Photo project documents rivers of the interior U.S.

11 Sep

RICH0006.jpg

Jeff Rich’s photo project started at the French Broad river outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Since then, ‘Watershed Project’ has taken him to the Tennessee River and now the Mississippi in an effort to document and raise awareness of the safekeeping of these rivers. To create some boundaries for the project, he’s limited the scope to capturing the stewardship, pollution and control of the rivers. Click through and check out some of his images.

Fujifilm X-M1 real-world samples gallery

news_mini_1.jpg

The X-M1 may be the cheapest model in Fujifilm’s X-mount lineup, yet it retains the same 16 megapixel X-Trans CMOS sensor as its more expensive siblings. We were impressed with the image quality from the X-Pro1 and X-E1, and if you want to see if the X-M1 fared just as well, click below to head to our 37-shot real world photo gallery.

In die Baumkronen starrend

11 Sep

Franz Kafka schrieb einst:

Baum Wald Luft Holz Weite Photoshop Dichte Surreal

Starry Light: Hand-Crafted Shell Lamps Cast Stellar Patterns

lamp ball of light

Innocuous spheres by day, the carefully handmade holes dotting these coconut shells are hard to even see until they light up at night, morphing from muted balls to bright orbs.

Once illuminated, these subtle spheres are themselves beautifully lit up from within, but also project amazing patterns on surrounding walls, furniture and furnishings, whether set on the floor or placed on a bookcase or nightstand.

Creator Vainius Kubilius explains their constituent parts in anatomical terms – bones (of metal wire) to create a strong and flexible stand, wrapped with skin (of various ropes) to create a tactile exterior, with a head and brain (custom drilled coconut) unique in each case and giving personality to the whole.

11 September, 2013 – Grading CinemaDNG in Lightroom, Camera Raw and Capture One

11 Sep

It hasn’t happened yet in still photography, but there is a growing movement to adopt a standardized raw format for video. It’s called CinemaDNG.

In my newest tutorial I show how these files can be processed in your favourite raw processing program; Lightroom, Camera Raw or Capture One. But – slowly.

Better alternatives are DaVinci Resolve (free up to 1920X1080), or better yet, the just announced update to Adobe’s Premier Pro CC, which will handle CinemaDNG files natively without the need for rendering or transcoding – coming October, 15.

Find out more about this is Grading CinemaDNG in Lightroom, Camera Raw and Capture One.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

What Apple’s new iPhones mean for photographers

11 Sep

video_hero.jpg

As expected, Apple revealed two new iPhones today: the high-end 5S, and a more inexpensive and colorful model, the 5C. However, though there are minor tweaks to the lens and sensor, both models are touting a fairly underwhelming spec of 8 megapixels, especially when compared to Nokia’s 41MP Lumia 1020 or Sony’s latest 20.7MP Xperia Z1. Are Apple’s newest offerings enough to keep photography enthusiasts interested? We take a look on connect.dpreview.com.

Suburb-Terranean: 70s Bunker Home Simulates Day & Night

10 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

underground bunker home

It is a dream home like any other of its era, with brick walls, sliding doors, stock windows and shingle roofs as well as a lawn, garden, trees and pool. The difference? It is set two stories underground in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the faux flora never wilts nor does it grow, and it is for sale.

underground home day night

If this real-life 1970s home seems like something out of a science-fiction movie, you may be remembering the film Blast from the Past, in which the protagonist spends decades underground in vintage fallout shelter styled after a mid-century suburban home and garden.

underground house kitchen pool

Listed at 1.7 million dollars, this foreclosed property looks conventional at street level, but hides a stunning set of secret spaces below, including two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and every other space you would expect inside and outside of a single-family house on the surface.
