Landscape shooter Lisa Bettany shares her story of healing through photography

Lisa Bettany is a renowned landscape photographer whose career began as she was recovering from a traumatic injury. Born in Canada, she was a competitive figure skater until the age of 21 when she suffered a back injury while skating. Years into her recovery it was still extremely difficult to walk and sit up, but when she acquired a camera things started to change for the better. One day at a time she ventured farther and farther from home, increasing each trip minute by minute, growing stronger and learning the art of photography. For her, learning photography was very much a journey from darkness into light, and nothing has slowed her down since then.

Purple Reign: Photographer Brian Ach shares his experiences of working with Prince

Brian wanted to show what it was like to experience a Prince performance, so he decided to shoot in a more artistic and editorial way than is typical for concert photography. Celebrity and concert photographer Brian Ach was Prince’s European tour photographer during the artist’s 2011 “Welcome 2” tour through North America, Europe and Australia. Brian shared some of his tour stories with us in his closing talk at PIX 2015, and this morning he chatted again with us about his experience photographing and working with Prince, following the musician’s death this week, aged 57.

You were hired to photograph the European leg of Prince’s tour in 2011. As a huge fan of his music, and knowing his reputation for hard work and high expectations, how did you approach this job?

I didn’t get a chance to meet Prince before the first show in Paris. Since I didn’t have any direction from him about how or what I should shoot, I decided that I was going to be true to myself and shoot the show the way I thought it should be shot. I decided to go for broke and shoot it in an artistic way, to make it worthy of his art and his performance.

When I was ready to deliver the edits to Prince after the show, I opted not to show them to him in chronological order. Instead, I picked what I considered to be the most interesting 6 or 7 shots and put those first. Prince entered the room and said, “You have something to show me,” so I pulled the first picture up on the screen. He stared at it for 15 seconds in complete silence and then got up and walked out of the room. I assumed I was going to get fired after a single shot, but a minute later Prince walked back in with his whole band. He pointed at the screen and said, “Look at that,” and then stood back with a smile on his face. He asked his manager, “Where did you find this guy?” and I answered, “Queens.” He laughed, and from that moment we had an understanding. He expected the best, so as long as I did my best work, we’d work well together.

You have a lot of experience photographing musicians, from U2 to Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen. Was it different to photograph Prince?

The advantage of shooting for an artist is that you get to shoot the whole show rather than just the first 30 seconds of the first few songs. This gives you time to be more creative as long as you get the basic shots out of the way, and it gives you access to areas of the stage that you wouldn’t normally have.

Prince was an epic performer, so photographing his show meant going for the epic shots. I shot a lot of wide angles from behind the stage to bring people right into the performance, and I had the luxury to swap out different lenses to try different things. Normally I would never shoot a concert with a 50mm F1.4, but I used it during a few quieter moments to really capture the feeling of the moment. I had time to experiment, to catch a strobe, get him backlit, drag my shutter. Prince was an artist, so he was going to “get” it if I took some chances to be more creative. However it was still a huge risk if he didn’t like what I shot!

Prince owned his public image. He was one of the first artists to start buying out photographers and his music, to refuse to have his interviews recorded. He made sure there was nothing out there that he felt cheapened his image or his music. He had strong opinions about what he wanted, and over time I was able to learn what he was looking for. Sometimes I argued with him about shots that he rejected and sometimes he conceded. Because even though he knew what he wanted, he was also collaborative. His entire career was one risk after another, so he appreciated and respected when I took risks and challenged him.

When I took this shot [above], I thought, “Yes!  I got it!”  I showed it to Prince and he said no, we weren’t going to use it. It was a great shot of him walking on stage singing with the crowd bursting into applause, but it wasn’t going to work. I asked what was wrong with it and Prince said, “There are empty seats behind me.  It can’t look like there were empty seats at my show.” Those seats had to be empty because they were behind the stage, but even though there was a good reason, it told the wrong story. I agreed with Prince and that photo wasn’t used.

Prince didn’t play a concert; he put on a show, and it wasn’t the same show every night. His band had to know at least 300 songs and they had to be ready to play any of them, as they would often see the set list for the first time when they walked on stage. Nothing was choreographed, so it kept you on your toes thinking, “Man, he’s never done that before.”

One time, Prince did a guitar solo, ripped off the guitar, and threw it into the audience. When I saw him after the show he smiled that little smile he’s famous for. “Did you get that guitar in the air?” “You know what?  I did.”  “Right on.”

Do you have a favorite photo you took of Prince?

Prince was an amazingly energetic performer, but this photo [above] was taken during a very calm, peaceful moment. He was completely in the zone, and it was rare to catch him like this. At the same time, even as he committed himself to this moment, he still knew what he needed to do. Before the shot, he saw me there so he pulled his guitar from behind the mic stand. He knew I was going to get the shot and that it would be good. It’s that kind of awareness that you don’t see in many musicians. So confident in his ability that he didn’t have to think about performing; it just came naturally.

I once commented that his guitar playing seemed so effortless for him. He told me, “Yeah, that’s from practicing so long that my fingers bled. I’d play 8 hours a day when I was growing up. That’s called putting in the work. You’ve gotta put in the work.” He said that a lot, that you have to “put in the work”. I’ve found that to be true for my own work as well. I can’t be free to be creative if I’m thinking about the settings on my camera. A violinist plays scales for hours until they can play music without thinking about the notes. You’ve got to put in the work if you want to be good at something, and Prince put in the work.

What is your favorite memory from working with Prince?

Before the last show I photographed, I left a handwritten note for Prince on the table in his dressing room. I told him how I’d never have believed that the kid in Ohio watching Prince perform ‘Purple Rain’ at the 1985 American Music Awards on TV would some day be living his dream photographing Prince on tour. I thanked him for the opportunity.

Prince didn’t say anything to me before the show or after the show, so I was worried that he didn’t get the note. But at 4am as the night was winding down, he put his arm around me and said, “Thanks for your note; that put me right to go on stage tonight. You make art. These aren’t photos; it’s art.” That was the one of the best things anyone has ever said to me. As a photographer I don’t get feedback or validation very often, so to hear that from one of my heroes was huge for me.

Prince never shared most of the photos I took of him during this tour. By the third show, he said that he wanted to keep the photos for himself rather than send them out on Wire Image. At the end of the tour he told me that the photos were art and needed to be shared, so he picked a few from each show to send to Wire Image. By then the tour was already over so the photos weren’t seen by many people, and Prince kept the rest in his personal collection.

A number of news agencies have called me asking if I have unpublished photos of Prince. I do – I have tens of thousands of them.  But they aren’t mine to share.

Farm-to-Desk: Vertical Urban Farm Shares Tokyo Office Space

Two hundred species of edible greens occupy a quarter of this 215,000-square-foot office in Tokyo, Japan, sharing space with thousands of workers who in turn consume harvested fruits, vegetables and rice right in the building’s cafeteria, a direct farm-to-table connection.

Plants are expertly interspersed with other functions throughout the building, sustained via soil-based and hydroponic systems, including 1,000 square feet of rice paddies and extensive broccoli fields.

Kono Designs elaborates on the ways different food-bearing plants occupy any extra (and sometimes hidden) spaces throughout the structure: “Tomato vines are suspended above conference tables, lemon and passion fruit trees are used as partitions for meeting spaces, salad leaves are grown inside seminar rooms and bean sprouts are grown under benches.”

DxOMark Mobile report: Samsung Galaxy S5 shares top spot

The Galaxy S5 is Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone and successor to the Galaxy S4. It comes with a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, an F2.2 maximum aperture, 4K video capture and phase detection AF, but has to make do without an optical image stabilization system. That doesn’t hold it back much – DxOMark’s Mobile report gives its image quality full marks, making it a joint leader in their rankings with the Sony Xperia Z2. Learn more

Legendary photographer David Goldblatt shares insights from career

How I Shot It: Deanne Fitzmaurice Shares the Story Behind the Shot

So there I was, waiting in the quiet darkness that precedes Kibera’s beautiful sunrises, for the 12 disciples — our security team from a local tribal gang. They were the type of guys you want by your side and the definition of the guys you didn’t want to cross. Despite the high crime and desperation in Kibera, when any of those 12 guys were by my side, I felt safe and free to photograph as much as I wanted without having to look over my shoulder.

At the time of my visit, Kibera wasn’t just the largest slum in Kenya, it was, and as far as I know, still is, the largest slum in Africa. With two and a half weeks in the slum for our shoot, the crew and I had some time — which is really valuable in documentary photography work – time to research, time to talk to locals, time to scout locations, and time to return to promising locations. During our time observing the community, we discovered there was an exodus early in the morning, as many residents of Kibera left to go to work in local factories to earn meager wages.

Always thinking about strong storytelling visuals, we thought it was a good opportunity to get some footage and images of this mass daily evacuation. The early-rising Kiberans used the railroad tracks as a main thoroughfare, and there were little shops alongside the tracks and vendors serving food. We wanted to shoot at sunrise with the hope of catching that beautiful, golden light.

On this early morning, I was shooting both stills and motion, trying to capture the mood and the feel of this unique place. I knew that shortly after the sun came up at 6:45am, the local train was scheduled to come through. I always try to position myself and my camera where there are the best odds of making a good image.

I started building the photograph in my head, working on the things I could control, and let everything else go to chance. I saw some vendors cooking some ugali, a cornmeal bread, causing smoke to rise from the cooking. I thought if I shot backlit, the smoke would help capture the mood of what I was seeing. I was also keenly aware that shooting into the sun can work either for you or against you.

I moved in closer to where the smoke was rising so I had two contrasting elements, the sunrise and the smoke. I heard the train approaching and the masses of people started to rush to get off the tracks and onto the train.

My third element was the train. The only subject left to chance at this point was the people. I didn’t know where they would be or what they would be doing, but I knew I had all three other elements of the composition locked in. This is the fun part for me, in all of my work; when I build the composition and wait to see if I am going to get lucky.

My favourite was this image where three guys jumped up onto the train at the last minute as a starburst began to peek through. The smoke lends nice depth and layers to the photograph and the train was splattered with graffiti, adding a burst of color.

What Gear Did I Use?

I shot these photos with manual settings on a Canon 5D MKIII with a 35mm f1.4 shot at 1/500th at f2.8, ISO 200. I was carrying my equipment in a Think Tank Change Up convertible belt pack/shoulder/ bag and a Think Tank Shape shifter backpack. For the video I was using a Zacuto z-finder, a Zacuto Target rig and a 3 Legged Thing tripod.

Royal photographer shares tips on photographing babies, #royalbaby etc…

As Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge celebrate the birth of a baby son (OMG! #shinynewprince), official Royal photographer for The Sun (that’s the British tabloid newspaper) has shared some tips for photographing babies. Arthur Edwards knows what he’s talking about, having photographed the proud father, William, when he was an infant. Wired.com shares tips on photographing the Supermoon

This Sunday, June 23rd, the moon will be closer to earth than at any point during the year. It just so happens that on Sunday the moon will be full, too, creating what is commonly known as a ‘Supermoon’ which if there are no clouds in the way, will appear larger and brighter than normal. A great opportunity for some backyward astrophotography, in other words. Macro Photographer Teresa Franco Shares Her Best Phoneography Tips!

Scenario: A ladybug turns your shoulder into its new resting spot. What do you do?

Some might say Make a wish. Teresa Franco? She’d say Take a photo.

Snapping a photo of something so tiny can be a challenge. Do not let your camera phone deceive.

You can use your phone to get great macro shots of the tiniest objects, from crystal-ball-esque dew drops on a leaf to a caterpillar snacking on a blade of grass.

We asked her how she does it, and she shared all her favorite phone lenses, apps, and tips for getting fantastic photos of nature’s tiniest details.

Who’s Teresa?

Teresa first caught our eye with her undeniably legit macro skills.

Once we realized she wasn’t using a DSLR or a 3-piece lighting setup — that was when we were really impressed.

Teresa’s a nursing student who happened upon her awesome talent for macro while perusing Instagram one day.

That’s when she discovered the Olloclip, a three-in-one phone lens that lets you shoot fisheye, wide-angle, and macro photos on your phone.

When she’s not studying up on medical stuffs, she’s chasing grasshoppers and fungi to get the best macro photos ever.

The advantage to shooting macro on your phone?

Its small size and light weight makes it very easy to maneuver around tight spaces like under a tiny mushroom or between blades of grass.

It also allows me to free up one hand to use to stabilize a flower or a branch when it’s windy.

What’s in your phoneography camera bag?

  • Microfiber lens cleaning cloth — gotta keep my lenses clean

  • My iPhone
  • Squidcam, Photojojo, and Olloclip macro lenses
  • I love my i.Trek Super Mount (a phone tripod adapter). I use it by itself. It’s great for stabilizing your iPhone when you’re very low on the ground.
  • iPhone charger
  • iPhone earphones with remote

What apps do you use? Do you edit your photos?

My go to camera app is Camera Awesome (for iOS).

It has a “Fast Burst” option that comes in very handy when I’m taking photos of flying/jumping/crawling bugs. I also love that you can lock in the focus. I use both of these features all the time.

The biggest problem I have with macro photography is lighting. So when I edit my photos, I usually just increase the “brightness” in Snapseed (works for both Android & iOS).

I also like VSCO CAM (iOS) and Vintique filters (iOS). I try not to edit my photos too much because I lose a lot of important details.

How many shots does it take to get that one photo? before

Before, I used to follow a bug and blast the camera button like crazy and just hope that one of the hundreds of photos that I took will come out decent.

Now, I’m more patient and can usually anticipate their next move. I’m proud to say that I can take 1-3 photos of a bug and walk/run away very happy.

Your top 3 fave Instagrammers?

  • @tanaka_tatsuya creates miniature worlds using household items and tiny little figures. I just want to shrink myself and live in his world.
  • @alozor lives in the same city as me, but when I see his photos, I always think “Where in San Diego is this??” “I’ve been living here for fifteen years, how come I’ve never seen this??”. He also knows when and where to catch the best California sunset.
  • @movable takes us behind the streets of Shanghai. He knows how to make grungy post-apocalyptic street alleys look so elegant.

What are your top 3 macro things to shoot?

I love sharing photos of the little things in nature that people don’t usually pay attention to. Photographers tend to go for the most colorful flower.

I want to show people that beauty can be found in the most mundane. My favorite subjects:

  1. Little seedlings and sprouts
  2. Dry petal curls
  3. Mushrooms- there’s something magical about them

Your advice for aspiring macro photographers.

beforeDon’t be discouraged if your first few photos come out blurry.

Everything in life takes practice. 

If you want to take photos of flying/crawling/hopping bugs, experiment with different camera apps that have fast shutter speeds. 

Have patience. A lot of it! I promise it will yield rewarding results.

So like, any extra editing tips?

beforeI would suggest to try as much possible to keep the tones of your photos consistent.

It makes for a pretty and attractive gallery. If you like using filters, use photo editing apps such as “Vintique” that let you adjust the settings of each filter — that way you can still make a style of “your own” even when you’re using pre-set filters.

Your top 3 places to shoot macro photos.

beforeIf I want to take photos of mushrooms, usually go to the park early in the morning before sunrise.

I also love going to local nurseries because they have a wide variety of flowers, plants, and trees on display.

The best thing about living in California is that there is green EVERYWHERE you go, all year round. If you’re ever in San Diego and you see a girl with an iPhone out in public on her elbows and knees, it’s probably me.

How do you get out of a creativity rut?

beforeI look at photos of my favorite photographers — Instagram, Flickr, online portfolios, photography books.

I also love watching sci-fi and japanese animation. Hayao Miyazaki is definitely the inspiration behind my whimsical photographs of moss forests and toadstools.
