Canon plans to add 24p recording to select EOS, PowerShot cameras via firmware update

The people have spoken and Canon has listened. In an email sent to DPReview Canon says it ‘plans to introduce 24p mode (23.98fps) for movie recording via a series of future firmware updates for select [EOS and PowerShot] models.’

According to the email, the move comes ’In response to feedback from our customers about some of our recently launched EOS and PowerShot models.’ Canon specifically says the first models to receive the firmware update with support for 24p (23.98 fps) shooting modes will be the EOS 90D and the EOS RP at the end of October. ‘The PowerShot G7X Mark III and G5X Mark II will follow at the end of 2019 and the EOS M6 Mark II during the first half of 2020,’ reads the email.

Once the firmware is released for the cameras, each supported model will be able to shoot 24p (23.98 fps) in 4K and Full HD.

Pixelmator Photo gets major v1.1 update with iPadOS 13 support and more

Photo editing app Pixelmator Photo has received a major update to version 1.1, gaining support for Apple’s newly released iPadOS 13, including its redesigned Files app. As well, the updated app brings ‘deeper integration’ with Apple’s iCloud Photos service, batch photo editing that is ‘enhanced’ via machine learning, and the ability to resize exported images.

Pixelmator Photo is a version of the Pixelmator desktop software designed specifically for the iPad. Apple released iPadOS 13 earlier this month for its tablets, bringing a version of iOS tailored specifically for the iPad, including an improved Files app.

The Pixelmator Photo 1.1 update adds support for both iPadOS 13 and that new Files app, enabling users to edit images stored on external devices, including USB drives and SD cards, as well as remote online services including file servers.

Joining that new capability is ML-enhanced batch photo editing, offering users access to machine learning algorithms trained on what the company says were millions of professional images. Pixelmator includes its own batch editing workflows with Pixelmator Photo 1.1, though users can also create their own with actions like cropping and straightening, as well as custom color adjustment presets.

Going forward, Pixelmator Photo will now automatically manage photo edits and save the changes to the user’s library thanks to the updated iCloud Photos integration. Users no longer have to create duplicates or manually import images, plus it is now possible to revert images, favorite them, and delete them in the Photos library without exiting Pixelmator Photo.

Pixelmator Photo is available to purchase for iPad from the Apple App Store for $ 4.99 USD.

Sony a9 firmware update adds Animal Eye AF, interval shooting and more

Sony has officially released the latest firmware for its a9 full-frame mirrorless camera, bringing with it Real-Time Eye AF for animals, interval shooting and more.

Firmware version 6.00 makes good on Sony’s promise to bring Real-Time Eye AF for animals to its flagship mirrorless camera. As detailed previously when Sony launched Animal Eye AF on its a7R III and a7 III, the new mode will be available to select alongside Human Eye AF in the autofocus menu.

Only one of the modes can be selected at once and the Animal Eye AF will be slightly slower than Human Eye AF due to the increased processing power required, but the a9 shouldn’t have any problem keeping up. Sony has a detailed documentation page to read up on all of the intricacies of the Animal Eye AF mode.

The firmware update also includes built-in Interval Shooting, a feature we previously detailed with the a7R III and a7 III update:

Now, it’s easy to capture between 1 and 9999 photographs in 1 to 60 second intervals. The new feature also includes an auto exposure (AE) sensitivity setting that can be adjusted between High, Mid or Low to account for changing exposures throughout the set capture time. The resulting images can also be put together into a full video using Sony’s Imaging Edge app, which will process the Raw photographs and output the final video to YouTube, PlayMemories Online and other online video services.

Another addition is the ability to select the Focus Frame Color so it’s easier to see it in various environments, as well as the ability to make the ‘My Menu’ appear when the menu button is pressed on the camera. Bugs have also been addressed to smooth out the overall stability of the a9.

Firmware version 6.0 for the a9 is available for free on Sony’s support page for macOS (direct download) and Windows (direct download).

Atomos shares info on S1H ProRes Raw update, to offer 16-bit Raw capture with Sony FX9

Atomos has made two announcements that will bring improved video recording capabilities to two recently-released cameras: the Panasonic Lumix S1H and the Sony FX9.

First up, Atomos has shared more information regarding a previous announcement that it was working alongside Panasonic to co-develop a means to capture Raw video for the Lumix S1H. Atomos has now provided both a timeframe (albeit a rough one) and official specifications for the impending firmware update.

Atomos says the S1H firmware update will make it possible to record 5.9K/29.97p Raw and C4K/59.94p video on the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder over HDMI. Currently, the Lumix S1H can record 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio) and 59.94p 4K/C4K, so this update will be a substantial bump in recording capabilities.

In its announcement, Panasonic also revealed that ProRes Raw would be the codec supported for Raw recording. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

Atomos has also announced that it’s Neon 8K MCU (Adorama, B&H) will support 4K 16-bit Raw recording from Sony’s recently-unveiled FX9 camera. Details are scarce, but Atomos’ press release, embedded below, implies the functionality will be available when the FX9 ships later this year in December 2019.

It seems Atomos is adamant on working alongside camera manufacturers to get the most from the sensors inside the manufacturers’ latest cameras. In January 2019, Atomos said it was working with Nikon to bring 4K Raw video capture over HDMI to its Ninja V external recorder.

We’ve since learned this update won’t be free and will require cameras to be sent into Nikon service centers to perform an ‘internal upgrade’ to the camera, but the promise still remains. According to the latest information, the 4K Raw video update is still scheduled to be released before the end of the year.

LUMIX S1H Firmware Development Underway for 5.9K/29.97p and C4K/59.94p RAW Video Data Output to Atomos Ninja V

Newark, NJ (September 13, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to announce the development of firmware for the LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera which enables the output of 5.9K/29.97p RAW and C4K/59.94p video data to the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

The LUMIX S1H is the world’s first camera to combine professional-level video quality, the high mobility of a mirrorless camera and a Full-Frame sensor. It is currently capable of video recording at 6K/24p*1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 59.94p 4K/C4K.*2 *3 The LUMIX S1H will be introduced in late September 2019.

Panasonic has a long history of collaboration with Atomos. This relationship will deliver new RAW video functionality for the S1H. 5.9K up to 29.97p and C4K*3 up to 59.94p in RAW delivered over HDMI is in development. With this firmware Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on the Atomos Ninja V.

A LUMIX S1H prototype with this firmware will be exhibited along with the Atomos Ninja V in the Panasonic booth (Booth No. C45, Hall 11) at the IBC2019 (International Broadcasting Convention) to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13-17, 2019.

Atomos Announce 16bit RAW Support on New FX9 From Sony

RawTherapee 5.7 update brings new Film Negative tool, improved star ratings

Free, Raw image developing app RawTherapee has been updated to version 5.7, gaining a Film Negative tool for processing raw images from film negatives, as well as support for viewing XMP/EXIF rating tags in RawTherapee’s own star rating system. New features aside, RawTherappe 5.7 also brings hundreds of bug fixes, according to the software’s changelog.

RawTherapee is free and open-source for users on Windows, macOS and Linux. The software is non-destructive, offering a variety of advanced editing tools for adjusting lighting, colors and details, including Film Simulation, Haze Removal, Color Toning, Defringe and more.

Tamron firmware update adds support for Nikon’s FTZ adapter to three of its lenses

Tamron has released firmware updates for three of its F mount lenses to add support for Nikon’s FTZ adapter.

Back in November 2018, Tamron announced firmware updates (1, 2) for half a dozen lenses that added support for Nikon’s F to Z mount adapter. Now, three additional lenses gain support: the Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016), 70-210mm F/4 Di VC USD (Model A034) and 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035).

No additional changes are mentioned in the firmware update, but regardless of whether or not you have a Nikon Z6 or Z7 camera, it’s probably in your best interest to download and install the firmware updates via Tamron’s TAP-in Utility, which works with the Tamron TAP-in console to update compatible Tamron lenses.

ON1 announces upcoming Photo RAW 2020 update, two mobile apps and ON1 Sync

ON1 has announced the impending release of ON1 Photo RAW 2020 as well as three new products: ON1 Video, ON1 Photo Mobile and ON1 Sync Service. ON1 says in its press release that ‘in the coming months’ it will launch a ‘complete line of photo and video products to all levels of photographers providing an integrated creative workflow.’

ON1 Photo RAW 2020

The first product to arrive is ON1 Photo RAW 2020, a successor to ONE1 Photo RAW 2019 that brings with it new AI-powered features and more. Specifically, ON1 says Photo RAW 2020 will feature ‘AI Match and AI Auto, four filters in Effects (Weather, Sun Flare, Color Balance, Channel Mixer), Custom Camera Profiles with X-Rite, SmugMug integration, improved noise reduction, a map view, a Print Module, and significant speed/performance enhancements.’

Additionally, ON1 Photo RAW 2020 will be available in eleven languages for the first time, including English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch.

ON1 says it plans to release a public beta for Photo RAW 2020 in ‘mid-September’ 2019. ON1 Photo RAW 2020 is available to pre-order as the full version for $ 99.99 and an upgrade for Photo Raw 2019 users for $ 79.99.

ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 App

ON1 has also announced it will soon release ON1 Photo Mobile 2020, an Android and iOS app that will allow you to both capture and edit Raw photos on your mobile device. According to ON1, the app ‘will allow you to capture raw photos on your smartphone using the pro-level controls you are familiar with on your interchangeable-lens camera.’ In addition to capture, it will provide basic editing tools to adjust the captured images.

ON1 Sync

Alongside the ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 app, ON1 has announced ON1 Sync, an optional service that makes it possible to ‘view and edit photos on all your devices without requiring you to store them in the cloud or a closed system.’

The optional add-on for ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 will sync albums, presets and more between devices. ON1 doesn’t elaborate on how exactly it’ll work, but says ‘You can store your photos on your desktop or laptop computer, an external hard drive, in any of the popular cloud services or on your mobile devices, and you can still access them from anywhere.’

ON1 also emphasizes its priority on privacy, saying using the ON1 Sync service won’t grant ON1 any additional rights to the content, nor will the company ‘have permission to use your photos for image analysis or any sort of marketing purposes.’

ON1 Video 2020

Last but not least, ON1 has announced ON1 Video 2020, a new video editing application that it says was ‘explicitly designed for the photographer.’ ON1 says it ‘will be a simple, yet robust video editor’ with tools for enhancing, tripping, editing audio, grading and sharing videos. ON1 says ON1 Video 2020 will work seamlessly with ON1 Photo RAW 2020.

A public beta for ON1 Video 2020 is expected mid-November with a final release timeframe of ‘early 2020.’

Nikon SnapBridge 2.6 update brings Raw image transfer support to Android, iOS

Nikon has released SnapBridge version 2.6, finally adding support for Raw (NEF/NRW) image transfers when shooting with Nikon’s WiFi-enabled camera models. The addition finally enables users to wirelessly transfer Raw images from a camera to a smartphone or tablet, something users have been seeking for years.

In addition to Raw transfer support, SnapBridge 2.6 has added a number of smaller changes, including faster transfer of 2MP images, DSLR camera control for settings like shutter speed and aperture, simplified and faster pairing, an updated app design, a power-saving mode and location data with user-selectable accuracy.

SnapBridge 2.6 is available now on both Android and iOS. Nikon has shared videos detailing how to set up SnapBridge with both Android and iOS on its website.

Adobe’s August update adds ‘GPU Accelerate Editing’ to Lightroom Classic, Camera Raw

After accidentally publishing the announcement yesterday, today Adobe has officially released its August Photography update for Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Camera Raw, bringing with it a number of improvements including GPU Accelerated Editing.

As explained in a post on the Adobe Blog, GPU Accelerated Editing allows ‘Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw take advantage of the more powerful graphics cards (GPUs) while editing, providing a smoother and more responsive experience.’ Specifically, Adobe says the acceleration will ‘more pronounced with larger resolution monitors (4k and above) as well as with more powerful GPUs.’

This update won’t fix all of the complaints lobbed at Lightroom Classic CC, but it does address one of the program’s biggest issues—speed.

We took the update for a quick spin on a 2016 Retina MacBook Pro with a Radeon Pro 455 2GB and Intel HD Graphics 530 GPUs and although it’s difficult to quantify the exact improvement, we immediately noticed adjustments made to Raw photos captured on a Canon EOS R were applied much faster than the previous version of Lightroom Classic CC. From small, incremental adjustments to large two-stop exposure adjustments, the image immediately adapted to the new settings—something not always possible before unless you were using Smart Previews to make edits.

Aside from the GPU Accelerated Editing, both Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic CC have gained PNG export support. Lightroom Classic CC has also received updates to the Library Module for improved navigation through folders, Color Labels for Collections and batch processing for HDR and panorama merges.

Lightroom, Adobe’s cloud-centric photography ecosystem, has also gained a few new features in the August update, including the ability to recover deleted photos, improved search options, updated preset options and batch metadata edits. Some of these changes apply only to specific versions of Lightroom, so check out Adobe’s announcement post for full details.

The August Photography update should be available through the Creative Cloud application. Additional details on ‘What’s New’ have been detailed by Adobe for Lightroom Classic, Camera Raw, Lightroom for Mac and Windows, Lightroom for iOS and Lightroom for Android.
