Nikon issues service advisory on D600’s dust issue

23 Feb

nikon_d600_1.png

Nikon has released a service advisory for its D600 digital SLR. Based on user complaints, it addresses the widely-reported issue of dust and dirt accumulation on the camera’s sensor. In the advisory, Nikon has belatedly acknowledged that at the point where dust becomes visible in images from the D600, ‘removal may be difficult using normal measures’ and advises customers who have exhausted conventional cleaning options to ‘consult your nearest Nikon service center’, whose technicians will ‘examine the camera thoroughly, and service it as needed.’ Click through for more details, and links to the service advisory.

23 February, 2013 – From Passion to Vision

22 Feb

Our regular contributor and essayist, Alain Briot begins a new series today titled Vision.

Sean Reid has just published an in-depth analysis of image quality from the new Leica M (240). Reid Reviews is a subscription site, but no one else on the web or in print delves as deeply into the subjective aspects of image quality as Sean.

My own review of the new M Leica will have to wait till I return from Mexico. Getting a prototype through the Byzantine world of Mexican Customs was too much to bother with. It also now appears that release of the new M has been delayed until at least late April. My own hands-on review will be completed by then and will appear at around that time.

Nikon and Microsoft sign an Android-based camera patent deal

22 Feb

shared:MSFT_logo.png

Nikon has signed a licensing deal with Microsoft to cover the use of patented technologies in its Android-based cameras. The deal is the latest instance of Microsoft pursuing makers of Android devices, claiming patent infringement. Despite free access being one of the founding ideas of Google’s Android operating system, Microsoft has been increasingly successful in convincing manufacturers of Android devices that they need to strike licensing deals for some of its technologies.

Someone’s Listening: Pre-Drilled, Strapped Compact Light Stands

22 Feb

Many photographers who use a compact stand as the basis for an on-the-go lighting kit like to drill and strap their stands. This is something I have done since back before the early Lighting 101 days. I keep two strapped stands, as more than that on a job and you would probably case them anyway.

LumoPro, who makes the sturdy-but-compact LP605 compact stand, now also offers a pre-drilled and strapped variant. The LP605s will set you back an extra $ 5.

Q&A: Will My Old Flash Fry My New Remotes?

22 Feb

Reader Samora Chapman asks:

I'm new to all this and I dug up my dad's Vivitar 285HV. I just got some Phottix radio triggers. Is it okay to connect them to the old Vivitar? Im scared of frying them!

Ah, the trusty old Vivitar 285. The older ones are great flashes, but with one potentially fatal flaw. You don't want to go sticking that flash on just any camera or remote… Read more »

We’ve updated our Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review with an additional page of lens data, brought to you in collaboration with DxOMark. The RX1’s headline feature may well be its 24MP full frame image sensor, but the fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens is an equally crucial part of its imaging chain. We’ve added a full set of technical lens measurements to our review to illustrate how it performs, presented in our unique data widget. You can also see how it measures up against the best 35mm lenses available for SLRs.

Europäischer Naturfotograf des Jahres 2012

22 Feb

Lullaby Factory: Fanciful Installation for Children’s Hospital

22 Feb

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Lullaby Factory 1

Children at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital can enter a secret courtyard, stand beside a convoluted system of copper pipes and horns, and listen to the sound of soft lullabies. This musical art installation was created by Studio Weave to fill a narrow, otherwise unusable space created by the construction of an adjacent building.

Lullaby Factory 2

Inspired by the pipes and drainage systems that already cover the brick facade of the historic hospital building, Lullaby Factory creates visual interest, pays tribute to the 19th century origins of the structure and provides a comforting function for young patients.

Lullaby Factory 3

The installation reaches 10 stories high and is made of metal pipes in shades of silver, gold, copper and bronze; some of the components were recovered from a decommissioned hospital boilerhouse. Patients who can’t make their way outside into this magical little world between buildings can listen via radio from their rooms.

LUllaby Factory 5

The installation will remain in place until the demolition of the aging building, scheduled for 2028. Say the designers, “Our aim for this project was to re-imagine the Southwood façade as the best version of itself, accepting and celebrating its qualities and oddities; and rather than hiding what is difficult, creating something unique and site specific.”
