30 September, 2012 – The Digital Negative Book

16 Oct

Jeff Schewe has just published an important new book titled The Digital Negative. I have created a brief review (more like a plug) for my friend’s book. But, my bias aside, it really is that good, and it should find its way to your bookshelf tout suite.

Sony A99

I have started field testing the brand new Sony A99 full-frame 24MP camera. I will be shooting with it in Algonquin Park next week, and expect to have my review available some time the week after.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation
 level high.  Wow!"

4 September, 2012 – Medium Format Image Quality from a sub-$1k Compact?

06 Sep

Is the headline above hyperbole, or am I just laying out some troll bait? Neither actually. That’s why I put a question mark after it.

The new Sigma DP2 Merrill is destined to be one of the most polarizing cameras in a while. It is not without its flaws (none terribly serious if IQ is your primary need), but it also produces some of the highest resolution images that I’ve seen short of a top-of-the-line DSLR with a 1st rate prime lens attached, or from a medium format back.

What have I been smoking? Read my Sigma DP2 Merrill review and find out.

NYC Workshop at SUN Studios September 8th and 9th!

22 Jul

Who wants another workshop? How about having one during one of the best times in NYC….NYC Fall Fashion Week? Well, you got it! On September 8th and September 9th, which is a Saturday and Sunday, I will be teaching another famous Fashion Photography Workshop at the fabulous SUN Studios located in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. The format for Saturday’s class is pretty much going to stay the same forever: Beauty Lighting Workshop in the morning, Fashion Lighting Workshop in the afternoon. Sunday however we have the special honor of having our original retouching megastar David Skyler joining us again after a 2 year break! So on Sunday mornings, we will all meet again at SUN Studios and make sure to bring your Wacom Tablet and a thirst for learning as much information as you can possibly cram in your head because David is going to show you how to retouch for beauty and fashion and your work will never look the same! After retouching we jump right into the business segment where I will go through marketing your work and budgeting your jobs. You can read more about the workshop and order tickets directly HERE. I just want to add this: The last two workshops have been so rewarding for me and SO much fun. I have to say, too, that the students attending both my LA workshop in April and my Berlin workshop in June were absolutely wonderful! I have started to form lasting friendships with a few of the students, keeping in touch quite often. I think that’s the most rewarding part of teaching the workshops: I get to meet you awesome people and watch you guys grow leaps and bounds just by learning a few lighting and retouching tricks! And not only do I form lasting friendships, the students form them with each other as well. So come join us September 6th and 7th in one of the most exciting cities in the world, New York City! See you there!!

browserFruits September 2011 #2

26 Sep

TimesCast – September 24, 2010

13 May

A photographer’s view of the allied offensive in Southern Afghanistan and a house so well insulated it doesn’t need a furnace. Related Link: nyti.ms
Video Rating: 5 / 5

Detective Kim (Park Yong-woo) is a relaxed and lazy cop, who approaches things his way and always in a calm manner. His cynicism doesn’t go well with his colleagues, but that’s nothing he is concerned about. A series of murders on little girls who are all from the same orphanage, is his sole focus of interest. A suspect is soon found: photographer Ryoo Jeong-ho (Kim Sang-kyung). Kim already met Ryoo on several occasions and even though the photographer prevented two crimes from happening, something just seems to be odd about him… Jeong-ho, who has to struggle with his past, has to take care of little Soo-yeon (Han Bo-bae) for his uncle. Kim finds out, that Soo-yeon grew up in the same orphanage as all the other victims, and so he keeps a close eye on her. However, soon he discovers that the photographer can’t be the culprit. Moreover, Detective Kim finds out that Jeong-ho seems to be able to see things others miss. The former “enemies” work together to protect little Soo-yeon, with whom Jeong-ho meanwhile shares a close father-daughter relationship, despite his initial emotionlessness towards her. But can the them of Kim and Ryoo catch the killer before he strikes again?

2 September, 2010 – Canon Expo 2010 New York

30 Oct

Once every five years Canon holds a technology exposition. The latest took place in New York City, opening yesterday, September 1st.

This event is for Canon’s customers and partners (as well as selected media), and includes business, education and government participants. Attendance is by invitation only.

I spent the day at the show, and while there was only one new product announced – the Canon XF100 and XF105 video cameras, there was an impressive array of expo type future products on display.

I have just posted a brief overview of the show and also a 2 minute video that tries to give a taste of what it was like.

6 September, 2010 – 40 Megapixel Pentax 645D First Look Report & Video

30 Oct

The Pentax 645D has been a long time coming. But this brand new 40 Megapixel 645 camera is now shipping in Japan and should start to become available in the rest of the world within the next few months.

Recently LuLa corespondent Nick Devlin spent several hours closely examining the camera with Pentax Canada’s Bill Gouge, while Michael Reichmann filmed their discussion.

Nick’s First Look Report is now online, as well as a 15 minute long video interview with Bill.

"Awesome video presentation.

I have learnt so much more after looking through this on the weekend.  The tip about pushing blacks and fill light in the Basic Module was worth the price alone.  My images of a recent trip to the Australian Outback are popping and punching with delight!

Thanks Michael and Jeff – I really appreciate you taking the considerable time to share your in-depth knowledge and insights."
