Vintage lens shootout: three lenses, one model

Vintage lens enthusiast Mathieu Stern took a break from coughing up fake blood in the name of dispelling lens myths this week to compare some of his favorite vintage lenses in a shootout. Stern went out for a single photo shoot with one model and three vintage lenses: the Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C., the Soligor 21mm f/3.8, and the Helios 103 53mm f/1.8 (modified for tilt focusing).

The video is the first in a new video series that will help highlight the unique qualities of vintage glass by comparing three lenses at a time.

Definitely don’t expect ultra-sharp photos that’ll compare with the best (technically speaking) glass of today. But you should expect unique and interesting looking photos that might just inspire you to pick up some of these cheap old lenses on eBay and have some fun. Here’s a sample photo captured with each lens:

If you’re into the vintage look, the nice thing about these lenses is that they usually don’t cost you much to try out for yourself. Just do a quick eBay search and you’ll see that you can grab a Helios 103 53mm f/1.8 for less than $ 40, a Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. for about $ 80, and the most expensive of the bunch, the Soligor 21mm f/3.8, for $ 275.

Most of us love to share our photos and see the response or family and friends have to them. Even more exciting is when strangers begin to show appreciation for our photographs. The desire to have your photos seen and enjoyed by others can be a real motivation for you to enjoy photography. But getting your photographs noticed is not so easy.

This has become more of a challenge in recent years because pretty much everybody has a some form of a camera these days. Social media has made it extremely easy to share photos and have them seen by a potentially global audience. Take some time to learn more. Learning about light, exposure, color, tone, composition and timing will help you produce more creative, more interesting, more noticeable photographs. And, if you think about it, you probably something about these things already, because you see them all the time, but are not necessarily thinking about them.

You can’t see anything if there’s no light. Light is the essence of photography. With no light, you can have no photo. Learning to appreciate different types of light and when some light is better for making photos than others, will help you create more outstanding photographs. You see light all the time and if you can begin to understand it and appreciate how to expose your photographs well, you will create more compelling images. Knowing something of the limitations of your camera and how it captures tone and color will also help greatly in the creative process.

Compose and time your photos better

Learning composition rules and developing a real feel for them will also help your photographs be more impactful. Like with any creative expression, learning the rules will allow you to eventually implement them without really thinking about them. This is when I believe you will become most creative.

Certainly timing your photographs well takes research and practice. Learning to anticipate action and choose precisely the best time to make a photograph, the decisive moment, is a skill that will certainly enhance your photography and make it stand out.

2. Become intimate with your equipment

Learning how to use your camera well and becoming confident will result in a more enjoyable and more creative photography experience. I have met (and taught) many people who own very nice cameras but are not confident in using them. If you don’t have a good understanding of your camera you will most likely become somewhat frustrated when you pick it up to use it, or later when you are looking at disappointing photos.

Becoming familiar with your camera and how to use it well takes time and commitment to study. Because each camera model is different, with the controls in different places, it means you need to do some research and hands on practice to know how to use your cameras with confidence.

Essentially all cameras are the same. They function the same way, with light hitting the sensor (or film) to create photographs. Whether you use a camera in any of the automatic modes, or prefer to use it in Manual Mode, the process of creating photos is the same, but the amount of creative control differs greatly.

Setting your exposure manually gives you far more control over the end result. Learning to do this takes a bit more dedication but will ultimately result in you making more unique, creative photographs. If your camera is always set to one of the automatic modes then the camera is making some (or all) of the most creative choices. Cameras are smart, but they are not creative – you are.

Learning to take control of the camera will help you enjoy the creative process of photography far more than if you have to stop and think about the basics of what to do each time you pick up your camera.

3. Photography can be therapeutic

Having creative drive, wanting to make good photos and have others enjoy them, will hopefully lead you to want to learn more about using your camera well. Doing that will free you up to enjoy your whole photography experience and you can then experience photography as a therapy.

Expressing your creativity with a camera you understand and love is very therapeutic. Taking time out from your busy day, even just for 10 or 15 minutes, to take a few photographs can be enjoyable and relaxing. Indulging in longer photography sessions on weekends or during vacations can be terrifically therapeutic.

I find when I pick my camera up to shoot for pleasure, (it’s different shooting for work if I have a client to please,) I can easily become absorbed only in making photographs, and nothing else matters! Being able to really zone in on what I am doing helps me forget all the worries and stresses I may be experiencing in life and just enjoy the process of being creative.

Narrowing the attention of your thoughts to the creative processes of photography, meditating on photography, brings a whole other dimension to the experience. Being aware of and intentionally seeking opportunities where you can use your camera creatively can help you relax differently than other activities you may enjoy. Watching the news on TV, checking social media, or going to a movie are all things that add a change of pace to your daily life. But a lot of what you do to relax does not involve being creative. Being creative with your camera adds a whole new dimension to life and can be most therapeutic.

Conclusion

Having the desire and drive to want your photos to be noticed when you share them is a good reason to learn more about photography. Overcoming the frustration you may feel because you haven’t taken the time to learn how to use your camera is another good solid reason to invest some time, and maybe even some money, in learning how your camera functions and how you can control it better (preferably in manual mode.)

Once you are on the path to learn more about your camera and about photography, knowing that it can be wonderfully therapeutic, should be most encouraging for you to follow some course of study to make the most of your camera – even your phone camera! OnePlus 5 performs well in DxOMark Mobile test, misses top spot by three points

The engineers at DxO Labs have put the brand new OnePlus 5 through the DxOMark Mobile testing process, and the phone did not disappoint.

With an overall score of 87 points, the Chinese manufacturer’s flagship device has delivered a respectable performance on par with well-liked phones like Huawei’s Leica-branded P10 and Sony’s Xperia XZ. This also puts it only three points behind the top-ranked HTC U11, and one point better than Apple’s ever-popular iPhone 7.

DxOMark only tested the OnePlus 5 16MP main camera with F1.7 aperture, not the 20MP/F2.6 secondary 2x tele-module. The camera achieves a photo sub-score of 87 points, delivering good results in both bright and low-light situations. The testers were particularly impressed with the vivid color rendition, accurate white balance, good detail and the fast and smooth autofocus system.

Moving on to video, In the default 1080p/30fps video mode, the OnePlus offers accurate exposure and white balance in all conditions. The testers also liked the quick transition in changing light conditions, the accurate autofocus and the effective stabilization system. This earned the OnePlus a video sub-score of 86 points.

NanGuang launches three new portable LED-lights

The NanGuang CNB144 LED panel retails for £89.94 ($ 115).

Chinese accessory manufacturer NanGuang has launched three new portable LED lights that are designed for use with DSLRs and mirrorless system cameras and attach via the hotshoe. 

The CNB144 and CNLUX1600C are panel lights that come with an adjustable bracket to modify the lighting angle. Both lights offer a brightness output of 1005 LM at 100% brightness and stepless dimmer control. It’s also possible to lock several units together to create a larger light panel. 

The CNB144 weighs 225g and comes with a diffuser in the box. The color temperature is 5600K and can be altered using the included 3200K or pink filters. The CNLUX1600C comes with a bi-colour panel. Color temperature is steplessly adjustable from 3200K-5600K. The CNLUX1600C also comes with a diffuser and pink and blue filters.

The NanGuang CN8F LED fresnel light will cost you £239.94 ($ 307).

The CN8F LED Fresnel Light is designed for both on-camera or stand-alone use. It provides an illumination of 560 LM and a color temperature of 5600K. The fresnel lens can be adjusted to produce a light beam between 10 and 60 degrees. The light also offers stepless brightness control. An integrated frame holds up to three filters of 65 x 70mm size. Orange 3200k and blue 6500K filters are included in the kit, as well as a gelatine filter holder, barn doors and a carry case. The weight is 550g without batteries. 

All lights are battery powered and compatible with Sony NP-FH, NP-FM, NP-F series batteries, Panasonic CGR-D series batteries (using an included adapter plate) or Ni-HM or AA batteries. Optionally you can use an AC 100-240V power adapter. The NanGuang CNB144 price tag is £89.94 ($ 115) in the UK, the CNLUX1600C will set you back £119.94 ($ 154) and CN8F  fresnel light retails at £239.94 ($ 307).

This flower bloom time-lapse took three years and 8TB of raw footage to create

You can pick your favorite symbol of springtime from any number of familiar images. In Seattle, the local favorite is a rain-soaked figure clutching a latte with a cold, dead look in their eyes. But it’s hard to beat the natural beauty and optimism of a blooming flower. That’s the imagery that dominates filmmaker Jamie Scott’s recent time-lapse titled ‘Spring,’ a follow-up to his popular video ‘Fall’ of a couple of years ago.

He gives FStoppers a fascinating look at what it takes to create a time-lapse of this scope. Not surprisingly, a lot of patience and hard drive space were involved. Watch the video, check out the behind-the-scenes and let us know what you think in the comments.

Lomography plans convertible lens system with three focal lengths

Alternative photography brand Lomography has set out plans to produce a system that allows users to achieve three different focal lengths by switching the elements in the front half of a lens. The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System comprises a four-element barrel unit that remains attached to the camera, and three interchangeable front sections that can be switched to deliver 35mm, 50mm or 80mm focal lengths.

A click-less aperture is positioned in the rear section of the Neptune that provides a maximum F-stop setting of F2.8 when used with the 50mm front end. The same iris offers a maximum F number of F3.5 with the 35mm section and F4 with the 80mm section, according to Lomography. Each of the four-element front sections has been given a name – the 35mm F3.5 is called Thalassa, the 50mm F2.8 is called Despina and Proteus is the 80mm F4.

In addition to interchangeable front element groups the system has a collection of six shaped stops that can be inserted to interrupt the passage of light through the lens. The idea is that the shapes cut into the stops, or Special Aperture Plates, influence the characteristic of out-of-focus highlights in the image.

Lomography is using a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, and at the time of writing had already succeeded in raising three times its target figure for production to go ahead. The manual-focus Neptune system will be available in black or silver and in Nikon F, Canon EF and Pentax K mounts. The system will also work with most compact system models via an adapter.

The company says it intends to begin shipping a limited number of Neptune systems in November this year, with the main production being available from February 2018. The full retail price is expected to be around $ 980, but early bird offers are in place from $ 690. The kit comprises a base lens unit, the three converters and the six aperture plates.

We asked three Canon lens masters to name their first and favorite lens designs

What is your first and your favorite Canon lens?

It’s not everyday you get to sit down with three master lens designers, but it’s also not every day you tour Canon’s Utsunomiya lens factory (read the interview and take the tour). Each of the three gentlemen we posed our two questions to – what was the first lens you designed and what is your favorite lens – has decades of experience designing Canon glass.

Masato Okada (center), the Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication Products and Operations, first began designing lenses for Canon back in 1982. Meanwhile, Kenichi Izuki (right), the Plant Manager and Masato Okada (left), the Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication and Products Operations, have each been designing Canon lenses since the late 80’s/early 90’s.

It takes decades of experience to design a lens like the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8L III USM.

What was the first lens design you worked on at Canon?

Masato Okada: “It would go back many years, maybe you weren’t even born yet (Editor’s note: I was not), but the first lens I worked on was the FD 150-600mm F5.6L. It was one of those lenses where it was on a box and you actually had a one-touch action to do the zoom and one-touch action to do the focus. That was a big revelation.”

What was the first lens design you worked on at Canon?

Shingo Hayakawa: “It launched in 1991, the 75-300mm F4-5.6 USM, was the first lens I worked on and also the very first lens in that series. At the time, we actually launched the product at a lower price than the third party manufacturers, which was big news. The version “III” of that lens is still on the market.”

What was the first lens design you worked on at Canon?

Kenichi Izuki: “Because I joined Canon as a technical engineer I have so many memories of all the products I’ve worked on. Initially, I handled maybe 10 products over the course of a year. But the very first one that I worked on, which is now discontinued, is the EF 100-300mm F4.5-5.6 USM. It’s also one of my favorites.”

What is your favorite Canon lens design?

Masato Okada: “For me I’d have to say the 11-24mm F4L USM, because when launched, it allowed the widest angle possible on a full frame with no distortion. And I was torn at the time of production because we could have gone for the 12-24mm F2.8, which I thought would be more customer-prone. But I was developing the lens more in terms of particular users: a videographer for example, needing that extra field of view, even if they can’t physically back out. Other manufacturers were doing the 12-24mm, but only Canon was doing 11-24mm. We thought it was something we should go for. And it was really difficult in terms of the design for mass production. So because of those challenges, I’d say this would be my pick.”

What is your favorite Canon lens design?

Shingo Hayakawa: “I can say that in terms of the lenses we’ve been launching over the years, we’re proud of them all. But the ones that came out last year in 2016, the 16-35mm F2.8L III USM in particular, was very highly spec’d at the time of its release. I’m proud of it because it has amazing performance and resolution. But if I were to narrow it down, my choice would be a lens that came out in 2012: the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L II USM. And if I were to choose a telephoto, I’d say the 200-400mm F4L IS USM with the 1.4x internal extender. But the 24-70mm II is my overall pick.”

What is your favorite Canon lens design?

Kenichi Izuki: “My favorite, which I truly remember because it was so hard to design, was the original Canon 70-200 F2.8 L USM non-IS. I actually worked on the 70-200mm F2.8L USM version II with IS when I became a manager of the division. That posed a challenge because we had to exceed the requirements of the previous version.”

Sony Digital Filter camera app merges parts of three images into one

Sony has announced the release of a new camera app called Digital Filter, giving photographers a way to merge parts from two or three different images into a single photo. It adds greater flexibility to a similar existing app called Sky HDR. Digital Filter is priced at $ 29.99 or $ 19.99 as an upgrade to Sky HDR.

Though they offer similar functionality, the biggest feature difference between Sky HDR and Digital Filter is that the new app supports merging sections of up to three different images, whereas Sky HDR only allows for two exposures. Sony merely states that, ‘The Digital Filter application offers functionality, ease of use and image quality that go beyond the features of Sky HDR.’

Hasselblad to introduce 120mm macro for the X1D with three more lenses to follow

Medium-format camera manufacturer Hasselblad has announced that it will introduce four new lenses over the next twelve months for its X1D mirrorless model. The new lenses will be a 22mm wideangle, a 65mm moderate wide, a 120mm macro and the system’s first zoom – a 35-75mm.

The first lens to arrive will be the XCD 120mm F3.5 macro that will have a maximum image scale of 1:2 and a closest focus distance of 0.43m from the camera sensor. The focal length on the X1D sensor will deliver the angle of view we’d expect from a lens of just longer than 90mm on a 135 format system. As you’d expect, the lens has an integrated shutter and will be able to achieve synchronisation with flash at shutter speeds of up to 1/2000sec. The lens uses 10 elements in 7 groups and an internal floating focusing mechanism. It will weigh 970g and will measure 150mmx81mm.

Hasselblad says the flat field reproduction makes the lens ideal for accurate macro work, but that the moderate telephoto focal length will also suit portrait photographers. The autofocusing system is effective throughout the entire distance range, and the smallest aperture available will be F32.

While the 120mm macro is due to arrive in June there is no date yet for the release of the other lenses, but the company expects to make them available within the next twelve months. No technical data has been provided other than their focal lengths. Pricing will also be released closer to the availability dates. Hasselblad announces four new XCD lenses for the X1D

Combining Compact Format with the Highest Optical Quality

Following the hugely successful launch of the ground-breaking X1D in 2016, Hasselblad is delighted to introduce four new XCD lenses. The XCD 120mm Macro lens is the first to complement the existing XCD lens family, and will be available at the end of June 2017.

The exceptionally high performing 120mm F3.5 lens brings together the compact format of the XCD range with the maximum optical quality across the frame with a flat image field. Providing a new versatility to the X1D user, the lens is suitable for both close-up work up to a 1:2 image scale, and also as a mid-range telephoto lens for portrait or other photography requiring a longer focal length. Auto or manual focusing goes from infinity to 1:2 without the need for extension tubes.

Like the other XCD lenses, XCD 120mm Macro lens has an integral central shutter offering a wide range of shutter speeds and full flash synchronisation up to 1/2000th second.

Hasselblad Product Manager, Ove Bengtson commented: “The XCD 120mm Macro lens complements the existing XCD dedicated autofocus lenses which were developed to support optical quality and portability. This is the first addition to the X1D range of lenses in 2017 and we are excited to launch more lenses later in the year.”

Over the next 12 months, Hasselblad will also launch the XCD 35-75mm Zoom*, XCD 65mm*, and XCD 22mm Wide Angle* lenses. By the beginning of 2018, the X1D will have access to seven dedicated XCD lenses and all twelve HC/HCD lenses using the XH lens adapter.

Cosina announces development of three Voigtlander E-mount lenses

Cosina has announced the development of three manual focus Voigtländer prime lenses for Sony E-mount: the MACRO APO-LANTHAR 65mm F2 Aspherical, the Classic Nokton 35mm F1.4, and NOKTON 40mm F1.2 Aspherical. All three lenses offer complete E-mount support and will transmit EXIF data, will work with in-body image stabilization and allow automatic magnification when focusing.

Originally announced at Photokina 2016, the Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm F2 is one of the brightest Macro lenses for full-frame, and offers a reproduction ratio of 1:2. The Classic Nokton 35mm F1.4 is a redesign of the M-mount version, with optimization for the Sony’s sensor. Finally, the Nokton 40mm F1.2 is the fastest 40mm for full-frame format, and will be one of the fastest E-mount lenses available.
