Western Digital upgrades its My Cloud NAS system with multi-tasking processor

Storage manufacturer Western Digital Corporation has added a new 1.3 GHz dual core processor and 1GB of DDR3 memory to its latest network attached storage system and increased its maximum capacity to 12TB. The My Cloud EX2 Ultra is a twin-bay data storage device that the company aims at creative users, and which it is says is especially suited to those working with still and moving images. The new faster processor and built-in memory will allow users to multi-task ‘with ease’ and to stream high resolution content from the device to other connected PCs, smartphones and TVs.

The EX2 Ultra comes empty or fitted with Western Digital’s Red hard drives in total capacities of 4TB, 8TB or 12TB. The drives can be managed in RAID 0, RAID 1; JBOD and spanning modes, and they can be hot swapped while the unit is still running. Temporary expansion can also be achieved by connecting additional USB 3.0 external hard drives via the EX2’s USB ports.

The Western Digital My Cloud EX2 Ultra is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, and is priced from £135 with no disks, to £245 for 4TB, £390 for 8TB and £519.99 for 12TB.

Cambo introduces Canon EOS lens plate with aperture control for Actus view camera system

Cambo has devised a new Canon EF/EF-S lens plate for its Actus view camera system that allows users to control aperture settings on Canon EOS lenses. The Cambo Actus system is designed to deliver a view camera style of shooting to some mirrorless camera bodies, consisting of a lens plate and a body plate with bellows and a monorail in between.

As EOS lenses have no manual aperture control, a plain mounting plate will only allow the lenses to be used at their widest aperture setting. The new ACB-CA plate however has electronic contacts that allow it to communicate with the lens, and a finger wheel so the photographer can dial in required aperture settings. An OLED display shows aperture values as well as the focal length in use, even when a zoom is mounted. 

The ACB-CA adapter will provide tilt, shift, swing, rise and fall movements between the front and rear standards with an EOS lens and a mirrorless camera mounted, though other lens systems allow movements with Nikon and Canon DSLR bodies. The Actus-DB system allows digital backs to be used.

NEW Cambo Actus Canon Auto Lens Mount

Cambo has released the NEW ACB-CA adapter for Canon EF lenses for use on the ACTUS mini view camera. The adapter has built-in electronic controls for setting and operating the aperture of Canon EF lenses.

Normally when a Canon auto iris lens is removed from the camera body the lens aperture is wide open. The ACB-CA communicates with the lens and enables the user to adjust the aperture, giving you full control.

This adapter has an internal battery for continuous use and features an OLED display which shows the preset or set aperture together with the focal length of the lens. The communication is accurate, such that the display will also show the focal length of zoom lenses.

The adapter accepts lenses fitted with Canon EOS bayonet, in combination with the ACTUS view camera. The ACB-CA adapter is finished in black to match the ACTUS-B camera version.

This ACB-CA lens adapter is designed to work with mirrorless* camera bodies, such as the Sony A7 series, Fujifilm X series and Canon M series. When mounted on the Actus the adapter will tilt and swing within the lens image circle that is being used. The rear rise/fall and left/right shift will operate as normal, again within the lens’s image circle.

*Mirrorless camera bodies have the imaging sensor further forward enabling the lens to focus at infinity or closer.

Phase One adds the IQ3 100MP back to its A-series system

Danish camera manufacturer Phase One has expanded its range of A-Series offerings to include the new 100MP IQ3 digital back. The A-Series kits consist of an Alpa 12TC camera body with one of three lenses and a choice of IQ3 backs in 50-, 60-, 80- and 100-million-pixel resolutions. The A-Series is particularly interesting as the cameras have no mirror, so vibrations are kept to a minimum at the time of exposure.

Images have to be composed on the rear touchscreen using the 30 fps live view feature, though the Wi-Fi functionality of the back allows connection to Apple iPod and iPhone devices via the Capture Pilot app for remote viewing, control and capture. The IQ3 backs also offer USB 3 and HDMI ports for tethered shooting to a computer running the Capture One Pro 9 software application, or for streaming live view content to a TV or field monitor.

Each lens is calibrated with the body in the factory, so there should be no need for users to create custom color correction profiles themselves. The calibrations are stored in the IQ3 back, and users just have to select the matching menu item when changing lenses.

The IQ3 100MP back in the kits is the standard model, and can also be used with the Phase One XF DSLR camera.

The kits come with the Rodenstock ALPAR F4.0 35mm, but an ultra-wide Alpagon 23mm F5.6 and a ‘standard’ Alpagon 70mm F5.6 are also available. The A-series IQ3 100MP system is available now, and is priced at $ 56,000 with the 35mm lens. It comes with a 5-year warranty and personalized 24/7 support.

Samyang adds 14mm and 35mm lenses to Xeen cinema system

The 14mm T3.1 Samyang Xeen lens

Korean lens manufacturer Samyang has added two new wide angle lenses to its Xeen series of full-frame video lenses. The new focal lengths are 14mm and 35mm, and while the 35mm conforms to the family-standard maximum aperture of T1.5 the 14mm opens only to T3.1. The Xeen system now contains a total of five lenses as these two join the existing 24mm, 50mm and 85mm.

All the lenses are manual focus only, and feature focus and aperture gear rings in identical positions so that they can be switched quickly in and out of the same rig. Filter rings also match, and users have a choice of metric or imperial focus scales. The lenses come with interchangeable mounts, and adapters are available for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, PL and Micro Four Thirds bodies.

The 35mm T1.5 Samyang Xeen lens

Samyang is proud of the way its lenses render out-of-focus highlights, and the new 35mm complements the existing lenses with its 11-blade diaphragm. The wider lens uses a 9-bladed iris.

Fujifilm X-E2S improves upon predecessor’s AF system and ergonomics, adds electronic shutter

The Fujifilm X-E2S is an update to the company’s premium rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, the gold award-winning X-E2, which was introduced way back in 2013.

Probably the most significant feature is an improved Hybrid AF system (similar to that of the X-T10), which adds 77-point zone and wide/tracking modes to go along with the 49 points that were already available on the X-E2. Object tracking during autofocus is an area where Fujifilm digital cameras have traditionally lagged, so it’s encouraging to see efforts made to modernize the system: ‘wide/tracking’ was specifically introduced to track subjects around the frame in continuous AF. Fujifilm is also claiming improvements in single-point focus acquisition, with ‘best-case’ focus speeds of 0.06 sec on the X-E2S, compared with 0.08 sec on the X-E2.

Another ‘big deal’ is the addition of an electronic shutter. This allows for shutter speeds as high as 1/32000 sec as well as totally silent shooting, though rolling shutter is the main tradeoff when using a fully electronic shutter.

Three other features of note include a new top ISO of 51200, a refined grip, and a new user interface for the menu system.

What hasn’t changed is the 16.3MP X-Trans CMOS Sensor II, large and high-res electronic viewfinder, 3″ LCD display, and Wi-Fi support. The X-E2S can still capture 1080/60p video and offers the latest set of Film Simulation Modes, including Classic Chrome. 

Fujifilm X-E2 owners can take heart – a firmware update will be offered in early February bringing AF system updates, performance improvements and the new graphical interface introduced in the X-E2S.

Something that caught our eye was the difference in price between the X-E2S and its predecessor. Back in 2013 the X-E2 launched at a price of $ 999 body only, where the X-E2S will be priced at just $ 699 (and $ 999 when paired with the 18-55mm F2.8-4 lens). The X-E2S doesn’t have the most cutting-edge technology, but at that price it seems like a pretty good deal.

FAA officially launches drone registration system

The Federal Aviation Administration has officially launched the drone registration program first reported in October. Drone operators are required to register their UAVs with the Unmanned Aircraft System registry starting December 21. Failure to register could result in criminal and civil penalties.

Under the new system, all aircraft must be registered with the FAA including those ‘operated by modelers and hobbyists.’ Once registered, drone operators must carry the registration certificate during operation. This new system only applies to drones weighing more than 0.55lbs/250g and less than 55lbs/25kg. The only exception to the registration requirement is indoor drone flights.

Required registration information includes a mailing address and physical address, email address, and full names; however, no information on the drone’s make, model, or serial number is required from recreational users. Non-recreational users will need to provide drone information, including serial number, when that particular registration system goes live. 

Failure to register could result in civil penalties up to $ 27,500, or criminal penalties up to 3 years in prison and $ 250,000. A $ 5 registration charge is applied, but will be refunded to those who register before January 20. The registration certificate is sent in an email to be printed at home.

Leica introduces SL system with Typ 601 full-frame mirrorless camera and lenses

Leica has introduced the full-frame SL system, including the SL Typ 601 ILC and three compatible SL lenses. The SL uses a 24MP CMOS sensor adapted from the Leica Q, and true to form its weather-sealed body is cut from a single block of milled aluminum. Read more

FAA reportedly developing mandatory drone registration system

The U.S. government may soon require most drones to be registered, according to the Associated Press. Sources speaking on the matter state the FAA is working with unspecified industry and government officials to create a registration system. While the exact requirements aren’t known, it is believed small and toy drones will not require registration. Read more
