Venus Optics adds Canon RF, Nikon Z mount options to three of its most popular lenses

Venus Optics has announced it’s adding Canon RF and Nikon Z variants to three of its existing Laowa lenses.

The Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D, 25mm F2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro and 100mm F2.8 2X Ultra Macro have all been altered so they can now work on Canon and Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless systems. Aside from the mount alterations, the lenses remain unchanged from their counterparts.

Google Photos starts rolling out manual face tagging feature on mobile

As promised this past summer by Google Product Lead David Lieb, Google Photos has been updated to support manual face tagging. The feature first started rolling out to some users last week, according to Android Police, only days after XDA spotted signs of the new feature in an app teardown. The feature still has not arrived for all users, however.

Manual face tagging is a new Google Photos feature that builds upon the service’s existing face-detection algorithm. With this new tool, users are able to manually correct errors made by the algorithm and to also immediately tag images of new people who haven’t yet been identified by the app.

Users who have access to the feature note one big limitation with the new tool: the app does not allow users to tag faces that weren’t detected by the algorithm. As well, it isn’t yet clear whether manually tagging people and correcting mistakes will help improve the algorithm’s ability to detect those people in subsequent photos.

Users who have access to the new manual face tagging option can find the tool within the Google Photos app’s ‘Albums’ menu. Tap on ‘People & Pets,’ then tap on an image. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the menu containing EXIF data, then swipe up again.

The person featured in the image will be listed under a section title ‘People.’ If you have access to the manual face tagging feature, you will see a new pen icon located next to the person within this ‘People’ section. Android Police notes that this feature is rolling out through a server-side update, meaning that users can’t manually update the app to get access to the new tagging option.

ZY Optics announces its Mitakon Creator 85mm F2.8 1-5X ‘Super Macro’ lens

Zhong Yi (ZY) Optics has announced the release of its new Mitakon Creator 85mm F2.8 1-5X Super Macro lens.

The ‘Super Macro’ lens is constructed of 12 elements in 8 groups, has an aperture range of F2.8-F32 and features a minimum focusing distance of 27.2cm (1X) at its 25mm focal length and 10cm (5X) at its 85mm focal length. ZY Optics says the lens was designed ‘to have one of the longest working distance for any super macro lens.’

The lens is entirely manual, features a 58mm front filter thread, uses an eight-blade aperture diaphragm, measures 67mm x 122mm (2.64in x 4.8in) and weighs 750g (1.65lbs). Below are a number of sample images provided by ZY Optics (be forewarned that there are plenty of bugs in the event you don’t like creepy-crawlies):

Shenyang China, Nov 25, 2019 – Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) have released a new Super Macro Lens for full frame cameras, the Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x Super Macro Lens and it features a wide magnification range and a very long working distance.

Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens has a wide magnification range (from 1X to 5X) allowing photographers to capture subjects at different sizes. Users no longer need to DIY or use any extension tubes to reach high magnification shooting.

The lens is also designed to have one of the longest working distance for ANY super macro lens. The closest working distance at 5x magnification is 3.93” (10cm) and 10.7” (27.2cm) at 1x magnification. This working distance is so much longer than traditional macro lenses in the market. Photographers can now start shooting macro objects without getting too close and scare them away.

The extended working distance also implies lighting can get to the subjects easier. It is also more friendly to use on video shooting. This new super macro lens also has a near telecentric performance which is a big advantage when it comes to macro image stacking photography or industrial usage.

The new 1x-5x Super Macro lens incorporates a 12 elements in 8 groups structure which delivers impressive resolution from corners to corners. The chromatic aberration is also controlled to the minimum (APO design). Weighing merely 1.65 lbs (750g) and 6.7cm long, it is a perfect companion for both wildlife or indoor lab shooting. It is relatively compact in its class which allows photographers to capture extremely fine subjects or patterns with different sizes.

Greater magnification can also be achieved by stacking extension tubes or bellows. The high magnification is extremely useful for scientific purposes. The lens can only be used in macro distances and cannot focus to infinity. A 58mm filter thread is also available.

Sony Is Now Beating Nikon in Camera Sales. What Does This Mean for the Industry?

According to Nikkei, Nikon has now dropped behind Sony on overall camera sales, leaving the market with these adjusted rankings:

Canon, #1.

Sony, #2.

And Nikon, #3.

This hardly comes as a surprise, given recent market trends in digital camera sales, along with Nikon’s recently forecasted loss in imaging products (instead of an originally predicted profit).

The truth is that digital camera sales are bleeding across the board, not just for Nikon. In recent years, sales have dropped for Canon, Nikon, and Sony, but Nikon’s poor performance has allowed Sony to creep past them in the rankings.

Note that Sony was already leading the industry in full-frame camera market share, and was also leading Nikon in interchangeable lens camera sales.

In other words: Sony’s success is simply another step on the road to its digital camera dominance.

For Nikon shooters, this is far from good news. As of right now, Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless lineup is in its early stages, with only two cameras and a handful of lenses. But if Nikon decides that its imaging business is costing too much money, the leadership may decide to head into the safer waters of its precision equipment business (where Nikon is performing well and profits are steadier).

If this happens, we could see a decline in both the number and quality of Nikon products.

And then, assuming that digital camera sales continue in the downward direction, and assuming that Canon and Sony continue to push for market dominance, we might see the end of Nikon’s imaging business, period.

Is speculating about the end of Nikon cameras a bit alarmist?

Maybe.

But reports regarding camera sales have been nothing but alarming in recent years, defying expectations and suggesting that things are changing faster than anyone could have predicted. And with recent speculation about Olympus’s camera business shutting down, well, it’s hard not to wonder.

Despite all of the doom and gloom about contraction in the digital photography industry as a whole, 2019 saw plenty of new cameras released, some of which were very important – and seriously impressive. These include Fujifilm’s 100MP GFX 100, Sony’s new flagship a7R IV, and Canon’s affordable full-frame EOS RP, among others.

Canon

Canon had a busy year, releasing products across its entire lineup from large-sensor PowerShot compacts to the full-frame EOS RP. Did any of them make it into your gear bag, or shopping list for the holiday season?

Leica

Leica gets a lot of criticism for making products which most photographers will never be able to afford, but in recent years the company has somewhat changed direction. We really like the Q2 and SL2, but do either of them deserve to be ranked among the best cameras of 2019? Let us know by casting your vote.

Nikon

The only mirrorless camera released by Nikon this year was the Z50. Resembling a downsized Z6 (which is not at all a bad thing, given how nice that camera is to use) the Z50 is Nikon’s first APS-C format mirrorless, and one of the most attractive and ergonomically refined cameras in its class. But that’s just our opinion – what’s yours?

Olympus

Olympus’s camera releases this year spanned the breadth of its lineup, from the TG-6 weather-sealed compact up to the OM-D E-M1X – the company’s first truly ‘professional’ Micro Four Thirds mirrorless model. Meanwhile the very compact, highly-specc’d OM-D E-M5 III is a camera solidly in the traditional OM-D mold, offering plenty of features in a very portable body.

Panasonic

Ricoh

Sony

Sony hasn’t taken its foot off the gas much in recent years, and 2019 saw several major camera launches. The a6100 and a6600 update the company’s APS-C lineup, while the a7R IV is a full-frame high-technology flagship worthy of the term. Meanwhile the Cyber-shot RX100 VII updates the already highly capable RX100 VI with improved autofocus.

How to Light and Photograph Smoke and Steam in a Home Studio Setting

Every subject has different properties according to shape, color, and material that determine the way you light it. With smoke, you want to keep a dark background and a grazing light. Here are a few things to consider when you light and photograph smoke in a home studio setting.

How to Photograph Smoke in a Studio Setting

Have you ever tried to photograph smoke or steam? Perhaps you’re doing a portrait of a smoker or a steaming cup of coffee. Odds are that sooner or later you may face this challenge. Fortunately, the lighting technique is not as elusive as the subject.

Safety first

Before you start to photograph smoke, keep safety in mind – even if it is just smoke. If using a cigarette, always place the cigarette on an ashtray, or place incense on a burner, etc. Remember, you are working with ignited materials – you can never be too careful to avoid burning yourself or starting a fire. Also, it’s always good to have a fire extinguisher handy.

Backdrop

To photograph smoke, you first need to set up a lightbox. If you don’t have one, make the set by putting a piece of cloth as a backdrop. Black or any dark color will create more contrast.

How to Photograph Smoke in a Studio Setting

Subject

To create the smoke, you can use an incense stick. It’s the best way to create continuous smoke for a long period of time.

Place the incense far enough from the background so that it’s well separated and the light won’t spill into it.

Light

Set up your flash to the side of the subject. Never place it directly in front of the smoke or it will illuminate the background. Then put a piece of cardboard to direct the light towards the subject. For more tips on this, you can check How to Control Your Background Tones by Manipulating Light Fall-Off.

It also works best if it’s a hard light.

You can always use a continuous light source too, but be sure to narrow the light fall-off by using a modifier or barn doors.

If you place the light in front you won’t get the dark backdrop you need.

Camera

Place your camera in front of the subject, the distance will depend on the focal length of the lens you’re working with. I recommend a telephoto lens because you will get better background compression. To help you decide which one is good for you, see this article.

With a telephoto lens, you can work with a smaller background. The left image was made with a 35mm lens, and the one on the right with a 75mm.

Also, if you work with a telephoto, the background can be smaller. And not less important, you can position your camera further away, which will protect your lens from any damage by the smoke.

Settings

Again, this will depend on the focal length, the distance between camera and subject, and the intensity of your flash. However, I can give you some pointers to take into consideration.

Shutter speed

When setting your shutter speed, try to keep your settings fast so that the lines of the smoke are well-defined, instead of a blurry cloud. This is particularly important if you’re working with a wide source, as with this pot of boiling water. If you’re using something smaller, like a stick of incense, the effect is less drastic. Still, don’t underestimate it.

Aperture

Keep in mind that the smoke is not a flat, static surface. You want your aperture to be wide enough to keep it all in focus. But you don’t want it to be too much that it will capture the texture of the background. Don’t forget to consider other elements of the composition if you have them.

How to Photograph Smoke in a Studio Setting

Focus

Using manual focus, set it before you turn off the lights. Focus the source of steam or smoke you’re using. For example, the tip of the incense stick if you’re going to do some abstract smoke shots. For this to work, you need to use a tripod so you don’t change your distance.

How to Photograph Smoke in a Studio Setting

Extra tip: to create more smoke, capture the image just after you put out the flame. If you placed it inside a container, keep it covered to concentrate the smoke, then uncover it to let it all out at once.

ISO

Keep your ISO as low as your lighting and other settings allow you to go. This is because you want to avoid noise as much as possible, and dark colors make it more evident.

Higher ISO settings create more digital noise. This image was taken with a 12800 ISO. Notice all the color speckles? That’s the noise.

Conclusion

This is a very basic studio set-up to photograph smoke that can be done at home with minimum equipment. As you can see, it can still be very effective to photograph smoke. While this can be very easy, capturing the perfect smoke shot may not be, so keep shooting until you’re happy with it.

Nikon updates nearly all of its Windows software after anti-virus confusion

A number of Nikon Windows programs have been mistakenly identified as viruses by certain anti-virus programs. While there was no actual threat to the security of the computers the programs were installed on, Nikon has released an update for all of its software products to ensure the programs don’t get incorrectly flagged by anti-virus software going forward.

In the changelog of each of the updates, Nikon says it’s ’Fixed an issue that caused certain anti-virus software to mistakenly identify the “IFGLS001.exe” and “ifasglog.exe” files in the installation destination folder as viruses during or after installation.’

Panasonic to sell remaining stake in semiconductor joint venture in face of ‘aggressive’ competition

Panasonic has announced it’ll be selling off its minority stake in its semiconductor joint venture for $ 250M to Taiwan’s Nuvoton Technology Corp after deciding it would need to invest more than it is prepared to do to compete and expand in the market.

Back in 2014, Panasonic offloaded a majority of its semiconductor unit to a joint venture with Isreali semiconductor manufacturer TowerJazz. The joint venture, which is owned 51% by TowerJazz and 49% by Panasonic, was initially believed to be sold as a whole, but TowerJazz has since confirmed in a statement that it will retain its majority stake and ultimate control of the operation following the transition:

‘TowerJazz, the global specialty foundry leader, clarifies following recent press releases in connection with the sale of Panasonic semiconductor business to Nuvoton that it will not sell its TPSCo shares and will maintain its 51% ownership and Board control in TPSCo.’

Part of the semiconductor business is involved with making imaging sensors for cameras and smartphones, as well as for numerous industrial purposes. It isn’t clear at the moment exactly how this will impact the company’s camera division or the upcoming 8K organic sensor planned for the 2020 Olympics, but all intellectual property and contracts are to be transferred to the buyer in June next year — a month before the start of the Olympics.

Panasonic says it’s tried to streamline its semiconductor business and that it has divested parts of the business already to make it less expensive to operate, but that it would need much more investment to expand the division and to compete in an aggressive market.

The sale may not have very much effect at all as the majority of Panasonic’s Lumix cameras use third-party sensors, and the majority of sensors made by the division being sold were for the automotive business and industrial applications. However, the division lists 16MP CMOS sensors for stills cameras and 20MP Super 35mm sensors for broadcast cameras in its offering. Whether the technology and manufacturing facilities for the 8K organic sensor are also part of the deal we have yet to discover.

We have contacted Panasonic for comment and to clarify what this might mean, if anything, for its camera business. We will update the article if we receive a statement.

Announcement of the Transfer of the Semiconductor Business

OSAKA, Japan – Panasonic Corporation (hereinafter, the “Company”) announced that it will transfer (hereinafter, the “Transfer”) the semiconductor business mainly operated by Panasonic Semiconductor Solutions Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “PSCS”), which is a 100% consolidated subsidiary company of Panasonic Equity Management Japan G.K.(hereinafter, “PEMJ”), a 100% consolidated subsidiary company of the Company, to Nuvoton Technology Corporation (hereinafter, “Nuvoton”), a Taiwan-based semiconductor company under the umbrella of Winbond Electronics Corporation group, and enter into the Stock and Asset Transfer Agreement (hereinafter, the “Agreement”) with this company. A decision was authorized by the Board resolution today.

1. Background and Purpose
The semiconductor business of the Company has shifted from the AV area to the automotive and industrial area over the last few years. The Company has positioned the “Sensing” technologies such as image sensors, and the “LiB Application” technologies such as IC for battery management and MOSFET for LiB battery circuits protection as the focus areas, and the Company has aimed to grow its business by consolidating resources in these areas.

In the meantime, in April 2014, the Company transferred the semiconductor wafer production process of the Hokuriku Plants (Uozu, Tonami, Arai) to the joint venture company formed with Tower Semiconductor Ltd., an Israel based foundry company. Furthermore, in June 2014, the Company transferred its semiconductor assembly plants in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia to UTAC Manufacturing Services Ltd. (hereinafter, “UTAC”) having its headquarter in Hong Kong. The Company has been strengthening its competitiveness by becoming an asset-light company, consolidating and eliminating its offices and production bases in both Japan and overseas for the mitigation of business risks.

However, the competitive environment surrounding the semiconductor business has become extremely severe due to aggressive expansion of competitors, huge investments in the focused area, and industry reorganization through M&A. In such an environment, the Company has come to believe that the even stronger business operation and the continuous investment is critical in order to achieve a sustained growth and expansion of the semiconductor business. Accordingly, it has concluded that the best option would be to transfer the business to Nuvoton, which highly appreciates the Company’s accumulated technical and product capabilities and therefore has a potential to lead stable growth by leveraging those capabilities.

2. About the Transfer
(1) Business restructuring before the Transfer: Just prior to the Transfer, the Company will restructure the semiconductor business as follows.

  • All shares of Panasonic Industrial Devices Systems and Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “PIDST”) and Panasonic Industrial Devices Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “PIDE”), which are wholly-owned subsidiaries of PEMJ, will be handed over to PSCS by way of company split.
  • The semiconductor business-related intellectual property rights and certain business contracts held by the Company and/or the Company’s subsidiaries and the semiconductor business-related assets and debt of the Company will be handed over to PSCS by way of either company split or asset transfer.
  • All PSCS’s shares held by PEMJ will be handed over to a to-be-established, wholly-owned subsidiary of PEMJ (hereinafter, the “PSCS Holding Company”) by way of share transfer.
  • The semiconductor-related components (lead frame) business of PSCS will be handed over to a to-be-established, wholly-owned subsidiary of PEMJ by way of company split.

(2) Details of the Transfer: Upon completion of the business restructuring above, the Transfer will be carried out as per the details below with target effective date of June 1, 2020 (scheduled).

  • PEMJ will transfer all PSCS Holding Company’s shares to Nuvoton.
  • The business of Panasonic Industrial Devices Semiconductor Asia (an in-house company in charge of development and sales of semiconductors; hereinafter, “PIDSCA”) under Panasonic Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. (a Singaporean entity owned by the Company through its subsidiary; hereinafter, “PA”) will be handed over to Singapore- based entity owned by Nuvoton.
  • Certain facilities and inventories attributable to the semiconductor business of Panasonic Semiconductor (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “PSCSZ”) will be transferred to China-based entity owned by Nuvoton.

3. Other
The Agreement is based on the precondition of obtaining approvals from the authorities responsible for competition laws and other government agencies of the respective country and region. In addition, the planned date of the Transfer including business restructuring before the Transfer may differ significantly in light of the duration required for completing the procedures for obtaining approval and other procedures concerning permissions etc.

CamRanger 2 brings faster speeds, increased compatibility and more

When launched in 2013, the original CamRanger was one of the first devices that let you wirelessly control a DSLR via a smartphone phone app. Since then the company launched the CamRanger mini which mainly focused on offering CamRanger capability in a smaller package.

Now the CamRanger 2 has been released and the updated version is larger than the original but supports more camera models, is faster and comes with additional features.

The original CamRanger could be used with Canon and Nikon DSLRs. Compatibility has now been expanded to Sony Fujifilm mirrorless models, opening up new customer groups to the device. A full list of compatible cameras can be found on the CamRanger website.

There are now also a new standard tripod mount that opens up new attachment options and a for multiple camera attachment options and a SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot which should be useful for use with cameras with only a single card slot.

Despite a larger capacity rechargeable battery (3300mAh vs 1800mAh on the original), according to CamRanger battery life has decreased from approximately six to five hours, though.

On the plus side the new model now supports 5Ghz wireless networking in addition to the 2.4Ghz of the original. The range has been doubled from 250 feet to 500 feet (152m) as well.

New features include a ‘quick RAW’ viewing mode which uses an embedded JPG-image for faster reviewing, advanced image rating, video viewing and downloading, saving to SD-card, editing, croppind and more.
