch sehr viel: Es macht uns als Fotografen sehr stark und froh, wenn wir positives Feedback bekommen.
Außerdem erfährt man innerhalb kürzester Zeit, im Schnitt vielleicht zehn Stunden, so viel über das Paar, man gewinnt Freunde und man geht eine besondere Beziehung miteinander ein. Es ist ein sehr schönes Gefühl!
Letztens sagte mir ein Bräutigam: „Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass man an diesem Tag mehr Zeit mit dem Fotografen als mit den Trauzeugen verbringt.“ Wir werden unsere „Kunst“ weitermachen, so lange wir können und dürfen.
Es ist doch der schönste Tag im Leben und es ist toll, dass wir solche Tage im Leben von Anderen miterleben dürfen.
Die Torte wird aufgegessen, der DJ wird am nächsten Morgen nach Hause fahren. Den Tag kann man nicht zurückholen; alles was bleibt, sind die Erinnerungen – die Fotos.

Sono is a remarkable working prototype, created and tested by industrial designer Rudolf Stefanich that “turns your window into an advanced noise cancelling system that allows you to eliminate and/or control the sounds that pass through.”
Cancellation of background noise is just the first step, however, with specific-sound filtering and replacement via a user-friendly touch interface as advanced options.
The gagdet will allow to you dial up or turn down the sounds of car sirens, traffic horns and other intrusive distractions, but it will also give you the power to select a preferred ambient audio experience instead. It effectively offers an adjustable soundtrack of your own choosing.
From its creator: “In our loud and busy world a moment of silence has become a scarce and almost luxurious experience. The pebble like device you can see here lets you reclaim that silence for your home. With its concentric broadband antenna rings, it harvests the energy of electromagnetic noise from Wi-Fi, and similar signals and this way also reduces the level of e-smog pollution in your environment.”
Was ‘The Bloop’ made by a mythical sea monster – and did aliens try to send us a message? It’s hard to say if these 8 unidentified sounds are signals or noise.

Neuerscheinungen und Tipps vom Foto-Büchermarkt
• Zur Ausstellung in der Michael Horbach Stiftung in Köln gibt es nun auch ein Buch: „Revolution in Kuba: Fotografien 1953-1968“*. Es zeigt Bilder aus der Skrein Photo Collection zur kubanischen Revolution, darunter Ikonen der Fotogeschichte von Alberto Korda und René Burri, aber auch unbekannte Bilder, die das Leben im Kuba der 1950er bis 1970er Jahre beleuchten.
• Der Fotograf Mathias Bothor reist viel und gern. Der Bildband „Woanders“* ist sein fotografisches Reisetagebuch mit persönlichen, individuellen Bildern von 17 Orten. Auf Zeit Online gibt es einen kleinen Einblick ins Buch.

In line with this week’s photography challenge, weather, I want to do a quick survey to see if you shoot in the rain or not.
I get a lot of questions from my students about shooting in the rain (or snow, or on the beach) and whether or not it will damage their camera. Of course that depends on the camera body you own (some are weather sealed, some are not – if you aren’t sure read your manual or check the manufacturer’s website), and the precautions you take.
Personally, I do get out in the rain and shoot. In fact this was done in the pouring rain in Melbourne (dPS headquarters) at the casino. I ducked under an overhang, covered up my camera and myself, and got puzzled looks from the passers by.
So, my question for you is – do you brave it? Or do you play it safe?

I’ve watched a few of this guy’s videos and I have to say they’re quite funny. If you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?
This video is by DigitalRev TV, hosted by, as he puts it in his YouTube profile, “an asian dude with British accent”. He covers 10 tongue in cheek signs that you might be a photo geek if . . .
So, are you? I’m pretty sure I am but I’m usually the last one to bring a big camera to social events, or any camera at all. So maybe I’m a recovering one? There is hope!

Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, marks the unofficial start of the annual Christmas shopping season in a big, bad, bargain-hunting way!

Black Friday may be a very modern socioeconomic phenomenon but it has a long and convoluted history dating back to September 24th, 1869 when plunging gold prices triggered a stock market panic… hold on, that may not be the Black Friday we’re discussing here.

Fast forward to 1966 when the Philadelphia Police Department, dreading the approach of yet another chaotic post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy, dubbed the infamous event Black Friday. Within a decade the term was being applied to similar shop-a-paloozas busting out all over the USA, Canada, the UK and more!

By 1980, retailers began to use Black Friday as a convenient term for the point where red ink turned to black: losses to profits, in other words. It took a while for both sides of the economic equation to get in sync over Black Friday, however, but when they did some good things happened. In 2003, Black Friday officially grabbed top billing as the Busiest Shopping Day of the year and although it slipped to second place in 2004, Black Friday’s been King of the Hill ever since. Unlike the more recent emergence of Cyber Monday, Black Friday makes itself apparent by the appearance and behavior of the people doing the actual shopping. Up close and personal, take no prisoners, in your face shopping the likes of which the world has never witnessed! Thanks to teh intarwebs, we all can witness these aspects vicariously beginning with the long (in length and in time) lineups snaking down the streets outside various big box stores.

Stoked by advertising on television, in newspaper flyers, on the radio and online, shoppers eager not to let those juicy bargains slip through their fingers stake out prime spots outside their targeted stores (possibly including Target).

Whether in rows of tents or standing in single file, Black Friday shoppers are a remarkably orderly bunch for the most part. All that changes once the doors open, however, then it’s every man, woman, child and cat for themselves.

Stampedes not seen since the great cattle drives of the 19th century or the great Hindu festivals of the 20th burst into fluid motion as each store’s official Black Friday opening hours strike, and if you were lucky enough to be among the first in line outside you’d better not be unlucky enough to trip and fall once the human avalanche gathers steam and begins its unstoppable roll. In such situations people easily lose their heads, not to mention their wigs.

Shoppers aren’t alone in looking danger in the eyes once the doors swing open – store staff attempting to ensure safety for all by directing the flow often find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The most well-known and certainly most tragic such incident took place at a Valley Stream, NY WalMart store on November 28th of 2008 just after 5:00AM.

As the store doors opened, hundreds of cold, impatient and uncaring shoppers busted the entrance door right off its hinges in their desperate search for bargains. One 34-year old Wal-Mart employee was unable to avoid the furious flood of shoppers and was trampled to death.

This week I want to give you a little push to get out of your comfort zone. Turn of the television and get outside and shoot – no matter what the weather. As a matter a fact, in spite of the weather is even better!
Many photographers pack up their gear and head home at the slightest sight of inclement weather. But some of the very best and most dramatic images are to be had if you are willing to brave the elements. Just make sure you are prepared and stay safe. Take the follow precautions:
Having said that, I hope these images inspire you to do what most others do not as this will almost certainly take your photography up a notch. Being willing to do what’s hard or unpopular is the key to standing apart and making some “wow” images to amaze your friends.
