Fujifilm Camera Remote app version 4.0.0 for Android is now live with new UI and more

Fujifilm promised back in April that the Android version of its Fujifilm Camera Remote app would be available in May. Now, with only a few days to spare, it fulfilled its promise, releasing version 4.0.0 on the Google Play Store.

Like the iOS version, the new Android version features an updated user interface and many other features designed to streamline the remote capture process.

The new interface sheds wasted space and is specifically designed to make use of smartphones with larger displays. Additionally, Fujifilm has simplified the pairing process and added a new ‘Album’ feature, making it easier to sort through images transferred to the device. Other improvements include support for new cameras and numerous bug fixes.

Below is a list of features the Fujifilm Camera Remote app provides, according to the app’s description:

  • Transferring images and movies to a Smartphone
  • Browsing the Camera from a Smartphone
  • Downloading Location Data from a Smartphone
  • Shooting Images by Remote Control(*)
  • Easily transfer pictures from the cameras that offer Bluetooth capability.
  • Synchronizing “date and time” and/or “location information” with the cameras that offers Bluetooth capability
  • Firmware update via a Smartphone to the cameras that offers Bluetooth capability.
  • Bluetooth wireless remote control camera shutter release is now supported for cameras that offers Bluetooth capability.

Fujifilm’s X-T30, GFX 50R, X-T3, XF10, X-H1 and X-E3 cameras support all the above features while the FinePix XP140 supports all but number seven. The X-T100, X-A5 and FinePix XP130 support features one through six and the GFX 50S, X-T20, X100F, X-A10, X-A3, X-T2, X-Pro2, X-E2S, X70, X-T10, X-T1, X30, X100T, X-E2, FinePix XP120, FinePix XP90, FinePix XP80, FinePix S9900W and FinePix S9950W support features one through four. Wrapping up, the X-E2, XQ2, XQ1, X-A2, X-A1, X-M1 and FinePix Z1100EXR support features one through three while the FinePix Z1000EXR only supports the transfer of images and movies.

Fujifilm Camera Remote version 4.0.0 is live in the Google Play Store for free and works with smartphones running Android 5.0 or later. Geotagging functionality only works with devices equipped with LTE connectivity.

Fujifilm Camera Remote app for iOS gets new UI, additional camera support and more

Fujifilm has released version 4.0 of its Fujifilm Camera Remote iOS app and announced the Android version will be available May 2019.

The update, which was originally announced back in February, features a new interface as well as a number of new features that makes it easier to control settings and capture images remotely with wireless-equipped Fujifilm cameras.

Fujifilm has changed the interface of the app to better use the additional screen real estate of newer iOS devices and has changed the icons and buttons throughout the app to create a more streamlined look. The pairing process is now easier with the updated app and Fujifilm has added an ‘Album’ function that makes it easy to browse through photos and videos that have been imported from the camera. Overall stability of the app and wireless connection has been improved with this update and additional camera support has been added as well.

Fujifilm lists the following features in the app’s description:

  1. Transferring images and movies to a Smartphone

  3. Downloading Location Data from a Smartphone
  4. Shooting Images by Remote Control(*)

Sony announces the Remote Commander, a wireless Bluetooth controller for its camera systems

Sony has announced the impending release of a new Wireless Remote Commander that offers wireless control of Sony camera systems using Bluetooth connectivity.

The remote, officially named RMT-P1BT, operates entirely through Bluetooth connectivity and features a fast 0.05 seconds release time, which is more than fast enough for even the most precise of applications.

The Wireless Remote Commander features an external LED for indicating operation status and is also dust and moisture resistant with the ability to operate in extreme temperatures.

As for functionality, the RMT-P1BT offers focus buttons for manual control over focus changes, a customizable C1 button, Start/Stop buttons for movies and control over power-zoom or digital zoom as well. It shouldn’t come as a surprise the RMT-P1BT also includes a dedicated Bulb mode that can be started and stopped with a button press so it doesn’t need to be held down the entire time.

The RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Comander works with Sony’s a6400, A7III, A7RIII and A9 cameras. It will ship this April for $ 80 USD / $ 110 CAD. It will be available through authorized Sony retailers.

Vello LW-500 Extendá Plus wireless controller brings remote control to select pro cameras

Camera gear company Vello has announced its new LW-500 Extendá Plus Wi-Fi Camera Controller for remote camera control. The new controller supports select Canon and Nikon, as well as most Sony cameras, making it possible to wirelessly control them using a Windows, Mac, Android or iOS device from as far away as 60m / 197ft.

The Extendá Plus brings remote access to select cameras, enabling users to browse, select, stream and share content from a smartphone, tablet or Windows PC. As well, the controller provides remote access to camera settings, enabling photographers to adjust white balance, exposure, shutter speed, and more with a real-time preview from a distance.

The LW-500 has a 10MB/s transfer rate, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, intervalometer with bulb mode and support for touch focus and live view. The controller is compatible with the following Canon and Nikon cameras:

Though most Sony Alpha cameras are supported, Vello warns some cameras don’t support all of the controller’s functions. The company provides a list [PDF] with each model’s compatibility.

Report: FAA to test new pilot programs to speed up remote drone identification tech

In 2017, news surfaced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had taken the first steps toward establishing drone identification rules, which would require a drone to remotely identify itself to law enforcement. The remote ID system could help identify drones operated in restricted airspace, such as drones over airports, but multiple reports have indicated there could be a significant delay.

In November, the Wall Street Journal reported the FAA was ‘significantly behind’ schedule on establishing drone identification rules, something necessary for the large scale commercial use of drones. As well, law enforcement and government officials have increasingly expressed concerns over illegal drone operation and their inability to rapidly identify these UAVs.

In its most recent update, the WSJ has revealed a Federal Register notice from December that details pilot projects aimed at speeding up remote ID system testing. According to the report, the FAA wants to create up to eight prototype projects financed by private companies in order to test different identification options.

These prototype projects would be used both to gather real-world data and verify that the remote identification technologies work while speeding up the overall time it will take the FAA to establish the new rules. Neither timelines nor project costs have been revealed at this time, but assuming that a rule proposal in made in the next few months, final regulations may be established in the next year or two.

Leica announces SF 60 Flash Unit and SF C1 Remote Control Unit for M and SL cameras

Leica has announced a new flash and remote control flash unit for its Q, SL/CL and M-series digital cameras. The Leica SF 60 flash offers TTL metering, and high-speed sync up to 1/8000sec. The SF 60 has a guide number of 60 at ISO 100, and also features tilt and zoom, with a built-in diffuser and reflector card.

The Leica SF C1 remote control unit enables wireless control of SF 60 flash units across up to seven channels, in three groups. The SF C1 incorporates a Micro SD card slot for future firmware updates.

The SF 60 flash and SF C1 controller will be available later this month, for $ 595 and $ 350 respectively.

Ricoh releases SDK for Pentax cameras, opening the door to 3rd party remote control apps

Ricoh has released a software development kit (SDK) for Pentax cameras that allows third-party developers to create mobile and desktop apps that can control the camera remotely via USB cable or Wi-Fi.

The wireless package is available for Android and iOS. The USB-version can be downloaded for Microsoft .NET Framework and for C++ (Linux, Windows or MacOS). Both variants offer functions for controlling Pentax’s DSLRs and medium format cameras remotely, including photo and video capture, live view and adjustment of camera settings.

The SDK should allow for straightforward development of sophisticated remote control apps and other, more specialized, camera software, without any need for reverse engineering.

8 Benefits of Using a Wireless Remote for Your Photography

Shooting with a wireless remote adds a lot of extra flexibility and scope to your options. Touching your camera is sometimes not practical or possible. Something as simple as pressing the shutter button with your hand can cause vibration and shake which compromises the image quality.

Being able to engage your camera to shoot while physically distant from it has a lot of benefits. There are cabled options which may be more cost-effective, but you are still limited by the range of the cable, and there are safety concerns. No one wants to trip over a cable and pull your tripod and camera over to smash on the ground!

Wireless remotes are a more expensive option but it offers up much more freedom with your shooting choices.

1. Macro photography

When working with a very small depth of field as in macro photography, sometimes measured in millimeters or less, you have to get your focus point exactly right to get the image sharp. The absolute slightest vibration can interfere with the focus accuracy.

When I shoot I make sure I am sitting some distance away from my tripod and I am very stable and grounded. Sometimes I even hold my breath.

Sharper images

Two changes that I made to my macro shooting workflow made a massive difference in improving the number of sharp shots I was able to obtain. First was getting a wireless remote. The second was shooting in Live View mode, with the view zoomed in.

This allowed me to focus very accurately, sometimes on auto, and sometimes with manual focus. Then by using the remote, it takes vibration out of the shot in two ways – not touching the camera shutter means no movement is introduced. Second, when shooting in Live View, when the lens initially engages, it moves the tiniest amount. By half pressing the remote button, it engages the lens and everything moves a tiny bit and then holds there until the remote button is fully depressed and the shot is taken.

This method has reduced the number of shots taken to capture a sharp image to around 3-5 with around a 50% sharpness rate. Previously over 20 images could be taken and none in focus.

My Canon 100mm F2.8 IS L Macro lens gets used for macro, food, flower and still life photography this way. It allows me to shoot much quicker as fewer shots are taken, and I have a much better feel for how good the shots are when using Live View. It’s a real time saver.

2. Self-Portraits

My work in fine art self-portraiture got a whole lot easier once the ability to shoot at a distance from the camera appeared in my hand, literally, in the form of a wireless remote. It still allows you to shoot using a time delay. So you can click the remote to start the timer, and then drop the remote out of the frame but within easy reach to experiment with different poses and angles.

This is also potentially useful for any portrait shots of pets or children, where it might be necessary to use your hands to attract their attention and direct their eyes toward the camera.  It also allows you to walk away from the camera to fix hair, adjust the fall of a dress or veil for a wedding, and other portrait style shots and still capture candids.

My first ever experiment shooting with myself as the model – this was extremely difficult to do before I had the remote.

3. Long Exposures

My Canon 7d Mark II has a built-in Bulb mode that shoots over 2 hours, so for me, a remote is not needed for long exposure photography.  However many cameras only shoot up to 30 seconds on Bulb mode, and so require you to either hold the shutter down manually or use a remote (cabled or wireless).

Minimizing camera shake is ideal, so not touching the camera is preferred. A remote allows you to hold the shutter open manually for as long as needed. Or as long as you are prepared to hold onto the button (some remotes will time the shot for you, or have a locking button so you don’t have to hold it).

A long exposure that was taken under the light of the full moon. Mote the shadow of the photographer in the bottom left-hand corner – it was so dark I didn’t see it on the shots on the camera. Next time I will know to walk out of frame.

4. Wildlife

Perhaps you are setup in a hide or near a preferred perch, with the camera all prefocused, ready to get the shot, but the critters are staying away. By having the option to move away from the camera and minimise human presence near the scene, it may help you to get the shot you want. Perhaps it might not be safe for you to be in the position, so you could shoot from the safety of a vehicle instead.

5. Using an intervalometer

An intervalometer is a special kind of remote with extra functionality built-in which allows more advanced photography options including shooting time-lapse, light trails, astrophotography, and lightning. Wired and wireless options exist and they do the basic features described in this article as well as offer more control over other options.

Time-lapse requires a sequence of shots taken over a period of time. The intervalometer allows specific control of the interval between shots, and the time period over which the shots are taken.

Light trails and astrophotography are often taken using similar techniques with a longer exposure to allow for vehicle or star movement. Because they are usually done at night, with minimal light, the shutter needs to be open for a lot longer, hence the need for an intervalometer. Plus you can sit in the warmth of your car or the tent for several hours while the camera does its thing.

Having more control over how long the shutter is open and when it is open is a key factor for successful lightning photography if you are not using a lightning trigger and shooting manually.

6. High-speed photography

For those seriously into high-speed photography, they will probably invest in a triggering device, that will operate by sound or breaking a laser beam. For those of us wanting to experiment at home, using a remote and timing it with the event is a more affordable option initially.

You may have to repeat the thing – like bursting a balloon or water droplets – many hundreds or thousands of times to get the perfect shot, and timing is the key. If you are working alone, then a wireless remote is a key tool to enable you to pull off this kind of experiment and get the shot you are after.

I haven’t yet played with high-speed work so instead, have some nice Christmas lights.

7. Landscape photography

Minimizing camera vibration is a key to getting sharp shots. My camera has a custom function to lock up the mirror and hold for two seconds before taking the shot. This allows me to press the shutter button, let go and walk away and the camera does its thing. Another option is to not touch the camera at all, and use a remote, although you may also like to have a mirror lockup and pause in your process as well.

It’s also useful for getting your shadow out of the bottom of the frame, something that occasionally gets picked up when shooting with an ultra wide-angle lens like the 10-22mm.

8. Physical issues

It may be physically difficult for to you get into a particular pose that is necessary to get your eye up to the camera for a long time. Lying on cold wet ground may be unpleasant or even dangerous in winter environments.

Your safety may be at risk for a variety of reasons, so being able to be away from the camera but still shoot, is a key benefit to wireless remotes in these situations.

  • Shoot at the exact moment required.
  • Enables you to shoot some distance from the camera.
  • Reduces vibration.
  • Safety.
  • Allows for creative experimentation.
  • Frees up your hands for other purposes.

  • They’re expensive.
  • Fiddly bits that require lots of batteries to function.
  • Remote is easily lost.

Summary

Since getting a wireless remote it has completely changed the way I shoot and vastly improved the quality of my work while allowing many fewer shots to be taken. The freedom to shoot while away from the camera has allowed for a lot of very creative self-expression in the fine art space. Having my hands free while doing food photography makes it much quicker to tweak compositions by small amounts.

The next phase on my journey to shoot wireless will be going to a device like a Cam Ranger, which not only would allow me to shoot via my phone or iPad but to see what the camera is seeing. That’s especially useful for my self-portrait work and easier to view on a much bigger screen for eyes that don’t focus as well as they used to.

However such a device is quite expensive, and a wireless remote is a much more affordable option and allows you a lot of flexibility to try many new things.

So a wireless remote might be for you if you are frustrated with not getting sharp macro shots, or want better control over how you shoot, improve your keeper rate, or just try something new that you couldn’t do before. Maybe you just want to be warm when shooting in wet/cold weather? Get yourself a wireless remote and enjoy experimenting with some different shooting styles.

Meike’s new battery grip for the Sony a9 and a7R lll comes with a wireless remote

Accessories manufacturer Meike has released details of a new grip it will be selling for the Sony a9 and a7R lll bodies that can hold two batteries and double as a remote control.

The Meike MK-A9 Pro Battery Grip is designed to make vertical shooting more comfortable, and comes fitted with a shutter release, two custom buttons, an AF button, a joystick and two control wheels as well as its own on/off button. In addition though, the grip functions as a wireless radio remote receiver when it’s used with the remote controller that comes with the kit.

Operating on 2.4GHz radio signals, the grip can be instructed from a distance of up to 100m, and offers functions beyond simple triggering. The unit can also work as a timer, an intervalometer, and as a Bulb trigger for extended exposures.

Review: Interfit Honey Badger Studio Strobe and Universal Remote

Right now is a great time to be a studio photographer. Never before has there been such a multitude of options available to you in terms of photographic lighting. It seems that the recent surge in new photographers has lit a fire in the industries that create photographic gear. Lighting is a sector that has seen a huge influx of new options and new innovations.

Interfit has been one of those companies that constantly add to the mix for a while now. Not only do they make affordable studio strobes and continuous lights, they also make a ton of lighting modifiers and an indescribable amount of other studio accessories. If you need something for your studio, chances are that Interfit makes it.

Stylish design is usually absent from studio lighting, but the Interfit Honey Badger aims to remedy that.

The newest light in Interfit’s range is the Honey Badger. A small, mid-powered studio strobe that fits into the low-middle pricing range. the light itself is in a stylish, bright yellow casing which adds a bit of a flourish to the monolight (the sort of product which is usually lacking in any sort of aesthetic design). I had chance to spend some time with and review the Honey Badger as well as the Interfit Universal Remote. Here are my thoughts.

What Exactly is a Honey Badger?

If you’re not familiar with the light’s namesake, a honey badger is a medium-sized mammal found in Africa and Asia. At first glance, they’re adorable. However, honey badgers are infamous for being unstoppable murder machines that maim, mutilate and maul everything in their path. You’ll often find them near the top of lists of the world’s most dangerous animals.

Knowing that you can probably figure out what Interfit are going for with their branding. You have a small, stylish light that’s cute to look at, but packs a punch when set loose in the studio.

So did they achieve that? The short answer is – yes, quite well.

The Strobe

As per the Interfit website, the specifications for the Honey Badger are as follows:

The biggest takeaways here are the seven stops of power range up to 320ws (which is pretty decent for a strobe in this price range), the S-mount, and the built-in receiver.

No HSS or TTL

Before I get into anything else, let’s address the elephant in the room. Announcements of new studio strobes these days always seem to include the wonderful features of High-Speed Sync (HSS) and Through the Lens metering (TTL), both relatively new features in the world of studio strobes as they have been previously limited to flashguns (speedlights). The Honey Badger does not have these features. Then again, its price point reflects their absence.

Price

The Honey Badger sells in the US for $ 299.99 and the UK for £259.99, putting it squarely in the low-middle range of the market. For this price range, it packs a decent punch and pulls its weight easily.

The Interfit Universal Remote is sold separately at a more than reasonable $ 79.99 USD and £39.99 UK.

Built-in Receiver

What the Honey Badger does include, which surprised me a little, is a built-in receiver. This means that you can fire the strobe with a transmitter on your camera without having to worry about extra receivers, errant sync cables, and dead batteries. Interfit sells a Universal Manual Remote (covered by this review) that works with the Honey Badger and a selection of other Interfit lights.

Power

While 320ws is a long way from the power output you can get from some strobes, it is more than enough in most everyday situations. As long as you bring your lights in close to your subject like I do, you should have no problem obtaining apertures of f/8 and f/11 for portraits and f/16 and beyond for tabletop set-ups.

If you’re working out of a home studio or another small space, the power output of the Honey Badger is likely going to be enough for you.

Size

As far as strobes go, the Honey Badger is quite small and highly portable.

The size of the Honey Badger was far more noticeable than the color when I first took it out of the box. This light is small. For comparison, above is a photo of it next to a Bowens light with similar specifications and a Canon 580 EX II Speedlite.

I can speculate on both the advantages and the disadvantages of the size of the Honey Badger.

I have no way of testing it, but I imagine that fitting three or four of these lights into a carry-on sized Pelican case would be pretty easy. If you’re a traveling photographer, being able to easily transport that many studio strobes might be a huge bonus.

When I attached one of my own modifiers, a large Interfit Strip-box, the small size of the strobe and the narrowness of the strip-box allowed me to point the light straight down. This isn’t usually possible without a boom arm and it got me pretty excited about the possibilities. (That said, one of the kits that Interfit offer with the Honey Badger includes a stand with a boom arm.)

The shape of the Honey Badger may allow you more configurations with some modifiers.

On the other hand, we live in a world where appearances matter. Between the size and the color, the Honey Badger does look a little bit like a toy. Throughout the rest of this review, I will try to assure you that the Honey Badger does perform well, but if you have clients that like to see big productions with big lights everywhere, they may be less than impressed.

The Softbox

The Honey Badger kit I tested included a 24” popup softbox. It’s a small softbox; I can’t say much more than that about it. In fact, it’s identical to a Neewer branded one that I bought a few months ago for use with my speedlights. The only difference is the Interfit branding. It is of good quality, fits snugly on the Honey Badger and has no apparent effect on the color temperature of the light that passes through it.

If your intent is to shoot portraits, especially in a fixed studio environment, you’re going to want a bigger light modifier. The softbox is useful and you will be able to get results from it, but you will want to find something much larger.

If you purchase this kit, be forewarned. The softbox comes in a pouch much smaller than its actual size. When it comes out of that bag, it opens itself with quite a lot of force. Don’t do what I did and please, please hold it away from your face.

S-Mount

With a Bowens S-mount, the Honey Badger gives you access to a vast range of modifiers.

The fact that the Honey Badger has a Bowens S-Mount on it is a major advantage in my opinion. There is a vast range of modifiers available that fit the S-mount, ranging from cheap imports to high quality, but far more pricey, proprietary modifiers from brands like Interfit and Bowens. I may be a bit biased as I am a Bowens user, but if I were to invest in the Honey Badger system, that S-mount would make my life so much easier.

As an aside, Bowens has gone out of business. That doesn’t mean you should forsake the S-mount. As mentioned, there are hundreds of products and dozens of other lighting systems that use the S-mount. Bowens might be going, but modifiers that fit the S-mount are going to be around for a long while yet.

White Balance

The Honey Badger has a color temperature of 5600k. This means it’s a touch warmer than the flash White Balance setting in Lightroom. If you like warmer tones in your images, this is not a problem. However, if you would prefer a more neutral look, remember that you will need to dial your White Balance back a hundred degrees. Bear in mind, if you’re using cheaper modifiers, they tend to have a significant effect on your color temperature which renders this point moot anyway.

Diffusion Dome

The frosted diffusion dome covering the flashbulb gives an extra layer of diffusion behind your modifier.

Unlike most strobes, the Honey Badger has a frosted dome over the flashbulb. This adds a tiny amount of diffusion to the bare bulb. In most cases, you’re never going to want to shoot with a bare strobe, but I tried it anyway. The light is as hard as you would expect, but it is possible to use it to creative effect.

Modeling light

When I first turned the Honey Badger on, I didn’t expect an LED modeling light. This is a plus as it means that your subjects aren’t going to boil under hot lights. In fact, I used the Honey Badger nearly constantly in four studio sessions and it never even got warm, never mind overheating.

The Interfit Universal Remote

The Interfit Universal Remote allows you to control the Honey Badger (and other Interfit strobes) from the top of your camera.

I will admit that using the Universal Remote to control the Honey Badger from the top of the camera is an absolute pleasure. I tend to work in confined spaces anyway, but not having to actually walk to the light to change the power output was fantastic. The remote is easy to use as well, and all the functions are labelled clearly. When I’m next in the market for new strobes, this remote may very well play into my considerations. I imagine a scenario where I don’t have to dodge behind a subject to the back of a studio to change the power output on a pair of rim lights. I can dream right?!

That said, the remote was the only problem I had while testing the Honey Badger. For the first 20 minutes or so, I couldn’t figure out why the modeling light was turning itself off. I was convinced there was a problem with the light itself, but it turns out that for whatever reason, on the unit I tested, the modeling light shuts off any time you change the power output via the Universal Remote. I don’t know why this would be and I am unaware if it was a problem isolated to the unit I used, but it did not do the same when you change the power output on the actual strobe.

With a price tag of $ 79.99 USD (£39.99), if you are interested in the Honey Badger, or other Interfit lights, this remote is a no brainer.

The Test

For the first test, I set up the Honey Badger straight out of the box with everything included (24” softbox and the Universal Remote). I had the whole thing set up in no time and once the batteries went into the remote, all the channel settings were sorted out in seconds. (It really is that easy.)

To start with, I placed the light at 45 degrees in a basic Rembrandt setup. Because the softbox is so small, I brought it in really close to the subject (about a foot away).

From here, I moved the soft box away a short and distance and further to the subject’s left. I wanted to take advantage of the harder light from the smaller softbox and try to create some images with deep, defined shadows.

Strip-Box

I happen to own a large Interfit strip softbox (which I adore), so that was the next modifier to go on the Honey Badger. At first, I was overcome with glee as I realized I could point it straight down thanks to the Honey Badger’s small size; however, I chose not to keep it that way as it’s not the most flattering light for human subjects.

Instead, I put it straight in front of my subject, slightly above and pointed straight at her nose for a basic butterfly lighting set-up.

Bare-bulb

As mentioned, I felt inclined to see what the light from Honey Badger looked like as a bare bulb. The diffusion dome got the better of my curiosity. In my opinion, it’s perfectly usable. You won’t want to use it a lot, however, but the hard light might suit some high fashion portraits quite well.

7’ Parabolic Umbrella with Diffusion

This is where I started to see some possible limitations with the Honey Badger. I wanted to see if the Honey Badger could cope with a giant parabolic umbrella. The answer is yes, but not without extra pieces of equipment. The light itself does have a hole for an umbrella, but I wasn’t willing to see if it would hold that much weight. Instead, I placed a Bowens umbrella reflector on it and attached the modifier.

Because the light is so small, I had to bring the umbrella really close to the light before it would support the umbrella’s weight. With the light so close to the umbrella, it was not able to use the full surface area of the modifier. The 7’ umbrella effectively became a 4.5’ umbrella. This is not the end of the world, but it was annoying. There are plenty of options for umbrella holders and mounts on the market that would solve this problem, I just don’t happen to own any of them.

Beauty Dish with Grid & Diffusion Sock

The final variation I tried was using a 24″ beauty dish with both a grid and a diffusion sock. For this setup, the light was placed about 10 feet in front of the subject for a harder light and to reduce the speed of the light fall off so that more light hit the background.

Pros and Cons

Having used it for a while, I can tell you that the Honey Badger has more pros than it does cons (and a few of the cons are hyperbolic).

Pros of the Honey Badger

  • Reasonably priced
  • Small
  • Reasonably powered
  • Bright LED modeling light
  • Bowens S-mount
  • Fast recycling times (I never had to wait for it)
  • Built-in receiver
  • The Universal Remote works like a charm
  • Doesn’t overheat easily
  • Good build quality
  • Stylish in appearance

Cons

  • The light might be too small in some situations
  • 24” softbox is too small for many studio situations, albeit perfectly functional
  • Modeling light turns itself off (on the unit I tested) when the power is adjusted via the Universal Remote
  • No HSS or TTL
  • May have issues supporting the weight of large modifiers like an 8’ Octabox

Overall

In the end, I enjoyed using the Honey Badger. It is a good quality, competent light that would suit any photographer working a studio environment, especially for those setting up a home studio. The Universal Remote really adds to the experience as well, making power adjustments from the top of the camera a breeze.

If you’re looking for HSS or TTL functionality, or a light with a self-contained battery, no, the Honey Badger is not for you. For anything else, the Honey Badger is absolutely worth your consideration.
