Apple reveals new iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard with trackpad, hinge

Apple has unveiled its latest iPad Pro model. The tablet, as recent leaks first revealed, is joined by a new backlit Magic Keyboard with a built-in trackpad. Unlike the Smart Folio keyboard, the new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro has a floating hinge design, offering users a more familiar laptop-like experience.

The iPad gained support for trackpads in iPadOS 13.4, according to Apple, finally giving users the experience they’ve been requesting for years. With the trackpad and hinge on the Magic Keyboard, iPad Pro owners can rapidly toggle from touch and gesture control to more traditional keyboard and trackpad control. The new option enables the iPad Pro to better function as a laptop replacement for owners who are tired of carrying both, but who grow weary of repeatedly lifting their arm to tap and swipe on the display.

Apple has repeatedly presented the iPad Pro as a highly capable device that could, for many consumers, serve as a laptop replacement. The lack of mouse support was the device’s biggest stumbling block in this regard, however — even a top Apple executive had acknowledged that having to use a touch screen in place of a trackpad was ‘a pretty fatiguing thing to do.’

Apple says that it ‘completely reimagined’ trackpad use for the iPad rather than copying it straight from macOS. ‘As users move their fingers across the trackpad, the pointer elegantly transforms to highlight user interface elements,’ the company explained in its announcement today. The trackpad includes support for Multi-Touch gestures, as well, eliminating the need for users to lift their hands to touch the display.

The new keyboard is joined by an updated iPad Pro model that features a more powerful A12Z Bionic chip with an eight-core GPU. Apple says its new hardware features ‘enhanced’ thermal architecture alongside tuned performance controllers and the company’s Neural Engine. Despite the performance boost, the new iPad Pro features up to 10 hours of battery life.

Other iPad Pro features include gigabit-class LTE connectivity, faster WiFi, an edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display with 120Hz refresh rate and 11in / 12.9in size options. The screen boasts P3 color support, the True Tone color management system and an anti-reflective coating. Apple has also packed a dual rear camera system into the new iPad Pro with 12MP Wide and 10MP Ultra Wide cameras; they’re joined by ‘studio-quality’ microphones and a LiDAR Scanner for what Apple says will be ‘a whole new class of AR experiences.’

In addition to the new iPad Pro and keyboard, Apple has also revealed an updated MacBook Air with double the storage and faster performance, as well as a new Magic Keyboard — the same one introduced on the 16in MacBook Pro. The new keyboard has a classic inverted ‘T’ arrow key design, plus there’s a new scissor mechanism with 1mm of key travel.

Rounding out the hardware announcements is an updated Mac mini with double the storage, putting the standard configuration at 256GB rather than 128GB. The 11in iPad Pro starts at $ 799, the 12.9in iPad Pro at $ 999, the new MacBook Air at $ 999 and the updated Mac mini at $ 799.

Tokina reveals updated 2020 lens roadmap with new lenses for DSLR, mirrorless cameras

Tokina, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary and had planned to reveal this information at CP+, has announced its latest 2020 lens development roadmap, showing a number of new lenses it plans to release in 2020 for DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

The announcement, seen above, is split into four different sections, based on the lens mounts the forthcoming lenses are destined for. First up is the atx-i lineup for Canon EF- and Nikon F-mount camera systems. In addition to the previously-announced 11–16mm F2.8 CF and 100mm F2.8 CF Macro lenses, Tokina also teases an upcoming 11–20mm F2.8 CF lens due out in Summer 2020 for Canon and Nikon APS-C DSLR camera.

Moving onto Tokina’s atx-m series, the updated roadmap shows off three new APS-C lenses for Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount camera systems: a 23mm F1.4, 33mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.4. The E-mount version of these lenses (denoted by an ‘E’ after the lens name) are set for a Summer 2020 release, while the X-mount versions (denoted by an ‘X’ after the lens name) aren’t due out until Autumn 2020.

Tokina also highlights three atx-m series lenses for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. In addition to the 85mm F1.8 FE, which is currently available for $ 499 (Adorama, B&H), Tokina also highlights a 35mm F1.8 FE and 50mm F1.8 FE lens, both of which are due out in Autumn 2020.

It’s unconfirmed at this time, but it’s worth noting these lenses do bear a striking resemblance in looks and specs to a number of Viltrox lenses that have already been announced (and delayed).

Apple reveals the winners of the Shot on iPhone Night mode challenge

At the beginning of the year, Apple invited iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max users to share their best photos taken in Night mode. All 3 iPhone 11 models feature a Wide sensor with 100 percent Focus Pixels. As a result, Night mode automatically activates in low-light environments.

Thousands of photos were submitted from around the world. The winning photographers, selected from a panel of 10 judges, hail from China, India, Russia, and Spain. The judges, including Malin Fezehai, Tyler Mitchell, Sarah Lee, Alexvi Li, and Darren Soh shared their thoughts on what made the winning photos stand out.

Winning photos will be featured on apple.com, Apple’s official Instagram account which boasts 22.5 million followers, at select stores, on billboards around the world, and other third-party photo exhibitions.

Phil Schiller says: ‘Konstantin’s photo is a super-dramatic image shot with Night mode. It could be the opening shot of a great Cold War spy movie. It challenges us with intriguing questions — ‘Where is the driver? Where are they going? Why stop out here?’ A cool mist permeates the blue Russian hillside and snow-covered ground, framing the lonely vehicle with bright red lights that hint at an unknown danger.’
Brooks Kraft says: ‘A movie-like scene that leaves you curious about what happened in this snowy remote setting. Night mode captures the blue light exterior hue beautifully as well as the incandescent lighting inside the cab of the truck and the truck lighting — a wide variety of lighting.’

Mitsun Soni (Mumbai, Maharashtra, India), iPhone 11 Pro

Darren Soh says: ‘An amazingly well-balanced composition that throws so many questions back at the viewer — ‘Where is this? Who lives here?’ — and perhaps the most important — ‘Why is laundry hanging out to dry at night?’ As an architectural photographer, I am drawn by the image’s one point perspective that leads the viewer into the frame, right smack into the hanging pieces of clothing.’
Sarah Lee says: ‘I love this and feel it could only have been shot on Night mode. It is beautifully composed, uses symmetry very well, and without cliché to communicate a fascinating story about densely populated urban spaces and the way many people live. This work reminds me of Michael Wolf’s ‘Architecture of Density’ in its theme, but compositionally the photographer has their own take, which is really interesting.’

Tyler Mitchell says: ‘This one blows my mind. I have no idea where that deep rich red light is coming from on the tree. It almost feels like a UFO sitting above the tree, just out of frame. Absolutely beautiful composition as well.’
Arem Duplessis says: ‘The rich red color of the tree and ground gives this picture an otherworldly quality. Paired with the night sky, it feels like a still from a sci-fi film.’

Rubén P. Bescós (Pamplona, Navarra, Spain), iPhone 11 Pro Max

Location: Sierra del Perdón

Phil Schiller says: ‘Photography is the art of light, and Rubén’s photo magically uses light to bring this art installation in Spain to life. The color in this Night mode image is a captivating orange, beautifully framing the band of pilgrims in sharp silhouette. The crackly details on the foreground rocks add to the story of the long and difficult journey ahead for these pilgrims before they reach their holy site.’

Alexvi Li says: ‘Taking great advantage of Night mode with exposure setting, the photographer captured the silhouette of a group of people in the city light backdrop. The ground in the photo reveals beautiful texture when shooting against the light. The simple composition quickly draws viewers into a story, while delivering good image quality.’

Rustam Shagimordanov (Moscow, Russia), iPhone 11

Location: Hamnøy I Lofoten, Nordland, Norway

Kaiann Drance says: ‘A captivating shot of a winter village by the sea, which must feel cold, yet looks warm with the glow against the rocks and lights inside the red cabins, inviting a story about the people inside.’

Malin Fezehai says: ‘I love how the lights in the red cabins give a sense of warmth in the cold. The layers in the image create depth and give me a sense of cold and warmth at the same time. It’s a beautifully captured landscape image of a winter evening.’

Yu “Eric” Zhang (Beijing, China), iPhone 11 Pro Max

Jon McCormack says: ‘This image represents iPhone at its best. Capturing life as it happens, no matter what the light is! The sense of moment, intimacy and place in this image is very good. It really transports the viewer to being right there.’

Arem Duplessis says: ‘This picture has a very real quality to it. The rising steam, the silhouetted figures backlit from the lamp all align perfectly in this magical caught moment.’

A recent survey reveals wedding photographers spend only 4% of their time taking photos

A recent survey revealed wedding photographers spend roughly 4% of their time actually taking photos.

UK-based company Your Perfect Wedding Photographer recently conducted its fourth annual industry survey. Although more than 300 full-time wedding photographers participated in the survey, it’s important to remember that the findings reflect a small segment of local wedding photographers and the results may be more typical for a specific region rather than the industry as a whole. That said, there are a few interesting tidbits from the data.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • The average number of weddings captured a year is 28, down by 1 from 29 in 2018.
  • The average cost of a full day starting package is £1,590 ($ 2,063 USD), up by £30 from £1,560 ($ 2,023 USD) in 2018.
  • The average yearly marketing cost is £1,253 ($ 1,625 USD), down by £21 from £1,274 ($ 1,652 USD) in 2018.
  • 40% of Photographers use a Canon Camera, 31% Nikon, 22% Sony, 7% Fuji.
  • The average age of those surveyed is 39 years old, up 1 year from 38 in 2018.
  • 44% of respondents were women and 56% are men.
According to the survey, Instagram has become the leading social source for bookings – surpassing Facebook from last year.

Note that the above info only represents a fraction of the information revealed in the survey. Statistics on important items such as biggest expenses, average editing time, and percentage of wedding photographers that partake in online awards is also included.

Participants also shared their thoughts on this industry. ‘It’s getting more competitive with more people charging less. I would love for photographers to charge properly so the average moves from £1500. It has been this for so many years and hasn’t moved with inflation or other external costs increasing. My rate reflects my experience and the level of service but at a glance, it can be harder when someone is comparing primarily on price,’ laments one commenter.

On a more positive note, others elaborated on what they love about being a wedding photographer. ‘The wedding photography industry is more exciting than ever at the moment with amazing new talents shining through all the time. There is also a growing movement away from the staged, fake “traditional” wedding photography towards the documentary style, real and genuine moments that weddings are really all about. Artistic storytelling is becoming more mainstream and expected at last and not just a slogan on photographers’ websites,’ exclaimed another participant.

Instagram CEO reveals the simple reason the company doesn’t have an iPad app

Despite the popularity of both the social media platform and the gadget, Instagram still lacks an iPad app. This omission remains frustrating, particularly in light of the iPad Pro and its suitability as a laptop replacement for some photographers. In a recent Instagram story, the company’s CEO Adam Mosseri briefly discussed the topic, stating that Instagram wants to launch an iPad app.

The information surfaced in one of Mosseri’s Instagram stories; it was spied by The Verge editor Chris Welch who tweeted the details to his followers.

In addition to revealing that some Instagram users don’t see advertisements, Mosseri reportedly also said in the story that Instagram ‘would like to build an iPad app,’ but that ‘we only have so many people, and lots to do, and it hasn’t bubbled up as the next best thing to do yet.’

This, of course, has raised questions over whether an iPad app will ever be ‘the next best thing’ on Instagram’s list of priorities. The iPad’s 10th anniversary is in less than two months and device owners have been requesting a proper iPad app for years.

Tamron reveals it has three new, unannounced mirrorless lenses planned for 2020

Buried within Tamron’s full-year financial report was a little detail that hints at Tamron revealing three new, unannounced lenses for mirrorless cameras in 2020.

The new information can be seen in the above graphic within the presentation that shows Tamron has five models planned for 2020, two of which have already been announced: the 20mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras (Adorama, B&H) and a compact 70–180mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras that’s currently in development.

It’s unknown what the three new lenses will be, but Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting all three will be E-mount lenses.

Other details in the report include a statement claiming Tamron expects ‘the sales of own-brand [mirrorless lens] models is expected to increase the sales compare to the previous year’ and confirmation its 17–28mm F2.8 lens should no longer be backordered by the end of February.

MacOS beta reveals ‘Pro Mode’ code, teasing a high-performance mode for MacBook Pros

Apple may be preparing to release a new macOS feature called ‘Pro Mode,’ according to a recent report from 9to5Mac. Evidence of the feature was found nestled within macOS Catalina 10.15.3 beta code alongside strings of text. Based on the text, it seems ‘Pro Mode’ will be a manual feature that enables users to temporarily boost a Mac’s performance.

Apple releases beta versions of its macOS operating system for developers to test before the updates are made available to casual users. Teardowns of these updates may reveal the presence of unannounced features that are hidden in the code, the latest example being this newly detailed ‘Pro Mode.’

Strings of text listed as descriptions of the feature state that enabling Pro Mode may make apps ‘run faster, but battery life may decrease and fan noise may increase.’ As well, a string of text reveals that ‘fan speed limit [is] overridden’ when Pro Mode is active.

The report indicates that users may be able to turn Pro Mode on manually and that the system will automatically disable it by the next day in a way similar to the existing Do Not Disturb feature. The feature is expected to be made available on MacBook laptops, making it possible for users to temporarily boost performance while editing images, processing videos or other tasks with more demanding requirements.

SanDisk reveals 8TB SSD prototype and Ultra Dual Drive Luxe 1TB flash drive

SanDisk has introduced a sleek new flash drive that features an appealing metal body and a very practical dual-connector design. The new SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe thumb drive will arrive later this year, offering users a large storage capacity in a small form factor.

As its name suggests, the Luxe drive features both USB-C and USB-A connectors, making it possible to use the drive with the majority of newer smartphones, tablets and laptops on the market. In addition to its high level of durability due to the metal build, SanDisk’s new drive has a slot for attaching the device to a keychain or securing it within a bag using a lanyard.

According to Engadget, SanDisk will release this model toward the end of 2020; the price hasn’t been revealed at this time.

In addition to the upcoming flash drive, SanDisk also showcased a prototype portable SSD with a massive 8TB capacity capable of 20Gbps transfer speeds. According to Engadget, the drive is slightly larger than the SanDisk Extreme External SSDs, though it’s still small enough to stuff in a pocket.

Though it would be the highest capacity portable SSD if it were to come to market, it only exists as a prototype at this time. It’s unclear when SanDisk anticipates launching the product and how much it will cost, though it’s likely to be quite expensive. The company’s existing 2TB Extreme Portable SSD model costs $ 270, for comparison.

Lensrentals teardown reveals the inside of the ‘Strong like Bull’ Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens

Canon’s new RF 70-200mm lens is one of the most interesting lenses we’ve come across in recent memory—so much so we deemed it a ‘modern marvel’ in our sample gallery and crowned it the ‘Zoom Lens Winner of the Year’ award.

While we’ve shared our thoughts on the image quality and overall performance of the lens, we haven’t taken too deep a look into the construction of the lens. Thankfully, Roger and his team over at Lensrentalss have done a complete teardown of the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens to show off just what Canon has put into this compact lens that’s part of the ‘holy trinity’ in the photo world.

To start off the teardown, Roger recounts a little anecdote wherein a Canon engineer tossed a box on his workbench and pulled out a mock-up version of the RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens. Roger admits he isn’t easily impressed, but when he laid eyes on the mockup, he said his jaw dropped and the only words to leave his mouth were ‘that’s going to sell you a lot of cameras.’ Now, a good while later, a full-functioning version of the lens was sitting on his workbench once again; and this time it wasn’t leaving without going through a little operation.

Before cracking open the lens, Roger first addresses the redesigned optics of the lens, pointing out the dual focus group design and the extending lens barrel, addressing the latter by saying:

Some of you HATE extending barrel lenses. That’s cool; don’t get one. Some of you like to call them dust pumps. That’s cool, too, although it’s incorrect. (We take care of over 20,000 lenses. The most common ‘dusters’ among current lenses all happen to be primes that don’t zoom at all.)

From there, it’s onto the teardown, which starts with the hinged tripod ring. He notes it’s not the most robust tripod ring he’s come across, but when attached to the camera, it’s ‘quite sturdy.’ With the tripod collar off, it was onto the front of the barrel, which came off with a few external screws. Upon looking over the front ring, Roger discovered a foam sealing between the filter barrel and front element, as well as a new breathable filter, that will allow air to pass through the front of the lens without allowing particles to get in.

The front lens element was then removed with ease, which lead to the ‘reasonably large IS unit,’ which stopped the team in their tracks and lead them to turning the lens over and tearing it down from the back.

The rear lens mount proved fairly standard as far as Canon’s RF lenses go. It was packed tight with the PCB and ribbon cables, as well as a few springs to add the tactile feedback to Canon’s programmable ‘Control Ring.’

Eventually, Roger hit a point where the ribbon cables looked too fragile to continue, but he and Aaron persisted and eventually removed the rear lens barrel after carefully threading each ribbon cable through the maze of pieces.

It was at this point Roger paused to ‘salute Canon’s engineers,’ saying:

The flexes are all beautifully laid out and organized, going directly to their appointed place with no wandering about allowed. Notice how all the switches just take up one small flex; there’s not a lot of electron transfer needed to signal ‘on’ or ‘off’ compared to the amount of information that IS or focusing requires.

After composing himself, he and Aaron continued to the inner workings of the lens. Specifically, he draws attention to the elements Canon uses to secure the extending lens barrel. Roger says the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 ‘has about the most robust extending barrel mechanism I’ve ever seen […] There aren’t the usual three cams sliding about to move this barrel, there are three pairs of them, and each is very large and robust.’

Roger and Aaron eventually strip the outer barrel of the lens and dig further into the most intricate components, including both focus assemblies and the image stabilization unit. Roger notes the focus assembly (motors and optics) will likely be replaced as a whole if any component breaks, so any issue on that front will likely prove to be an expensive fix. However, he does not that he ‘doubt it’s a part that will really ever need replacing’ as the lens ‘is SLB (Strong, Like Bull) engineering, and the area is well protected.’

In all, Roger concludes that a ‘LOT’ of engineering progress has been made in the RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens compared to the likes of the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 lens and the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 lens. He states clearly, ‘this lens was a new design from the ground up,’ adding:

There’s no ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’ holdovers [compared to the iterative updates of past 70-200mm lenses]. That’s a lot more work for the designers, but the result is a beautifully engineered, fully modern lens. It’s clean, functional, and straightforward.

Roger further addresses the build quality of the lens, saying:

‘It’s obviously very robustly engineered from a mechanical standpoint. The internal composites are strong as hell. There are double cams, rods, and posts everywhere. There’s no play in any moving parts. We can’t imagine there will ever be play in the moving parts unless you run over it with a truck. You could describe it as ruggedized, but I’m going to stick with Strong, Like Bull, and suggest we refer to this as the RF-SLB 70-200mm f/2.8 from now on.

In the end, Roger summarizes the teardown with six simple (paraphrased) words: ‘This is how you do it.’

Samsung Galaxy A80 teardown reveals complex camera swivel mechanism

The Samsung Galaxy A80 is a Snapdragon 730-powered mid-range phone that would not stand out much from the crowd if it weren’t for its pretty unique camera swivel mechanism. Like the Asus ZenFone 6 and other swivel phones the A80 only has only one camera that can be used as both a main shooter and selfie camera.

Youtuber JerryRigEverything has now put the A80 through a detailed teardown process and discovered that the swivel mechanism is quite a complex piece of engineering that uses a stepper motor with a threaded shaft for raising and lowering the camera module.

At the peak of the extension the rotation of the camera is triggered through a clever gearing system. The camera ‘carriage’ is also running on rails at the side of the phone for smooth movement.

The camera module itself features a 48 MP main camera with 1/2″ sensor, a 12mm-equivalent ultra-wide and a depth-sensing time-of-flight camera for bokeh simulation.

JerryRigEverything concludes that the A80 is one of the most over-engineered phones he has seen but that it’s quite difficult to take apart, and especially to put back together again, with many more screws to remove and reinsert than on more conventional devices.

No matter your opinion on the swivel design, it’s quite amazing to see how much engineering can be squeezed into the tiny body of a smartphone these days.
