Accessory review: Vanguard Heralder 51T Rolling Backpack

03 Jun

Vanguard-Heralder-4.jpg

The Vanguard Heralder 51T combines the conveniences of a backpack with the travel-friendliness of a rolling case. At almost ten pounds it’s no day bag, but it is equipped with loads of compartments and pockets, a large removable interior tray, tripod sling, laptop storage and a rain cover. Is it the best of both worlds, or would you be better off with a dedicated backpack or roller? Read our review

Rolling Stop: 10 Abandoned Roller Skating Rinks

23 Feb

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

These abandoned roller skating rinks once saw social interaction mesh seamlessly with healthful recreation backed by a toe-tapping musical soundtrack.

Faded Starlight

Pretty much all that remains of the former Starlight Roller Skating Rink and outdoor dance hall are the bandshell, ticket booth and concrete outdoor “dance floor”. Located between Toquerville and Pintura just off the old Cedar City highway (now I-15), the Starlight was built in the early 1940′s as an open-air dance hall and/or roller skating rink, the latter activity taking precedence as the Big Band era closed.

According to the oldest resident of Pintura (likely a former patron), the Starlight Roller Skating Rink was abandoned in 1953 as the Korean War was drawing to a close. Credit Utah’s arid climate for preserving the facility’s remnants and credit Flickr user Arbyreed for these spectacular photos taken in February of 2010.

Alberta Blues

Who could imagine a roller skating rink wouldn’t be able to thrive in Calgary, Alberta? Oh, just about everyone: this is CANADA, a place where real skating is done with ice skates and nobody pays for the privilege… during Calgary’s long cold winter, at least. Props to Flickr user Michael Oliver for the disturbing yet delightful image above.

A View To A Bushkill

Bushkill Park had a good run – the Easton, PA-area amusement park was open from 1902 through 2004 – but severe flood damage inflicted by Hurricanes Ivan and Wilma caused the storied park and its signature roller rink to close pending a massive renovation nobody thinks will actually occur. Almost a decade after the worst flooding in a century, Bushkill Park remains stubbornly comatose.

If Bushkill Park’s owners need funds to jump start the clean-up they might try selling off some of the roller rink’s massive inventory of skates before they rot away. Check out this video from TheUnknownCameraman to virtually experience exploring the post-apocalyptic rink.

Beaten Down In Eatontown

The former Eatontown Roller Rink in Eatontown, New Jersey closed in 2005 and has been quietly deteriorating ever since. Well, not exactly EVER… on February 19th of 2009, high winds caused part of the building’s roof and side walls to collapse. The Eatontown Roller Rink’s rather sudden demise may have been a blessing for its owner, who was planning to demolish the moldering roller rink anyway. Now it won’t take quite so long.

Rare photos of Rolling Stones emerge from estate sale

17 Nov

Mick_Jagger_Untitled_65.jpg

Photos of the Rolling Stones are not hard to find, but the majority of images from the height of the band’s career consist of on-stage performances and posed publicity shots. That’s why a stack of photos uncovered at a Southern California estate sale have attracted a lot of attention recently. See gallery

Rolling Hills Near Morro Bay, California

Rolling Hills Near Morro Bay, California

Golden light falls on rolling hills near Morro Bay, California

Having just returned from central California where the grass has turned golden brown, I thought it might be nice to take a moment to go back in time a few months and revisit the views while it was green. Pictured in late afternoon light are the rolling hills near Morro Bay, California.   If you look carefully you can make out the view of the monstrous Morrow Rock, a 581-foot volcanic plug, in the distance. As always I’m awed and inspired by California’s diverse geology.

Wheel House: Circular Hobo Home is a Rolling Circus Marvel

22 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

rolling mobile home

In this strange circus performance piece, two travelers turn architectural conventions on end, moving an offbeat nomadic home through a comedic narrative via carefully choreographic actions. A bit of theater-to-go, The Wheelhouse features careworn gypsies, and revolves around homeless living but is bolstered by conceptual architecture and compelling acrobatics.

rolling circular circus act

Per the video above and images below, this quite dynamic acting duo from the Acrojou Circus Theatre have taken their show quite literally on the road – audience members have to walk or ride alongside their curious portable stage, consisting of domestic essentials packed into a portable circle.

rolling acrobatic performance art

Doors, windows, furnishings and fixtures are all affixed to the inside of this unbalanced blend of off-kilter architecture and vertigo-inducing set design. Their half-hour performance consists of walking, sitting and laying down inside the circular structure as it winds its way down streets and sidewalks.

rolling architecture circle concept

A hidden sound system provides the soundtrack for the piece, and the set itself can be deconstructed into three pieces – that bit is perhaps too bad: it would be neat were the rolling architecture a part of their traveling circus caravan.

Rolling Clouds over San Francisco (Time-lapse)

07 Oct

One of the best places to take in the view of downtown San Francisco is Twin Peaks. Situated in the heart of San Francisco on a great day (like this one) you can see clear across the bay. I consider myself lucky as I live rather close to this great look out spot, but I don’t enjoy the view as often as I should. On the day I shot this time-lapse I opted to spend my lunch break here. It was time very well spent even if a little windy.

One last thing if you’re in San Francisco this weekend its Fleet Week and that means the Blue Angels will be flying over head. Be sure to check out my article 10 Essential Tips To Get Great Blue Angels Photos if you’re planning to photograph them this weekend..
