Google updates Photos app with advanced editing features

17 Nov

Yesterday, Google introduced its pretty impressive new PhotoScan app and presented RAISR, an upsampling method that uses machine learning. You would think that was enough innovation in imaging for one day, but no, Google also implemented some pretty interesting upgrades to its Photos app that be found pre-installed on most Android smartphones and is also available for iOS devices and on the web.

A new auto enhance function balances exposure and saturation in order to maximize detail at the tap of a button. For those who prefer more manual input, advanced editing controls for light and color allow you to fine tune your images using a range of sliders for highlights, shadows and warmth among others. The Deep Blue parameter allows for partial adjustment of the blue tones in images of sea and sky and there is an equivalent slider for fine-tuning skin tones.

In addition there are 12 new smart filters that Google calls looks. Looks use machine learning to analyze the contents of an image and then make edits based on brightness, darkness, warmth, or saturation before the final filter is applied. If you want to try the new features you won’t have to wait. The upgraded Google Photos app is rolling out today across Android, iOS and the web.

Adobe updates Lightroom for Android and web, Photoshop Express for iOS

12 Nov

Adobe today dropped a fresh round of updates to its mobile and web photo app offerings.

A new version of Lightroom for Android features a Raw Technology Preview for the mobile app — like the one introduced for iOS in July — that lets you import Raw images directly from the camera into your device. With this update, you can now capture, edit, share and access full resolution Raw photos with your Android app, now at version 2.2. In addition to Raw image-processing advantages, the Android app also syncs files with Lightroom on your other devices, including the desktop app and web, complete with edits, ratings and flags.

As explained in a new Adobe blog post to pull this off, you’ll need a special USB adapter — an on-the-go or OTG cable — to connect your camera to your mobile device, and transfer images via PTP mode. OTG cables are inexpensive and come in different configurations, so you’ll want to search for one that matches the ports built into both your camera and your device.

As with the iOS app, Lightroom for Android supports the same Raw files as the desktop app and Adobe Camera Raw. Check to see whether your camera is supported.

Lightroom for web updates include enhancements to the app’s share feature, now letting you add a header graphic, sections and text to promote better engagement and storytelling. That hooks into updates to Adobe Portfolio, the company’s utility that lets you create professional online portfolios: You can now send images from Lightroom on the web to Portfolio. Just create a new project in Portfolio from within Lightroom’s Web app and copy photos into the project. You can also now download original images (if they are available in the cloud) from within Lightroom on the web.

In separate news, Adobe has also announced a major update to Photoshop Express app for iOS. New features include Adobe Photoshop Express Collages, which create high-quality collages with intelligent layout and style transfer automation choices. The update also features Google photo integration, letting you select and import images from a Google Photos account, edit them in Photoshop Express, and share or export them.

All new Lightroom and Photoshop Express features are available now.

09 Nov

Fujifilm has released two firmware updates: firmware version 5.00 for the X-T1 and version 2.01 for the X-Pro2. Unfortunately, X-T2 owners will have to wait a few more weeks for their own firmware update, which is now scheduled to release on November 29th. When the X-T2 firmware is finally released, it will add support for tethering with Adobe Lightroom.

The new X-Pro2 camera body firmware update brings several bug fixes, as well as improvements to AF tracking and phase detection AF accuracy, improvements to optical image stabilization when using the electronic shutter, and the addition of an auto power save feature to the ‘Power Management’ menu.

The X-T1 firmware, meanwhile, is very small, and involves added support for the EF-X500 Shoe Mount Flash, as well as new menu and function items related to it.

Sigma introduces trio of firmware updates for Quattro, MC-11 and 150-600mm F5-6.3

28 Oct

Lens and camera manufacturer Sigma has released three firmware updates that improve the functionality of its sd Quattro camera, the company’s MC-11 mount adapter and the two versions of its 150-600mm F5-6.3 zoom lens.

The update to the sd Quatrro camera deals with an issue that causes the camera to freeze when being controlled via the company’s Capture Pro tethered-shooting software package, while the update for the MC-11 prepares the device for Sigma’s new and forthcoming 12-24mm F4, 500mm F4 and 85mm F1.4 lenses. The MC-11 allows users to mount certain Sigma EF- and SA-mount lenses to Sony E-mount cameras, and the update improves AF accuracy of EF-mount lenses that aren’t fully compatible with the system. It also allows lenses with Optical Stabilizer built-in to switch off in-body stabilization systems to use the in-lens system even when the lens isn’t fully compatible with the MC-11. With the firmware installed the start-up time of the combination is also improved.

AF accuracy is also the main theme of the update to the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports and Contemporary lenses in the Canon and Sigma mounts. The lenses will perform better when used with the MC-11 mount adapter, and with the sd Quattro in the case of the Sigma mount version. The update also reduces the sound made by the aperture blades in the Canon mount versions during filming both with and without the MC-11 – and the lenses are now fully functional with the Canon Digital Cinema Camera EOS C300 Mark ll.

Those with the Sigma USB dock can install these updates themselves, and those who don’t have it can take their lenses and MC-11 to a Sigma approved service center and have the firmware updates installed for free. For more information visit the Sigma website.

Modest Updates: Nikon D3400 Review

18 Oct

Key Features

  • 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • 11-point phase detect auto-focus system
  • 1080/60p video capability
  • Fixed 3″ 920k-dot LCD screen
  • 5/fps burst shooting
  • Bluetooth LE for image transfer

The D3400 is a very modestly updated version of the D3300. It’s an entry level DSLR targeted toward first-time ILC shooters and those who are ready to move on from their smartphones to a more advanced shooting platform.

The camera is built around the same 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor found in its predecessor along with an ‘EXPEED 4’ image processor, Full HD video capture and an 11-point autofocus system. Unfortunately the camera doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it does have Bluetooth LE connectivity for transferring images from the camera to a smart phone via the ‘SnapBridge’ app.

Nikon packs a lot of very desirable features into the D3400 for the price.

In terms of competition, the D3400’s sits between the Canon Rebel T6 and the Canon Rebel T6i. The D3400’s $ 649 launch price for a kit with the new AF-P 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 VR lens puts it between the $ 549 list price of for the T6/EOS 1300D kit and the significantly more expensive $ 899 MSRP for the T6i with the 18-55mm VR zoom. The T6 has a lower resolution, 18MP sensor but its lower price makes it a threat at this price-sensitive point in the market.

Specs Comparison

The table below illustrates that not much has changed from the D3300 to the D3400. The biggest changes seen in the D3400 are in battery life (which we suspect is due to the less powerful flash), weight and the new built in Bluetooth LE that works with SnapBridge to enable photo sharing. The D3400 also tends to come kitted with a new ‘AF-P’ version of the 18-55mm VR lens which uses a new focus motor to offer improved performance in live view and video.

For beginning DSLR shooters the elimination of the external mic port (if video is important to you) and, more notably, the Ultrasonic Sensor Cleaning from the D3400 is something to definitely keep in mind when deciding which camera to purchase.

If you’re not wedded to the idea of owning a DSLR, the Fujifilm X-A3 (which features an articulating touchscreen LCD and twin control dials), and the Sony a5100 (which acts more in the way of a point and shoot), are both mirrorless cameras. These offer excellent features and image quality in a much smaller package. These are definitely two other options to also consider looking at before making a purchase.

It is worth noting that the traditional DSLR still holds some key advantages over mirrorless rivals. They offer much better battery life and lens selection, for example. The optical viewfinder is another important factor for many photographers. For more on the subject, read our primer.

Gitzo updates Systematic tripod range with new materials, big feet and Easy Link sockets

05 Oct

Gitzo has introduced a new range of Systematic tripods that it says are more stable and stronger, and which feature new locking mechanisms for the leg sections. The latest models use what the company calls Carbon eXact for the leg tubing, which it claims offers improved ‘balance between rigidity and weight’. The Systematic range is Gitzo’s top end series and the tripods are designed for heavy cameras and long lenses. Larger feet have been introduced for the new models to prevent slipping and for making uneven ground more easy to rest on, and the twist-lock leg sections have been given G-lock Ultra clamps that Gitzo says are quicker and easier to use.

The company has also added a connector for the Manfrotto Easy Link system in a first for the Gitzo line-up. This threaded socket allows accessory arms and clamps to be attached to the casting of the tripod so reflectors, flash units, trays and other accessories can be held in place.

The new models will be priced from $ 799.99/£649.95 and a new range of monopods will start at $ 319.99/£214.95.

For more information see the Gitzo website.

Press release:

Gitzo introduces:
The New Generation of Photography Support Solutions

October 2016 – Gitzo, pioneers in developing some of the most advanced and revolutionary technologies for professional camera equipment, proudly introduce the new generation Systematic tripod family and the latest Monopod family, setting new industry standards in premium photography equipment.

The iconic Gitzo Systematic tripod family is the high-end choice for exacting professional photographers who use long lenses and heavy cameras and require extreme precision – down to the smallest detail – in their work and equipment. The new Gitzo Systematic tripods leverage the latest innovation for the greatest performance ever: the leg tubes are upgraded to Gitzo’s latest generation Carbon eXact, improving the balance between rigidity and weight. New, 50mm diameter big feet enable ultimate stability, preventing slipping and movement. The new G-lock Ultra allows even more comfortable operation and protection while the leg angle selectors guarantee a quicker switch between leg angles – further enhancing ergonomics. Moreover, the new Gitzo Systematic models feature the Easy Link attachment, a 3/8” thread through which a rich array of innovative photography accessories can be attached to facilitate the most advanced shooting techniques. The tripods are offered in a new sizing assortment.

The new Gitzo Monopods are designed to guarantee unfailing support for the highest quality equipment, enabling professional photographers to comfortably capture the golden moment. They are the ideal combination of rigidity, light weight, precision, rapid set up speed and ergonomics. Now even stronger than before thanks to state-of-the-art Carbon eXact tubing and G-lock Ultra leg locks, their new big foot ensures rock-solid footing on any surface while providing smooth movement with its integrated ball; the new models also feature enhanced aesthetics and improved sizing selection.
Series 4 Gitzo Monopod models (top leg diameter 37.0mm) replace the previous Series 5 models; the slimmer top tube contributes to an easier grip and lighter weight, while ensuring rigidity from the stiff Carbon eXact tubes.

Underscoring Gitzo’s dedication to groundbreaking excellence, the refinements to the new Systematic tripods and Monopods – in terms of strength, stability and rigidity, safety and security, set-up speed, ease of use and ergonomics – set new paradigms in the photography equipment market.

Gitzo photography products are superbly engineered to withstand the roughest handling. Precision assembly, high quality materials and fine control are distinguishing qualities that represent a market leader that has been unsurpassed for over half a century.

Pricing for the new Systematic tripods starts at £649.95. The new Systematic monopods are available from £214.95.

Manfrotto launches new Digital Director models and updates app with extra features

04 Aug

Manfrotto has added depth of field preview, an intervalometer and time-lapse controls to the app that runs its Digital Director camera-remote-control and external monitor device. Version 2.1 of the app, that is now compatible with a wider range of iPad models, also brings auto playback so images can be displayed automatically after they are recorded, as well as exposure bracketing and a more precise focusing system. The new app makes it possible to download Raw images to transfer via Wi-Fi web server, e-mail and FTP, and users can now send processed and resized JPEG files directly to social media apps on the host iPad.

Version 2.1 also imports metadata into the desktop version Adobe Lightroom via a plug-in. While the device offers controls for shooting video content it still isn’t possible to play video back through the Digital Director or to download movie files to the iPad. The Digital Director is compatible with 14 Canon EOS cameras and 15 DSLRs from Nikon but the company says that the new depth of field preview function only works with Canon models.

Manfrotto has also released a rigid case for the Digital Director as well as a sun shield and a range of frame inserts that convert the physical structure of the device to accommodate the different form factors of a series of iPad models.

The Digital Director now has configurations for iPad Pro 12,9”, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2 models, all of which cost $ 299.99/£249.95. For more information visit the Manfrotto website.
