New York Times reportedly more than doubles photographers’ pay rate

The New York Times has more than doubled its photographers’ pay, according to a new report, increasing its day rate from $ 200 to $ 450. The report’s sources also claim that the publication’s pay rate for photographers working less than a day is now $ 300, though it isn’t clear what the previous rate was. This follows a report the company published in January stating, among other things, that it ‘need[s] to expand the number of visual experts who work at The Times and also expand the number who are in leadership roles.’

The Times discussed its ‘strategy and aspirations’ in its 2020 report published in January 2017. Chief among the details about many changes the publication needs to make is discussion of photography and its role in modern journalism. ‘Too much of our daily report remains dominated by long strings of text,’ the report explains, detailing ways it could improve articles using visual elements.

In addition to enabling reporters and others to improve their visual storytelling capabilities, The Times says, ‘We also need to become more comfortable with our photographers, videographers and graphics editors playing the primary role covering some stories, rather than a secondary role.’

Times Lapse: Minute-Long Video Shows Every NYT Cover Printed Since 1852

The times are always changing, but few things bring it home quite so elegantly (and quickly) as an extended look at the front pages of a classic publication, compressing over 150 years of history (and 60,000 pages) into a single minute.

Data artist Josh Begley takes viewers on a whirlwind tour of New York Times cover images. His time(s)-lapse video spans from early days when they were entirely text to the advent of black-and-white then color images.

While so much has changed, detailed maps and wood engravings appearing to liven up the pages as the years pass in seconds, much remains the same.

The effects captured reflect both continuity and evolution, encapsulating not only a publication-specific shift but also the broader history of modern print publishing.

Meanwhile, for fans of history, typography and the Times (via Colossal): “Typesetter Carl Schlesinger and filmmaker David Loeb Weiss documented the last day of hot metal typesetting” in the film above. “This amazing behind-the-scenes view not only captures the laborious effort to create a single page of printed type, but also the the emotions and thoughts of several New York Times employees as they candidly discuss their feelings about transitioning to a new technology. One man decides he’s not ready for the digital age and plans to retire on the spot after 49 years, while others seem to transition smoothly into the new methods of production.”

Mesmerizing video shows every New York Times front page since 1852

Looking for a history lesson that’s less than a minute long? A video from self-described data artist Josh Begley is just that. It shows every New York Times front page, starting with 1852 and ending in present day. It’s a mesmerizing visual, but it’s also acts a timeline of the adoption of photography. Photos begin appearing more frequently around the halfway point in the video, and the transition to color photography happens around the 48 second mark.

The New York Times published its first issue on September 18, 1851. The first photos published by the paper appeared in a Sunday magazine in 1896. May 29, 1910 marks the first front page photographed published by the Times, an image of a daredevil flight from Albany to New York sponsored by the paper. The first color photograph appeared on the front page in 1997.

Cash prizes and Sony gear are on the line as deadlines for entry to the Sony World Photography Awards are approaching. The project named after social theory Panopticon, originally developed by French philosopher Michel Foucault in his book Discipline and Punish. The ìPanopticonî refers to an experimental laboratory of power in which behaviour could be modified, and Foucault viewed the Panopticon as a symbol of the repressive, disciplinary society of surveillance. I made photographs of the prison San Vittore in Milan, Italy. To show the boundary that is standing between those ones outside the prison, and those once inside the prison. That those outside the prison can’t actually see what is going on behind the walls of the prison.

I was laying on the bank of Kerkini Lake, Macedonia, Greece on 27 January 2016. This lake is known as the most important wintering habitat of the Dalmatian pelican in Europe. At this time of the year the Dalmatian pelicans are in their breeding plumage. It was in the mid-morning. A group of five Dalmatian pelicans came closer and closer, probably looking for some fish from the fisherman on shore. They stopped for a short time in a lined row staring at my camera, like posing for a family shot. It was very exciting and I took the shot.

After I heard that it is “one of the most crowded places in the world,” I decided to visit the beach in Qingdao, China. But Qingdao in May was chilly and foggyóit was still off-season. I could sense that this place had at one point been full of exuberant people, and in the subsequent emptiness, I felt a sense of loss.

This photo is the scene of wedding photo sessions around the sea. Although It was very bad weather, maybe they had to do that because of the full reservations of the popular spot in China.

Wolf Snappers feeding on plankton. German Channel, Ngemelis Island, Republic of Palau. Taken in miso soup visibility but one of my favorite shots from the trip. I took this while the three Mantas we were shooting were making their huge U-turn for another pass at the cloud of plankton. This was at around 3 meters and the energy was electric all around.

Canon 600EX II-RT boosts recycle times for top-of-the-line Speedlite

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT updates the manufacturer’s top-shelf flash unit with faster recycle times. The unit still offers wireless shooting via radio and optical transmission, but improves flash recycle times by 1.1 to 1.5x when using AA batteries and up to 2x with a new CP-E4N add-on battery pack.

The flash provides a 197ft/60m guide number, consistent with its predecessor, and the zoom flash head covers a range of 20-200mm. It can control up to 5 groups of compatible flash units, offers a weather- and dust-resistant design and boasts ‘simplified’ button and dial operation.

First Macro Lens in the Canon EF-M lens series

PlantLab: Urban Farms 40 Times More Productive than Open Fields

A Dutch firm on the cutting edge of indoor agriculture estimates that producing food for the entire world could take place in a space far smaller than the area occupied by Holland, using just 10% of the water needed by traditional farms. The proposal is not without precedent – Japan already has one prototype urban farm that is 100 times more productive than farmers’ fields.

Noting that the vast majority of people will live in cities in the coming decades, PlantLab suggests a solution that involves using existing basements and purpose-built structures for our future food production. This means less energy, space, time and water than conventional methods.

Urban farming in controlled environments lets growers take full advantage of variables like custom lighting, using far-red LED lamps that reduce moisture requirements for plants. Naturally, interior spaces are also free from the uncontrolled variables of weather and pests as well, increasingly reliability.

Automatic systems can optimize yields based on crop types, making indoor farms more effective than greenhouses and far more productive than fields. The ever-increasing efficiency and lowering costs of LEDs mean this method will only become more viable over time.

iHeart(StreetArt) is a street artist based in Vancouver whose creations span the spectrum from traditional tags and stencils to this series of works reflecting on our virtual lives and interactions, particularly how young people are raised in this strange new culture of communication.

He variously uses, abuses, twists and repurposes elements of our wireless language, giving hashtags and message bubbles new meaning. While he is not alone in this pursuit of geek graffiti or in using street art for social commentary, his dark humor and unique style set him apart.

Firmware updates to reduce Sony FE lens startup times on the way

Sony is releasing a pair of firmware updates this month that will reduce startup times when FE lenses are attached to both full-frame and APS-C bodies. The first update, available now, will make your E-mount camera get ready to shoot in less time when using five currently available FE lenses. The second update, due later this month, will do the same for Sony’s a7 series, this time for the four new lenses announced today. Read more

World’s Largest Indoor Farm is 100 Times More Productive

The statistics for this incredibly successful indoor farming endeavor in Japan are staggering: 25,000 square feet producing 10,000 heads of lettuce per day (100 times more per square foot than traditional methods) with 40% less power, 80% less food waste and 99% less water usage than outdoor fields.

Customized LED lighting developed with GE helps plants grow up to two and half times faster, one of the many innovations employed in this enterprise by Shigeharu Shimamura, the man who helped turn a former semiconductor factory into the planet’s biggest interior factory farm.

Shimamura has shortened the cycle of days and nights in this artificial environment, growing food faster, while optimizing temperature, lighting and humidity and maximizing vertical square footage in this vast interior space (about half the size of a football field).

With a long-standing passion for produce production, he “got the idea for his indoor farm as a teenager, when he visited a ‘vegetable factory’ at the Expo ’85 world’s fair in Tsukuba, Japan. He went on to study plant physiology at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, and in 2004 started an indoor farming company called Mirai, which in Japanese means ‘future.’”

The beauty of this development lies partly in its versatility – since it deals in climate-controlled spaces and replicable conditions, a solution of this sort can be deployed anywhere in the world to address food shortages of the present and future. Saving space, indoor vertical farms are also good candidates for local food production in crowded and high-cost urban areas around the globe. Aforementioned strides in waste and power reduction also make these techniques and approaches far more sustainable and cost-efficient.
