Canon reveals its first two 8K broadcast lenses, the UHD-DIGISUPER 51 and 7×10.7 KAS S

Canon has taken the wraps off the new UHD-DIGISUPER 51 (SP51x15.5B) and 7×10.7 KAS S, its first two 8K broadcast lenses. The models are compatible with 8K broadcast cameras that feature 1.25″ sensors, according to Canon, which notes that this equipment has become more popular in documentary production and sports coverage.

The UHD-DIGISUPER 51 8K model is a 51x field zoom lens with what Canon says is the longest focal range in the world at 15.5 – 790mm. An integrated 1.5x extender brings the total telephoto focal length to 1185mm. Canon says this new model offers high-end quality ‘from the center to the periphery of the screen.’

Joining the zoom lens is Canon’s new 7×10.7 KAS S 8K portable 7x zoom lens with a 10.7 – 75mm focal range. As with the UHD-DIGISUPER model, the 7×10.7 KAS S 8K lens features the ‘same operability’ as its 4K and 2/3″ HDTV lens counterparts, according to the company.

The 7×10.7 KAS S model will arrive first; customers will be able to special order it starting in January 2020. The UHD-DIGISUPER 51 will likewise be offered as a special order, but not until May 2020. Pricing information hasn’t been revealed at this time.

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L Lens

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L offers a classic focal length that’s useful for pretty much everything.

You’ll find a 70-200mm in practically every landscape photographer’s bag for those tight shots that require a longer focal length. Portrait photographers like 70-200mm lenses for their headshot capabilities. Sports photographers love the focal length for powerful action shots. And event photographers appreciate the way a fast 70-200mm zoom lets them shoot without getting in the way.

Up until now, Canon hasn’t produced a lens in this focal length range, unless you count the RF 24-240mm, which is nowhere near as fast as the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L, nor does it have the ‘L’ lens designation. Therefore, many of Canon’s serious mirrorless shooters will jump at the chance to add such a powerful lens to their bags.

Note that the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L seems specially designed for low-light shooters: A combination of an ultra-wide f/2.8 aperture and Canon’s image stabilization technology makes this a formidable piece of kit for any low-light shooting scenario.

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L will debut in November 2019 for $ 2699 USD.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS Lens

Canon already offers an RF 85mm f/1.2L lens, so what makes this lens stand apart?

The new RF 85mm lens is designed with a brand new DS coating, known as Defocus Smoothing. The DS coating promises a smoother bokeh effect when shooting at wide apertures by darkening the edges of lens elements. While this serves to create a beautiful background quality, it also decreases light transmittance, so you do lose a bit of the light-gathering capabilities that you generally expect from an f/1.2 lens.

That said, the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS is bound to be appreciated by portrait photographers. With the DS coating, you’ll be able to capture some of the creamiest bokeh you’ve ever seen, while the f/1.2 aperture is perfect for creating a beautiful shallow depth-of-field look.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS will debut in December 2019 for $ 2999 USD.

Epson reveals SureColor P7570, P9570 wide-format printers that offer ‘museum quality’ prints

Epson has expanded its SureCore P-Series line of printers with the new wide-format SureColor P7570 and SureColor P9570 models offering 24in and 44in print sizes, UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink, and PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead tech. Epson’s Reed Hecht calls the P7570 and P9570 its ‘most advanced printers to date.’

Both printer models feature dedicated nozzles for Matte and Photo Black ink, which eliminates ink switching and improves overall printing speeds. According to Epson, the new 6.6cm (2.6in) PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead combined with the new 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink enables these models to print up to 2.4 times faster than the previous models.

Other features include a new print mode called Black Enhanced Overcoat offering improved DMAX for what Epson says is better sharpness and wider contrast ratio on glossy prints, as well as a 4.3in customizable color touchscreen, support for the optional Epson SpectroProofer, a built-in LED light for viewing prints as they’re printing, and a sealed roll media door designed to better protect against dust.

Talking about what users can expect from these two models is Wilhelm Imaging Research director of research Henry Wilhelm, who said:

Preliminary data for the Epson 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment inks in the new SureColor P7570 and P9570 create stunning museum-quality prints with WIR Display Permanence Ratings that will equal or exceed the ratings achieved by the current UltraChrome HDX inks of up to 200 years for color prints and up to 400 years for B&W. Prints framed with UV-absorbing acrylic – and those displayed under LED illumination – will achieve significantly higher ratings.

Epson plans to showcase its new printers from October 3 to 5 at PRINT19 in Chicago. Both models will launch in December at around $ 4,695 USD (P7570) and $ 6,595 (P9570).

CyberLink reveals its new PhotoDirector 11, PowerDirector 18 and other creative software

CyberLink launched PhotoDirector 11, PowerDirector 18, and other updates to its creative software today, adding major new features like performance improvements for the latest R9 and i9 chipsets, AI-powered tools, 1:1 square video support for Instagram and Facebook, new transition effects, and more.

PhotoDirector 11 has been updated with Customizable Warped and Bevel & Emboss text effects in layer editing, the latter of which includes a layer editing tool with access to all of the ‘key’ editing and adjustment features, according to CyberLink. As well, the updated software now features AI Deblur and AI Styles, tools that use the software’s AI engine to remove blurs and add brushstrokes to images.

Joining the product is the updated PowerDirector 18, which has received a number of new features, including support for 1:1 square video and nested projects, new transition effects, motion graphics and animated tile templates, and Shape Designer, a tool for adding and editing vector shapes in videos.

AudioDirector 10 and ColorDirector 8 bring fewer, though no less significant, updates with the addition of AI Dewind for audio clips and Punch & Roll Recording for long audio tracks (AudioDirector), as well as Color Match for standardizing scene color and Color Replacement with Keyframe Control (ColorDirector).

When purchased individually, CyberLink charges the following prices for its four products:

Google Camera app 7.0 leak reveals new Pixel 4 camera features

A leaked version of the Google Camera app 7.0, which will likely be installed on the upcoming Google Pixel 4 device, has made its way into the hands of the people at XDA Developers who have analyzed the code and found a bunch of new camera features to look forward to.

The new camera will likely come with a motion blur mode that lets you capture moving subjects in the foreground and blur the background to emphasize the impression of motion and speed. The feature, which should come in handy at racing or sports events, will likely be called Motion Mode.

A section of code inside the Google Camera 7.0 app that hints at the upcoming Motion Mode.

The app source code also suggests that the computational photography feature Night Sight will be improved on the Google Pixel 4, likely with the previously leaked astrophotography mode. The Night Sight feature will also be sped up by making use of zero shutter lag technology and for astrophotography Google will be using the chipset’s integrated GPU to accelerate segmentation of the sky as well as identifying and brightening stars.

References to Live HDR and HDRNet in the code hint at HDR rendering in the preview image and it also looks like the the Pixel 4 will come with an audio zoom feature, similar to what Apple has implemented on the iPhone 11 and what LG and HTC have been using for some time now. The feature allows the phone to focus its microphones on a major audio source when zooming the camera.

Code from within the Google Camera 7.0 app that references Live HDR settings, as well as mesh warp settings, presumably used in conjunction with depth data.

Other sections in the source code indicate that the Pixel 4 and other compatible Pixel devices will support saving depth data as a Dynamic Depth Format (DDF) file which should allow for re-focusing and other depth modifications in any app that supports the format.

Further improvements could include an updated version of the Photobooth feature which was introduced with the Pixel 3 and automatically takes photos when it detects smiles or funny faces in the frame, integration of an augmented reality measurement app into the Camera app, and a ‘rewind’ feature, the exact function of which is as yet unknown.

Google Pixel have traditionally been at the forefront of mobile imaging and it looks like the Pixel 4 will be no different. We’ll know more in October when the new device is expected to launch.

Fujifilm reveals X-A7 with improved AF, 4K/30p video and $700 price tag

Fujifilm has announced the X-A7, an entry-level mirrorless camera with some key improvements over its X-A5 predecessor. A new 24MP sensor offers 8.5 times more phase detection autofocus points than the previous model, and includes 4K/30p video recording – a welcome upgrade over the X-A5’s 4K/15p. Burst shooting remains at 6 fps.

The X-A7 offers a fully articulated, ultra-high-res 3.5″ touch screen LCD, which is the primary means of interacting with camera controls, as the camera offers only a few physical controls on the back panel. The camera with kit lens attached weighs just 455g (1lb) altogether.

Other new offerings include an update to Fujifilm’s auto scene recognition mode called Bright Mode, which utilizes HDR and other camera settings to create brighter, more vivid images with little user input.

The Fujifilm X-A7 will be available October 24th kitted with a Fujinon XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens for $ 700. Shaking things up a bit, Fujifilm will offer the camera body in dark silver, ‘camel’, mint green and silver color options. A ‘navy’ color will also be available in some regions.

Oppo reveals world’s first smartphone with under-display front camera

Earlier this months both OPPO and Xiaomi teased technology that allows the front camera on a smartphone to be located under the display, avoiding any notches, pinholes or other screen interruptions.

Today OPPO has shown a first device with the feature at MWC Shanghai and provided more information about the under-display technology. In order to make things work both customized displays and camera modules are required.

The display section covering the camera is made of a highly-transparent material and features a redesigned pixel structure that is optimized for the transmittance of light. Still, some light will be absorbed by the display, so the camera comes with a bigger sensor with bigger pixels and a larger aperture than you’d find in conventional front cameras.

There are also customized white balance and HDR algorithms to help boost camera performance and to further reduce the transparent display’s unavoidable detrimental impact on image quality OPPO has developed a haze removal algorithm for sharper and clearer image output.

In its announcement OPPO said it is developing a “futuristic, notchless, unibody and highly-recognizable smartphone,” but has not provided any detailed specs or information on pricing or availability.

Sony World Photography Awards adds new 2020 category, reveals grant recipients

The Sony World Photography Awards has a new ‘Environment’ category under its Professional competition, the World Photography Organization has announced. Under this category, photographers are challenged to ‘address environmental concerns affecting the world today.’ Additionally, the 2020 Awards will also feature a new Youth competition that allows photographers ages 12 to 19 to submit up to three images per months through December 2019.

The 2020 Sony World Photography Awards kicked off its Youth competition this month; its deadlines are the last day of each month from June to December. Under the competition, photographers as young as 12 and as old as 19 can submit up to three single images each month. Every month has its own theme and will result in one winner and a shortlist.

In addition to the new Youth competition, the 2020 Awards will feature a new ‘Environment’ category in the Professional competition, which has a January 11, 2020 deadline. According to the organization, winning and shortlisted photographers will get a ‘global platform’ for showcasing their work.

The 2020 Awards will also include the Open competition with a January 7, 2020, deadline and the Student competition with a November 29 deadline.

In addition to revealing the new Environment category and Youth competition details, the organization has announced the 2019 Sony Grant recipients. In the Professional competition, 2019 Sony Grant recipients get $ 7,000 each alongside Sony photography gear. Recipients of the Student grant receive $ 3,500 each and will work together as a team to provide commissioned images.

June 4, 2019, London: Submissions for the 13th edition of the internationally acclaimed Sony World Photography Awards are now open and free for all to enter at www.worldphoto.org.

The 2020 Awards are marked by the introduction of an Environment category to its Professional competition, recognizing the importance of the subject for contemporary artists, and a new format for the Youth competition, to engage and reward young photographers working worldwide.

The Awards also announced today the recipients of the 2019 Sony Grant. Chosen from the winners and shortlist of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards, the Sony Grant give artists the freedom to create new bodies of work or develop long-term projects. In clear demonstration of this, a new film by 2018 Photographer of the Year Alys Tomlinson funded by her Sony Grant will be premiered at Rencontres d’Arles, France, this summer. The film is an extension of the artist’s 2018 award-winning series Ex-Voto.

Having been seen by 25,000 people in London, the exhibition of winning and shortlisted works from across the 2019 Awards will now tour internationally. Opening in Japan on June 1, the exhibition will travel to Germany, Italy, India, and Mexico giving audiences worldwide the opportunity to see the very best in contemporary photography from the past year.

Environmental issues highlighted in new Professional category

The Professional competition seeks serious bodies of work across ten diverse categories by artists working across fine art photography and photojournalism, and rewards those pushing the boundaries of what photography can do. The new Environment category will challenge artists to address environmental concerns affecting the world today and winning and shortlisted photographers are given a global platform upon which to showcase their work.

Speaking about the direct results of winning, Italian artist Federico Borella states: “Winning the 2019 Photographer of the Year title is one of the most important things for my career and my life. This kind of visibility is amazing because it allows me and my work to reach a global audience. My phone started ringing straight after the announcement and it hasn’t stopped ringing since! People want to listen to the story I want to tell. How can I ask for more?”S

New opportunity for young emerging photographers

The new Youth competition will give young photographers aged 12-19 the opportunity to enter up to three single images per month from June – December 2019. Each month will have a different theme and judges will select one winner and a shortlist per month. The seven monthly winners will then compete to be named Youth Photographer of the Year.

The monthly structure has been implemented to give emerging photographic talent more opportunity to be discovered and will be accompanied by expert advice on the monthly theme to help those entering.

In addition to the Professional and Youth competitions, the 2020 Awards includes the Open competition, rewarding outstanding single images across ten categories and the Student competition, for photography students worldwide. The National Awards program also runs in 60+ countries and celebrate local photographic talent.

The Awards are judged anonymously, giving all photographers across the world equal opportunity to be seen by juries of industry leading experts and win.

A total prize fund of $ 60,000 (USD) plus Sony digital imaging equipment is shared between winning photographers, with many also being flown to London to attend the annual awards ceremony. All shortlisted photographers are given exposure via the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition which opens in London before touring globally. 2019 Sony Grant recipients
The World Photography Organisation and Sony are committed to supporting contemporary photographers and contributing to the further development of photographic culture worldwide.

The Sony Grants program, introduced in 2016, is open to winning and shortlisted photographers of the Awards’ Professional and Student competition. Recipients of the 2019 Professional grant are Yan Wang Preston (UK), Ed Thompson (UK), Kohei Ueno (Japan) and Thomas Uusheimo (Finland). Each receive $ 7,000 (USD) and Sony digital imaging equipment to create work of their choice.

The 2019 Student grant was awarded to Joel Davies (Central St Martins, UK), Sam Delaware (Pacific Union College, USA) and Tobias Kristensen (Danish School of Media & Journalism, Denmark). Each receive $ 3.500 (USD) and have been commissioned to create a new body of images, working as a team.

Yongnuo reveals YN560TX Pro TTL flash and EF-E II Adapter for Sony E-mount

Chinese camera gear manufacturer Yongnuo has announced two new products: the EF-E II Adapter for Sony E-mount cameras and the YN560TX Pro TTL flash. The new adapter is available to purchase from online retailers now for $ 99.99 USD, but the YN560TX Pro flash won’t be available to buy until some time in June.

The Yongnuo EF-E II adapter makes EF and EF-S series lenses compatable with Sony E-mount cameras. This model supports AF and mixed-focus systems, and also offers a function key, USB interface (for firmware updates) and a 1/4-in screw hole for tripods.

Joining the new adapter will be the YN560TX Pro scheduled for release in June. Yongnuo describes the product as ‘a new generation of flash signal transmitters’ that will integrate with the YN622 and YN560TX systems. There will be full support for ‘flash mode, focus control, high-speed synchronization and other functions such as GR/TTL/M/Multi,’ according to the company.

No pricing information for the YN560TX Pro TTL flash is currently available

Documentary reveals how some Instagram influencers game the system

Dutch public broadcaster VPRO has published a documentary called ‘#followme’ that details the hidden reality behind fake Instagram accounts and how they become popular. The documentary, which was filmed in a vertical orientation for a primarily mobile audience, is around 49 minutes long and available to stream for free on Instagram and YouTube.

The film ‘#followme’ details the big business fueling faux Instagram success, including the sale of followers to make an account appear more popular than it is, the staging of photos and videos designed to look spontaneous, and how motivated users game the platform’s algorithm to climb in rank.

Instagram has faced increased criticism over its alleged role in fear of missing out (FOMO) and other negative mental health effects, including from some influencers who have shed light on the often fake nature of many Instagram accounts. The social network may be planning big changes that address some of these concerns, however. Earlier this month, the company confirmed that it has been testing hidden like counts and that it may introduce the change across the platform.
