Sony a9 ‘real-time tracking’ update makes it the highest scoring camera in its class

We were already impressed with the Sony a9 when we reviewed it, giving it a score that put it on par with its two very capable rivals, the Nikon D5 and the Canon EOS-1DX II. In April this year, nearly two years after the camera’s launch, Sony introduced a significant firmware update that largely revamped the autofocus system of the camera, adding a new ‘real-time tracking’ AF mode that works seamlessly with face and eye detection. Sony also updated face and eye detection algorithms by using machine learning to understand human subjects and features more accurately.

We’ve spent some time shooting with the updated a9 in a variety of situations, and have previously written and in-depth look into what the new AF system brings. After further testing, we’ve re-scored the a9 with the boosted autofocus in mind, and it brings the score up to 90% (from 89%). This makes the a9 the highest-scoring camera in its class, out-ranking the Nikon D5 and Canon EOS-1D X II.

The increased score reflects the precision of the updated a9’s subject tracking system, as well as its ease-of-use that makes it valuable for nearly all types of photography. Real-time tracking in use

‘Real-time tracking’ refers to the ability of the a9 (and a6400) to understand the subject you initiated focus on, and track it in three dimensions, much like 3D Tracking on Nikon DSLRs, and the respective subject tracking modes on various mirrorless cameras. What sets the a9’s system apart are both its performance (we found it to reliable enough to be useful for portrait, event, candid, sports and even landscape photography), and its ease-of-use.

To pick a target, you can simply reframe your composition to place your AF point over your subject, half-press the shutter, and real-time tracking will collect color, brightness, pattern, distance, face and eye information about your subject so it can use it to keep track of your subject.

It’s robust enough that it will even, again reliably, switch in and out of Eye AF as necessary if a face or eye is detected on the subject you are tracking, as you can see in the video above.* Collectively, this means you can concentrate on the composition and the moment. There is no longer a need to focus (pun intended) on keeping your AF point over your subject, which for years has constrained composition and made it difficult to maintain focus on erratic subjects.

In practice, the system excels. While many professional sports photographers that know their sport, and can anticipate the action, have successfully used Single Point or Zone AF for years, real-time tracking can help both the amateur and the pro achieve potentially better results. First, it frees up the photographer to compose freely, as composition is no longer constrained by having to keep an AF point over the subject. But perhaps more importantly, not having to keep a fixed AF point or zone over a fast moving subject is a boon when it comes to fast, erratic subjects shot using long telephoto lenses, where framing is increasingly difficult. The sequences below were shot with the 600mm F4 GM lens at a soccer match (click on any thumbnail to launch the gallery):

And below, despite erratic motion, changing directions, and nearby similarly-dressed players, the camera tracks the original player in both instances. In the first sequence we targeted the player in red (Everton); in the second, the player in silver (Ivan). Only one or two shots in the sequence are slightly misfocused.

Away from sports and burst photography, we found the performance of Sony’s ‘real-time tracking’ to be beneficial for even more stationary subjects, as it frees you up to try different poses and framings quickly, as we’ve done below.

Most of the 20 shots above were captured in under 19 seconds, without ever letting off the AF-ON button. The camera never lost our model, and the seamless transitioning between Eye AF and general subject tracking allowed the AF system to remain on our subject throughout the series. By not having to think about focus, you can work faster, and come home with a greater variety of images to choose from.

Firmware update for Panasonic S1/S1R improves image stabilization and AF performance

Panasonic is releasing a firmware update for its Lumix DC-S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras, which will be available on July 9th. The new firmware (version 1.1) addresses the following:

Improved image stabilization performance: Panasonic claims that with firmware v1.1, the in-body IS system will reduce shake by an additional 1/2-stop, for a total of 6 stops with non-stabilized lenses and 6.5 stops with Dual IS-compatible glass.

Improved AF performance: Panasonic claims that tracking performance live view display will be improved, and new AF-on options have been added.

  • Tracking performance during video recording has been improved
  • Live view display during autofocusing is now ‘easier to see’
  • A new AF-ON: Near Shift biases toward close subjects, while Far Shift does the opposite

Two smaller changes: An ‘activate’ option has been added to the S1, for entering the key for the optional DMW-SFU2 video feature update. ‘Operational stability’ when using XQD cards should also be improved on both the S1 and S1R.

The firmware will be available for download on Panasonic’s website on the 9th.


On the same day, firmware updates will be made available for six Micro Four Thirds cameras: the Lumix GH5, GH5S, G9, G90/G91/G95, G80/G81/G85 and GX9.

The new firmware addresses various things across those cameras, but the one thing they have in common is adding support for smooth aperture control during video capture when using the Panasonic Leica 10-25mm F1.7 lens. Users can also toggle the aperture ring between ‘smooth’ and 1/3EV. The minor camera-specific changes can be found in the press release below.

Newark, NJ (July 1, 2019) – Panasonic has announced that the company will release the firmware update programs for the LUMIX Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras to enhance the functions and usability. LUMIX S1R Firmware Version 1.1

1. Improved performance of the Body Image Stabilizer

  • The correction performance of the Body Image Stabilizer has been improved from a maximum of 5.5 stops to a maximum of 6.0 stops.*1
  • The correction performance of the Dual I.S.2 has been improved from 6.0 stops to 6.5 stops.*2

Loupedeck+ 2.7.0 update brings with it Adobe Camera Raw integration

Loupedeck has announced its latest editing console, Loupedeck+, now includes integration with Adobe Camera Raw, adding yet another program to its list of supported post-production applications.

The version 2.7.0 update, implemented via the Loupedeck desktop app, adds the ability to control the various editing tools within the Adobe Camera Raw workspace. Considering the Adobe Camera Raw workspace is at the core of Adobe Lightroom Classic, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the various editing tools and adjustments are nearly identical on the Loupedeck+ console between the two programs.

As with the Lightroom Classic integration, the Loupedeck+ console offers Adobe Camera Raw users the ability to crop, make basic adjustments, color correct, add various details and more. If the default layout doesn’t fit your workflow, the Loupedeck app makes it easy to customize what the various dials and settings. Below is a video Loupedeck has posted to its YouTube channel that takes a look at the Adobe Camera Raw support with photographer and filmmaker Adam Karnacz.

The Adobe Camera Raw integration brings the total number of supported editing apps to eight. Loupedeck already supports Adobe Lightroom Classic CC, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe After Effects CC, Adobe Audition and Skylum’s Aurora HDR.

The 2.7.0 update is available on Loupdeck’s website for both macOS and Windows computers. If you already have the software installed, you can manually update the application from its settings menu.

Sony adds Animal Eye AF to the a6400 with new 2.00 firmware update

Sony has released firmware version 2.00 for its a6400 mirrorless camera, bringing with it Animal Eye AF, support for the RMT-P1BT wireless remote commander and other improvements to help with stability.

It’s been roughly two months since Sony launched firmware updates for its a7R III and a7 III, which brought with them, amongst other things, Sony’s new Animal Eye AF. Now, Sony has brought the system to its crop sensor mirrorless cameras.

As a refresher, Animal Eye AF is an autofocus mode that uses AI-trained algorithms to find and focus on the eyes of wild animals and pets. It works with AF-C focus mode and is activated when the shutter is half-pressed or when assigned to the AF-ON button.

As with the firmware updates for the a7R III and a7 III, Animal Eye AF can’t be used at the same time as Human Eye AF and, due to the extra processing power required to get the job done, it won’t be nearly as fast as the Human Eye AF. Sony has put together a full documentation page detailing the intricacies of Animal Eye AF.

Firmware version 2.00 has also added support for Sony’s RMT-P1BT wireless remote commander and a number of other bug fixes that improve the overall stability and functionality of the a6400.

Firmware version 2.00 can be downloaded from Sony UK’s website for macOS and Windows computers. Installation instructions can be found on the respective download pages.

Skylum Luminar 3.1.1 update brings speed improvements and new features

Skylum has updated its photo editing software Luminar to version 3.1.1, bringing improvements and new features to both the Windows and Mac versions of the application. The company says the new version of its software improves navigation on Windows and Mac by enabling users to right-click on an image and go straight to the folder in which it is stored.

For Windows users, right-clicking on an image also now presents the option to view other images that were taken on the same day. Skylum presents these two features as a way to easily find other content that may be related to a current project, such as other images taken during the same photo shoot.

For Mac users, Luminar version 3.1.1 can create albums faster and now supports changing the software’s language independent of the operating system’s settings. Both the Windows and Mac versions of the software have received launch time improvements, as well, drastically reducing the software’s startup time.

Luminar version 3.1.1 is available now. Windows users can find the update by clicking ‘Help > Check for update’ in the top toolbar; Mac users can update by clicking ‘Check for updates’ in the Luminar 3 menu option in the system’s top bar.

Astropad 3.2 update shows it isn’t going away anytime soon—and teases a Windows version

Astropad may have been ‘Sherlocked’ with Apple’s announcement that the ability to use an iPad as a secondary display will be baked into macOS 10.15 Catalina as a feature called Sidecar, but that hasn’t stopped Astropad from updating its third-party solution.

Yesterday, Astropad 3.2 was released with a few new updates and a note from its founders saying they have no plans to stop Astropad development, even amidst Apple’s Sidecar announcement.

Astropad 3.2 brings along your normal bug fixes and under-the-hood fixes as well as a fix to minimize pixelation. According to the update notes, the development team re-engineered the data flow from Mac devices to iPads ‘in order to push data more efficiently between devices.’ This fix should mean pixelation is ‘significantly reduced’ when your iPad is connected to a Mac device over strong Wi-Fi networks or USB. Astropad notes the changes should especially be noticeable when scrolling through text documents and websites.

On iOS, Astropad Studio 3.2, Astropad Standard 3.2 and Astropad Mini 3.2 should all be available to update in the iOS App Store if you currently have the apps on your device. The macOS app should automatically update to the latest version, but if not, Astropad has a dedicated download page where you can manually download the updated version.

As for future plans, Astropad’s founders have written up a blog post explaining that Astropad isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Under the headline ‘We’re not going anywhere,’ the note reads:

We’ve spent the last five years building innovative products like Astropad and Luna Display that cater to true creative professionals. Our team has always doubled-down on delivering rich features, deep customization, and low-latency input. Why? Because that’s user-driven and that’s what we do.

So while Apple’s Sidecar merely scratches the surface of a Mac-iPad workspace, we went all in on the bells and whistles. What does this mean for you? If you have basic needs, Apple’s Sidecar may do the trick. But if you’re a pro, we’ve built Astropad to cater to your creative workflow.

Oh, and one more thing: the message from the founders also hints that a Windows version of Astropad is in the future. ‘We see a bright future in that exciting new space and we hope you’ll join us along for the ride,’ reads the message. ‘So while we may be the underdogs, we’re ready to charge head-on because we’re just as committed to creative pros as we’ve always been — whether that’s via Mac, PC, or beyond.’

Panasonic S1 firmware update delivers advanced video features

Panasonic has announced an upcoming firmware upgrade for its Lumix DC-S1 full-frame mirrorless camera. Officially referred to as DMW-SFU2, the upgrade adds a number of high-end video features and capabilities, many of which are similar to those found in the company’s GH5 series of cameras, which have often been class-leading when it comes to video.

Most prominent is the addition of Panasonic’s V-Log gamma profile, which promises to deliver 14+ stops of dynamic range. Notably, this is not the truncated V-Log L profile found on the GH-series, which capture a bit less dynamic range due to their smaller sensors. Rather, it’s the same gamma profile used by the company’s VariCam cinema cameras, which should allow the S1 to deliver the same look as VariCam models using the same V-Gamut color space.

Additionally, the upgrade adds 4:2:2 10-bit 4K/30p internal recording, 4:2:2 10-bit 4K/60p recording using an external recorder via HDMI, and 48 kHz/24-bit or 96 kHz/24-bit audio when used with Panasonic’s DMW-XLR1 adapter.

Videographers will be excited to hear that Panasonic is also adding very useful tools like a waveform monitor and in-camera LUTs, which can be used when shooting in V-Log to approximate the look of graded output.

Who should consider this upgrade? If you’re primarily a stills-shooter, or even a video-shooter who mostly shoots casually, it’s possible that none of these new features will be important to you. However, if you’re a serious video shooter who understands the advantages of Log video, or who needs to match footage with other pro video cameras from Panasonic, this is probably an upgrade you’ll want to consider.

The DMW-SFU2 software key will be available in July at a cost of $ 199 in the US, €199 in Europe and £179 in the UK. Panasonic US says the update will be made available free to any existing S1 owners that have registered their camera, and for anyone who buys an S1 before July 31st. In Europe (including the UK) the offer runs until the end of September.

Panasonic to Release the Upgrade Firmware Key DMW-SFU2 for LUMIX S1 in July 2019 to Expand Its Video Performance

Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic has announced that the company will release an Upgrade Firmware Key DMW-SFU2 for the full-frame mirrorless camera LUMIX S1 in July 2019. This paid software program will further expand the video performance of the LUMIX S1 for advanced video recording. As announced separately, the new LUMIX S1H features 14+ stops of full V-Log, which is equivalent to the V-Log of high-end cinema cameras such as the Cinema VariCam. The user can experience the 14+ stops of V-Log on the LUMIX S1 with the firmware update program provided by the Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU2, prior to the release of the LUMIX S1H.

Functions available with the upgrade program are as follows.

  • 14+ stops of V-Log recording
  • World’s first 4:2:2 10-bit 4K MOV 30p/25p*1 internal video recording*2
  • World’s first 4:2:2 10-bit 4K 60p/50p*1 HDMI output*2
  • V-Log and V-Gamut compatible with Cinema VariCam Look
  • In-camera LUT (Look Up Table) application enabling playback of V-Log while or after recording (LUT Display with Custom Function)
  • A WFM (Waveform Monitor) displays brightness level while recording
  • High-res 48-kHz/24-bit or 96-kHz/24-bit sound can be recorded in MOV using the XLR Microphone Adaptor DMW-XLR1

The Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU2 will go on sale in July 2019.

Ricoh announces minor 1.11 firmware update for its GR III camera system

Ricoh has released firmware version 1.11 for its GR III camera. It’s not a major update, but if you own a GR III, it’s still worth your time to update it.

According to the changelog, firmware version 1.11, an upgrade from 1.10, corrects an issue where playing back a movie on the camera caused the frame rate to drop, as well as an issue where the incorrect firmware was displayed when the GR III was plugged into a macOS computer. Additionally, the update smooths out a number of under-the-hood problems for improved stability.

To update the firmware on your GR III, follow the following steps, as shared by Ricoh:

[1] Provide a formatted SD memory card for the update software. The download file is self-extracting. The following file is extracted. fwdc239b.bin: This is the updated firmware Copy the above Firmware file [fwdc239b.bin] to the root directory in the SD card.
[2] Insert the battery into the camera and confirm the battery is full by battery level indicator then turn the camera off.
[3] Insert the update SD card (prepared in step 1) into the camera and close card cover.
[4] Turn the camera power on while pressing [Menu] button.
[5] [Update the camera firmware] is displayed Select [Execute] by 4-way button and press [OK] button.
[6] The firmware update will start and [Updating] is displayed. *Do not turn OFF the camera while updating.
[7] When update is completed, “Update completed” will be displayed
[8] Turn OFF the camera and remove the SD card from camera. *Confirm the version of firmware with above [How to check version].
[Caution] When updating is finished, the update SD card still contains the Firmware file. If you want to use this card to take pictures, format the card by the camera to delete firmware file first.

Canon’s RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro is a compact, affordable prime lens for the new EOS R system. The only non – ‘L’ lens currently available for Canon’s mirrorless EOS R and RP, the 35mm F1.8 offers a versatile focal length for everyday shooting, optical stabilization and a useful semi-macro focus capability.

We’re working on a full review of the RF 35mm F1.8 right now, but in the meantime we just added several images to our previously-published sample gallery.

X-Rite’s ColorChecker Camera Calibration software gets DNG support, more in 2.0 update

X-Rite has released an update for its ColorChecker Passport software that adds a few new features to help get the most accurate colors possible in your photography workflow.

ColorChecker Camera Calibration software version 2.0 (updated from version 1.2.0) has added support for X-Rite’s Digital ColorChecker SG target and now offers the ability to produce camera profiles for both the DNG and ICC color management workflows.

The software update is available for macOS and Windows computer systems and is available to download from X-Rite’s support page.
