Panasonic GH5 gets 10-bit 4:2:2 1080 video in first of promised firmware updates

When Panasonic introduced the Lumix DC-GH5, it made the bold promise that it would release not one, but two firmware updates that would significantly increase the performance of the camera. The first was to arrive in April and the second a bit later in ‘Summer 2017.’

True to its word, Panasonic has announced firmware v1.1 for the GH5, bringing 4:2:2 10-bit Full HD video capture and a series of enhanced capture options for anamorphic shooters.

The firmware brings 4:2:2 10-bit IPB capture at 100Mbps to 1080/59.97p resolution. Anamorphic shooters also get 10-bit 4:2:2 IPB capture but with the larger, 3328 x 2496 shooting region encoded at 150Mbps. The update also includes two minor bug-fixes.

Higher resolution anamorphic video capture, along with 400Mbps All-I capture for 4K and 200Mbps All-I capture for Full HD will follow in the summer release.

DC-GH5 Firmware Update Service Ver.1.1 for Expansion of 4:2:2 10-bit Video Recording Mode

Panasonic is announcing the new firmware update program Ver.1.1 for DC-GH5 to further enhance its performance. The new firmware Ver.1.1 enables 4:2:2 10-bit video recording in either FHD [MP4(LPCM)] / [MOV] and Anamorphic (4:3) mode, in addition to the existing 4K video recording mode.

Fujifilm releases GF 23mm and 110mm lenses, updates roadmap

Fujifilm has released a pair of G-mount lenses for its GFX 50S medium format camera, an adapter for using legacy Fujifilm large format lenses and information about future GF lenses.

The GF 23mm F4 R LM WR, equivalent to 18mm when mounted on the GFX 50S, has a linear focus motor, a nine-blade circular aperture, ED, super ED and aspherical elements, and a Nano GI coating. It’s also weather-resistant and functions down to -10°C/+14°F. It’ll ship in late June for $ 2599.

Also coming in June is the GF 110mm F2 R LM WR, which also has a nine-blade aperture, weather-sealing, and a linear motor. It has three ED and one super ED elements and is equivalent to 87mm when mounted on the GFX 50S. It will be priced at $ 2799.

Fujifilm also released a roadmap for future medium format lenses. Coming later this year is a 45mm F2.8 R WR (equivalent to 36mm), followed by a telephoto prime and teleconverter.

Lastly, the company will soon be offering the ‘View Camera Adapter G,’ which allows you to use the GFX 50S with 4×5 format view cameras. The adapter allows the GFX 50S to be used on a standard Graflok-style mount camera, enabling the use of large format Fujinon lenses, such as the CM series.

This prevents vignetting and achieves edge-to-edge sharpness. All FUJINON GF lenses have been designed to support sensors of over 100MP.

New Lenses Deliver Image Excellence

The FUJINON GF110mmF2 R LM WR is a medium telephoto lens perfect for portraits. With a focal length equivalent to 87mm in the 35mm format, it achieves a brightness of F2.0 when used wide open to deliver stunning bokeh.

The FUJINON GF23mmF4 R LM WR has a focal length equivalent to 18mm in the 35mm format and is expertly suited for landscape and architectural photography. Despite the super-wide angle of view, distortion is kept to a minimum, and with the high-resolution performance extending all the way to the edges, sharp depiction as if looking at an actual landscape is achieved.

New FUJINON GF Lens Development Roadmap

Fujifilm has publicly announced six lenses for the G Mount lens lineup this year. After the release of the GFX 50S and three G Mount lenses, Fujifilm is now unveiling a new roadmap with the additions of a telephoto prime lens and tele converter, in order to expand products covering telephoto ranges, an area with many requests from users.

With the addition of the two new lenses, the G Mount system lineup has been expanded to a total of eight lenses, achieving a fulfilling lineup to correspond to a wide range of user needs.

Also coming in June 2017 is a new View Camera Adapter G that can be used when shooting with the GFX 50S when using previous FUJINON large format camera lenses, such as the CM FUJINON. The adapter is mounted in the film camera loading position of the view camera which adopts the film format of the 4×5 size.

New Firmware Update Planned

Fujifilm will release a free firmware update for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S later this spring, adding new functionality and improving operability. New functions include computer tethering via Wi-Fi and improved operability in exposure compensation and autofocus performance in difficult scenes.

Apple is working on a reimagined Mac Pro, apologizes for lack of updates

In a conversation with several media outlets, Apple has reportedly apologized for disappointing customers of its Mac Pro desktop, and says that a re-imagined version is on the way. The company is also working on a new pro display and higher-end iMacs.

The unusually-shaped Mac Pro was introduced in 2013 and hasn’t seen an update since then. Depending on your viewpoint, that changed today when the company announced a change in pricing that upgrades the $ 3000 entry-level models specs. But the hardware essentially remains the same, and Apple says that an updated version wouldn’t be available anytime this year, at least.

According to reports from Buzzfeed and TechCrunch, Apple execs cited the Mac Pro’s unusual design as a contributor to its problems. The company has been unable to upgrade its hardware to keep pace with the needs of pro users. A design that was touted for its ability to dissipate heat evenly turned out to be its downfall when the industry began embracing large, single GPUs rather than the Mac Pro’s approach using two smaller chips.

Mac Pro users aren’t alone in their frustration with Apple – the latest Macbook Pro refresh brought rounds of criticism from photographers and other professionals unhappy with the the lack of an SD card slot and traditional USB ports.

Datacolor updates Spyder5 calibration software to add auto ambient light switching

Calibration company Datacolor has updated the Spyder5 software package that accompanies its Spyder5 monitor calibration devices for Pro and Elite customers. The update sees the packages renamed Spyder5Pro+ and SpyderElite+ to indicate that both now feature automatic ambient light switching and what the company calls 1-Click Calibration. The ambient light feature relies on the Spyder5 calibration device recognising that the lighting conditions in the monitor room have altered to trigger a different monitor profile. In previous versions users had to remember to make the adjustment manually.

The new 1-Click Calibration system is really a 1-click solution for monitors that have already been calibrated by the device before, and allows the re-calibration with a single click without having to go into the menu system. Both versions of the software also provide more in-depth control of saved profiles through an extra profile management tool.

The Elite package additionally offers a better soft-proofing workflow as well as Enhanced StudioMatch which helps users to calibrate multiple monitors so they all look the same.

Major firmware updates coming for Fujifilm X-T2 and X-Pro2

Fujifilm will launch a couple of major firmware updates for its X-T2 and X-Pro2 cameras. The first one, available at the end of this month, brings the X-T2 up to version 2.00 and the X-Pro2 up to 3.00. Another update will arrive in late May.

The first update brings no less than 27 feature improvements to Fuji’s flagship mirrorless cameras, including an option to enable focal length-dependent minimum shutter speed in ISO Auto, up to 15 minute exposures in T mode, more options for bracketing while shooting Raw and added autofocus flexibility.

Several other updates are aimed at improving handling during video shooting, including the addition of a live histogram for X-T2 owners.

A second round of updates will come in May. Firmware 2.10 for X-T2 and 3.10 for X-Pro2 will add -6 and -7 EVF brightness settings for very low light shooting and the ability to assign functions to the rear command dial. A few functions are added for the X-T2 only including tethered shooting via Wi-Fi. X-T2 version 2.00 & X-Pro2 version 3.00 – due late March 2017

1. Shooting RAW in Bracketing and Advanced Filters
The update enables you to use the RAW format when shooting not only in AE Bracketing but also in other Bracketing modes (ISO, Dynamic Range, White Balance, Film Simulaitons) and also in Advanced Filter modes.

2. Extended ISO 125 and 160 selectable
The update adds ISO125 and ISO160 to extended ISO levels available.

3. Programmable long exposure of up to 15 minutes
Long exposure in the T mode currently goes only up to 30 seconds. The update will allow users to extend it up to 15 minutes.

4. ON/OFF for 1/3-step shutter speed adjustment (X-T2 only – already in X-Pro2)
The update allows you to turn off the Command Dial’s function to adjust shutter speed by 1/3 steps in order to prevent unintended adjustments.

5. Full-range ISO adjustments with the Command Dial (X-T2 only)
With the update, set the ISO “A” position to “Command” to adjust ISO sensitivity across the full range, including extended ISOs, with the Front Command Dial.

6. “AUTO” setting added for the minimum shutter speed in the ISO Auto setting
The update adds an AUTO option for the minimum shutter speed in the ISO Auto setting, that allows the camera to automatically define the minimum shutter speed according to the focal length of the lens attached.

7. Faster “Face Detection AF”
The update enables the use of Phase Detection AF for faster performance in Face Detection AF.

8. Improved in-focus indication in the AF-C mode
The update reduces focus hunting in the AF-C mode, making it easier to track a subject.

9. Addition of a smaller Focus Point size in Single Point AF
The update adds a smaller Focus Point size in Single Point AF, bringing the total number of available sizes to six. The new smallest size facilitates pin-point focusing.

10. Addition of “AF Point Display” (X-Pro2 only – already on X-T2)
With the update, you can choose to have AF Points constantly displayed in Zone AF and Wide / Tracking AF, making it easier to track a subject.

11. Addition of “AF-C Custom Setting” (X-Pro2 only – already on X-T2)
The update adds “AF-C Custom Setting” for specifying focus-tracking characteristics. Choose from five presets according to your subject’s type of movements.

12. Addition of “Portrait / Landscape AF Mode Switching” (X-T2 only)
The update allows you to specify separate AF mode and AF point settings for portrait orientation and landscape orientation.

13. Change of focus frame position while enlarging it
The update allows you to move the position of focus frame while enlarging it in Single Point in the AF-S mode or in the Manual Focus

14. Activation of the Eye Sensor in video recording (X-T2 only)
The update allows you to use the Eye Sensor during video recording to automatically switch between EVF and LCD.

15. Change of ISO sensitivity during video recording (X-T2 only)
The update allows you to change ISO setting during video recording.

16. Re-autofocusing in video recording
With the update, half-press the Shutter Release button or press the button assigned to “AF-ON” function during video recording to re-do autofocusing.

17. Display live histogram during video recording (X-T2 only)
The update allows you to display a live histogram during video recording.

18. Optimization of external microphone’s input level (X-T2 only)
The update optimizes external microphone’s input level (lower limit revised from -12dB to 20dB) to reduce white noise when an external microphone with preamp is connected.

19. Addition of “Eye Sensor + LCD Image Display” in the View Mode
The update gives the “Eye Sensor + LCD Image Display” option in the View Mode that allows you to shoot through the viewfinder and check images on the LCD, just as you would with an SLR.

20. Shorter EVF display time-lag (X-Pro2 only – already in X-T2)
The update shortens EVF’s display time-lag in the AF-C mode so that you will not miss a photo opportunity.

21. Constant “Dual” mode display (X-T2 only)
With the update, the small window in the Dual mode stays on even when you half-press the shutter release button.

22. Automatic vertical GUI for LCD (X-T2 only)
With the update, when you hold the camera in the portrait orientation, the camera will automatically display the GUI on the LCD in the same orientation.

23. Name Custom Settings
The update allows you to assign a specific name to Custom Settings 1 – 7.

24. Copyright information in EXIF data
The update allows you to register the photographer’s name and the copyright holder’s name in advance so that the camera automatically adds the information to EXIF data for each image.

25. Voice Memo function
The update enable you to record 30-second “Voice Memo” clips in the Playback mode.

26. Extended AE Bracketing
The update extends AE Bracketing from the current 3 frames +/-2EV to up to 9 frames +/-3EV.

27. Addition of “Shoot Without Card” mode
With the update, you can have the “Shoot Without Card” mode turned OFF so that the camera can not shoot when there is no SD card inserted.

X-T2 version 2.10 & X-Pro2 version 3.10 – late May 2017

28. Support for computer tethering via Wi-Fi (X-T2 only)
The update adds support for computer tethering via Wi-Fi.

29. Addition of “All” AF mode (X-T2 only)
With the update, select “All” in the AF mode so that you can select the AF mode and Focus Area size by only using the Command Dial.

30. Function extension for “Shutter AF” and “Shutter AE” (X-T2 only)
With the update, you can specify different settings for AF-S and AF-C in “Shutter AF” and for AF-S / MF and AF-C in “Shutter AE.”

31. Addition of “-6” and “-7” to EVF’s brightness setting
Additional options of “-6” and “-7” to the “EVF Brightness” setting so that, even in an extremely low-light condition, the brightness of the EVF does not distract you from shooting.

32. Switchover of the main and sub displays in the Dual Display mode (X-T2 only)
The update allows you to switch between the main and sub displays in the Dual Display mode.

33. Function assignment to the Rear Command Dial
With the update, you can assign a specific function to be activated when the Rear Command Dial is pressed.

Nikon D3400 and D5600 firmware updates now available

Nikon has released firmware updates for the Nikon D3400 and the Nikon D5600, both of which have received a very small improvement that addresses the same bug: “Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.

The Nikon D3400 firmware is updated to version 1.11 and is available here; the Nikon D5600 firmware is updated to version 1.01 and is available here.

Fujifilm updates X-mount lens roadmap

Fujifilm’s creation of cine lenses and a medium-format system doesn’t mean it’s forgotten its stills-shooting X-mount audience. The company has announced an updated lens roadmap, adding an ultra-wide zoom and a telephoto prime lens, both due in 2018.

The updated roadmap positions the ‘Ultra Wide Angle Zoom’ fractionally to the left of the existing 10-24mm F4 R OIS (15-36mm equiv), suggesting it’s likely to cover a similar range but presumably with a different aperture value. Meanwhile, the ‘Telephoto Prime’ lens seems pinned around the 200mm (300 equiv) point.

The X-mount versions of the MK cine zooms are also added to the roadmap, joining the 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro as being expected in 2017.

Tamron has announced updates to two of its zoom lenses. The full-frame Tamron SP 70-200mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2 improves on its predecessor with faster autofocus and better stabilization. Tamron claims its boosted Vibration Correction provides 5 stops of stabilization. The lens is moisture and dust-resistant, and has received a thorough overhaul of optical and mechanical designs. The new optical design consists of 23 elements in 17 groups, and includes extra low dispersion and low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations. Tamron claims the inclusion of two microcomputers and a new AF algorithm has improved focus speed and accuracy. Minimum focus distance is also improved, reduced to 37.4in from the previous model’s 50.7in. The 70-200 also supports Tamron’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters/

Meanwhile, the Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD adds stabilization and refined optics to the company’s wide-angle zoom for APS-C introduced in 2008. It features LD, XLD, aspherical and hybrid aspherical elements, as well as a Broad-Band Anti-Reflection coating. Tamron was able to add Vibration Correction without increasing the size of the lens, and the company claims up to 4 stops of shake reduction. It also uses a new HLD (high/low torque-modulated drive) motor that allow for smooth control over the lens’ heavy elements. The lens is sealed against moisture and has a fluorine coating to keep oil and water off of the front elements.

Both of the new lenses use electromagnetic diaphragm control on Nikon mounts.

The Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2 is expected to arrive in March for $ 1299. The Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD is slated for availability this spring for $ 499.

February 6, 2017, Commack, NY – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025), a new telephoto zoom lens product for full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras. Model A025 was developed by substantially enhancing the features of its predecessor.

These include a thorough review of the optical, mechanical and electronic designs to increase autofocus speed and precision, reinforce VC (Vibration Compensation) functions and to shorten the MOD. New features include eBAND Coating, Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction, Fluorine Coating and compatibility with teleconverters. The lens design features a metal-based barrel for improved handling and ease-of-use. The result of this dramatic evolution is Model A025, a high-speed telephoto lens that widens the scope of expression for photography in a broad range of genres, such as portraits, landscapes, sports and photojournalism. The lens is expected to be available in the U.S. in March at $ 1299.

  1. Outstanding resolution and contrast reproduction performance, beautiful bokeh and full compatibility with Tamron teleconverters

Based on the current model (A009), the optical design has been revised and improved. Both the resolution and contrast reproduction performance far exceed the present levels. Bokeh has been enhanced and expanded to deliver outstanding background effects across the entire zoom range. Use of a circular diaphragm with nine blades further improves bokeh. The optical design of the new A025 consists of 23 elements in 17 groups. Optimum deployment of XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements thoroughly eliminate chromatic aberrations, which tend to become particularly prominent in high-speed telephoto lenses, across the entire zoom range, while ensuring uniform, high-level image quality even on the periphery of the image plane.

The new lens is also fully compatible with the TELECONVERTER 1.4x (Model TC-X14) and TELECONVERTER 2.0x (Model TC-X20)1, which increase the focal length of the lens to 1.4 times and 2 times the original, respectively. Both teleconverters are carefully designed and constructed to provide outstanding high quality.

  1. Improved VC system provides highest Vibration Compensation ability in its class3 (5 stops using CIPA standard compliant) and offers three situation-specific VC modes

Utilizing Tamron’s original VC (Vibration Compensation) system, which uses a moving coil mechanism, further reinforcement of the drive system power and control performance has now achieved the highest VC level in its class, with an image stabilization performance of 5 stops according to the CIPA standard (using VC Mode 3). 

Also, the VC system of Model A025 offers three VC modes, including one mode exclusively for panning. Photographers can freely choose between the different VC modes according to their shooting conditions. Even when telephoto shooting in low light, which tends to be severely affected by camera shake, photographers can now enjoy jitter-free handheld shooting with much greater flexibility. 

  • VC MODE 1 is the standard mode that strikes a great balance between the stability of the viewfinder image and the stabilization effects.
  • VC MODE 2 is exclusively used for panning.
  • VC MODE 3 prioritizes the stabilization of the captured images and forgoes the stabilization of the viewfinder image.

With the optional accessory TAMRON TAP-in ConsoleTM, you can customize the configuration of VC MODE 1. Choose the viewfinder view of either standard or image priority.

  1. Demonstratively improved autofocus speed and responsiveness

Model A025 is equipped with a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ring-type ultrasonic motor, whose outstanding responsiveness and control ensures accurate high-speed focusing. Incorporating two advanced, high-performance microcomputers and optimizing the algorithm has improved both the focusing speed and accuracy compared with SP 70-200mm (Model A009). Additionally, thanks to the Full-time Manual Focus override mechanism, photographers shooting with AF can instantaneously make fine focusing adjustments using MF without wasting time by switching the AF-MF mode back and forth.

  1. Focuses closer (shorter Minimum Object Distance, or MOD) for greater versatility

Improvements made to the focus cam and zoom cam inside the lens barrel have reduced the MOD from 50.7 inches in the older Model A009 to 37.4 inches for Model A025, which has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.1. The shorter MOD, coupled with the excellent optical performance of the SP 70-200mm (Model A025), allows photographers to further broaden their range of expression.

  1. Optimized and exclusively designed eBAND Coating

The new A025 features Tamron’s original eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating, a technology that combines a nano-structured layer with an extremely low refractive index with the conventional multiple-layer coatings. Optimized and exclusively designed for this new zoom, the eBAND Coating provides superior anti-reflection performance, effectively reducing any flare and ghosting. Even when taking backlit portraits, the new lens delivers flawless, crystal clear images. 

  1. Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction

Ideal for use in outdoor photography, the new 70-200mm telephoto zoom has moisture-resistant construction because special sealants that are dust-resistant and moisture-resistant are used at every joint and seam. The sealant material helps to prevent the intrusion of any dirt, dust or water droplets, compared to conventional Moisture-Resistant Construction. 

  1. Fluorine Coating for greater protection

The front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellant. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture and fingerprints.

February 6, 2017, Commack, NY – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD (Model B023), a new ultra-wideangle zoom lens for APS-C DSLR cameras. The lens is expected to be available in the U.S. this Spring at $ 499.

Model B023 is a wideangle zoom lens that covers an exceptionally large range—the largest focal length range in its class1 (35mm equivalent is 16mm to 37mm). The lens is ideal for street photography, landscapes, group photos and casual everyday scenes. In 2008, Tamron launched the SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] (Model B001) that provided an unprecedented focal length range in its class. Building on that lens’s popularity, the successor Model B023 has improved optical performance and new features. It embodies Tamron’s most advanced technologies, including the VC (Vibration Compensation) system, Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating, and the first implementation of Tamron’s new HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive). Additionally, the Model B023 has a refreshing new design derived from the design of the new product lineup in the SP series.

  1. Inheriting the broadest focal length range in its class of ultra-wideangle zoom lenses

The new Model B023 achieves a broad focal length range of 10-24mm, the largest range among ultra-wideangle zoom lenses for APS-C DSLR cameras. This is the 35mm equivalent of covering a very wideangle of view, from 16mm ultra-wideangle to 37mm semi-wideangle. A photographer can enjoy diverse wideangle expressions with just this one lens, from dynamic landscapes far beyond the normal human field of vision to simple, casual snapshots. 

  1. Improved optical performance across the entire zoom range

The optical design of the new Model B023 consists of 16 lens elements in 11 groups. Special lens elements are utilized in an optimum configuration of one LD (Low Dispersion) lens element, one XLD glass element, one molded glass aspherical element, and one hybrid aspherical lens. While curbing an increase in the size of the optical system, the new lens very effectively compensates for a wide variety of aberrations in the entire zoom range, including transverse chromatic aberration, comatic aberration and distortions that tend to become more prominent with a wideangle lens.

Tamron’s highly regarded BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating and the optical design paying close attention to internal reflections in the lens barrel also curb the effects of harmful light rays that tend to occur with a wideangle lens, achieving excellent resistance against ghosting and flare seen in backlighting situations.

  1. 4-Stop Vibration Compensation that is especially useful in low light conditions

In response to the requests of many customers who have asked the company to equip a wideangle lens with image stabilization, we have now installed Tamron’s acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation) on the new Model B023. Optimizing the actuator and the control algorithm has made it possible to incorporate the VC, while maintaining the compact design of the previous Model B001. The VC especially enhances the photographer’s freedom in handheld shooting at dusk or in a dimly lit room, and under other relatively low light conditions, as the mechanism proves particularly effective in the shooting conditions with slower shutter speeds.

  1. Equipped for the first time with the new HLD with outstanding driving power and stability

Tamron’s new HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) has been developed for use as the AF drive system for Model B023. With its outstanding driving power and stability, the HLD is capable of smoothly controlling the AF mechanism of the new Model B023 that is actually equipped with large focusing lens elements. When shooting in AF mode, the Full-time Manual Focus override allows you to instantly make fine focusing adjustments manually, without having to switch between modes.

  1. Compressed into a compact body with structural ingenuity

While enhancing image quality, adding new functions and substantially improving the basic performance, Model B023’s space-saving design has ensured an optimum configuration for components such as the VC and AF unit, thus successfully reducing overall length compared to the previous Model B001. Adobe Lightroom CC and iOS updates add Reference View and new edit interface

Adobe has announced updates to Lightroom CC 2015.8, Lightroom Mobile for iOS 2.6 and Adobe Camera Raw. The Adobe Lightroom CC update brings a new Reference View for comparing a pair of different images to each other, as well as zoom to fill, zoom to fit and performance improvements. This is joined by the Camera Raw update, which adds support for new cameras and lens profiles, as well as bug fixes.

The Lightroom for iOS update is the most extensive of the three, bringing with it a new edit interface that aims to make it easier and faster to find tools and use them to edit images via an iPhone. The new edit interface is complemented by a new info section with options for adding copyright data, captions and titles while on mobile. Additionally, the iOS app has a new capture interface that Adobe describes as similar to the interface in the Android app, and it gives users access to a new ‘Professional Mode’ with better control over the iPhone camera’s features.

Google updates Earth Timelapse with petabytes of new data

Google has updated its interactive Earth Timelapse feature with better imagery and several years of new data. The massive update added petabytes of new data and brings it up to the current year. 

Detailing the update in a blog post, Google says updated images are sharper ‘with truer colors and fewer distracting artifacts.’ Earth Timelapse was introduced in 2013 and includes images recorded as early as 1984.

Basically, Google’s Earth Timelapse presents users with 33 interactive images of the entire planet, but creating those images was a feat – Google says it sifted through 3 quadrillion pixels to maximize image quality. The final product represents 25,000,000 overlapping global image tiles that users can zoom in, zoom out, play and replay to their heart’s content.
