Adobe updates Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC and Camera Raw

Adobe has released its August 2018 update for Adobe Lightroom CC (v1.5), Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5) and Adobe Camera Raw (v10.5). Across the board, the update brings along bug fixes, new features and support for more cameras and lenses.

First on the docket is Adobe Lightroom CC (v1.5). The stand-out feature of the update is the ability to store albums locally. Now, you can download images from an album onto your computer and edit them offline if you’re going to be without internet for a bit. The next time you get internet the images will sync to the files stored in Creative Cloud.

Adobe Lightroom CC (v1.5) also brings the ability to see what albums a particular image belongs to. Windows users now have support for Apple’s HEIC image file format as well.

Onto Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5), Adobe has added the ability to upload presets and profiles in bulk, rather than having to do it one-by-one. ‘You can import XMP presets and profiles, DCP profiles, and LCP profiles as part of a zip file,’ says Adobe in its press release. ‘However, .lrtemplate presets can’t be imported as part of a zip file.’

Adobe also added two new book types (Blurb Magazine and Blurb Trade Book), as well as a new paper type (Standard Layflat) inside the Book module of Lightroom Classic CC. Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5) for Windows also receives support for Apple’s HEIC image file format.

Bug fixes inside Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5) include fixes for various preset issues, exporting problems, metadata errors and performance issues. You can find a full list of squashed bugs on Adobe’s announcement page.

The update to Adobe Camera Raw (v10.5) is rather minor, as it only adds support for three new cameras and eight new lenses. Support for these new cameras and lenses has also been added to Adobe Lightroom CC (v1.5) and Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5). Adobe Creative Cloud updates bring preset and profile syncing to Lightroom CC

A new batch paste option in Lightroom CC allows settings to be quickly synced across multiple images.

Adobe has announced a raft of updates across its suite of Creative Cloud apps, including Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC.

For photographers, Lightroom CC receives the most substantial updates, which include easy synchronization of presets and profiles across all devices. Preset and profile syncing works with Lightroom’s inbuilt options, as well as custom and third-party presets and profiles. Presets can now be created in Lightroom CC on mobile devices, too. iOS devices also gain a new chromatic aberration removal tool, and a beta ‘long-exposure’ mode which combines multiple images and stacks them to simulate the effect of a long shutter speed without the need for a tripod.

Lightroom CC for iOS now includes a ‘Technology Preview’ of a new long exposure photo mode, which simulates the effect of using a long shutter speed by combining several conventionally-captured exposures into one.

For those using Lightroom CC on a desktop computer, Adobe has improved batch syncing of settings across multiple images, and enhanced the options for sharing albums.

Users of Lightroom Classic CC are promised a substantial update ‘coming soon’ but in the meantime, Adobe has provided an iterative release centering on ‘speed, stability, and a focus on professional workflows’. To that end, Adobe has added new ways of accessing and sorting presets, new color labels for organizing folders, and faster searching inside them.

Really Right Stuff updates its entire tripod line-up with new features, better ergonomics

Tripod manufacturer Really Right Stuff has released updates to its entire product line. The company, which recently moved its operations from California to Utah, has revamped all 17 of its tripods, with improved components and features from top to bottom.

Like all of its previous tripods, each Really Right Stuff tripod is hand-assembled in the United States. The ‘Mark 2’ versions include both ergonomic and feature changes compared to the original versions.

One of the most notable changes is the addition of multiple 1/4″-20 sockets around the base of the tripod. These additional sockets provide more options for attaching accessories, such as Really Right Stuff’s phone mount and optional carry strap.

Speaking of attaching stuff to the tripod, Really Right Stuff has also added a weight hook to the underside of all 17 tripods. This not only gives you a convenient place to store your bag, but also acts as a ballast to keep your frames steady in windy environments.

The legs of the tripods now have sealed twist locks for extending and retracting the legs during use. Really right Stuff says ‘the new sealed twist lock minimizes the amount of contaminants, such as sand and grit, that gets caught inside the twist locks.’

Also, opening and closing of the legs should take less effort due to an added vented clevis. Really Right Stuff notes that the added air vents ‘prevent pressure gradients from building up, allowing smoother leg extraction and collapse.’ To show just how much thought went into what seems like such a small detail, Really Right Stuff explains how the ‘inward-facing vents also ensure air flow is directed towards the center of the tripod and away from mounted lens elements.’

The new tripods are also designed with interchangeable feet, which can be swapped out to one of the three options Really Right Stuff offers.

Lastly, the Mark 2 version of the tripods now feature an updated Sure Grip that uses the same hex screws as Really Right Stuff’s L-plates. So, if you’re shooting with a lot of Really Right Stuff gear, you’ll now only need to carry around a single tool.

DxO updates Nik Collection, releases PhotoLab 1.2 with U Point local adjustments

DxO Photolab 1.2 includes improved local adjustments.

DxO Labs – which split from DxO Mark in January – announced bankruptcy a few months back, but with a silver-lining: its flagship desktop software, Photolab, would receive a free update by summer. The company also announced that the Nik Software Collection – purchased from Google in late 2017 – would receive its first update since 2017.

As of today, both promises have been fulfilled, in a welcome indication that DxO Labs seems committed to its desktop editing business.

Nik Collection 2018

DxO engineers spent about six months working on code improvements to the Nik Collection, mostly with the aim of fixing bugs to ensure operational stability on the latest 64-bit Macs and PCs. There are no new features, but all seven plugins should also now work properly with the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop and Elements.

This is the first update to the collection since 2017, but it will come at a cost: until July 1st you can download the collection for $ 49.99 / £39.99 / €49.99. But after July 1st it will cost $ 69 / £59 / €69. There’s no word yet from DxO on how much future updates will cost, but we’re told that the company plans on releasing a new version yearly and it seems likely that those who download version 2018 will get a discount on future versions.

Photolab 1.2

The latest version of Photolab, which is free for current users, incorporates the Nik Collection’s U Point technology, adding a much-loved set of local adjustments to the popular editing software. This update also adds hue and selective tone local adjustments, as well as support for recent cameras.

RIP DxO ONE Camera

This final bit of news should come as no surprise, but the DxO ONE camera is officially discontinued. The camera will continue to be sold by some retailers in the USA and France as long as they have inventory, so if you’ve been sitting on the fence about buying one, you’d better hurry.

Nik Collection 2018 by DxO: Better user experience and stability

DxO PhotoLab 1.2 improves its local adjustment tools that integrate U Point technology

Recently awarded the 2018 TIPA Award for Best Image Processing Software, DxO PhotoLab (formerly DxO OpticsPro) offers a complete RAW and JPEG processing solution based on optical corrections from mathematically established laboratory models, as well as such exclusive features as PRIME noise reduction technology and DxO Smart Lighting intelligent exposure optimization.

DxO has integrated Nik Software’s U Point technology, acquired from Google in late 2017, into DxO PhotoLab. This exclusive technology allows photographers to apply local settings in a non-destructive RAW stream to specific areas in an image.

Hasselblad firmware updates for X1D and H6D add a host of new features

Hasselblad has added a bunch of new features to the X1D and H6D in firmware updates released yesterday. Version 1.21 adds a white balance sampler tool, audio notifications, tethered image support, the option to zoom in to 100% with a single button press when reviewing captured images, and more to both models, in addition to a few model-exclusive updates.

The X1D gets exposure bracketing for the first time, with the option to use 0.3EV, 0.5EV, 1EV, 2EV or 3EV steps across 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9 frames. Users can choose the sequence of the frames and whether the aperture or shutter speed is used as the variable in manual exposure mode. A new intervalometer has also been added, allowing users to create timelapse sequences with no limit to the number of frames recorded. The mode offers fixed lengths of 2 to 99 frames, but also a mode that will continue shooting until the action is stopped manually. Images can be recorded with intervals of 2 to 60 seconds.

Handling changes to the X1D with the latest firmware included adding the ability to scroll through recorded images while zoomed in when using the EVF, and a mode that automatically zooms in to the area beneath the focus point immediately after picture is recorded. There is now an option to set a shutter speed limit when using Auto ISO, a reworking of the crop mode cycle that makes finding the one you want quicker, and autofocus support for all lenses from the H system (other than the 120mm macro) when the camera is fitted with the XH adapter.

The biggest change for H6D users is the introduction of custom profiles that will make it quicker to switch between configurations of settings for different shooting conditions. Seven profiles can be recorded for individual shooters or for when more than one photographer uses the same camera.

Hasselblad Firmware Update 1.21 for X1D and H6D

Hasselblad’s 1.21 Firmware Update demonstrates their commitment to technological innovation with new features for the X1D and H6D

With the 1.21 Firmware Update, Hasselblad conveys their dedication to continuously develop and enhance its world-renowned camera systems. This most recent firmware update for the X1D and H6D adds to the photographer’s ease in not only capturing one’s shot, but their options for creativity as well.

Hasselblad is pleased to announce new updates for both the X1D and H6D including a White Balance Tool, allowing the photographer to set the colour temperature and tint directly on a photograph when shooting. These values can then be applied to all following images until the setting is turned off.

New features specific to the X1D include an Interval Timer and Exposure Bracketing. Using the Interval Timer, photographers can further their creativity with time-lapse shots. Exposure Bracketing gives users options in their exploration of varied exposure settings, capturing up to 9 frames with customisable sequences of bracketing exposures.

A highlight particular to the H6D allows for the user to create seven customisable profiles. By accessing the General Settings Menu on the main display, the user can easily navigate to the Profiles Menu and save the current camera settings to one of the seven profiles. With these preset settings customised by the user, the photographer has the tools to swiftly change camera settings without losing time, and ultimately, their shot.

Firmware updates are available from the “My Hasselblad > Downloads” section online at Hasselblad.com. Users can update their firmware simply by downloading the “.cim” file to an SD card and selecting Firmware Update from the Service Menu on their camera.

DxO Labs confirms bankruptcy, but promises updates to Nik Collection and DxO PhotoLab

DxO Labs has released an official update on its financial situation in the form of a blog post on its website, and it’s not as doom-and-gloom as it seems… or sounds. While the statement confirms DxO Labs has chosen “to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection and is now in the process of restructuring the business,” it also says the restructuring “will not affect our customers in any way.”

In fact, DxO Labs says the process should take no more than a few weeks to complete. And not only should this news “not affect customers,” DxO Labs took the opportunity to confirm that a couple of new products are on the horizon.

According to the statement, DXO Labs plans to release a free update (version 1.2) to its flagship program DxO PhotoLab sometime in June. The update will add improved local correction features and support for seen new cameras ‘including the Canon EOS 2000D and the Sony A7 III.’

In a quick swipe at Adobe, DxO writes that this impending update will serve as:

…an opportunity for us to reiterate our commitment to the ‘perpetual license’ model (as opposed to a subscription model) that allows our customers to update their products according to their needs, rather than in a constrained manner.

And if that’s not enough good news to distract you from the Chapter 11 talk, DxO Labs also confirmed plans to update the Nik Software Collection.

In June, the Nik Software Collection will receive its first update since being bought from Google in December of 2017. The update is said to focus on fixing bugs and to make sure the plug-ins and standalone programs work smoothly on both PC and MacOS computers.

Fujifilm releases firmware updates for X-H1, X-E3, and X100F

It looks like Fujifilm’s software engineers have been working overtime the past few weeks. Today, the company has released firmware updates for three of its X-series cameras: the brand new X-H1, as well as the older X-E3 and X100F. In all cases, the new software addresses some user-reported bugs and improves camera performance.

Version 1.20 of the XE-3 firmware is the biggest of the three and comes with the following improvements:

  • Support for Fujifilm X Raw Studio: camera users can now convert Raw files, including batch processing, with the free Fujifilm X Raw Studio software.
  • Backup and restoring of camera settings via Fujifilm X Acquire: when connecting the camera to a computer via USB, photographers can now use the Fujifilm X Acquire software to backup camera settings to a file and restore them. It is also possible to copy settings from one camera to another.
  • Compatibility with the Fujinon XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens: when using this lens the focus ring function now switches automatically. In focus modes S and C it is used for Fine Zoom adjustment. In focus mode M it controls the manual focus. In addition the zoom position of the lens is now memorized when the camera is powered off and maintained while switching into playback mode.
  • Improved radio flash controller operation: users can now shoot with compatible third party studio flash units in high speed sync. or TTL mode, using radio controllers.
  • Enlarged and customizable display indicators and information: users can now enlarge indicators and shooting information displayed in the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor. You will also be able to customize the location of the information on the display.
  • Enhanced Bluetooth connectivity via Camera Remote app: with the Fujifilm Camera Remote app user can now update the camera firmware via bluetooth and remote-trigger compatible cameras.

Version 2.10 of the X100F firmware offers the same capability to enlarge and customize display information and backup and restore of camera settings via X Acquire as the update for the XE-3.

The update to firmware version 1.02 for the Fuji X-H1 is fairly minor, simply fixing a bug that could cause image files to be overwritten when an image folder is selected through the Select Folder function in the Setup menu.

Fujifilm to release spring firmware updates for six cameras

Fujifilm is releasing firmware updates, both large and small, for six of its X-series cameras, with the X-T2 receiving the most significant changes. These updates will begin rolling out this month and will continue through May. Some of the highlights include:

GFX 50S

New Firmware Updates for GFX, X-H1, X-T2, X-Pro2, X-E3 and X100F

Fujifilm will release new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S, X-H1, X-T2, X-Pro2, X-E3 and X100F. Updates will vary by model and are expected in April 2018 and May 2018.

1. FUJIFILM GFX 50S (Ver.3.10) – Available in May 2018

• Compatible with the newly developed FUJINON GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR lens including “Focus Preset,” “AF-L” and “AF-ON”.
• Addition of “Flicker Reduction” to reduce flicker in both pictures and display when shooting under fluorescent lighting.
• Addition of “Select Folder” and “Create Folder” allowing users to choose the folder that images are stored in and to create a new folder.
• New “Large Indicators Mode” enabling users to enlarge indicators and information in the viewfinder and/or LCD monitor and to customize the location of where the information is shown on the display.
• Addition of Fn button support for “35mm Format Mode” for quick setting changes.

2. FUJIFILM X-H1 (Ver.1.1.0) – Available in May 2018

• Addition of Focus Bracketing allows the photographer to shoot focus distance bracketing of up to 999 frames.
• Compatible with new cinema lenses FUJINON MKX18-55mmT2.9 and FUJINON MKX50-135mmT2.9.

Instagram updates news feed, makes it a bit more chronological

Yesterday, Instagram announced some changes to the News Feed that might quiet some of the grumbling that’s been going on ever since the app switched from a Chronological to an Algorithmic feed. No, the rumors were not true and the company is not going back to the chronological feed in full, but your Instagram feed will begin surfacing newer posts closer to the top of your feed from now on.

The announcement comes less than a week after Instagram was forced to debunk a viral rumor that it was testing a return to the Chronological feed. But it seems that rumor might have contained a grain of truth.

Yesterday’s update is actually two-fold. First, newer posts are now “more likely to appear first in feed” so you don’t have to scroll through a bunch of posts from several days ago in order to see images that were posted this morning. And Second, the feed will no longer update automatically; instead, Instagram is testing a “New Posts” button that allows you to manually refresh the feed only when you’re ready.

The latter change is a response to feedback that “it can feel unexpected when your feed refreshes and automatically bumps you to the top.” I can personally relate to this annoyance, and I’m sure some of our readers can, too.

Profile names and hashtags are now clickable in your Instagram bio.

Finally, right before this announcement went live, Instagram also revealed that it would now allow users to link hashtags and profile links in their bio. So if you add your professional photo profile to your personal bio or visa-versa, that @-name will now be clickable. Same goes for hashtags.

Adding a level of security to this, whenever you link someone’s profile in your bio, their account will receive a notification, and they can choose to remove the link.

All of these changes are rolling out now, although the News Feed changes still in the ‘testing’ phase. To take advantage of the updates yourself, just make sure you’re using the latest version of Instagram on either iOS or Android.

Changes to Improve Your Instagram Feed

Today we’re introducing changes to give you more control over your feed and ensure the posts you see are timely.

We’ve heard it can feel unexpected when your feed refreshes and automatically bumps you to the top. So today we’re testing a “New Posts” button that lets you choose when you want to refresh, rather than it happening automatically. Tap the button and you’ll be taken to new posts at the top of feed — don’t tap, and you’ll stay where you are. We hope this makes browsing Instagram much more enjoyable.

Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in feed. With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about. So if your best friend shares a selfie from her vacation in Australia, it will be waiting for you when you wake up.

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about improvements we’re making to feed. Our goal is to be the best place to share and connect with the people and interests that matter most to you.

Introducing Hashtag and Profile Links in Bio

Today, we’re introducing hashtag and profile links in bio, a new way to express yourself and the things you care about. Now when you include a # or @ in your bio, they become live links that lead to a hashtag page or another profile.

In December, we introduced the ability to follow hashtags, giving you new ways to stay connected with the interests, hobbies, passions and communities you care about. With hashtag and profile links in your bio, you can express yourself and your interests right in your profile. Whether you’re a #guitarlover, into #pencilsketching or have a #makeuptutorial account, now you can link to any hashtag or profile you want.

To add a hashtag or profile link in your bio, just tap on Edit Profile and go to the bio section. When you type a # or @, you will see a list of recommended hashtags and accounts in the typeahead. Once you select the hashtags and accounts you want, they will automatically be linked in your bio.

When you mention someone else’s profile in your bio, they will receive a notification and can choose to remove the link to their profile. Their profile will remain in your bio but without a link.

Fujifilm releases X Raw Studio and updates X-T2, X-T20, GFX 50S firmware

Fujifilm has announced its X Raw Studio Conversion System software, which it first teased back at Photokina. The software is essentially a viewer for the in-camera Raw converters that already exist on X and GFX series cameras. In fact, the software doesn’t actually do any processing – the camera does, over a USB connection. Fujifilm claims that X Raw Studio is more than twenty times faster than the SilkyPix-based converter. The macOS version is available for download today, with a Windows application to follow in February.

The software adjusts exactly the same parameters as on the camera and supports batch processing and saving conversion profiles. As you’d expect, a side-by-side viewer is available. As of today only the GFX 50S and X-T2 are supported, with the X-Pro2 and X100F to follow in December, all via firmware updates.

Speaking of which, the company also posted firmware updates for the X-T2, X-T20 and GFX 50S that were announced at Photokina. Changes include:

  • New AF tracking algorithm enhances AF-C to track moving subjects half the size, or moving twice as fast as previous models.
