RED unveils Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor with 17+ stops of dynamic range

RED has just announced its new Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor for Weapon cameras. The device features a 35.4MP 40.96mm x 21.60mm sensor and is able to record at a full 8K/60fps resolution. RED explains that the Monstro 8K VV replaces its existing DRAGON 8K VV sensor, and that anyone who has ordered the DRAGON 8K VV will be offered the Monstro as of October 5th.

The Monstro 8K VV sensor has full support for RED’s IPP2 image processing pipeline, as well as an “unprecedented dynamic range [of 17+ stops] and breathtaking color accuracy,” according to RED President Jarred Land. When coupled with the Weapon 8K VV, the device can simultaneously record Redcode RAW and either Avid DNxHD/HR or Apple ProRes, likewise offering data speeds up to 300MB/s. Existing carbon fiber Weapon customers have the option of upgrading for $ 29,500, while the new Weapon with the full-frame Monstro sensor is priced at $ 79,500. New orders for the device will start shipping to customers in early 2018.

RED ANNOUNCES THE NEW MONSTRO 8K VV

Today RED announced a new cinematic Full Frame sensor for WEAPON cameras, MONSTRO™ 8K VV. MONSTRO is an evolutionary step beyond the RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor with improvements in image quality, including dynamic range and shadow detail.

This new camera and sensor combination, WEAPON 8K VV, offers Full Frame lens coverage, captures 8K full format motion at up to 60 fps, produces ultra-detailed 35.4 megapixel stills, and delivers incredibly fast data speeds of up to 300 MB/s. Like all of RED’s DSMC2 cameras, WEAPON shoots simultaneous REDCODE RAWand Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR recording and adheres to RED’s dedication to OBSOLESCENCEOBSOLETE—a core operating principle that allows current RED owners to upgrade their technology as innovations are unveiled as well as move between camera systems without having to purchase all new gear.

The new WEAPON will be priced at $ 79,500 (for the camera BRAIN) with upgrades for carbon fiber WEAPONcustomers available for $ 29,500. MONSTRO 8K VV will replace the current RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor in RED’s lineup, and customers that had previously placed an order for a RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor will be offered this new sensor beginning today. New orders will start being fulfilled in early 2018.

RED has also announced a comprehensive service offering for WEAPON carbon fiber camera owners called REDARMOR-W. RED ARMOR-W offers enhanced and extended protection beyond basic RED ARMOR, and also includes one sensor swap each year.

“‘Good’ has never been ‘good enough’ for RED,” says Land. “We put ourselves in the shoes of our customers and see how we can improve how we can support them. RED ARMOR-W builds upon the foundation of our original extended warranty program and includes giving customers the ability to move between sensors based upon their shooting needs.”

Additionally, RED’s enhanced image processing pipeline (IPP2) is now available in-camera for all cameras with HELIUM and MONSTRO sensors through today’s v7.0 release firmware update. IPP2 offers a completely overhauled workflow experience, featuring enhancements such as smoother highlight roll-off, better management of challenging colors, an improved demosaicing algorithm, and more.

Face ID sensor slowdown could lead to iPhone X shortages and shipment delays

Most iPhone launches involve some sort of shortage because demand frequently outstrips supply, but if you’re excited about Apple’s new flagship iPhone X and the impressive camera equipment inside, the news is worse than usual. According to both the Wall Street Journal and Fast Company, manufacturing difficulties surrounding the phone’s Face ID hardware could lead to serious shortages and shipment delays come November 3rd.

Many photographers and photo enthusiasts are very excited about Apple’s newest smartphones. According to Apple’s keynote, both the iPhone 8/Plus and iPhone X boast bigger image sensors, and the iPhone X in particular features OIS on both the wide angle and telephoto lenses built into the back of the phone.

Add to that some image processor advances and a seriously powerful new video encoder that Apple built into the A11 chip, and there’s good reason to be impressed by the performance of the iPhone 8 Plus so far, and expect even better performance out of the iPhone X.

But even if you pre-order your iPhone X on October 27th, the day the phone goes up on Apple’s website, this Face ID manufacturing snafu could mean availability is severely limited for months. Similar manufacturing issues with the iPhone 7 Plus dual camera module kept that phone in short supply well into December.

Bottom line: if you’re holding out on buying the iPhone 8/Plus in favor of the iPhone X, don’t be surprised if your wait extends well past November 3rd.

Report: Samsung is developing a 1,000fps mobile image sensor

According to sources who spoke to Korean publication ETNews, Samsung is planning to kick its mobile camera technology up a notch with a 1,000fps smartphone camera sensor that will compete directly with Sony’s similar sensor. This technology is called a “3-layered image sensor,” and Samsung has reportedly ordered special equipment necessary to start producing the hardware in November. Smartphones featuring this technology, like the Sony Xperia XZ, can record super-slow-motion video.

ETNews, which has a good track record in relation to Samsung leaks, claims that this 3-layered image sensor is comprised of TSV stacking technology alongside a DRAM chip and system semiconductor. Pilot production of the image sensors will start in October, the sources claim, followed by mass production in November. By comparison, Samsung currently uses 2-layered image sensors in its newest flagship smartphones.

It is the DRAM chip for temporary data storage that will enable the mobile image technology to capture at 1,000fps, and as we mentioned earlier, Samsung won’t be the first company to develop this technology for mobile devices. Sony was the first to bring this 3-layered image sensor tech to commercial devices, though the sources say Samsung will use TSV stacking rather than thermal compression to avoid the costs that come with licensing other companies’ patents.

Questions remain about which Samsung smartphones will receive the new 3-layered image sensors. Assuming mass production does start this November, it is reasonable to assume we’ll see the sensors implemented into the next batch of Galaxy smartphones the company will unveil in 2018.

Fujifilm X-E3 offers 24MP sensor and extensive touch control

Fujifilm has announced the X-E3, sporting a 24.3MP X-Trans sensor and 4K video capture. It updates the X-E2S, which was itself a fairly minor update to the X-E2, so brings a number of welcome upgrades.

The X-E3 borrows much of its hardware from the X-T20, including a 325-point AF system with a handy new AF Area All option that activates various modes as the AF point size is changed. The camera also uses and updated subject tracking algorithm that claims better success tracking smaller and faster objects. Its predecessor’s built-in flash has been omitted, but an EF-X8 accessory flash is included in the box.

Video recording at 4K/30p is offered, taken by the full width of the sensor. Full 1080 HD can be had at up to 60p. The X-E3 continues to offer Wi-Fi, and adds the option for a constant Bluetooth low energy connection to a smartphone.

The X-E2S’s fixed 3″ 1.04M-dot LCD has been upgraded to a (still non-articulated) touchscreen in the X-E3, and a new feature called Touch Function puts additional customizable touch controls at the user’s fingertips. The camera’s rear control panel loses the directional navigation buttons in favor of touch control, but gains an AF joystick.

The Fujifilm X-E3 is expected to arrive in September in three kit configurations: body-only for $ 900, with 18-55mm for $ 1300, or with 23mm F2 R WR for $ 1150.

Also announced today is the new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens, the first 1.0x magnification mid-telephoto macro lens in the X Series lineup of interchangeable lenses. The lens features a focal length equivalent to 122mm (in the 35mm format) and a maximum aperture of F2.8 for beautiful bokeh.

Exceptional Autofocus Tracking and High-Speed Response
The FUJIFILM X-E3 features a large phase detection autofocus (AF) area and provides photographers with enhanced tracking performance for moving subjects. Equipped with a newly developed image recognition algorithm, the X-E3 is able to track moving subjects half the size, or moving twice as fast as previous models.

The X-E3 supports both Full HD and 4K video recording. Videos can be shot with Film Simulations in-camera to easily produce creative high-resolution footage.

The compact and lightweight X-E3 is perfect for quick snapshots, boasting high-speed response times including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds and autofocus speed as fast as 0.06 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity and Intuitive Touchscreen Control
The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth® low energy wireless communication. Providing photographers with enhanced connectivity, this feature offers the ability to pair the camera with a smartphone or tablet for easy transfer of pictures via the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote application.

The X-E3 features a high-resolution 3.0 inch 1.04M-dot static touchscreen LCD monitor to provide users with easy, intuitive operations in a variety of shooting and playback modes. When shooting with the X-E3, the touchscreen can be used to select the focus area, or focus on a specific point before taking a picture. For playback, users can enjoy the ability to swipe or scroll through images, double-tap to enlarge, drag an image once enlarged, along with pinch-out and pinch-in sizing. A new Touch Function feature will also be available on the X-E3, enabling users to create customized camera functions by swiping left, right, up and down on the touchscreen panel.

Ultra-Compact and Lightweight Body for Portability and Practicality
Making it the perfect companion for everyday shooting and travel photography, the new FUJIFILM X-E3 is the most compact and lightweight model with a viewfinder within the X Series interchangeable lens camera range. The X-E3 also features a Focus Lever positioned on the rear side of the camera that allows photographers to use joystick-type operations in eight directions to easily select a focus area.

The top plate features two precision-milled aluminum dials, giving the camera a premium feel and allowing users to easily adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation while maintaining focus on taking a picture. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops. The new X-E3 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera can automatically select the optimum settings for a given scene.

Updated X Mount Lens Roadmap Unveiled

Canon launches EOS M100 with 24MP sensor and Dual Pixel AF

Canon has announced the successor to its EOS M10 with the EOS M100, bringing a 24.2MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus to the entry-level mirrorless range for the first time. A DIGIC 7 processor brings other improvements like a boost from 1080/30p to 1080/60p video capture and 4 fps burst shooting with continuous AF (6 fps with single AF) compared to the M10’s 2.2 fps with C-AF.

The Canon EOS M100 maintains its predecessor’s built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, tilting 3″ 1.03M-dot touchscreen, and pop-up flash. Bluetooth connectivity is also available, allowing for a constant connection between camera and mobile device. Canon says it’s the slimmest and lightest of its M-series offerings yet, and touts a newly designed touch interface for its beginner-friendly Creative Assist mode.

The Canon M100 will be available in black or white, and is expected to ship in October for $ 600 with 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, or $ 950 with 15-45mm and 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM.

Nikon appears to have pulled out all the stops for its D850, announced today. It combines high resolution and speed: a full-frame 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor with no low pass filter capable of full resolution 7 fps bursts with AF/AE (boosted to 9 fps when paired with the optional MB-D18 battery grip and EN-EL18a/b battery). The D850 also offers the D5’s excellent 153-point AF system, as well as a native ISO range of 64-25,600 (expandable to 32 or up to 102,400).

The D850 also improves on the D810’s video offerings with the inclusion of full-frame 4K 24/25/30p capture. Focus peaking (1080p-only) and zebra stripes are provided for videographers, as well as uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit 4K HDMI output and microphone/headphone inputs.

Like the D500, the D850 offers a tilting 3.2″ 2.36M-dot touchscreen. The camera includes dual card slots: one XQD, one SD. SnapBridge provides built-in connectivity via Nikon’s mobile app, but for more flexible wireless support you’ll have to add a Wi-Fi adapter. The D850’s magnesium alloy body is weather sealed, and illuminated controls provide better visibility in dark situations.

Sony Kumamoto sensor factory earthquake: first public footage

Sony Kumamoto sensor factory: first public footage of the 2016 earthquake

On April 16, 2016, disaster struck in Kumamoto in the Kyushu region of Japan. A series of earthquakes, including an unprecedented 7.0 mainshock struck beneath Kumamoto City where Sony’s sensor factory resides. The factory itself was a mere 20 kilometers from the earthquake’s epicenter. A foreshock (warning) of magnitude 6.2 came approximately two days earlier, which gave the factory time to evacuate; however, the damage to the carefully built, precision controlled and automated factory with clean rooms was devastating. Not to mention the impact on the lives of those in the region…

During a recent trip to the repaired Kumamoto factory, DPReview was afforded an inside look at the facility and a chance to meet the very people that keep one of the world’s largest sources of imaging sensors operational. We watched a video that showed the extent of the damages and repair efforts. Combined with a better of understanding of how the facility operates, we were able to appreciate just how extensive the destruction and repair processes were. We’ll get to that in the following slides, but have a look above at the public’s first look of footage from the facility during the earthquake, and the massive repair efforts that followed.

Massive impact

Before we dive more into the impact on Sony’s sensor factory itself, we’d be remiss to not mention the impact on the region. The foreshock and mainshock together claimed more than 50 lives, injured 3,000 others, forced more than 44,000 people to evacuate from their homes and left over 180,000 people seeking shelter in the days after the earthquake. The entire city of Kumamoto was left without water, flights were grounded, as was rail service due to a derailed train. A thousand buildings had been seriously damaged either directly by the earthquake or due to the resulting fires and landslides, and an entire hospital had to be evacuated due to the building being knocked off its foundation.

More than 140 aftershocks were registered within just two days. The estimated economic costs due to the earthquake are estimated to be up to $ 7.5 billion USD. Although you can’t quite appreciate it in this image, the sensor factory is surrounded by mountainous hills resulting from a tectonic line housing many active faults. Earthquakes of some magnitude or another are common to the area. In the following days we’ll have more pictures of the area, as we traveled extensively within the Kyushu region.

Many sections of the 40,000 square meter facility were severely damaged. There were continued aftershocks for many days that made it difficult to even re-enter and start repairs. In fact, the region is used to After it was deemed safe to enter, the damage was assessed. It was extensive. Heavy duty H-beams for structural support buckled, causing walls and ceilings to collapse. Here is an image showing the ceiling of the clean room ripped open, exposing the sky above. ‘Now we were speechless’ said the camera crew filming the damage.

And those ceilings aren’t your typical roofs over your head: they house tracks that carry many of the parts from machine to machine in the automated processes of taking a silicon wafer and generating active sensors from them. Essentially, many parts of the sensor development process were disrupted.

Delicate, precision machinery: shattered

The extensive damage to the clean room meant that many of the machines automatically processing silicon wafers to generate sensors* were destroyed, including the many wafers each machine contained. Throughout the video you’ll see shattered silicon – at various stages of the silicon-to-sensor process – scattered everywhere. Ultimately many functional machines were salvaged, removed, and brought back after the clean room was reconstructed, but many were deemed too damaged to ever function again.

All hands on deck

The sensor factory in Kumamoto produces most sensors Sony manufactures not just for their own cameras, but for other manufacturers as well, including those in the smartphone, security camera, webcam, automotive, medical and other imaging-related industries. The disruption of this facility had no small impact: consider that by July 2017, Sony has sold 7.2 billion sensors worldwide.

Therefore, it was imperative to restore operations to normal as soon as possible. And that’s why Sony factory members themselves, including executive ones, went to work right away restoring the factory. There are nearly 2700 employees at this factor, and it was all hands on deck.

A spirit of personal responsibility and dedication

Imagine an earthquake at your corporate office that ruined much of your workspace. Would you expect to return to clean up and help repair the damage yourself? That’s what the Kumamoto employees did. The spirit is really remarkable when you stop to consider that most of us here in the States would expect our companies to simply ‘deal with it’. Here is a factory employee vacuuming up thousands of fragments of broken silicon wafers.

Operations resumed ahead of schedule

The factories worked with such diligence and dedication that they restored operations ahead of schedule. They did this whilst putting in place precautions that would lower the lead time from 3.5 months to 2 months were this sort of disaster to happen in the future. These measures included stronger piping as well as the engineering of self-stop systems that halt precision processes when shake is detected. These systems respond in particular to P-waves, the first of two major elastic seismic waves to arrive at a seismograph during an earthquake.

A human story of courage, dedication and ultimate success

And so the story ends on a happy note. Here is an image of the team of employees that worked countless hours to restore the Kumamoto facility to normal operations. We can only imagine the dedication involved, and how heartening it was to work together to bring back to life such an important part of the company. It’s a story of not just company dedication and culture, but a human one of working together to achieve an honorable goal.

Sony 1000 fps sensor gives high-speed vision to industrial robots

Sony is the global market leader in the image sensor field, producing imager chips not only for cameras and smartphones but also for industrial applications. Now, one of the features that we first saw in a Sony smartphone camera has made its way into a newly announced sensor meant for use with robots in manufacturing.

The Sony 1/3.02″ IMX382 sensor allows industrial robots to detect and track objects at 1,000 frames per second, which could result in autonomous machines that can react to an object’s movements or other changes in their environment in real time.

The sensor not only captures images at high speed, it’s also capable of processing them and sending information to the machine it is attached—no computer or other additional processing unit is required. In the video below, you can see how the technology is used to identify different currencies at high speed, track several objects at the same time and visually inspect items without a need to slow-down a conveyor belt or production line.

The Sony IMX382 will be available to potential customers very soon, with sample shipping envisaged for October 2017.

Nikon patents 35mm F2.0 lens for camera with curved full frame sensor

Nikon’s never-released DL18-50. Did Nikon abandon this series of 1-inch sensor compacts in order to focus on creating a full-frame mirrorless camera?

A new Nikon lens patent is causing quite a stir in the photo world today, but it’s not because of the lens itself. Instead, the patent has people excited because it describes a lens that is made for a curved full-frame sensor, possibly inside a mirrorless camera.

The latter bit is pure speculation—as Nikon Rumors points out, “the patent does not provide sufficient technical information to determine if this is a mirrorless or a DSLR lens,” especially since Nikon has patented curved sensors in the past—but the 35mm F2.0 lens described is definitely made to work with a full-frame curved sensor.

It’s possible this camera could be a fixed-lens system, bypassing the need to design multiple lenses or figure out how to make zoom lenses work on a curved sensor. For that matter, it’s also possible this design never makes it to market. But the fact that Nikon is dabbling in patents here, spending R&D time and money on some real innovation, is at least mildly heartening.

With multiple curved sensor patents and prototypes out in the wild, the correct question now seems to be “when” rather than “if” this technology will make it to the general public. Well, “when” and “who will get there first?”

Sony patents 400mm F2.8 lens for a curved medium format sensor

It’s a great day for innovative patent news. Earlier today, we told you about a Nikon patent for a lens that was designed to work with a full-frame curved sensor camera. But that might not be the most innovative curved sensor patent you’ll hear about today. That title goes to Sony, and their 400mm F2.8 lens designed for a curved medium format sensor.

Sony Alpha Rumors first spotted the Japanese patent, which describes a lens designed for a curved 645 size sensor—that’s bigger than the sensors found in the Fuji GFX-50s and Hasselblad X1D-50c. The lens is “single focus” and “can be used as an interchangeable lens” reads the translated patent. It goes on to say that, thanks to the curved sensor design “High MTF can be obtained.”

Here’s are a couple of diagrams, in case you’re curious and know a thing or two about optical design. The lens seems exceptionally simple in design, possibly thanks to the benefits of a curved sensor:

As with all patents, there’s plenty of reason to doubt this exact diagram will materialize into a real product; however, it does mean Sony is thinking about medium format and curved sensors, and that should have anybody interested in digital camera innovations very excited.

Like we said earlier today, it’s not so much “will” someone bring this tech to photographers, but “when” and “who will get there first?” May the most innovative company win.
