10 September, 2010 – The Leica M8 and Infra-Red Photography

30 Oct

If you were paying attention a few years ago (and maybe even if you weren’t) it was hard to not have heard about the Leica M8’s excessive infra-red sensitivity. Owners were provided with free IR blocking filters by Leica, and that was about that – with the subsequent Leica M9 pretty much relegating the issue to a historical footnote.

But there are some people who enjoy actually doing infra-red photography, and one of them is Harold M. Merklinger, a scientist, author and a regular contributor to this site. His newest tutorial, The Leica M8 and Infra-Red Photography is now online.

"Awesome video presentation.

I have learnt so much more after looking through this on the weekend.  The tip about pushing blacks and fill light in the Basic Module was worth the price alone.  My images of a recent trip to the Australian Outback are popping and punching with delight!

Thanks Michael and Jeff – I really appreciate you taking the considerable time to share your in-depth knowledge and insights."

Over the past several years new software options have become available for converting RGB images into Black and White.

One of the most versatile programs on the market for doing this is NIK Silver EFEX Pro. It has developed an avid user base, including our regular contributor, Mark Segal, who today takes us through the full preparation of an image to demonstrate key aspects of the program’s creative possibilities.

20 September, 2010 – Photography, Rain or Shine

17 Oct

Is the weather rotten? Raining? Snowing? Too hot? Too cold? A good day to stay in bed and read LuLa on your iPad?

Fugedaboutit. Get up, grab your camera and get outside. That’s the lesson learned by many photographers over the years. Get outside your comfort zone. Push yourself. You may come home at the end of the day, cold and wet, and possibly without a single worthwhile shot. Or you might have captured something wonderful.

You can read more on this thought by Contributor Mark Dubovoy in his latest essay – Photography, Rain or Shine.

Speaking of Mark, he is now on his way to Germany for this week’s bi-annual Photokina show. Mark will be reporting regularly throughout the week on the major product announcements as well as many of the more obscure ones that we know will interest LuLa readers.

22 September, 2010 – The Next Chapter in Photographic Lighting

16 Oct

For professional photographers few tools are as important as lighting equipment. From tungsten to electronic flash, even HMI, little has fundamentally changed over the years and even decades.

But now there’s a new kid on the block – LED lighting. One of the pioneers of LED photographic lighting technology is Scott Geffert, and today he provides us with an exclusive essay on the history of lighting equipment, and what we can expect from LEDs in The Next Chapter in Photographic Lighting.

28 September, 2010 – Yosemite Sanctuary

16 Oct

One of the most respected landscape photographers working in America today is William Neill, who is becoming a new regular contributor to this site.

His latest essay is titled Yosemite Sanctuary. Yosemite is an icon of the American West, and many of us have photographed there over the years, but it has been home to Bill for the past 30+ years.

24 September, 2010 – Review of Sony’s NEX Firmware Update

26 Sep

When the Sony NEX 3 and NEX 5 started to ship a few months ago Sony was taken to task, by both reviewers and end users for its poor user interface. At the time I called the menu design "a dog’s breakfast".

But now, just three months later, Sony has announced a firmware update and plans to make it available by mid-October.

I have been testing this new firmware for the past few days, and my report on what it does and how well it addresses the failings of the original design is now online in my exclusive Sony NEX Firmware Update Review.
