GoPro Hero6 arrives today with 4K/60p recording, improved image quality, better stabilization

A more powerful processor is at the center of GoPro’s Hero6 Black announcement today, enabling features like 4K/60p video recording and improved dynamic range compared to its previous Hero action cams. The custom-designed GP1 processor also enables 1080/240p slow motion video, and claims that improved image stabilization and better low light performance come with the package.

Like the Hero5, the Hero6 is waterproof without a case to a depth of 10m/33ft. It also supports GoPro’s QuikStories, a mobile app feature that analyzes footage and automatically assembles short clips of what it identifies as the highlights of your adventure. GoPro says that the new GP1 chip offers advanced machine vision and computer learning capabilities to analyze scenes and create better automated stories.

Other improvements include 3x faster offloading speeds and a new digital zoom feature. The Hero6 comes of course with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope sensors to track all of the action.

The GoPro Hero6 Black is on sale today for $ 500.

Sony a9 firmware update 1.10 ‘improves image quality and overall stability’

Sony has released firmware version 1.10 for the Sony a9, bringing improved image quality to the camera alongside a bug fix that addresses a problem with Raw images disappearing when SDXC and microSDXC cards were transferred from the camera to ‘certain smartphones.’ The update also adds the Eye AF function for some A-mount lenses when they’re used with the LA-EA3 mount adapter.

Firmware Version 1.10 for the Sony a9 is available to download from Sony’s website.

Phase One unveils IQ3 100MP Trichromatic digital back, promises unmatched color quality

Phase One unveiled its newest IQ3 model today. A 100MP digital back designed in partnership with Sony, it’s called the Trichromatic because of its focus on exceptional color reproduction that supposedly matches the capacity of the human eye. In many ways the photographic foil of the Achromatic digital back, the Trichromatic is the “brain child” of Phase One’s long standing collaboration with Sony.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Phase One promises the Trichromatic will bring “unsurpassed color quality to the hands of the finest photographers across the globe.” No big deal… just unsurpassed color quality.

The Trichromatic achieves these color feats thanks to new Bayer color filter technology that has been implemented on the ultra-high res 100MP CMOS sensor. This technology is allegedly “exclusive” to Phase One, and “transforms digital color capabilities to render color more authentically than ever.”

Phase One also claims that the Trichromatic’s sensor design offers the “absolute lowest digital noise” of any medium format CMOS camera on the market thanks to a new base ISO level of just ISO 35.

DxOMark image quality test report released for Huawei Mate 9

The Mate 9 is Huawei latest flagship smartphone and comes with a Leica-powered dual-camera that combines a 20MP monochrome sensor with a 12MP RGB chip. Image data from both sensors is combined for optimized image quality.

The test engineers at DxOMark have now put the new technology through its paces and with a score of 85 the Mate 9 performs respectably but cannot take one of the top spots. It slots in at a joint 12th position, just behind the LG G5 and iPhone 7. It shares this spot with the LG V20, which was also recently added to DxO’s mobile rankings.

In still image mode the testers liked the good detail preservation, accurate white balance and good exposure of the device but deducted points for inconsistent color in cloudy conditions, color casts with flash use and some ghosting artifacts. Video footage also showed good detail and exposure and was well-stabilized. On the downside, there is a noticeable jello effect when recording while walking and visible noise and reduced detail in low light. You can read the full report on DxOMark.com.

Sample Reel: Check out the Panasonic FZ2500’s 4K video quality

The Panasonic FZ2500 made its Photokina 2016 debut sporting a 20MP 1″-type BSI-CMOS sensor and a 24-480mm equiv. F2.8-4.5 lens. And while it offers some pretty cool stills features, the FZ2500 is really a video-centered camera.

It is capable of 4K capture at both 24 and 30p as well as Full HD capture at up to 60p. The camera sports a fully-articulating touchscreen, mic and headphone ports as well as in-body image stabilization. The above video should give you an idea of the 4K and HD video quality, on-board microphone quality, image stabilization and zoom range. Note: when shooting 4K the widest focal length available is 36mm.

The only adjustments applied in post were to conform the higher frame rate clips to 30p, and to upscale as necessary to fill the frame.

Google Earth and Maps updated with higher quality satellite imagery

Google has updated both Google Earth and Google Maps with higher-quality satellite imagery using images mostly taken by NASA and the USGS’s Landsat 8. According to the company, the refreshed imagery provides truer colors and greater detail in comparison to the previous content captured by Landsat 7, helping provide what Google calls its ‘freshest global mosaic to date.’

The company pored over more than 700 trillion pixels’ worth of Landsat images to choose the clearest photos. Before this imagery refresh, Google’s mapping products included satellite imagery captured, in same cases, nearly two decades ago. Google has rolled out the new images to all of its mapping products; the content can be viewed on both the ‘satellite’ layer on Google Maps and on Google Earth.

Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 impresses with image quality, versatility

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 is a mid-range interchangeable lens camera sporting a 16MP Four Thirds sensor and 4K video capability. In markets outside of North America the GX85 is sold as the GX80; in Japan it is sold as the GX7 Mark II.

Sliding in directly below the flagship GX8, the GX85 is targeted toward enthusiast photographers and videographers. It doesn’t use the new 20MP Four Thirds chip we saw in the GX8, instead it sticks with the familiar 16MP sensor used on many other Micro Four Thirds cameras. It also does not have the tilting EVF, weather-sealing or microphone input offered by the GX8. 

Still, the GX85 shares many of its big brother’s features like 4K photo mode, Post Focus, Depth from Defocus AF, and Dual I.S.. It also has a redesigned shutter mechanism. Shutter-induced blur (‘shutter shock’) was an issue we encountered on the GX8, which used a motor and spring arrangement in its shutter mechanisms. The new electromagnetic shutter found in the GX85 resolves this problem.

The GX85 also has no anti-aliasing filter, a first for Panasonic cameras. This should lead to better detail retention at the pixel level, but can also lead to moiré. However, Panasonic claims that the new Venus Engine image processor is specially tuned to combat moiré and false color and in use, we’ve found that it does so pretty well.

Like the GX8, the GX85 offers Dual I.S., combining sensor-based image stabilization with lens-based IS. But unlike the GX8, which has 4-axis sensor IS, the GX85 offers 5-axis sensor IS with rotation correction. Another advantage over its big bro: the GX85 can also use Dual IS during 4K video capture, something that the GX8 cannot.

It’s arguable whether the GX85 should be called the little brother of the GX8 or the true replacement to the GX7. And the different regional naming conventions for the GX85 only add to the confusion. The chart above seems to give support to both ways of looking at it: the GX85 uses the same field sequential EVF as the GX7 (although it doesn’t tilt), and what is presumably the same sensor (sans AA filter). And like the GX7, it lacks weather sealing and microphone/headphone ports but has a pop-up flash.

However, aside from its sensor and EVF, the GX85 also shares a lot of core components and specs with the GX8, such as its 49-point AF system, 4K video capture and 6 fps burst with AF. So whichever way you view the GX85, it certainly stacks up nicely to its Panasonic peers, as well as to the competition.

OOWA smartphone lenses use ‘free-form’ tech for improved image quality

DynaOptics, an optical engineering company that has previously looked at bringing zoom lenses to smartphones, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its OOWA smartphone add-on lenses. 

The lenses, a 2.5x tele-lens with an equivalent focal length of 75mm and a 15mm equivalent super-wide-angle, use DynaOptics’ patented free-form system design methodology which promises improved edge-to-edge sharpness, minimal distortion, no chromatic aberrations and no vignetting, compared to conventional optical designs. This is achieved through a rotationally asymmetric design that optimizes image quality in a rectangular shape (i.e, the shape of an imaging sensor). In contrast, conventional rotationally symmetric lenses optimize image quality in a circle.

Both lenses attach to iPhone 6-series models via an included protective case. The tele-lens has 5 elements, one made from glass and 4 made out of plastic. The wide-angle has three plastic elements and one glass element.
