‘Streets in Mind’ shows NYC through the eyes of B&W street photographer Alan Schaller

SmugMug Films has released Streets in Mind, its latest film that follows London-based street photographer Alan Schaller around the busy streets of New York City.

The film comes in at five-and-a-half minutes and takes a wonderful look into the life and work of Schaller. As narrator, Schaller explains how he came to be a street photographer after a career in music.

In the words of SmugMug Films, Schaller’s ‘surrealist, geometric eye reveals the hauntingly intimate beauty which exists in the hustle of every day life in the Big Apple.’

OPPO teases Reno device, shows 10x zoom samples

OPPO has been talking about its 10x periscope smartphone zoom lens for what seems like an eternity but now we are finally seeing some action after all the talk. The Chinese brand will be launching its new OPPO Reno line of devices on the 10th of April and has been teasing some information ahead of the event.

We’ve seen an allegedly official image of the device that shows the triple-camera with 48MP main module and 10 x periscope zoom on the rear posted on the social network Weibo. Other specs are so far largely unknown but it seems there will be models with Snapdragon 710 and 855 chipsets and a large 4,000+ mAh battery.

The company has also posted a number of images combining an image captured with the wide-angle camera with an inlay from the 10x zoom. The images are not full size, so aren’t any useful for judging image detail, but they do give you a pretty good idea of the range of focal lengths that the camera will be covering. And if the samples are anything to go by 2019 might be the year in which the long range smartphone zoom will be taking off.

Canon patent shows off ultra-fast, ultra wide 14-21mm F1.4 RF lens

Canon hasn’t been shy about the improvements and flexibility its new RF mount affords lens designers, but if a recent lens patent ends up coming to fruition, it might just be the most interesting RF lens we’ve seen yet.

U.S. Patent Publication Number US 2018/0314060 details the optical design for an RF 14-21mm F1.4 lens, an ultra-fast, ultra-wide-angle lens that will inevitably have astrophotographers picking their jaws off the floor.

As with all patents, there’s a good chance the lens design will never make its way past the drawing board, but recent rumors suggest this very lens could be amongst the RF lenses Canon will be announcing in 2020.

Canon assured us the new RF mount would lead to unique lens designs — this may very well be one of the designs it had in mind.

CP+ 2019: Olympus shows super-tele zoom and 2.0 TC under glass

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm 1:4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO

Olympus announced its intent to make a 150-400mm F4.5 zoom back in January. There was a demonstration sample on show at CP+ in Yokohama. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm 1:4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO has a name that matches its considerable size.

Features (of some sort) galore

The side of the lens shows five switches, which we’d expect to give direct access to AF/MF, IS, focus limiting and two other things. Possibly including the control to engage and disengage the 1.25x teleconveter that’s built in. Bringing the TC into the optical path turns the lens into a 187.5-500mm F5.6. That’s 375-1000mm F11 equivalent, if those numbers aren’t already big enough for you.

Sensibly sized

Considering the range it covers it’s a relatively compact lens. While it’s easy to point out that it’s an F9 or F11 equivalent, it’s worth remembering that there aren’t many 300-800mm/375-1000mm lenses for other formats. If you need that impressive reach in a lens that you can actually pick up, this will be one of the only options.

There’s a predictably large lens hood/bucket to go with it.

Who’s it for?

Olympus says the lens will be available in 2020 and is intended for sport, wildlife and bird photographers.

M.Zuiko Digital 2x Teleconverter MC-20

Also on show was a non-built-in teleconverter: the MC-20, which will be available in Summer 2019. This doubles the focal length of a lens it’s attached to, but at the cost of 2 stops of light. The MC-20 can be used with 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO as well as the existing M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO and M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO.

Combined with the forthcoming zoom and its internal teleconverter, we believe you’d get a 375-1000mm F11 lens (equivalent to a 750-2000mm F22 lens on full frame). Though the combination seems rather specialist.

CP+ 2019: Panasonic shows 10-25mm F1.7 mockup

Panasonic announced that it would be building a 10-25mm F1.7 zoom back at Photokina in later 2018 and has a mockup on show at CP+ in Yokohama. The red box on the label says ‘Development Announcement’ in Japanese. If nothing else, it’s a striking way to confirm the company’s commitment to the Micro Four Thirds system as a high-end format.

Scarce details

Very little additional information has been given, but the mockup shows it will have a dedicated aperture ring like the Panasonic Leica 15mm F1.7 prime. The mockup also makes clear just how much larger it’s going to be than the 12-60mm F2.8-4.0.

Five primes in a tube

Panasonic seems committed to its ‘five primes in one lens’ concept, by marking the 10, 12, 14, 18 and 25mm focal lengths on the zoom ring, representing 20, 24, 28, 35 and 50mm equivalent focal lengths that are popular choices for prime lenses. This shouldn’t be taken to mean the lens will only offer these focal lengths, though.

For video, as well as stills

While the ‘five primes’ idea is a great way of appealing to photographers, we suspect plenty of videographers will also be interested in the idea of a lens that gives them a wide-angle to normal field of view with a constant F1.7 aperture, meaning no need to change lenses (or change any rigging built around the camera), between shots. Sadly there are still no details of either price or availability.

CP+ 2019: Ricoh shows PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW

Hands-on with PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW

Alongside the GR III, Ricoh is using the CP+ show in Yokohama Japan to give its customers a first look at a new high-performance wideangle lens for APS-C. The PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW was announced way back in the Fall of 2017 and was supposed to ship the following summer, but it was delayed. We’re at CP+, where we took a closer look.

Hands-on with PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW

The 11-18mm is a large, pretty heavy and quite costly lens, and if someone had told us it was actually designed for full-frame, we’d have no difficulty in believing them. According to Ricoh, the new lens offers significantly improved image quality compared to the older 12-24mm F4 ED AL.

Designed for outdoor use

Designed for use outdoors, the ‘AW’ in the lengthy model name stands for ‘All-Weather’ – a higher grade of weather-resistance than the more common ‘WR’ rating offered further down Ricoh’s Pentax lens lineup. Like all of the Pentax AW lenses, the 11-18mm F2.8 feels like it could be carried up a mountain in the rain, dropped off the top, dusted off and put back on the camera without sustaining any serious damage (but please don’t try it).

The distinctive orange ring is a rubber gasket, helping keep dust and moisture from getting into the camera from around the lens mount.

Focus clamp

We’re used to seeing lock/clamp switches on lenses, but it’s unusual to see a focus lock. Since the 11-18mm is intended for use by astrophotographers, for whom precise focusing positioning is essential, especially at wide apertures, Ricoh wanted to make sure that once accurate focus has been achieved, it stays locked.

Moving the clamp switch to ‘on’ disengages the focus clutch, ensuring that even if the focus ring is knocked, the focus position won’t change.

Optical construction

With a focal range equivalent to 16.5-27mm when mounted on an APS-C body, the 11-18mm’s optical construction is comprised of 16 elements, including two aspherical elements, two extra low-dispersion elements and one aspherical extra-low dispersion element. Ricoh claims that its ‘HD’ coating reduces reflections by more than 50% compared to regular coatings, too, which should help increase optical quality even further, by reducing flare and ghosting.

Price and availability

The PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW will be available soon, for $ 1399.

CP+ 2019: Canon shows concept cameras and limited-edition gold EOS RP

Canon concept cameras and limited-edition silver EOS RP

Canon has been working on a small range of concept cameras for a little while now, and following last year’s display of various mockups, this year the company has been demonstrating some working models, which may or may not be developed into real, shipping cameras.

First up is a digital camera designed for kids. This is a non-working example, but it’s easy to grasp the basic idea. It’s a colorful, simple camera with a tunnel-type optical viewfinder and simplified controls.

Rather than conventional exposure modes and complicated controls, Canon envisions kids interacting with the camera via ‘missions’, designed to help them created images based around simple themes, like emojis, colors, or (cat?) feelings. We’re showing the pink version here, but the camera might be available in several different color variations.

‘Smart’ camera

Next up is a ‘smart’ camera, designed to automatically select and focus on subjects without any user interaction. This particular model is a working camera, set up on Canon’s booth. The housing is motorized, allowing the lens to be directed up and down, and around in any direction, through 360 degrees.

As I was setting up my camera to grab a shot, it locked on to my face. Which I must admit was a bit disconcerting. Does anyone remember the Kodak Party Shot? This is a similar kind of thing, except it can capture video, and it actually works. I don’t know who the lady is at lower-left, by the way, but I hope she’s not driving.

Telephoto camera

This is a working prototype of a lightweight telephoto zoom camera, which in its current form allows the users to switch between a 100 and 400mm equivalent field of view, at the press of a button.

Perhaps intended to provide a means of capturing the action from the stands of a sports stadium or concert arena, we’re told that the simple 100/400mm toggle is provisional – Canon is working on a stepless zoom to allow for the use of intermediate focal lengths.

Canon is also working on miniaturizing the concept, and although these are just mockups, we’re told that they’re closer to the ideal size of the camera, if it ends up being developed for commercial release. Notice what looks like an Apple Lightning connector on the pink mockup, reminiscent of the short-lived DxO One.

Finally, here’s a concept for a colorful outdoor action camera, based around a fixed wideangle lens. The square cutout is both a simple framing device, and (as shown here) a means of hanging the camera from, or attaching it to things. The flat panel on the front of the camera is removable, and held on by a magnet.

Next up is the very real, very working, and definitely shipping limited edition gold EOS RP. Sadly this color variant will only be available in limited numbers, in Japan. We say ‘sadly’ because it’s actually quite handsome.

And in fact, strictly speaking it’s more of a champagne finish. If you remember the old film-era EOS 50 / Elan II it’s rather similar, with the control dials picked out against the warmer body finish in bright, neutral silver. Sadly if you want one, you’ll probably need to fly to Japan to get it – and be quick, because there are only 5,000 in existence.

Canon shows forthcoming RF lenses including radical 70-200mm F2.8 IS

Introduction

Alongside the EOS RP, Canon has announced the next six lenses it plans to introduce for its RF mount. Don’t be fooled by the timing: although they are being announced with the RP most of these lenses are not being targeted at entry-level or even mass-market customers.

Canon has already said it’s working on a full frame mirrorless camera aimed at professionals, and most of today’s development announcements make clear it intends to have appropriate lenses ready to suit it. All six lenses will be formally launched by the end of 2019, the company says.

Details are pretty scant right now (technically Canon is only announcing its intention to develop these lenses), but mockups of all six were on show at the pre-launch RP event.

RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM

To us the most exciting lens to be revealed is the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS. Part of our excitement is that a 70-200mm F2.8 is one of the workhorses of any system. Pros and enthusiasts use these lenses for a whole range of shooting situations, from portraiture to sports, so it’s an essential ingredient for a system trying to appeal to high-end shooters.

Another piece of good news is that the lens uses Canon’s Nano USM lens motors. The company is a little cagey about exactly how these work, other than that they provide linear, rather than the rotational motion of the ring-type USM motors used in DSLR lenses. What we do know is that the fastest and smoothest focusing lens in the RF system so far (the 24-105mm F4L IS) is powered by Nano USM, which bodes well for the 70-200mm.

Oh, and the other interesting thing about the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS? It’s TINY. Here we’ve shot it alongside the most recent EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS and you can see just how much smaller it’s going to be. Unless the ‘pro’ RF model ends up being huge, this is going to make an impressively compact combination.

Canon’s engineers wouldn’t be drawn on exactly how they’ve managed to make it so small, beyond pointing us back to the claimed benefits of the short and wide lens mount. There may well be something more complex going on: we’ll find out when it’s formally released but we were given the distinct impression that it’s not a diffractive optics (Fresnel) design.

RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM

Another great pro workhorse is the 24-70mm F2.8 and Canon’s going to launch one of those, too. We’ve had no details about specifics but it’s a sensibly-sized lens, even if it isn’t as impressively small at its tele counterpart.

Canon has confirmed that it’s working on an in-body stabilization system

Like the 70-200mm the 24-70mm has built-in image stabilization and Canon has confirmed that it’s working on an in-body stabilization system for future camera models that will work in conjunction with this. So you’ll get stabilization on all RF bodies and even greater stabilization on others.

Like the 70-200mm, the 24-70mm will be driven by a Nano USM focus motor.

RF 15-35mm F2.8 L USM

The last in the cover-the-bases pro lineup is the 15-35mm F2.8. Canon says the RF lens mount allowed them to make it a 15-35mm, rather than starting at 16mm.

Again the lens is small and stabilized and, like the other two F2.8 zooms, will be driven by a fast, silent Nano USM motor.

We only wonder whether it needs more prominent markings to make it easier to distinguish from the 24-70, when they’re placed next to one another in a camera bag.

RF 85mm F1.2 L USM

While the trio of F2.8 lenses are all pretty compact, the same can’t be said of the 85mm F1.2. We thought the RF 50mm F1.2 was big (in part because we’ve only had the mid-range EOS R to mount it on, so far), but perhaps not unreasonably, the 85mm F1.2 is even bigger.

We’ve been impressed by the optical performance of the 50mm F1.2 so far. And, while we can’t be sure how much of that can be ascribed to the short, wide lens mount, Canon is clearly doing something right. A super-fast 85mm prime that can be confidently shot using off-center AF points is likely to be an exciting prospect as a portrait lens, even if you don’t always opt for for the hairbreadth depth-of-field that F1.2 can give you.

On the subject of focus, like the RF 50, the 85mm’s focus elements are too big and heavy for the use of a Nano USM motor, so it’s based around slightly less snappy ring-type USM drive.

The ‘DS’ designation is new for Canon. Sadly it doesn’t mean we should expect avant garde engineering and styling. Instead, it stands for ‘Defocus Smoothing’ and promises improved bokeh, compared with the standard version.

If that makes you think of apodization elements (essentially an element that’s progressively darker towards the edge to prevent bright-edged bokeh), then the things we were told in our interview with senior engineers will only confirm that assumption.

The DS was the only lens not shown in mockup form as we’ve been told that not all the design decisions have been made yet. Despite this, a computer rendering of the lens has been issued: it says ‘Defocus Smoothing’ on the front, whereas the non-DS version does not.

RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM

The only lens not clearly aimed at a high-end audience is the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM. It’s designed as a do-everything travel zoom, giving a 10x zoom capability.

We’ve mounted it here on the EOS RP and you can see it’s well matched (many of the other RF lenses have a wider diameter, and as a result lift the RP body off the ground if you haven’t attached the optional grip extension).

The two most obvious features are its comparatively small size and comparatively slow aperture range. We stress ‘comparatively’ when it comes to aperture, since you’d need a 15-150mm F2.5-4.0 on Canon APS-C to be equivalent, and few keen photographers would turn their noses up at such a lens. The other thing to notice is that it has only two rings, so we wonder whether the ‘focus’ ring will double as a custom ring when in AF mode.

Summary

The addition of these six lenses will extend the RF system to ten lenses by the end of 2019. With the three F2.8 zooms, 50 and 85mm F1.2s and the monstrous/rather cool 28-70mm F2, it means seven of the options have a distinctly high-end feel to them (and, we suspect, will have price tags to match).

This may leave EOS RP and many EOS R users a little short of choice (or push them towards adapting EF DSLR lenses), but makes very clear that Canon is gearing up for a pro-level RF camera sooner, rather than later.

Newly shared 1900s photo shows early example of a ‘selife’

Redditor KevlarYarmulke shared an image featuring an early version of the ‘selfie’ on Reddit’s r/OldSchoolCool subreddit last week. The photograph, which is simply dated as ‘1900s,’ features what appears to be a family portrait also showing the photographer who took the picture. Including both the photographer and the subjects in the photo was made possible by the clever use of a large mirror positioned on a tree stump.

This is potentially one of the oldest known photos showing a mirror-based selfie, joining Robert Cornelius’ 1839 self-portrait believed to be the first ‘selfie’ ever taken.

A number of portraits have appeared on Reddit’s OldSchoolCool subreddit demonstrating the film camera and mirror technique. Last month, for example, a user by the name ‘WillianGBishop’ shared a 1960s image of his grandfather taking a self-portrait with a Miranda camera and a mirror. Various users have also shared a photo reportedly from the 1940s titled ‘Wartime Selfie’ that features a couple taking a self-portrait in a mirror.

WikiShootMe shows you nearby Wikipedia items in need of photographs

If there ever comes a time when you’re out of subjects to photograph — or you have a few free hours between shoots — take a look at WikiShootMe, a web app that uses your location to display points of interest on Wikipedia that are in need of photographs.

Hosted by Wikimedia Toolforge, WikiShootMe works by asking permission to use your current location based on your IP address. Once given permission through the browser, it displays a map provided by OpenStreetMap overlaid with different colored dots, each of which coordinates with a Wikipedia article.

Depending on the color of the dot — green, red, blue or yellow — WikiShootMe lets you know whether a photo has been taken for a specific article and what the priority is on getting one in place. Below is a legend provided in WikiShootMe’s help page:

  • Larger, green circles represent Wikidata items with an image
  • Larger, red circles represent Wikidata items without an image
  • Smaller, blue circles represent Commons images
  • Smaller, yellow circles represent Wikipedia articles, in the current language edition (see the language selector in the upper-right corner)

To upload images, you must first create a MediaWiki account and authorize it for uploading content. Once authorized, you’re free to upload content with the help of WikiShootMe. Images uploaded will automatically list you as the copyright holder under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 license.

To take WikiShootMe for a spin, head to the web app. It works on both desktop and mobile devices, meaning you’re free to upload DSLR or mobile photos.
